My Little Pony: Worker Birds

Chapter 6: Something Special

We work throughout the seasons, and we work on everything from houses to roads, to large office buildings to bridges. Now I have Gabby and Gilda not only working with me, but also living with me. With Gilda's hardworking attitude and Gabby's can-do spirit, I could not ask anyone better wearing hardhats and safety vests while on the big worksites.

I figured there would come a time that we would meet that sweet little colt Mint Chip one day. I don't think either me nor my crew expected it to be like this. It was one of those days in the workshop. Gabby was checking the engine while I was oiling the bearings on the turntable. Gilda inspected the tracks when a call rang, "I'll get it," I said to the crew,

"Hello, this is Golden Eagle Construction and Hauling, this is Heloise speaking,"

"Hello, Miss Heloise, this is Sweet Vanilla, and I'm Mint Chip's mother, today's my son's sixth birthday, we were supposed to have a birthday party today, but nopony showed up," she explained, my heart sank. I felt terrible for the little colt, "he's not taking it too well, so my son loves construction machines, and we're having a construction-themed party,"

"And I was wondering if you'd like to come over to our house for the party?" she asked,

"We'd love to," I replied, I wanted to make that little colt's birthday party one he will never forget. His mom said there would be ice cream cake at the party. It's been ages since I had ice cream cake, "alright, we'll be there as soon as we can," I said, hanging up the phone after a goodbye to his mom. I turned to my curious crew, "we're going to a party,"

"Really?! Oh! Oh! Oh! What kinda party?!" Gabby replied, ever so enthusiastically,

"Well, I got a call from Mint Chip's mother, she says that today's her son's birthday, and nopony showed up," I explained to my crew-birds, "so she asked us to come to his party as his friends," I saw a look in Gilda's eyes, a warm look. She looks like she hasn't had a lot of nice things in her life. If it's a little colt like Mint Chip, then we will make his party.

When we first started working on the 'projects', that was when we met Mint Chip for the first time. I could tell from the start that this is a colt that was raised well despite the tough upbringing of being poor in Equestria. Still, I wonder how such a thing happened to Mint Chip and Sweet Vanilla? Then again, it's not something I want to stick my beak in

"If we're going to a party, then we best look our best," said Gilda, with that we put on our best and cleanest plaid shirts, and safety vests. We cleaned up our helmets, and our dump trucks were going to be the first surprise of the little colt's party. They are nice, and clean and ready for the road. Once we were all ready, we headed over to the address.

The squeak sound of the brakes announced our arrival, "Now who's the lucky colt with a birthday?"

His eyes lit up like a Hearth's Warming Eve tree, "You came, you came to see me?!" he gasped

With a singing of 'Happy Birthday' to the cute little colt, the colt Mint Chip was turning six. We were so happy to make his birthday party. That ice cream cake was wonderful as was the soda pop. His mother was not the most wealthy of ponies, and neither are we. Still, she was able to get him a present. There was a huge book on earthmoving machines

It looks like something he will cherish, "Come with us, we saved the best for last," said Gabby

"Don't worry, momma, he's in good and safe talons," said Gilda, "now first thing's first, Mint Chip, you gotta wear your hardhat around here," she gave him a hardhat to wear, and followed us to the mighty cable shovel. There's happy as a colt in a candy store, and then there's this, "that's right, you get to operate the shovel, and fill up a dump truck,"

"I'll help you inside the cab of course, heh-heh," said Gilda scratching the side of her head. I lightly giggled as I went with Gabby to get the dump truck ready. Gilda hopped into the cab with Mint Chip in her lap. I could see from the windshield at the windshield of the cab that this colt is having the time of his life working at the controls of a really big toy.

The hardest time of the day is when it's time to go, "Hey now, don't be sad, buddy," said Gilda

"Because you know what? After today, you and your mom will have the greatest gift of them all," I said, gently stroking his milk chocolate brown mane. His brown eyes looked up at me, and my heart melted as he smiled to me. He's a good colt. As he looked at me and my best friends, he seemed to be questioning us on what the 'greatest gift' will be?

"You have us now, we'll always be your friends, Mint Chip, and to your mom," said Gabby, he cried as he hugged me first, and we gathered around him and his mom. Mint Chip is as soft and warm as his heart. From that day on, Mint Chip calls me and my friends the 'Pretty Birds'. Every time we go to work, we all think about that little colt and his mom.
