Review-
KenosDC1: Haha, thanks! On Theo's manipulation magic, it will be explained more in detail but it is basically derived from memory magic and transformation magic. Surprisingly handy in cooking (lol you might not understand now but it'll will end up being mentioned in much later chapters) Langris is kind of the main ship (ish) but they end up having a complicated relationship but I wouldn't mind shipping Theo with anyone. Honestly, you can tell me who you ship Theo with and I'll put it in. Again, thanks with the review!
Just a question, is it Patri or Patry or Patolli?
One more thing, I actually calculated the age difference between Finral and Langris and found it mostly is 1 year and four months and I needed Theo to be between and get a good zodiac sign for him as well. So I changed the ages here now and I have done it for the last chapter. Down at the A/N there will be the list of spells that Theo has now (in the past, not present day-Asta and Yuno´s time)
This is Langris' thoughts
This is Theo's thoughts
Theo is 14 years old and 11 months (almost 15)
Langris is 14 years old and 5 months
Finral is 15 years old and 1 month.
You may be wondering why it's so specific but it's manly so I can remember their ages and when they did/going to do their Magic Knights Exam.
"Nope! Nope! Nuh-uh!" Theo shook his head violently. "Absolutely not! I will never do such a thing! Ever!"
"Look, we still can roam around in the garden. And dance. We wouldn't have to hang out in secret."
"Yeah, but I'll be your servant, not a friend! I don't want that!"
"We can still be friends, servants can be friends with their masters, sometimes. All you have to do is be very respectively around my Mother and Father and never mention Finral to them. And obviously listen to me, since I will be your master. In front of my Mother and Father, you must call me Master Langris."
Theo grumbled under his breath some curse words. "This better be worth it. Do I get paid?"
"Yes, but it isn't much. Only 500 yuls per week."
Theo's eyes widened, "500! I'll be rich with that money. Come 500 yuls come!" This is totally worth it!
Langris smiled at Theo's reaction, of course the money was nothing to the noble.
"Oh? Hey, Langris?" Theo asked, suddenly the excitement gone.
"What?" Langris combed his hair, looking into the mirror.
"Are you going to join the Magic Knights?"
"Of course. All nobles do. Why?"
Theo paused for a moment, trying to find the right words to say.
"I want to join the Magic Knights, just like Zara Ideale did."
The noble boy laughed, "That's good joke, Theo. Could you believe if there was another commoner in a Magic Knights squad!?"
"R-right." Theo was quiet, hurt from what Langris said.
After the noble finished cleaning himself up, preparing to meet his Mother and Father with the request to make Theo his servant, he noticed Theo was quieter than usual.
Do I have to ask or can I just let whatever is bothering him continue? What would I say? 'Why the long-face'? No, that doesn't sound noble-like. Seriously, what do I say! N-not like I am actually going to say anything.
"Are you ready yet?" Langris looked over to the older boy. He wore simple clothes, showing that he was a commoner and soon-to-be-servant. His black hair was a problem. Theo had already received his grimoire, which strangely enough wasn't in his leather-bound pouch; Theo never put his grimoire in his pouch yet he kept around, and Langris noticed that something was inside but did not question it.
The noble sighed, did he have to do all the work around here? Langris grabbed Theo by his tie, gentle enough not to choke him.
The commoner blinked in surprise, not sure what Langris would do.
"Honestly, -bend down, you're too tall- how do you expect my parents to allow you become my personal servant if you can't even dress properly?" The noble combed Theo's hair, who really didn't know how to react. "Don't you have a comb, dim-wit?"
"A..comb?" The black haired boy stared blankly, relaxing a bit, the tension in his shoulders gone. "No. I just use my fingers."
"Hm, I see."
The noble finished and was satisfied with how Theo looked. Almost.
"Stand up straighter. You'll get back problems hunched over like that."
Yeesh. Theo thought to himself, following Langris' orders. I never thought he could get even more uptight than normal. He must be super nervous.
"Fix your face. You look depress."
The poor boy tried to do what Langris was saying.
"Too taunt. You'll exhaust your face muscles like that, now to fix your hair again.." The noble boy reach up to fix a few strands of hair and he commented, "At least your hair's nice and soft."
"Thank you, Master Langris." Theo said through gritted teeth, an irk mark appearing on his face. "For one single compliment and about five insults about my posture and the stuff I do not own. I can totally feel the friendship."
Langris stopped trying to fix Theo after that. I hope this is good enough to impress Mother and Father. The noble went down a series of halls and corridors before stopping in front of a set of double doors with the simple-dressed boy trailing behind.
"Ready?"
"No."
Langris sighed, turning to face Theo. "What is it?"
"I have just one request to make. I want to be able to join the Magic Knights."
The noble stared at his friend, now knowing it wasn't a joke this time. Sucking a breath in he said, "It's not up to me. It's up to your performance once we go inside. If my Mother and Father are willing for you to become a servant then it's possible for you to get in the Magic Knights."
Theo had stars in his eyes, which made Langris nearly smile at the adorable sight. Now motivated, Theo was actually willing to become a servant and possibly join a Magic Knights squad.
"I'll do my best and you'll do yours."
"Tch. Of course I'll do my best. You're the one who has to be careful and not mess up." With that, Langris opened the double doors, revealing a splendid study room.
Scene 8
In the study hall, both the Lord and Lady of the House of Vaude were observing Theo and chatting with Langris.
Theo held a platter of porcelain cups filled to the brim, he place them down before the Lady and Langris and placed strongly brewed coffee for the Lord.
The boy walked over the side by the double doors, waiting there if the Vaude family needed anything else. He stood up straight, listening to Langris' demands for once.
I need to do this well in order to join the Magic Knights. It'll be easier this way than on my own. To get in any squad... will be difficult.
The three of them spoke in hushed voices, clearly elegant and proper.
Clad in wealthy clothes, Lord Ledior stared at Langris, his son.
"Langris, the boy you have requested seems.. New to serving. He didn't know where the cook was, and brought our drinks late. But, if this servant can satisfy your needs then it is fine with me. He can be your personal servant."
Lady Liliana, admired her son, who was becoming more and more responsible. "You're doing even better than your… brother. I am so proud of you."
Langris only put up a smiling face. How do I tell them about Theo's request?
"If we are finished, you are dismissed."
Now. This is my only chance.
"Father, I do have one more request and this is a serious matter."
Lord Ledior's eyebrows furrowed. "You're not done?"
Lady Liliana stared curiously at her son, her pride and the soon-to-be Head of the House of Vaude.
"No, Father I am not. As you know, I will be taking the Magic Knights Exam and joining a Magic Knights squad. Which ever squad I join, I will not have servants to do my bidding. My only self-ish request is for you to allow my personal servant, Theo, to join the same Magic Knights squad so that he may serve me."
Lord Ledior looked over to the new servant boy standing at the doors, before looking back to Langris.
"..Why? He's a commoner, Langris, a commoner. Why would you want him to join the same Magic Knight squad as you. He will think that you two are equals. Why?"
"Father, I know you do not want another commoner to join but I know it is for the best. Because a servant will always lay down their life for their master. Theo, my personal servant, will protect me if needed. Even to lay his own life for mine."
Understanding that Langris could live longer if the new servant was there to always serve the Heir, Lord Vaude smiled, "You are very intelligent, Langris. You will always be the genius in the Vaude family. I will grant this request as it is from you. You are dismissed."
The boy stood up and stalked towards the double doors; Theo, understanding that the two were leaving, bowed to the Lord Ledior and the Lady Liliane. Together, the two boys left, their footsteps receding.
(Why in the world is their family have so many L names. Ledior, Liliane, and Langris.)
Scene 9
Exactly a year later-
The noble and his new personal servant, Theo were training to get stronger, preparing for the Magic Knights Exam, which was only a few months away. Currently, Theo has turned 15 years old nearing 16, while Langris turned 15 years old only five (5) months ago.
Both held out their grimoire which floated in the air, emitting a tinted glow.
(A/n: I'm actually going to describe Theo's grimoire later, which isn't some 6th or 7th leaf clover like a ton of black clover fanfics. Because Theo is kind of a normal guy. You know, with a elf´s soul in his body.)
"Ready?" Theo called out to Langris, in a fighting stance.
"Of course I'm nobility, commoner." The noble stated calmly with a smug smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He prepare some spheres from his offensive-type spatial magic.
Theo concentrated on the flow of his mana, solidifying it, then he brought up his arm, so that his palm would face his target, Langris.
"Manipulation magic: Piercing Needles of Deception!"
This spell allows the user, in this case, Theo to attack with magical large, thin needles If someone were to be hit by this spell, they would remember times when someone lied to them, when they lied to others, and/or just makes lies to make them insecure, lowering their defenses.
His master and friend smirked, ready for the attack, releasing the spheres of spatial magic sending the magical needles into space. He sent the spheres in a circle around Theo, causing an explosion of dust and debris.
With no hesitation, Langris sent spheres of his magic, each one after another. "If you can't survive training, Theo, you'll never be able to become a Magic Knight."
Theo was able the dodge most of the spheres, except for a couple that grazed his clothing. He knew Langris could sense him if he were to move using mana detection. Instead, the commoner stayed in the dust that didn't seem it would cloud away.
Since he's staying in the dust, he'll store his mana allowing it to grow and then use it against me. This time I will be on guard. Langris watched the cloud of dust, slightly tensed, and used his mana sensing abilities. He had to admit that Theo was better at mana sensing-no,no, for a commoner.
I almost acknowledged him. If Mother and Father could read my thoughts then I would become like my half-brother. A pathetic excuse for a noble. A grand failure.
The noble boy now a teen, released another round of spatial magic spheres. He kept his focus on the battle, leaving his thoughts for another time; But it was too late..
Theo had been grazed on the cheek after the second round of the globs that Langris had sent at him. Watching the magic send away the training ground, he got a idea. Theo faced a few of the magical orbs that were rushing toward him, preparing to use his magic on them.
When it got closer and closer to him, the teen stopped it using his magic by controlling the spheres. Theo focused on bringing the three spheres into one big sphere; the wind whipped around and the dust swirled with it. The big orb of spatial magic sucked in anything not secured to the ground.
Langris' eyes widen at the sight. Quickly, the noble made a ball of spatial magic as big as the one Theo manipulated. The newer servants inside the House were frightened, while the older servants continued to do their duties.
A seemingly late-middle age woman named Madeline (the same woman who first encountered Langris and Theo together) told several of the newest servants very nonchalantly. "It's usually worse than this when the two of them are battling. You get use to it after awhile, plus any damage that happens are fixed by His personal servant."
One of the servants, the one who was the most terrified from the fighting occurring outside asked, "Why do they fight in the first place, does His personal servant refuse to listen to Master Langris?"
The old-ish maid laughed at the servant's comment. "Of course he listens to His master. Those two were friends before Theo joined servitude, I think the only reason he became a servant was so they could 'hang out'-I think that's the word the two used- in public. Master Langris is also training to take the Magic Knights Exam, and rumors say that His servant, Theo will as well."
"Wow!"
"A servant becoming a Magic Knight, impossible!"
"Isn't he just a commoner?"
"Wow, that's a lot of control for a commoner."
"He's so cool!"
Outside, Langris and Theo held up a huge ball of spatial magic; Though Theo was starting to strain holding up the sphere. Projecting his mana for added strength, Theo grunted and released the sphere.
Seeing Theo's magical sphere come near, Langris released his spatial magical ball. Both teenage boys ran behind some columns for shelter as the two spheres collided, erupting into a huge explosion in the air.
The wind rushed in their ears, the sound of the explosion extremely loud, making Theo's ears pop. After the noise calmed down, Theo walked away from the column
"SO COOL!" The commoner shouted from excitement. "It just went like-BOOOM!-and then-BAM!"
Langris strides to where Theo was, unimpressed and cool as possible. "Is that all you have?" An irk mark appeared on his face when he realize that his training buddy wasn't paying attention to Langris.
"Look up, Langris!" Theo gasped, the two spatial orbs when collided made the whole training grounds in sparkles.
"Hmph, I will not." The teen turned around, expecting Theo to follow suite. Instead, the commoner admired the sparkles in the sky.
"Who know something so dangerous could make something that beautiful?" Theo mused, with a soft smile on his lips.
Langris scoffed at Theo, "Who knew you were so emotional for a teenage boy?"
"Whatever, Langris. You just don't know how to appreciate stuff."
Theo turn to face the noble teen, preparing for another round of training.
Langris stared at Theo, not sure how to feel about his sentimentalism. I guess it was kind of cute.
E-EH? WHat tHE-ErASE tHEse ThOUghTs! ArUgH!
Theo was ready, with his grimoire out and open. Taking advantage of Langris being lost in thought, he decided to fire a spell.
Whether he likes it or not, not staying focus is bad; this will teach him to stay on task.
"Manipulation magic: Rain of Deadly Arrows!"
This time instead of thin, long needles, he summoned arrows to rain down.
Langris snapped out of his reverie and hurried to summon his orbs of spatial magic, this time enlarging them slightly to take out more arrows.
Theo grunted at his failed attempt. "Manipulation Magic: Web of Lies!"
This spell is mainly used as a binding spell, though it can be used as attack or defense. The purpose is to capture the target or protect the caster. It is made with magical webs. The more the target struggles the tighter it gets or if the target lies while binded by this spell, the cocoon tightens. If the the caster uses the spell to protect themselves, a large ball made from webs encases the spell caster.
Immediately, threads grew out of the ground and intertwined to create webs. It surrounded Theo in a ball-like structure as in an order of defense.
Langris smirked once more, preparing a round spatial sphere releasing it towards his servant/friend. He watched the ball explode, the training area clouded with so much dust. The noble turn away, only slightly frantic that his only friend may have died. What happened was Theo sensed the attack coming and quickly escaped the webbed ball. As the spatial sphere came closer ready to possibly kill him, Theo used another spell, Manipulation Magic: Subtle Shift, which randomly could change the movement of an attack slightly at random. This gave him some time to dodge the spatial sphere as it steered slightly off course.
H-He's probably fine. Sure everyone dies, but that pathetic commoner wouldn't let anyone or anything kill him.
Langris took another glance at the cloud of dust that was beginning to recede. "Tch. It only means he isn't cut out for the Magic Knights."
It was only when he felt being prodded by something sharp on his back, the teen boy whipped around to be face-to-face with Theo. His black hair was being swayed by the wind while his blue eyes sparkled with delight. There was a mischievous glint in them as well, and his proud smirk was very evident.
T-too ClOSe!
"Looks like I won. You owe me 1000 yuls now~" Theo leaned in closer, making Langris blush hard. "Unless you want to offer something else?"
The gay boi who couldn't accept himself, pretending to be straight (Langris, of course) stuttered so bad, "N-no, I'm a noble. I d-d-don't owe you anything!" He pushed Theo away while leaning away.
"Of course you do! We made a bet last night, remember?! Unless you couldn't remember under the influence of so much alcohol. Hmph, that sucks."
Langris itched to smack Theo on the head for relaying some of last night's events so loudly but he kept his calm. Underage drinking was unacceptable to be mention. He still couldn´t believe that Theo had snuck in wine from the kitchen after his shift last night. "It wasn't that much alcohol."
"You're right. You only just one shot but then BAM, you went in a total drunk mode. I should've known you would have been a lightweight."
Extremely embarrassed, this time Langris actually smacked Theo on his head causing the other to yelp in pain.
"Could you be any louder, commoner!"
Yup, the spoiled little runt did keep the whole "commoner" nickname after the years had pass.
Theo sucked in a breath, before shouting, "LAST NIGHT, LANGRIS WAS DRU-"
The servants that were actually doing their work looked over at the two boys outside.
A red-faced noble clamped a hand over Theo to shut him up. He then dragged his servant to his room, mainly to scold his friend.
"Are they usually like that?" asked one of the newer servants.
"Yup!" The same middle-age maid from before answered. "It's so cute, right?!"
Jeez, is she really fangirling over those two?
Scene 10
(This is more of a flash back)
!Important!
TW: some anger issues, blood, violent urges, death
You can skip to the end of this scene and there will be a summary underneath
About a year ago-Theo in this scene is 13. Before meeting Finral and Langris.
1st POV
I laid upon my firm bed, staring up at the ceiling. I was angry, very angry.
"Those damn peasants. Those damn royals. I hate them!" I yelled into the silence. Nobody except me lived in this ugly house. All because of those desperate peasants.
I could be living with my family if it wasn't for such pathetic creatures. Why do they have to exist?
I tried to relax, to calm myself down but it was futile, the storm of rage was brewing inside of me. In my fury, I jumped from my bed, clenching and unclenching my fists. I allowed myself subject to the anger and frustration from my past to build up and fuel the storm inside.
I grabbed the chair to my study desk and threw it against the wall, not bothering to watch it crumble. I then shoved my wooden closet to the ground and turned on my heel as it collapsed behind me.
Still, I was not satisfied.
I started to punch the walls, watching scarlet liquid drip down my fists yet I kept punching, numb to both the physical and emotional pain.
Suddenly, I felt pain yet comfort. It must be the other being inside of me, who was desperate to calm me down. In shock, I paused allowing myself to cry.
I stopped attacking the wall actually noticing home much of a mess that I created in my rage. Blood was splattered on the wall, dripping onto my desk. The closet was completely destroyed with broken planks and dust scattered around. The chair had a similar fate with the back gone although three of the legs survived so it still could be used if some modifications were made.
A tired sigh escaped my lips as I put my head between my knees.
I-I'm sorry I lost control of myself. Thank you for helping me, my dear friend.
Whoever else was inside me, pulsed gently, cautious in my fragile state.
Right, right. I have a hatred for royals and peasants, and I know though I am upset I shouldn't be so rash. The best way to go about things is by planning.
A certain memory appears in my mind, though it was not one of mine.
All I could see was red. So much red. And light. More specifically that human's light magic. The humans were invading and I could do nothing. Screams and startled shouts pierced the air, which was in deep contrast to what was happening only moments before.
The elves were falling, stabbed by the light magic. Most were dead, only a very few alive.
My friends. My family. How?
"HOW?!" I screamed, mourning the fallen. In the chaos, I barely noticed Patolli but when I did, I dragged myself over to him. My last friend.
Patolli's eyes were shocked when he saw me, reaching out to touch him. He bent down to cradle my pathetic body. My only living friend cried as he held tight to me.
"It's okay now. I can die knowing I got to at least say bye to one of my friends."
A light magic sword pierced my body, which erupted in intense pain. I was rolling from consciousness to unconsciousness. My body felt like it could explode from the heat given from the light magic sword. I looked to the side and saw Licht, our leader who should have been promised a joyous day must now grieve. I could of sworn of seeing dark rings forming above him. Am I imagining things?
"Samael! Please! Don't leave me!"
I coughed up blood, weakening by the second. I tried to keep my focus between Patolli and Licht. I'm dying.. right?
My sight was blurry but I could still make out the outline of Patolli. I lifted up a trembling hand to his tear-stained face.
"I...know..we.." I coughed up more blood, my breath was ragged and my lungs screamed for air. "Meet...sun...Good..bye."
Patolli pulled me in closer, "Go-goodbye, Samael." I closed my eyes as blackness covered and my body seemed to initiate a total shutdown.
As the pain started to subside, I heard one last thing that made me smile sadly.
"I will see you again, Samael. I promise."
Then the numbness began.
—
The other soul pulsed violently, as if it held rage against someone. Theo already knew his friend hated humans, judging from his many memories that he started to receive when he was nine.
Don't worry, my friend. We will have our revenge when the time comes.
For the time being, I'll be a normal teen who's really a freak.
The soul within me, seem to be smiling gently from the way it pulsed. Almost if were laughing.
Theo physically laughed from the feeling.
The two of us shared more happy memories, though it seemed like it was just Theo in the room laughing and sometimes saying stuff aloud which would make no sense to any one watching the scene.
Summary: Theo is in his room, in his run-down house. Theo gets provoked when he thinks on peasants and royals of the Clover Kingdom. In his anger, he destroys objects in his household until the other soul inside him comforts him. The other soul also shares a memory, which is when the humans started to attack and invade the elves and how he protected his friend, Patolli, before he died. The memory also reveals the other's soul name-Samael and him seeing Licht grief. Theo promises revenge for Samael on humans because based on the memories he has received since he was nine, the humans should be destroyed. The flashback/scene ends with the two sharing happy memories.
Scene 11
It is currently September, six months after the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony.
Theo looked slightly nervous as he waited in line with other people, mostly nobles and even some commoners, which definitely surprised the teen.
"Stop staring, commoner." Langris stated calmly with a seemingly somewhat amiable expression but Theo knew that was not his personality.
"I can't help it. I've only really been in your House for a long time already-"
The noble held a hand as to silence him as a few other nobles from behind were watching them.
"Silence, servant." Langris said that with a lopsided smile but there was an edge of demand.
Theo didn't speak more after that, only conversing with Samael, the other soul within him.
I never thought he would change to..this.
It is same with the human who attacked us; He told us lies and then showed his true colors.
At least we have each other.
You can always count on me, Theo. I will always protect you. You are the only human that I will ever tolerate, even when you´re annoying.
Okay, I´m going to skip over the slight insult and take the compliment. He inhaled sharply, walking forwards. Thanks. For everything, Samael.
Of course, Theo. I´m your friend after all. I´ve been the only friend who´s been by your side all your life.
That´s very true. I just wish-
"Next!¨
The black-haired boy looked up, cutting off the inner conversation. There was a mage behind some kind of counter, his face was covered with his hood. He seem to ask a few questions to each person before checking their grimoire.
As the line progressed at a steady pace, Theo realized that the mage also gave them a number to each examinee.
Man, I´m so nervous!
Theo heard a chuckle in his mind, relaxing at the sound.
I remember when I got my grimoire…
Didn't you hate it?
W-well, at first but that was the day I met all of my best friends! And Patolli...
Jeez, there was no reason to get so defensive.
"Next!"
Theo realized Langris had already went inside, especially when the hooded mage stared at the commoner teen expectantly. Slightly bashful, he walked up to the stand.
"Name, and where you're from." He signal for the commoner to tell him.
"O-oh, my name is Theo Kubo."
"Where you from, kid?" The mage asked gruffly, raising an eyebrow.
"From… the town of Himura."
As Theo expected, the man's eyes widen at the name.
"That town has long been destroyed. No one survived. You're lying!"
"I'm not lying. I was in hiding, you could say." Theo felt uneasy as he heard muttering behind him. The nobles behind him did not seem to happy to be waiting so long.
"Look, I'm done here, can I just get my number or whatever?"
The mage replied quickly, mostly in fear. "A-ah, sure. Just give me your grimoire."
In a hurry, the commoner handed his grimoire over. Theo liked his grimoire and its style. It was a deep purple with four big silver webs from the corners of the book. More silver webs come from the big main webs, in the center was a beige three-leaf clover. The spine had two webs each on the bottom and top with a beige three-leaf clover in the middle
"Here it is!"
He really prized his grimoire so much but was surprised when the mage looking at his grimoire said, "Is that really a grimoire? What's with all the weird designs?"
The boy gave the man a closed-eye smile, very irritated having to take so long just to get inside. "If you want to test the theory out. I would gladly demonstrate my grimoire's powers on you."
A bead of sweat fell down on the mage's cheek. "N-no. Your number is 69." He handed over the purple grimoire to its rightful owner.
(yes, that was on purpose.)
Theo took it and left, not bothering to say 'thank you'. And why should he, for such troublesome service?
He walked into the gigantic Colosseum, slightly admiring the huge structure. He saw a wide balcony with eight tall chairs but saw no one around. Searching through the huge crowd of nobles, Theo spotted Langris far off, not bothering to chat with anyone.
Should I really go over?
Langris was standing by one of giant pillars which Theo presumed to help support the place. The boy sighed to himself before walking over to his friend.
"Master Langris, why the 'Don't-talk-to-me' face?"
The noble jolted slightly from Theo's presence, as the older teen tended to suppress his mana for reasons Langris did not know. Perhaps for stealth. Langris noticed the other boy carry his grimoire in hand as per usual, instead of inside his pouch.
"Why do you want to know?" The spoiled runt huffed before looking toward the crowd.
Great, he won't tell me. Not in front of all these dumb nobles. I'll have to ask later.
"Nevermind that.." Theo paused, trying to think of something to say. "What squad do you hope to join?"
"Hope? Tch. You mean 'will get in'. I'm going to join the Golden Dawn. I heard they are one of the best although they are a new squad."
Knowing Langris, he would want to be in the best. If the Golden Dawn is so great in just a year, it wouldn't be surprising if they would become the best squad.
"If I had a choice in the matter, I would have chosen the Grey Deer or the Coral Peacocks. Mainly because both squads are pretty decent, besides the current Wizard King came from the Grey Deer, at least from what I've heard."
Langris gave Theo a side-eye glance. "So, do you regret becoming a servant in order to become a Magic Knight?"
"No, of course not. Now that I'm your servant, I'll be stuck to you, so be prepared to get constantly annoyed." Theo teased, although what he said was a partial lie. He did have regrets for becoming a stupid servant to such a spoiled runt, even if they were friends.
There was a great sound of squawking echoing in the Colosseum and Theo looked up and saw the infamous anti-birds. Anti-birds are birds that have black feathers on their back, wings, and around their face. Known to be sensitive to mana and although their cute appearance, they are such annoying creatures. If someone had low mana, those birds would try to grab food or just pick on people like that.
Thankfully, peasants are the only ones with such a weak amount of mana. And there aren't any here.
Most of the candidates consisted of nobles, which came to no surprise, and many had only one or two. The commoners who were brave enough to try out for the Magic Knights Entrance Exam had about three or four anti-birds fluttering around them, some pecking the unfortunate teens. There were no royals as royalty were given a free pass.
Theo watched as five anti-birds came over, ready to peck their target.
Ugh. I guess I have to get rid of these pests.
The commoner moved closer to Langris, since the anti-birds seemed to avoid him (mostly since he could appear intimidating despite his short height) observing that two anti-birds left the flock that were coming over.
The three anti-birds were about to land on his shoulder, when Theo open his grimoire, releasing his mana towards the infamous annoying birds.
This should scare them away.
The anti-birds flew away immediately but Theo realized a second later, it probably wasn't because of him.
It was because…
..
..
..
..
..
The eight Magic Knights Captains have arrived.
Oh. My. Lord. There all right there. In front of me!
Each of them sat in the eight rigid chairs that Theo saw earlier. In the center, the Crimson Lions' captain stood obviously proud though he had a stern look about him. He wore a red mantle with two orange braids hanging from it, as his cape fluttered. He noticed he had a strange star marking on the captain's forehead.
"Today will mark the beginning of what could be a lifetime of fighting and protecting the Clover Kingdom. We, the captains of our faithful squads, will observe and decide on whether or not you are qualified to join our ranks! Your future is decided by how well you pass these tests."
Theo felt the awe and excitement bubble within him just looking at the captains.
Each captain have the strength of 100 mages.. So-awesome!
He notice on Captain Fugueloen's, the Crimson Lions' captain, left there was a cold man, with a white braid hanging in front of his face. The gleaming white hair from behind looked almost like eagle wings, proud and ready to take flight. He wore his squad's ultra feathered cape with the Silver Eagles' insignia embroidered on his left shoulder.
Captain of the Silver Eagles, Nozel Silvia. So cold that it's hot!
But...
Theo squinted at the blue cross flory fitchy at the hanging from the end of his braid.
Silva..He's a rude royal.
"The first test will be simple. You are to fly on a broom; By flying on a broom, we will be able to see how much mana and control you have. If you can not do this, then you should not be here. Captain Vengeance, if you will." The Vermillion gave a nod towards a man with the mask.
Theo stared at the recently new squad captain. So.. His violet eyes met the commoner as his grimoire's pages flipped. ..Mysterious.. The calm smile that tugged at his lips as his long golden beige mantle swayed...So hot! "World Tree Magic: Magic Tree Descent!"
Theo stopped staring when he saw the ceiling of the Colosseum turn dark. His blue eyes widen as a huge tree came out of a swirling storm. The roots of the tree became thinner and turned into brooms.
Woah! His magic is so cool! He must be of nobility.. But he seems.. gentle.
...
"Now, with your hearts ablaze let us begin!"
He passed the first couple of test exceptionally well, although the boy wasn't able to create anything for the creation magic test. It made sense given that his magic was more to control another's magic or to attack with webs, not creating something... original. The only thing Theo was able to create ever was a whip or general weapons, even so that required his grimoire; He was aiming to impress the captains in a good way not with weapons which could make his personality seem twisted, besides many of the candidates could create something, even the commoners who came to the Magic Knights Entrance Exam, all without their grimoires.
If only my magic could be more original..
"The last test is the best way to impress us with your skill and combat, after all being a Magic Knights means you will be forced to fight!" Captain Fuegoleon shouted, startling some of the examinees, including Theo. "You will fight off with another examinee. There are no rules, except no maiming or killing. We have healing mages on stand-by so FIGHT TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT!"
The poor older teen cover his ears from all the shouting the Crimson Lion captain was doing.
I don't think I want to join that squad. Next to the weird foreigner buff guy.
Theo scanned the crowd of many higher-uppies. Hmm.. That one. The commoner locked eyes on a tall noble with blue eyes and short blonde hair. He knew it was rude to even consider talking to a noble or a royal but Theo didn't really care about that. After all, it is the Magic Knights Entrance Exam. Nobles who would put a fit probably wouldn't get in a squad and the commoner was going to take full advantage of that.
He quickly made his way to the tall noble that he spotted before some other noble could ask to be the blonde's opponent.
Theo gave a seemingly innocent grin, "I would be honored if I could be your opponent."
I swear if he brushes me off.. I'll have to look for a new opponent and every one else seems totally unworthy. And Langris told me not to battle him. Probably because I could possibly beat him.
When the noble laughed, the commoner teen expected ridicule, instead the blonde said something that surprised him.
"Haha! Sure, but first let's bet on the outcome. I bet 21,000 yuls that I'll win! What about you?" Then he paused like he remembered something. "Oh, waaaiit! You're a commoner, I don't expect you can bet much money."
Theo was angered by the stupid blonde's comment. "For your information, I do have money." He grabbed a leather pouch, containing 20,000 yuls which the servant has saved over the years; One could say he was an impulsive buyer at times. Usually Samael had to talk Theo out of buying worthless items.
Are you really going to bet all that money because of your pride.
.. No.. Besides, I know I'll win.
"20,000 yuls. I'll win for sure."
"I don't know how you have all the money- for all I could know, it could be stolen money. But~! A bet is a bet. Something I can not back down from!"
"Uh.. You realized you initiated the bet right?"
Annoyingly enough, the noble ignored Theo's comment. "So, do we have a deal?"
"Yes."
The noble smirked before sticking his hand out. Theo hesitated before grasping his hand.
Theo grew nervous watching the epic battles play out between the nobles. Even a few commoners were extraordinary in their own battles; though there was one commoner who nearly killed his opponent. The creepy part was that he had this really insane smile that he kept the whole time. If it wasn't for his messed-up personality, Theo would have gladly make mischief with him, pulling pranks on people.
There was another interesting commoner with purple hair and who had really unique magic-wraith magic. To see the corpse attack was slightly intriguing and just freaky at the same time. The wraith-user looked to be older than most, maybe older than Theo himself.
When will we fight already?
The ravenette had already asked his opponent the same question twice but the noble just kept pushing it off.
"No, no, no. We have to wow them." The blonde held up a finger as he waged it around. "Besides, I can't lose my money again. I need some time to think-of course, I don't think you would understand."
Instead of getting angry, the commoner just dead-panned. Does he gamble a lot or something? He seems proud of it too...
Theo watched in disappointment as a commoner lost quickly to some cocky noble.
"All right. I'm ready."
The ravenette (A/n: yes, i know that's not really a word but whatever) grumbled in annoyance. "About time."
"Wait a second, we're the last ones to battle."
"Uh-huh! Everyone remembers the last battle, like their last bet, especially if it's exciting!"
Seriously, this noble...
"Before we fight, can I see your grimoire?"
The blonde noble gave me a weirded-out look before handing over his grimoire.
Theo grinned slightly, feeling the grimoire pulse under his hands. Now, his magic will be easier to control.
"Ah, I thought you had a four-leaf clover. Sorry!" Before the noble could question the commoner, Theo shoved the grimoire back into the the rightful owner.
Since Theo's magic: Manipulation magic was derived from memory magic and transformation magic, the more Theo knew about the person he was going to face off, the easier it was to manipulate or control the other person's magic. The way for the greatest amount of control was by knowing the opponent's fears and touching their grimoire or knowing their magic and to have a deep relationship (like friendship) with the opponent. His attacks would be more effective that way as it could transform into lies and deception.
I suppose this will have to do.
The two boys walked to different ends facing each other, waiting in growing anticipation
"3!"
Theo smirked, All I have do is attack first and then control his attacks and turn it against him.
"2!"
Both boys looked at each other, thinking the battle will be done within seconds.
"1!'
Theo and the noble held up their grimoires, ready to action.
"Fight!"
Immediately, the purple grimoire flipped open to a spell, tinged in a purple aura.
"Manipulation Creation Magic: Whip of False Judgement!"
Out from Theo's deep purple grimoire came out a long black whip with the three separate throngs and at the ends were small lead balls and sharp bones. The handle was violet with thin lines of silver. It had a special ability to give the opponent flashbacks of when they were cruel and falsely accused someone, if it could scratch the opponent. Unfortunately, it need a lot of mana from Theo to create his special whip. (A/N: I did base this weapon on the Roman whip called a flagrum, except with a few changes. Theo's is much longer than a Roman's)
From the balcony, the captains were looking at the battle, some in curiosity while others were disinterested.
"Hmm.. A commoner with such complex magic." The Gray Deer captain looked with interest at the simple-clothed boy.
"He is either smart or foolish to go against a noble." Captain Fuegoleon said.
"..." A certain pair of violet eyes stared at Theo.
Back to the battle, Theo grabbed the whip as he watched the other teen in front of him open his grimoire.
"Manipulation Magic: 39 Lashes!"
The commoner made an X with his long-distance weapon, his slashes growing quicker as it sped towards the blonde. Theo was irritated when the noble just smiled and took out a dice.
What's he supposed to do with that?
"Dice Magic: Gambler's Fallacy!" The noble even whooped when he rolled a 4. There was an irked mark seen on the commoner's face, especially when a magical blast counter his attack.
Dice magic, huh? I won't be able to control something unpredictable. UGH, could he be some fire mage or something? I miscalculated and now this battle won't be over quickly!
"Ah~I didn't think you be this tough. But it won't matter since I'll win the bet!"
Okay this man obviously gambles. Wait, isn't he under aged?
I don't understand humans. Placing their money on something unpredictable.
The ravenette grunted with some annoyance before placing his whip back into his grimoire and then turning to a different spell."Don't get cocky! It'll lead to your downfall! Manipulation Magic: Piercing Needles of Deception"
As Theo expected, the noble casts the same spell as before when the thin needles sped towards him.
He's only using the same spell as before and his blast was weaker this time when the dice landed on a three. Good thing, I have a spell that can control the slight movements of an attack. Over the years, I finally learned to give it some direction.
Sweat was building up on his forehead as the boy concentrated on preparing his mana to use two spells nearly at the same time.
"Looks like I'm getting some money today!"
This guy is really getting on my nerves.. Just concentrate, Theo. Just concentrate. At least we won't be in the same squad.
"Manipulation Magic: Piercing Needles of Deception!"
Just as the blonde noble's spell was going to counteract the magical needle spell, Theo quickly muttered under his breath focusing on the gambler, "Manipulation Magic: Subtle Shift."
Instead of the magical blast hitting the other spell, it shift direction to the spell caster, who looked with shocked from getting beat by a commoner and his own magic. Unfortunately, the needles which the ravenette summoned turned direction as well; It turned and sped towards Theo, who cancel his spell to avoid getting hit by a needle and crying from its effects and getting publicly humiliated.
The commoner smiled weakly. There was no doubt now. He definitely just drained his mana.
You did great, Theo! One day, you'll get really strong-and strategic- in battle. You also showed these nobles that a commoner can defeat their elites.
Haha, thanks Samael.
There was muttering and from the glares, the other noble examinees were not too excited that a noble just got beat by a commoner. Not just him, other strong commoners defeated some nobles too today.
Just as Theo was going to enter the crowd, he was startled by a voice.
"Hey, you."
The commoner twisted around to be face-to-face with the blonde noble he just defeated. He didn't seem to be angry, at least not in a serious way.. It was more in a joking manner.
"Uh… What do you want?" The ravenette scrunched his face, not much in the mood for talking.
The noble laughed at his expression. "You put up a fight. And unfortunately, all the money I bet, belongs to you. You won the bet after all!" He handed over a slightly heavy leather pouch. Theo stared at the noble, not really knowing what to think of him.
"I may be a gambler, but I'm an honest one." The commoner snorted at what he said, much to the noble's annoyance.
"Hey, what are you laughing at me for! I just gave you money and was friendly to you, despite being higher in status! Is that how you treat us nobles?" The blonde faked a gasp, being slightly dramatic.
Theo fixed himself. "Right. But you didn't have to give me the money."
"You're a commoner. You'll need that money more than I ever will. Just take it."
The ravenette dead-panned. He's trying to be charitable yet at the same time it's almost sounds like he's looking down on me.
You shouldn't have expected more. He's a noble.
At least some nobles are kind to the lower classes. A few even forsake their wealth to live out in the boonies.
That must be one in a million.
"-and just so we ever meet again, my name is David Swallow."
Oh shit. What was he talking about?
"Oh-uh, my name is Theo Kubo."
"See you around, Kubo." The blonde-er, David- waved before joining the crowd.
As soon as Theo entered the crowd, he was met with a scowling look from his Master, Langris Vaude. He was impatiently waiting, tapping his foot. There was a dark gloomy cloud hovering around the noble.
The boy tried to make his way over to Langris, but he was shoved around, getting farther away.
"The Magic Knights Entrance Exam is over. It is now time to decide on which squad you will be place in. When your number is called, please come forth. If any of the captains want you in their squad, they will raise their hand. If there is only one hand you will join that squad. If multiple hands are raised, you are allowed to chose which squad you would like to join. If no hands are raised, no squad has chosen you and you must leave." A voice said, their voice vibrating in the Magic Knights Exam Venue (A/N Just found out it had a name). Theo noticed it was the Captain of the Grey Deer. He gave up trying to get to Langris.
"Number 68!" A man called out. Theo assumed he was the same one who gave each examinee a number.
The teen looked in anticipation. Langris went forward out in the light, facing the captains.
Whichever squad he chooses, I must go… If we can get in the same squad.
He wasn't surprised when four captains raised their hands. It was the Silver Eagles, the Coral Peacocks, the Gray Deer, and finally the Golden Dawn.
Hey, is it bad that I want 'Gris to join the hot guy's squad.
No, since this is you we're talking about, I would say it's pretty normal. I just wonder why you're able to fall in love with people on the spot. I consider it one of your natural abilities.
Samael~! Theo was blushing hard at his friend's comment.
What? Don't you think its true. You've liked Finral and this Captain Vengeance on the spot. Maybe you like David and don't know it yet. I wonder who else? What about your master, Langris?
Nope! I cannot do this! Not right now.. Theo ignored his other soul and focused on Langris, who was thinking on his decision.
"Who will you choose?" The captain of the Coral Peacocks asked but there was no impatience laced in his tone.
"I will choose… The Golden Dawn."
Yes! He picked the hot man's squad!
Seriously, how did I end up with you?
Hey, you know we're an amazing duo. Or uno..? Since you know.. Two souls stuck in one body.
I suppose.
"Number 69, please come forward!"
Taking a deep breath, Theo stepped into the open space, facing the intimidating captains.
This is it…
Don't be nervous. I'm sure whatever squad you choose, we can continue our research.
The young commoner gasped when two captains raised their hands, especially when one of them was the captain of the Grey Deer. The same squad the Wizard King came from.
"No way!"
"But he's just a commoner!"
"He got lucky."
Theo ignored the other candidates who he presumed were jealous.
So.. The Grey Deer and the Blue Rose.
He stared at the blonde woman, Captain Charlotte of the Blue Rose Knights, with an unreadable expression.
Charla?
Who's that? Her name is Charlotte. Unless I´m wrong.
Charla..was my cousin. It can't be a coincidence that they have similar names and even look alike.
Are you sure? Samael was silent. Anyways, I have to get on the same squad as Langris.. But it seems like I failed.
"I would be honored to join.."
The ravenette's blue eyes widen when he saw another hand raised.
Captain Vengeance..
"I'm sorry, is it too late for me to raise my hand?"
Those violet eyes. His gentle voice. The rich politeness in his tone.
"N-no. I would be greatly honored to join…
…
..
..
..
...The Golden Dawn."
I wonder...why did he choose you last minute?
I don't know but at least I can be on the same squad as 'Gris.
Just don't get distracted. We need to keep working on our research.
Right. How can I forget?
Both Langris and Theo walked out the back entrance. The silence was almost unbearable between the two. There was a gloomy cloud around his master, which is the reason Theo decided to converse with Samael to avoid the awkward tension. But he can't avoid it or him forever.
"So… You must be proud to be apart of the Golden Dawn with your cool and amazing servant/friend."
The ravenette tried to be his casual-self, putting an arm around his short Master. He was only met with a glare and a sarcastic response.
"Yes, I'm so enthusiastic. But I bet you're way more excited that there are so many hot guys, right? Now, get your arm off me."
Theo gave a sheep-ish smile as he sweat-dropped at Langris words, fighting a blush that was creeping on his face. The servant removed his arm off of the runt's shoulder.
Why is he sour?
How oblivious can you be?
What do you mean?
HE'S JEALOUS!
J-jealous? Uh, I don't-
He. Is. Jealous.
"By any chance… Are you jealous, huh 'Gris?" Theo kept his playful tone, but really he was nervous to ask the question.
An unnoticeable blush was on the noble's face. "O-of course not! Wh-why would I be jealous? I'm-"
The commoner interrupted with a scoff, rolling his eyes. "-Nobility. Yeah, yeah."
The two walked down to the area Captain Vengeance instructed. Unknowing to him, Theo let out a dreamy sigh when he saw his masked captain. The gloomy cloud surrounded Langris again as he glared at the commoner's back.
"Hello, new members." Captain Vengeance smiled, not noticing the scowl coming from the noble behind Theo. "The last new member will be coming shortly."
No freaking way. He's on the same squad as me!?
The same blonde that Theo battled earlier smirked at his mouth-wide and shocked expression. "Hey, Kubo! Looks like we're on the same squad! Can you believe that?"
"D-David? You got into the Golden Dawn?!¨
¨Why do you sound so surprise?¨
Theo turned around, not wanting to answer the tall noble.
¨Hey! You didn't really think I wouldn't make it to such an elite squad.¨
The embarrassed boy coughed, covering his face in shame.
¨Uh-well-I knew you would get in a squad, just not...¨
David gasped at the revelation. ¨Why you-!¨
Captain Vengeance intervened, his cape swaying. ¨I've summoned a few brooms for you new members.¨ He handed each new member a beautiful and simple broom. There were about five members.
There's David. Langris. Me. Uhh-that um..horizontal challenged man, Hamon I think. He didn't really want to talk with me. Oh, and that green haired girl. She was strangely stoic.
¨This will be your means of transportation until you discover some other way to travel, either by your own magic or by magical items.¨
All of the members and the Captain sat on their brooms, using their mana to drive and steer it around. Captain Vengeance lead the newbies in front. Unfortunately, as Theo had low mana as a result of the battle and his other tests, he was trailing behind.
David flew around the straggling boy, making small talk, or more talking aloud as the commoner was focusing on steering his broom.
¨Where are you from?¨
¨From the town of Himura-¨ Theo said, instantly regretting his decision.
¨-What!? Are you a murderer in disguise? Have you seen an assassin?¨ The blonde noble gasped. ¨Have your parents been murdered. There´s a reason for its two infamous nickname, Blood-Bath village and Scarlet town.¨
¨No to the first question. I don´t know for the second. ¨ Theo paused, deciding how much to tell about his parents. ¨They have not been murdered by the townspeople.¨
David glanced over to the struggling dark boy next to him. ¨So… Have they been murdered.¨
When Theo didn't answer, the blonde dropped the question and moved on to a different subject. He was blabbering about how his gambling techniques were superb in nature, all the while, Theo was breathing hard, trying to concentrate.
¨So, how do you know Langris?¨ The blonde asked while hanging upside down from his broom.
The raven-haired boy gave a grunting, reminding David for what seemed to be the hundredth time, that he could give a ´yes´ or ´no´ answer.
¨Right. Right. I have to guess the right question to get the answer. Are you… I can´t believe I´m say this… friends with Langris?
The servant nearly fell off his broom, caught off guard by the question. He did not know how to answer the question. It was… a subject rarely discussed. After becoming a servant to Langris Vaude, Theo rarely saw the outside world or socialize with others (excluding the other servants and cooks). In truth, the two were friends but neither ever discussed if other members of nobility were allowed to know about their friendship.
Although… It seems he does not want anyone of high status to know and I have to respect that. Theo thought as he remembered his Master´s harsh words at the gate.
The Manipulation mage shook his head.
¨As I thought! I mean it´s obvious he looks down on people.¨ The gambling noble said in a whisper, careful not to attract attention from the spoiled noble who he was literally talking behind his back. ¨So how do you know him? I saw you two talking to each other before the Magic Knight Captains arrived.¨
Oh my goodness. How much longer? I think I´m going to pass out real soon.
¨Because,¨ The raven-haired mage panted with sweat dropping down his face. He blinked several times trying to get rid of the heaviness. ¨I'm his servant.¨
He then proceeded to fall off his broom, and in the air, passed out. From fear or exhausted, the reason was unknown.
There was a high-pitched whining that he could hear. A name called out. Limpness and dead weight. Was he flying? Or was he dying? His vision blurred mixed with beige, red, white, and blue. Violet eyes stared in deep worry. In a flash, his mind was consumed in an empty void of darkness.
(I have rarely passed out so sorry if it sucks.)
A groan escaped his lips. Even though his eyes were closed, he felt an annoying stab of pain directed at his eye sockets. Ugh.. My head hurts. It hurts to think. Straining his ears, Theo heard whispering near him.
¨-Thank you, Owen. I´ll visit later when he wakes up.¨
That voice! In an instant, Theo´s eyes flew open and blinked a few times to get rid of the blur. Captain Vengeance was talking to some old doctor-man with his back turned away from Theo´s medical bed. His call came out as a weak croak. ¨Captain..?¨
Both men turned to the patient.
¨Careful. ¨ The doctor-man said, who he assumed was the guy named Owen, as he examined Theo. ¨You passed out in mid-air and I assume your head hurts. Take this. It will help your body recover mana and stamina.¨
He handed a small vial with gooey white liquid with bubbles coming out.
¨What is this stuff?¨ As the tired boy drank from the strange liquid, nearly gagging from the vile aftertaste.
¨Trust me, boy. You do not want to know.¨ He took the vial away from the disgusted teen, who was trying not to puke right there and in front of his captain.
Captain.. Oh shoot I forgot he was here… and the fact I called for him like a desperate beggar.
¨What even happened after I passed out? ¨
Owen opened his mouth to answer, when Captain Vengeance spoke first, his eyes meeting a pair of blue. ¨I heard your name called, Theo, was it?¨ The teen nodded his head, listening to the masked man. ¨You were falling and I caught you, as the other members were unable to. ¨
¨So where are the others?¨
I can't believe it.
That you were caught by a handsome man?
NO! That my own captain had to save my pathetic ass.
Theo… Inwardly, Theo waited for a nice response. It was that or possible death.
¨I showed them to the Headquarters, don´t worry none are here.¨
¨Oh.¨ He tried to play it cool. ¨So… I became a damsel in distress, it seems.¨
A small smile tugged on his captain´s face as he crouched down to the boy's level. ¨It seems like your humor has not been damaged.¨
¨Yup...¨ Theo looked down at his sheets and unconsciously started to fiddle with it. "I'm sorry that I..." passed out because I'm weak? That's even more pathetic to say than in my head. ¨I´m not what you expected, right, Captain Vengeance? You can kick me out if you want. I won't put up a fight.¨
But Theo! What are doing?
Apologizing.
Silence.
Did he leave? I haven´t even been at the Golden Dawn base and now… I probably will have to leave already.
"Why would I give up on one of my own magic knights? Why I give up their potential to protect, defend, and attack for the Clover kingdom? You are a Magic Knight from the Golden Dawn who has the potential to grow. If I gave up on you for selfish reasons, I give up on giving the people of the Clover Kingdom a person of hope, someone to put their trust in."
Theo blinked. He blinked once more. No wonder many have wanted to join this man's squad. He really cares for his members. The commoner could not help but to stare in awe and admiration for his leader. ¨Does that mean..?¨
Captain Vengeance stood up from his crouched position and smiled. ¨Yes. But you need to recover a bit longer before you can come to base.¨
¨Th-thank you!¨
He and Owen greeted each other good-bye and that he would send my senior to come and show me around the base.
Theo watched as the captain´s mantle swayed with a vibrant color of red; his feather´d mask waved, almost in goodbye.
After an endless hour, just Theo sitting on his bed, recovering his strength and mana, there was a knock at the door.
¨Come in.¨ The commoner said, inwardly excited to meet his senior.
A tall man wearing the typical Golden Dawn uniform walked in the room; He had kind of spiky dark green neatly combed. But the first thing Theo noticed was the man was looking down on him already and it could not be for being a new member, not with such harsh grey eyes.
Man, I have a prick for a senior.
The ride to Golden Dawn headquarters was silent. Expect for the times his senior Alecdora Sandler threw insults at him on his posture, pace, and his status as a commoner.
Theo was ready to give him a piece of his mind, senior or not, until he saw the most amazing building come into view. It looked to be made out of gold with four mini guard towers in four corners of the building. His Senior Alecdora stopped in front of the golden-laid gate. He didn't even look back to face the commoner.
¨You are expected to know how to behave while in the Golden Dawn through this gate; You are only a newbie and a commoner at that. You must address everyone correctly, especially me. I don't expect you to be sent on a real mission, only to stand as guard in one of these towers. You should be thankful to the almighty Captain Vengeance that he would even consider keeping you even after your pathetic display of mana. I heard you passed out on the way to Head-Quarters, how shameful.¨
Jeez, can he stop yapping already?
Theo, are you even listening? Have you gone deaf? How pathetic.¨
"Yes, Senpai. " Theo was trying his best not to get riled up with his Senpai yet he wasn't looking forward to being berated.
After Theo was shown around by David (since his arrogant senior "had better business to attend to, not pathetic trash."), he found Langris waiting around his new room.
"You realize we're neighbors right?" Theo joked. Langris was allowed to have the room next to his servant, in case he needed something.
A smirk tugged at the runt´s lips. "Is that so?"
¨Pfft, yeah. You requested, so don't pretend you don't know what you´re talking about. Ah, whatever. Come in, ´Gris.¨
Theo grabbed the door´s handle and pushed it wide open. His jaw dropped at the sight of such an elegant room, definitely way better than the servants resting quarters at the House of Vaude. There was a simple yet stylish decorated bed and it was just right to Theo´s taste- a firm mattress. To the left of the bed was a small nightstand and it seemed to be made from dark mahogany wood, nicely sanded down and coated. On the right side of the room, the amazed commoner noticed a tall intricate mirror to the far corner; Just beside it, a grand dresser stood proudly made of fine dark wood with gold highlights. There was a simple work-space area complete with a study desk taking up the rest of the right side.
The boy from Himura town stepped in with his mouth wide open, Langris following behind, mysteriously proud. The floor was a plush velvet carpet all around.
"Whoa. This is-really strange."
Langris gave me an annoyed glance.
"A nice way to kill the mood, Theo." He huffed like he was utterly offended by Theo´s comment.
¨No need to be like that. What I'm-Oh my God. I have a balcony! Can you believe it, ´Gris!¨
The excited teen rushed down a skinny hall with a sliding door open at the end, passing a dark door (which he later figured out was the bathroom door).
The Manipulation mage yelled out, moving closer to the rails, admiring the view. ¨Heh, this is so sick!¨
Behind him, Langris smiled at his servant´s reaction. He had personally asked Captain Vengeance to arrange Theo´s room for clarity, or that is what he said. It's not like he's the world's best liar.
The golden sun set the sky ablaze with vibrant shades of fire; red to orange, orange to yellow. It dipped down between two silhouettes of mountains far from Golden Dawn Head-Quarters. Theo sighed in content though a look of nostalgia appeared. ¨He would have love this.¨
As soon as that statement slipped, Samael cursed while Theo panicked because his close friend's slip-up. Langris looked at him in suspicion.
¨Who would have love this?¨ An edge of jealousy trickled in his voice, thinking Theo meant one of his crushes. In reality, Samael had voiced his thought aloud when he thought of Patolli.
¨My...¨ Theo sucked in a breath, acting like he was bringing in a hard topic, when he really was trying to buy some time. ¨Father.¨
I mean, technically I am not lying. Father would have loved this.
Thank you. I am sorry, I did not mean to say anything out loud. I am truly sorry.
It's.. Fine.
Langris looked taken back. He definitely didn't expect that answer.
¨Can you leave me alone for a moment.¨
Theo gazed at the darkening sky. An unreadable expression was painted over.
And that scared Langris. He couldn't even read his friend and now, all he was doing was jumping to conclusions. "Yes. I will take my leave for the night. See you in the morning. I came to give you the Golden Dawn uniform, but I'll… just leave it on your bed. Good night, Theo." His footsteps receded into the back ground.
Theo stayed there, just staring at the sun disappear second by second, inviting the night. So many thoughts raced through his mind. Through their minds. Instead of the dark-hair boy laughing the night away, a long white-haired figure solemnly stared.
"Patolli. Licht. I will avenge your deaths and find a way for the elves to come back." The figure said, his voice a softer and deeper tone than his other soul.
I have to. It is my duty.
Several weeks have past since the Magic Knights Exam.
Theo was able to patch things up with Langris, and best yet-started to become friends with David and even the green haired girl whose name was Letoile. Although Langris seemed to be still slightly suspicious from Theo's night activities and mysterious disappearances, he was fine for now. His secret hasn't been exposed yet and Theo was going to work hard to keep it like that. His senior Alecdora was still a prick as usually and nothing was going to change that.
Theo was looking down from his balcony. David made the mistake for telling the commoner what level his room was and the fact it has a balcony, because he was in the works with planning a great prank.
Hmm, that must be it. He thought to himself as he spotted one balcony to the left of him with a table; the reason Theo knew it was David's room was because of the fact there were a set of die lying around plus his grimoire was just hanging off the edge of the round table.
He's probably out gambling. But why would he leave his grimoire? What a stupid mistake.
Theo threw down a rope and tied it to the edge of his balcony. He didn't have any spells to make him fly or move himself in the air, though that would be cool.
"Manipulation Magic: Simple Tracker"
Like the name suggests, Theo is able to sense or track other people's mana. This was one of the beginning signs to discovering what kind of magic he had. Strangely enough, there were traces of David's mana.
The Manipulation mage realized why the blonde noble left his grimoire and for the traces of David's mana. It was a trap; For the past few days, Theo has been pranking David non-stop, even during his guard duties. Just when he thought David was gone, the noble surprised his friend by popping in sight. He noticed the blonde held up a small gadget.
"Ha! You thought you could prank me again! For the record, Langris told me you were planning another prank. Man, I can't believe your own prank back-fired on you. Whoo~!" David laughed, much to Theo's annoyance.
"Okay. Okay, enough with the crappy laughing-No, don't interrupt me. You don't have my permission right now." The teen interjected when David opened his mouth to be dramatic. "What is that.. thing?"
His friend held up the small gadget. It was a black circular disk with a small button in the middle. "It's a simple mana blocker. These items are crazy expensive, of course not much of a problem for most nobles-"
"-Except you bet too much then lose all your daddy's money. Am I right?" Theo interrupted, but David stopped him from giving him a long lecture.
"Listen, when you press this button, your mana practically disappears and I can turn invisible! But it's powered by mana and you can only use it five times."
"So is it indestructible? Can I have it?"
David foolishly handed it over to Theo, thinking he would get it back.
This would be great for leaving unnoticed. Just needs some tweaking.
Yes, but how are you going to get David to let you to borrow it.
Don't worry. I have a plan.
Now, I'm worried.
The commoner pretend to examine it for a minute before extending his arm, facing towards the balcony.
"Hey. Hey! WHat are YOU doINg?!" David shouted as Theo flung the gadget off the balcony. David rushed to the edge of the rails, squinting for his new precious device.
There was no thud sound. No object could be seen. That was because Theo used his magic to manipulate it since it was a magic item so that it would float beneath David's balcony.
"What is wrong with you?! That mana blocker was new and the seller only had four of these. You owe me owe million yuls!"
The Manipulation mage winced at the amount. He was definitely going to be forced to use his savings from his weekly income.
At least I get money for being Langris' Personal Servant (LPS for short).
"Okay," Theo sighed. "You'll have it by the end of the week by midnight."
Then he turned around and started climbing back to his balcony. The commoner heard David's shout echoing through the night-"It's a bet!"
This noble… I can't believe he's my friend.
Theo gripped onto his rope and climbed over his rails, careful not to slip. He untied the rope with expertise and dropped it onto the grassy ground.
Man, this place is awesome. I love being a Magic Knight.
Looking up, the night shined brightly under the moonlight as the Moon herself replaced the Sun and lit up the dark sky. The stars danced across the sky, creating constellations. Pale white eyes, nearly matching the Moon's white beauty, stared at the glorious painting of night with distaste.
Humans should not be privilege to see such beauty.
A/N:
On that note, I have a bonus/petit clover (which is mostly canon to the story) at the end of this AN and the spells. I am going to be adding one small thing to first chapter, where Theo uses his magic to summon a wild Finral. I keep forgetting noble kids and probably commoner teens already have unnamed spells. So Theo would have been using a kind of simple tracking spell at the age of 14, which by the age of 16 is way more refined. That tracking spell could bring one person at the time close to Theo, especially if they had strong amounts of mana (like average nobility and royalty are easy to track compare to low mana peasants).I will add all of Theo's spells later (just wanted to get this chapter up after a long wait.) Reason for long wait: Family stuff and need to work on getting better grades.
Petit Clover- I am Not Jealous!
In a miniature Colosseum, all the mini-sized captains were seated in eight chairs overlooking the examinees.
Little Theo gazed in admiration towards the Golden Dawn captain. A heart appeared around his head and stars were in his eyes. In the crowd, a even smaller Langris huffed in annoyance.
His thoughts?
What's with Theo? No way. Is he ditching me for a captain?
At this, tiny Langris turned red and frantic.
A-ah. I don't like him li-like that. N-no! Am I-? No. Absolutely not. Theo. Is. My. Friend.
Then when Theo walked up to David for a challenge
'Gris watched from behind a pillar.
Is he flirting with him? No, Theo wouldn't betray me like that, would he?
But the next sight made Langris gasp. The two teens seemed to smile at each other and shook hands. In the tiny runt's mind, colorful pastel flowers fell from the sky, swirling around the two teens Langris was spying on.
Th-They just met and now-woah, already physical contact. Too SOON! N-no, Langris. You're just overthinking. I am not-
During his inner dialogue, a gloomy purple wisps formed around the mini Vaude. His opponent sweat-dropped and ran away from the glum spatial user.
I am not jealous. Chibi Langris glared at mini David and mini Theo's cute and flowery interaction; (although his glare in chibi form looked more like a cute kid trying to look upset and pout.) I am not jealous. Nope. I am not-what?! What am I saying!? I-I don't li-like that-that oblivious idiot who is way too tall and too funny and makes the best cherry tarts and-and-agh! WHy am I TrYIng tO ConVInCE mYsELf?!
The Ultimate Question: Is Langris Jealous?
(This part is slightly cannon to the story.)
The gloom wisp turned into a fat, thick cloud around tiny Langris as he walked with an awkward tiny Theo. The noble twitched when his servant started whistling.
UGH~ I AM JEALOUS!
"By any chance… Are you jealous, huh 'Gris?"
Now's your chance, the emotional part of Langris whispered into his head. "O-of course not! Wh-why would I be jealous? I'm not jealous."
NOOOOOOOO~! WHY DID I SAY THAT!?
Theo dead-panned as Langris started balling his eyes out and muttering under his breath and then rolling back forth on the floor. (This part is not canon to the story)
Spells in Theo's Grimoire (by the age of 16)
Ranked from first to recent
Manipulation Magic: Simple Tracker
- First spell without grimoire. A more refined version was inscribe in his grimoire. Simple version-Sensed only nobles and royalties, not commoners or outsiders or peasants.
-Theo can find people's locations by tracking down their mana and even bring them over to his location if he manipulates their mana (as learned by the age of 14). The more mana a person has, the easier it is to track their mana/location.
Manipulation Magic: Subtle Shift
-First spell Theo learned. Inscribed in his grimoire.
- A spell that repels magic in a slight and random direction. Over the years, Theo finally could repel any magic in any direction that he wanted. Disadvantage-his own spells will be affected, going in the reverse direction.
Manipulation Magic: Web of Lies
-Second spell in grimoire.
-A spell that can be used as defense or as a binding spell.
For Defense - webs from the ground surrounds the caster (Theo) in a ball of web. It can protect from any attacks as long as Theo is stronger than the opponent and/or the opposing magic attribute is an exception. (e.g - Spatial magic as it sends the webs away.)
For Binding - Prisoner is wrapped in a cocoon of webs. If they physically resist, the cocoon tightens. If they lie while in the cocoon, the cocoon glows deep purple and tightens.
Manipulation Magic: Piercing Needles of Deception
-Third spell in grimoire.
- Summons thin needle projectiles. If anyone is pricked by the needles, they are told lies/remember the times they were deceived or when they deceived someone.
Manipulation Magic: Rain of Deadly Arrows
- Fourth spell in grimoire
- Arrows rain down from above. It can follow the opponent only and only if they have been struck five times by the arrows.
Creation Spell(s) - Only 1
Manipulation Magic: Whip of False Judgement
- Fifth spell in grimoire. Only creation spell that Theo has. His magic is poor for creation magic.
- A Flagrum is summoned from Theo's grimoire. It has a short handle but there are about multiple throngs; pieces of bones and lead balls are attached to the ends of each throng. It had a special ability to give the opponent flashbacks of when they were cruel and falsely accused someone, if it could scratch the opponent. Unfortunately, it needs a lot of mana from Theo to create his special whip and continues to drain his mana as long as it is out of the grimoire.
Manipulation Magic: 39 Lashes
-This spell could only be used with Theo's Flagrum.
-Exactly 39 slashes are sent to the enemy in an X formation; Only spell (as of now) that can deal a major amount physical damage. No mental damage.
Word count- 13, 742 (more than double my first chapter.)
