The smell of dust still hung heavily trough the buildings of Home as the synthetic light that kept it day dimmed completely for the night. Revealing all the glowing lanterns that the 5 families of the Ruins placed up soon after the shadow beast fell. In this warm light Toriel heard the sound of instruments playing in the alcoves under the dilapidated buildings. This and the sight of monsters flitting in and out of hastily-made festival stands warmed her heart as she waited in the Puzzle Plaza overlook. However even with the jolly atmosphere she couldn't help but to feel an underlining tension in her soul. After seeing the metal-clad shadow of her past, holes in Toriel's memories started to fill in. Holes she wasn't even aware she had. Experiences she never knew she had. She tended to this anxiety by playing with the glowing violet orb in her hands, and making small talk with the "human" that appeared in the color's place after the battle.
Toriel could only use the term human in the same sense as when she used to shape-shift herself into a human. She could pass for one too, if it wasn't for her horns and tail. The difference being, while Toriel could hide the fact she was actually a Puca, the girl really couldn't hide the fact she was actually a shape-shifted Tanuki. As the large striped tail of fluff coming out of a rip in the back of the girl's kimono could attest.
"Soulhunter," spoke the devil quietly. Watching for any sudden movement, not really sure what to expect at this point.
"Anyu, I told you before," Toriel said lightly. Pocketing the orb before establishing eye contact. "Just call me Riele, or Toriel if you prefer. There's no need for that title."
Especially since I haven't answered to it since the Hunt ended. She wanted to add but held her tongue. Things were already confusing enough.
"Er- right, sorry," The girl's pointed ears dropped a little. She then took a breath and continued. "Riele, why did you untie me from the tree? Aren't you worried about what I may do now?"
"Well, when you get as old as I am you tend to make better judgment calls," Toriel answered with a smile. The fact that she was able to see the white spade in Anyu's chest with a quick Check was delicately unsaid. "Though I'm surprised you are willing to give me a warning. Is there a reason for that?"
Anyu grabbed a little bit of her hair and started playing with it. "W-well it's just that- with what happened to me today notwithstanding, I feel really- calm, peaceful even. Like the eyes that haunted me all my life have finally closed. A-and I'm really afraid they might return suddenly and- I won't be able to sleep again."
"Ah, I see," Toriel nodded thoughtfully. She then allowed the conversation to fall into an uncomfortable silence, hoping that Anyu noticed the opening.
A few moments passed before the Tanuki began to fidget again. "Oh- I made you curious didn't I?"
"I wouldn't ask you anything personal if we met under different circumstances," Toriel answered with a shake of her head. "But I need to make sure no one else gets hurt, I hope you understand."
"Yes, yes, you- deserve that much," Anyu nodded solemnly. "The eyes are a reference to a poem."
"Really," Toriel replied. She then gave Anyu the floor.
To which she complied:
We don't remember much from before our death, our first death.
Brief glimpses, mannerisms we had, the families we had.
And most importantly the friends we had.
2 dear friends. Someone we began to love.
And her.
"I don't remember her name." none of us do.
"I don't remember her face." none of us do.
What do you remember?
"Her eyes."
We do too.
And with them comes the fear, the anger, the feeling of rot.
Every night she'll come to you. Give you back your anguish, and leave laughing into the night.
To alleviate, grow strong, and turn to the Portals.
Doors to the Waking World.
Then, in hopes for respite, or for revenge.
Find her, or her Progenitors.
And shut their eyes for good.
One way or another.
"Now that I think of it, it seems more like a call to action than a poem," Anyu clarified.
"I see," Toriel replied thoughtfully. Scratching her chin with a finger. To her it sounded more like a Tale than even a call for action. It was then that she noticed Anyu's terminology.
Waking World.
Toriel subconsciously placed a hand to her neck and tightened her jaw. She closed her eyes and allowed the phantom pain to pass, it only took a few moments. She then took a deep breath and pushed the issue. "And I guess this "Waking World" is here?"
The violet raccoon girl nodded. "The portals only go one way. So I guess this is it."
The new-monster's nonchalant response rubbed Toriel the wrong way. "You sound experienced," She pointed out. "This isn't your first time?"
"Fourth. I'm not as young as I look." Anyu winked with a smug smile.
This caused the goatwoman to raise an eyebrow. "If this is your fourth time and the portals go one way. How do you go back?"
Anyu answered aloofly. "I show up here. I get killed. I wake up back in Haizara, then I train while I wait for the next transit."
"Is this the same case for your siblings?" Toriel asked, trying and failing to hide her shock.
Anyu began to answer but the conversation ended abruptly by a sharp crack. The two turned suddenly to the original opening to the overlook and watched Ed, Vi, and Claire file in.
"I'm back Goatmom!" Ed yelled with a beaming grin and his arms up. Causing his new black coat to bellow outward exposing a new pure white shirt with a red Deltarune broke up in horizontal parallel stripes printed on the front and dark gray shorts. Though to Toriel the new getup was more familiar than the clothes he had a week ago. Slowing to a skid, the man turned to his escorts. "Thanks for the help guys."
"(Anytime big man,)" Vi replied in reverence. The frog then started back the way he came.
Ed then notice Claire start to fidget, he was about to ask why when the moth suddenly came up to him and with light force placed her lips against his. Ed hopped in place, his eyes wide in surprise. The moth then realized her own boldness and pulled back in panic. "I- I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I d-don't know why I did that- I-"
"(Claire quit playing around,)" Vi chided not even looking at them.
Claire's whole form turned red in embarrassment. "I- IgottogothankyouEd!"
Ed just responded with a wave at the fleeing moth's wings. His own cheeks flushed.
"How adorable," Toriel commented with a mischievous chuckle. The distraction was enough to calm her down. Anyu just turned her back to the PDA. Desperately hoping nobody noticed that she was blushing as well.
Ed wiped his forehead with his sleeve then turned his attention to the other women in the room. "Sorry about the dust-up wall Goatmom. Were you stuck here long?"
Toriel shook her head. "It didn't take much time to leave."
"Huh?" Ed asked. "How did you get out? Only the one who made it can remove it."
At this Anyu turned to face the human. Or rather the enormous hole bore out of the wall to the right of the original exit behind him. It was 3x larger than Toriel and easily outlined by continuously burning white embers.
"I made my own exit," Toriel patiently answered.
"Where?" Ed asked looking around him.
Anyu was the one to speak up to this. "Wh-what do you mean "where?" Do you not see the giant hole behind you?"
To this Ed turned behind him and gazed at the tunnel, after a few moments he turned back. "Yup, that would do it all right."
"Ed-" Toriel was afraid to ask. "What- did you think that hole was?"
"Festival decorations," Ed said simply with a smile.
Yeah he's not a progenitor, the elders told us they were smarter than that. Anyu thought, hanging her head.
Toriel began walking towards the human and pulled him into a hug. "It's good to see you're ok," she spoke warmly.
"Aww, I missed you too," Ed replied happily nuzzling into the monster's clothes. The two of them unaware of a small flux of magic from Toriel's soul.
LV. 20 SPECIAL ATTACK requirements met.
SPECIAL ATTACK ACTIVATED: Бренд рабства: ритуал кремації (Slavery Brand: Cremation Ritual)
"Ow! My udder hurts!" Ed yelled immediately pulling himself away. He then bent forward and rapidly started pulling his shirt away from his chest.
Ed's HP 19/20
"Wh-what's wrong?!" Toriel asked in a panic.
"Hot! Hot!" Ed yelled out as he was brought down to his knees.
Toriel took the initiative and lifted the boy's shirt. She wasn't prepared for what she revealed.
First of all it was apparent Ed had gone without a number of meals, his ribs very pronounced under his skin. And the skin over his ribs wasn't in the best of sorts either. The injuries and scaring across his chest seemed to of been applied in layers. The top layer was a full hand print that appeared to be burning right into the flesh in the dead center of his sternum. To the right was a slender reddish scar the length of a tooth pick. Both paled in comparison to the bottom layer of scaring in the shape of a thick X shape that wrapped across the entire front of his rib cage.
If Toriel didn't feel the sins crawling on her back before, then were practically burrowing into her non-existent spine then. She policed her mannerisms however, this was supposed to be a happy day.
The brand was starting to glow.
Toriel's HP: 440/440
Special attack: Active
Ed's HP: 10/20
A happy day that was about to turn to tragedy if she didn't act fast.
She dropped to her knees and placed Ed onto her lap. Through Ed's flailing she was able to place her free paw under his shirt and onto the brand. She then shut her eyes and forced her energy to form a conduit with the energy in the mark. Causing the wayward energy to flow back to her main ley matrix after a moment of resistance. In return she injected healing magic in the brand's matrix. She felt Ed start to calm down as the energy seeped through into the surrounding tissues. It was only when Ed started breathing normally that she reopened her eyes. She saw a tired sweat drenched Ed giving a smile.
"Never a dull moment, huh Goatmom?" he joked. The warm tone of his voice softened Toriel's anxiety.
"Yeah, this day is definitely keeping me on my toes as well," Toriel replied with her own smile as she moved the young mage onto her lap and continued her infusion across his chest. "I saw your fight earlier today. That were amazing."
"Yeah it was a hoot, sorry I ended up bringing work home with me though," Ed replied sluggishly. "We didn't have the space in the Inverse to fight that thing directly. This place was the first thing I thought of that could work."
"Well the most important thing is that you prevented innocent people from getting hurt in the crossfire," Toriel nodded. There was also the whole matter of him bringing the monsters that Anyu killed back from the dead, but she had no idea how to bring that up without explaining her actual involvement in the battle. That talk could lead to her having to explain the Conversion Rule. No point in exposing him to bad truths on happy days like this. "You made a lot of families very happy today, I'm so proud of you."
Ed was quiet for a few moments almost looking contemplative, which was a big deal for anyone who knew him. "Aw Toriel, what I did was just being a Hojo. Helping people in any way I can is what all Hojo should strive for, at least that was what Papa Ino and Yoshi-ji said."
"Well, if I had the ability to do so, I would happily tell them you are an exemplary of the title then," Toriel praised.
Ed's expression turned blank. "What does that mean?"
Toriel's eyes began to shine. A teaching opportunity appears! "Oh, sorry about that. Exemplary means that you are someone people should look up to, someone who-"
Ed shook his head. "Oh, no, not that. Ibiki already taught me that. What does "title" mean?"
"Oh- I- probably should of asked for clarification," Toriel mumbled tilting her head down in embarrassment.
Ed then turned confused. He turned his head to the openings. "I think she's still nearby, you may still have a chance to find her."
Toriel froze in place. Her mind wasn't prepared for that response. Her reaction pretty much just tumbled out of her mouth. "Huh?"
"You have a question for Claire?" Ed asked innocently.
"Why would I have a quest-," Toriel rambled off before her mind was able to put two and two together. She was able to cover her mouth before a snort came out. The cover-up did little to help as she began laughing.
A few moments later Ed started laughing as well.
Anyu, who was eavesdropping on the entire conversation up to that point decided right then and there to tune it out and go back to her thoughts. What a meaningful conversation. She thought. A capstone built on sarcasm, and subconscious bitterness.
The laughter ended softly with Toriel commenting. "Now that was something I needed today. Thanks Ed." She then removed her hand from Ed's chest. Processing the realization that her attempt to fix his scars had failed. The brand itself was formulated to be unable to be removed by any means. Another in a series of oversight failures from her previous life. She continued with a gentle rub on the side of the man's head. "You must be exhausted. My home is nearby, I made a nice spot for you to rest for the time being."
"Ok," Ed agreed as the pair slowly got up to their feet. He then remembered something. "Hey, do you know how I can get more snail pie?"
"Oh, you like snail pie?" Toriel asked. She was already told by Frisk what happened to the piece she gave her during the first night. So naturally she was curious about what he thought about it. She was trying to perfect her recipe. Not only for culinary ventures but for the population of the Ruins itself. Bot fly populations were decreasing alarmingly over the last few years, and so too were the chances for the Froggits, Whimsuns, Migosps, and Moldsmal to grow into their adult forms. If she was able to get them to adopt the more durable, equally viable, and most importantly, farm-able ruin snail, the matter would be resolved.
The reason it wasn't before was one simple thing, ruin snails were completely unpalatable. Not the snail itself but the slime it secretes to make their trails. For some reason their slime was both too bitter and too acidic at the same time. It also had the strange effect of making the monster that eat them unable to taste anything but the slime for a range of 24 to 48 hours.
There were many nights of pain that lead Toriel to that conclusion. None of the five families had any stake in allowing her to take part in their affairs. Not that she could blame them really. Not after the mess she left behind.
"Yeah it made me throw up rainbows it was so cool," Ed grinned.
The experiments continue...
"Lets- just focus on getting you settled in first," Toriel placated as she led Ed towards the opening. As Ed left the overlook Toriel looked back at the odd one out. She then channeled magic through her soul.
*Anyu
The violet racoon-girl turned her attention away from the sight of the world below.
*Don't wander off. I want to continue our conversation when I get done.
In response, Anyu did the same with a smirk.
*Whatever you say. Goat-mom~
Anyu then felt her own brands start to flare up. Not enough to require intervention, but jus enough to get the point across.
Toriel walked out of the overlook with her left hand clenched taught. Ed, without knowing it, became the only person she allowed to call her a goat.
Everyone else knew better, and those that didn't, would.
Home – Boss
It was quick, appeared and disappeared in less than a second. But the jolt of sensation it left behind was enough to leave Chara a panting, disheveled mess on the Void's X-axis. Moments passed in this state until he fearfully opened his eyes. Frisk's unmoved form was all he could see through his tears and negative after-images that painted the void in a dim light blue. Against his own judgment he forced a bit of his "borrowed" magic to check his partner.

Chara then placed a hand on his forehead and tried to pull himself together through the headache human magic can cause. "Why does everything have to be so complicated?" He grumbled to himself. He then tried to remedy the strain by closing his eyes. The comforts of his own personal darkness was only a temporary solace. The anxiety of his situation came back to the forefront of his mind almost immediately. This form of revisionism the Timeline is giving him and Frisk was only the bitter icing on top.
The cake being the realization that he literally had no control over his fate this time. He had to rely on hoping everything will work out. That notion flew in the face of everything he believed. Flew in the face of the very essence of determination itself really.
"Huh?" A deep voice pulled Chara out of his sulking. Making his heart stop for a moment. He forced his head up quickly and was only met by the still lifeless Frisk. Along with a wisp of yellow light and smoke the size of an orange floating nearby. The wisp swayed back and forth around Frisk's body before speaking again. "Are you well, little one?"
Chara, now pale with shock, rubbed his eyes and took another look at the wisp. Just in time to see Frisk shine with an instant white light. A tell-tale sign of a monster's Check spell. "Oh, it's a terracotta. Even more interesting," the wisp mused. Frisk was then hit with a flash of blue, followed by a green, and a red light. "No LV, that's good. A little malnourished in a few areas, but it's normal for children her age to be picky about vegetables. And she doesn't seem to be able to use Python yet, so that idea is gone," The wisp then tilted down, almost as if the being behind it had a hand to his chin. "I guess I could wait for her to wake up, I don't have any pressing matters tonight."
That proved more to Chara than most would think. His information-gathering gave him the knowledge of only two monsters in his time in the underground who were both interested in Terracotta and had a compulsion to voice their thoughts out loud. And one of the options was part of the entity stuck in the void with him so the other candidate had to be. "Dad?" Chara asked quietly.
The wisp seemed to puff out, then swiveled around.
"Dad it's me," Chara clarified/not clarified. He then saw the wisp look down at Frisk and tilt curiously. This made him giggle. "No Dad, I'm over here."
"I- need more information Chara," The wisp replied as it moved quickly in zig-zag patterns. "There are many "heres"."
This confused the child at first, but it didn't take time at all for him to figure it out. Must of dropped my image when the light show started. He realized shaking his head in frustration. He was just about to reapply before an idea crept into his head. The wisp continued its search for a few moments calling out Chara's name a few more times. On the third go around Chara rose his hands up and with a count of three he attacked. "Sneak attack!" He yelled as he reapplied his illusion right in front of the wisp.
"Gah!" The wisp yelled out before it started vibrating in place with a muffled noise. Chara couldn't hold in his laughter as the wisp regained control with a sharp inhale. The wisp then vibrated. "C'mon son, it isn't that funny."
"It's a little funny," Chara chirped trying to get a hold of himself. "It's a little funny."
The wisp allowed the child to calm himself down before it could voice it's feelings. "It- it is you," the wisp relayed, trying it's best to emphasize the unbridled emotions it's master was feeling at the moment. It made a quick look around at the surrounding nothing around them. "H-how did you- become stuck here my boy?"
"You- know what this place is?" Chara couldn't hide his confusion. Asgore wasn't a scientist. He wouldn't of known the difference between the Void and the darkness behind his eyelids.
The wisp picked up on the boy's fear. "Oh, don't be afraid Chara. This is a peaceful place. I-I'm just curious about how you ended up here. This spiritual plane isn't made for humans."
Karma probably. Chara thought bitterly. He then returned to the conversation. "I don't know. I just sort of woke up here after-" Chara played up his acting chops by looking down sadly. He then slowly hugged himself and shivered, this helped his acting but it really wasn't planned.
It was the reaction to the Void around Frisk getting colder. And if Chara still had his eyes open, he would of seen his partner start to move.
"Chara," Asgore said somberly. His form woefully inadequate for what he wanted at that time. He floated closer to his lost child and gave off a brighter glow. He saw Chara slow down his shaking in the warmth. "I-I want so much to hug you right now."
Chara wanted to say something, but nothing came up. He didn't know how to proceed, he wasn't prepared for this conversation. This timeline wasn't his. He was basically relying on the information the old lady gave him. The Chara of this timeline, the one Asgore was struggling to express his emotions to, was already gone.
It was a mercy killing, Chara admitted after the fact. That version of himself was completely mad. Gabbing about in strange languages and mindlessly flailing about.
The black eyeballs still haunt him sometimes during his resting periods.
But, knowing all this, he still had to play the part of being that Chara anyway. Survival depended on it.
Chara rose his head to meet the wisp. He opened his eyes with a smile.
Only to see Frisk with closed eyes finish rising to her feet. And he heard metaphorical warning sirens blare out in his head as Frisk charged silently at them.
"Chara? What's wron-"
Asgore didn't get much further than that before his entire form was struck down by the brunt of Frisk's stick.
The orb broke apart into particles on the X-axis. Leaving Frisk stuck in a downward slashing pose surrounded by small 2 dimensional squares. Thinking quickly, Chara dove left as Frisk closed the distance between them and tried again. The stick froze above the X-axis and a massive invisible force slammed into the area around the strike zone. The force was so strong it cause the X-axis to rise up in rod-like waves.
Her eyes flashed! Chara reeled rapidly calling his knife. He was able to bring it up in time to clash against the force of Frisk's third slam. He was able to block the stick but he couldn't block the unseen second force slamming into him immediately afterwards. He screamed as his body buckled to the floor making the x-axis wobble in the same long line formation.
Chara's Health: 44/99
Not wanting to entertain another strike Chara dropped his illusion just as Frisk hopped up unnaturally high. Frisk didn't seem to notice the lack of opponent as she drove her stick downward while in midair. She landed causing a wide arcing shockwave of dime-sized particles of white and light-blue light to scatter. It took a few moments for the wave of energy to dissipate which only then did Frisk notice someone was missing.
Now incorporeal, Chara was able to gain much needed distance to try and think. He turned back panting with his hand on his chest. Frisk started looking around in a saunter, her eyes white and lacking pupils. Her knuckles practically white as small cracking sounds could be heard from the unfortunate branch.
"(I hate that I can see the irony in this.)" Chara remarked quietly to himself. Trying hard to get over his feelings about the situation. He then sat down and began to ponder how he was going to deal with this new Frisk. That is, if it was even Frisk in control. A few minutes passed in this quiet contemplation until Chara heard a loud pop. He rose his head again, then his eyes widened at the new sight.
Another Frisk had appeared next to the original Frisk. This one was clothed in a white shirt with big sleeves, and a long red skirt with a large bow in the back.
The most important thing Chara could notice was this new Frisk's missing face.
Chara's Health was maxed out.
His concentration broke when he felt healing magic tend to his pains along with an older man's voice call out in his head. "(Having trouble Matter-monkey?)"
Chara looked over his shoulder and saw a mass of dark ooze rise out of the axis. "(Were you there the whole time?)" He asked, hiding his relief as the ooze formed itself into an amorphous mass of bone fragments, dust, and timeline science. With a large fractured bone-like mask affixed predominantly near the top of the mass.
Chara watched in the corner of his eye as Frisk looked at the mass for a few moments then went back to searching.
"(No, I could feel the vibrations all the way to the fracture line,)" The ooze man signed with the small fragments of what was assumed to be hands. "(I guess your little meeting didn't work out?)"
"(Well,)" Chara scratched the back of his neck. "(It was going good until my patsy killed my Dad and then became two people.)"
"(Ah, Terracotta. I don't wish them on my worse enemies.)" The gooey skeleton laughed bitterly. He then noticed Chara going back into his concentration and "miko" Frisk pulling out a small stick with white ribbons. This caused the man to become concerned for his fellow prisoner. "(Dreemur, I don't think what you're doing is the best use of your time right now.)"
"(Oh? And why's that?)" Chara replied in frustration.
"(Miko placers can detect ghosts.)"
The faceless shrine maiden then gave a whistle and pointed her stick straight at Chara. Before the fallen human could do anything he felt himself become tangible again. The original Frisk than rose her hand into the air with another bright flash from her eyes. The skeleton, using his experience, slid back a few meters away as another pure barrier materialized in his place.
"Oh hell- oh fuck!" Chara remarked suddenly, formerly in frustration from the sight of the barrier. Then laterally in fear when he saw the maiden, sans stick, toss a small slip of paper at him. A second later the paper exploded with a bright white flash. Chara wasn't able to get out of the blast radius in time.

He yelled as the blast force sent him careening backwards through the air. He landed on his back a few centimeters away from the barrier wall, momentarily dazed. Completely unaware of the placer pulling out another slip of paper. Only for her arm to be lightly touched by the original Frisk. The placer's head turned to her creator, who then shook her head softly. The faceless child seemed to have gotten the message well enough. She tucked the paper slip away and bowed. Frisk then patted the miko's head. The placer then started to disappear. Frisk waved it goodbye, then materialized her stick.
Chara didn't see any of these actions. But Gaster sure did.
He watched the human prince prep his knife for an advance, and couldn't help himself from shaking his amorphous head. He, unlike Chara came from the past of the current Timeline. He knew how terracotta operate. At least from a behavioral standpoint.
Terracota, when left to their own devices, refuse to go all out on those they find out are weaker than themselves.
The megalomaniac never had a chance.
Frisk, who took it upon herself to begin another application of wood violence charged forward. Chara responded by slashing out wildly. Frisk juked back, making the slash too short. Chara hopped forward to attempt to close the distance but the knife was caught on Frisk's stick mid-swing. For some reason eternally foreign to the first fallen child, the stick gave off sparks as the blade rode across the side of it as Frisk pushed it away. Frisk capitalized on the deflection by slamming the wood against the side of Chara's head. Frisk then twirled clockwise and sent the stick right into the back of Chara's knees. The force behind them sent the fallen child feet out from under him, assisted by the lack of friction the X-axis of the void had.
Chara fell on his back against the X-axis, and he tried to react but Frisk was already on him.

He couldn't move anything, couldn't think of anything. He was only able to numbly watch his partner raise her stick one final time.
Frisk's face was expressionless as she brought the stick barreling down.
And just for an instant, Chara had a thought.
He wondered- if this was what his monster friends saw.
What his- foster parents saw.
What- Asriel saw.
That thought, really scared him.
