As usual, I don't own undertale.
After the brief awkward silence that ensued, the two humans experimented with Frisks magic, other than the blasters and KARMA Frisk also had access to some gravity magic. Shortly afterwards, Frisk let their magic fade as the two of them went back inside. Chara and Frisk both enjoyed being around Toriel, but they both knew that this time of happiness would soon end. If they wanted to free the monsters, they would have to leave soon.
'Holy shit!' was the only thought in Chara's head as Toriel's magic flew past them at high speeds.
Chara could hear Frisk off to the side, saying something to Toriel, but their focus wasn't on the other human. It was on avoiding the absurd amount of fire being thrown in their direction, they didn't want to have to repair their jacket again dammit.
Chara knew that whatever Frisk was saying had to be working though, after all this wave of fire was a significant downgrade from the practical tsunami that it had been not even a minute ago. More proof of this was the fact that they didn't even need to dodge the next wave of fire. Clearly whatever Frisk had just said had gotten through to Toriel in some way, as the fire flowed along the walls of the area, coming nowhere near either of the two humans.
As the fire faded away completely, Chara bent over to catch their breath. They had just finished recovering, when Toriel walked out of the room, and Frisk walked over to them. "Come on Chara, we have to get going."
Chara took the other child's extended hand to pull themself of the floor, before following them out the door that led to the rest of the underground. As the two walked through the path out, they came across a patch of grass and dirt, which Frisk paused at for a moment before continuing on.
As they left the room, Chara couldn't help but ask, "What was with the patch of dirt?"
"Oh, that. In most timelines that's where flowey shows up to either berate me or be toxically sarcastic."
With that blunt statement, the two humans walked in silence for a few moments before Chara spoke up again, broaching a topic that had been on their mind. "So, why did Toriel insist on testing us when she knows that we're strong enough to protect ourselves."
Frisk froze in their tracks for a moment at the question, before they kept walking in silence for another moment. "Guilt." They respond, "Toriel feels extremely guilty for failing to protect the other children who fell, and for just running away from the issue originally while she was still buried in her grief."
That information killed any real desire that Chara had to keep the conversation going. The silence remained until the two finally got to the door out of the ruins. The two pushed open the door and stepped out into the snowy fields outside. Though, as soon as the two got past the doors, they slammed shut.
Frisk immediately started forwards on the path, Chara catching up a moment later.
As they walked, Chara found the silence on this path to be slightly eerie. They didn't know why though, the place wasn't all that different from the one in their timeline. Maybe it was just because it wasn't the one they were used to?
Chara was brought out of their thoughts by a loud sound coming from behind them. While they didn't turn around, they started to focus on anything that seemed out of place. As the two humans got closer to an overly large gate (Seriously, the bars on the thing were too wide to stop anything), Chara heard a loud crunching sound as someone started to walk up behind them. Chara heard them stop, and was about to try scaring the person behind them, before said person spoke up.
"HUMAN." Sans spoke in a different tone of voice, but it was still recognizable to Chara, "DON'T YOU KNOW HOW TO GREET A NEW PAL."
At this point Frisk couldn't hold in their giggles anymore, "But you're not a new pal sans," they get out between their giggles, "you're an old one."
"aw c'mon kid," the skeleton says in his regular voice, "you couldn't have played along a little longer?"
"We don't really need to stick to the script you know."
"well, despite everything, i think it still fits."
"What," Chara interrupts, "are you two talking about?"
Frisk blinks in surprise before seeming to come to a realization, "Oh right, you wouldn't know. Since most monsters can't remember things like sans can, Everything almost seems to work on a script, and usually sans and i keep to it."
They frown before amending that statement, "At least past versions of me did. The other Chara never really cared about that."
"welp, enough with the depressing stuff." Sans cut in before Chara could respond, "my bro will be by any moment now, and this we should probably keep to."
A moment later found Chara ducking behind a wooden table setup, while Frisk was hiding behind a strangely large lamp. Despite the uncomfortable position though, the interactions between the small skeleton and his brother entertained the crimson-eyed human. It reminded them of their interactions with Asriel.
Thinking of their brother caused their thoughts to run away, forcing the memory of their brother's death into their mind again. Even though they had done their best to avoid thinking about it, they knew that they would never see their brother again. Not only was there no way back to their own reality, but even if there was, Asriel was truly dead there, and nothing would change that.
"ok," sans' voice intruded on their spiralling thoughts, "you can come out now."
Chara and Frisk both came out of their hiding spaces, though Chara just started to lean on the counter they had been hiding behind.
"well kid," the skeleton said to Frisk, "you probably know where to go from here, so i'll see ya later." With his bit said, the skeleton walked off down the path towards the ruins. Disappearing in between one blink and the next.
Chara had barely gotten out from behind the wooden desk thing (sentry station, they vaguely remember Papyrus calling it), when Frisk started to drag them away.
"Come on," the more energetic human said, "we have to get going."
Where exactly are we going?" Chara asks as they pull themself out of Frisks hands.
"Don't worry Chara," Frisk replies in lieu of an actual answer, "this'll be fun!"
For some reason Chara had doubts about this statement.
Done this chapter finally.
I feel like the end feels a bit off, but I really needed to force past whatever was keeping me at that point, so apologies I guess?
Anyway, as usual, let me know if I got something horribly wrong, and let me know what you guys think.
Anywho, Read and Review.
