Chapter 4 First Meeting
It was Saturday night. I was going to meet Polly. I had to find a way out without waking the others. Hopefully they were going to be heavy sleepers tonight.
"Alright boys! Time to hit the bunks!" Skipper said yawning.
"Nighty night!" Rico said.
"Good night!" Kowalski said.
"Sweet dreams!" I added. I had to wait a little. I went under my covers and texted Polly that I would be on my way over soon. She texted back,
"Valerie Mae just went to sleep! I'll see ya soon!" Then I waited for about 15 minutes before I finally heard snoring from the other three. I quietly went down. Rico snoring the loudest, Kowalski dreaming about Doris, and Skipper dreaming about fighting Hans. I quietly went up the ladder and out of the zoo. It was quite peaceful at night. I waddled to the address Polly gave me and the extra directions that I'd have to go up to the top floor of the apartment where the fire escape would be. I carefully stayed out of sight where people were taking late night walks whether it was coming home from a date or coming home from work. I eventually made it. She was right. It was literally so close to my home! Luckily I sneaked the grapple hook! I shot at the top and was there within a split second. There was a big window. This was it. I knocked on the window lightly. No response. I was about to text her when suddenly a lamp turned on. The blinds had a silhouette of a penguin. Then the figure reached down and opened the blinds. There in front of me stood a penguin my height. She had blue eyes like mine, her head feathers had little curl. She then opened the window.
"Wow. It's really you!" Polly began. So she really was a penguin.
"Nice to see you?" I asked shyly.
"Well come on in!" She let me in and I saw most of her place. There was a nice big couch, a flat screen TV with a game console, a few magazines and newspapers on the table, behind the TV was a doorway to the kitchen which I can tell was small but comfortable, and a hallway on the right that probably lead to their bedrooms and bathroom. She closed the window and blinds behind us.
"Your place is really nice." I complimented.
"Why thank you!" We sat on the couch. "So this is actually kind of great!" She said happily. "I finally get to see you, another penguin! I haven't really seen another ever since I left home."
"Oh? You said you had sisters? They live far from here?"
"They're back in Toronto. Canada. I'm a Canadian penguin. I was trained back there to become a therapy penguin for Valerie Mae. Unfortunately that meant I had to leave my sisters." She said sadly.
"You still speak to them right?"
"Absolutely." She said.
"Well now that we're here, I want to say thank you. I have a need to get out if the zoo now." I smiled to her.
"You're absolutely welcome! My job as a therapy penguin is to make people like Valerie Mae happy. Basically where she goes, I go. A lot of people crowd around because they find it amazing to see a penguin wandering around with a human." Polly laughed.
"Lucky. My brothers go out but we travel secretly through hidden places in the zoo. Our zookeeper is pretty strict. The other animals in the zoo however can be a bit loud at times. We're often awake at night because of our neighbours the lemurs. They drive us insane at times."
"Well I'm sorry to hear that. Valerie Mae has no idea about this either. I feel kinda bad for keeping this a secret, but I mean, a therapy penguin needs to make new friends too right?"
"Absolutely. I won't tell Skippah, Kowalski, and Rico about this either. They'd probably ban me from leaving on my own. I don't want them on my case 24/7."
"That's understandable. Do you wanna play a game? We're gonna have to be quiet though! Valerie Mae will wake up!"
"Sure! What game are we playing?" She waddled over to the drawer of the tv shelf and then pulled out a game I wanted but never had the console.
"Lunacorns race cart? I always wanted to play that!" I told her.
"Well you are in luck!" She set up the tv but put it on mute. We played for a good hour. I was so happy about my new friend. I smiled to myself as we played.
