Chapter 8
Cammie led the charge to the empty table that was labeled 'Reserved'. All fifteen girls sat down, waiting to be dismissed to go to the buffet. Small talk began to emerge in between the groups of girls, while the majority of the hall, (Meaning all the of the boys), stayed silent. They weren't even bothering to stop staring, and most of them had eyes wide as dinner plates. Bex rolled her eyes and pulled Cammie, Macey, and Liz into a conversation about different outfit choices they could wear. The girls were dismissed first to go get dinner, and as they were walking, one idiotic Blackthorne boy made a choice comment about one of the seniors' body. In a split second, Cammie had suddenly appeared next to him, smiled sweetly, then punched him in the face, effectively knocking him out.
"Told you we wouldn't tolerate anything like that," Cammie said. She turned to look out at the still shell-shocked students. "Please take this as a reminder that we will not hesitate to knock you off your feet. Literally." And with that she continued on her way to grab dinner.
The girls loaded their trays, and headed back towards their table. Starting to eat, the girls brought up subjects they would most be interested in, with P&E, of Blackthorne's equivalent, at the top of the list. As Cammie was discussing some illegal moves with Bex, she felt a presence behind her.
"Mind if we sit here?" a deep voice asked, with a hint a sarcasm.
Cammie turned to look at the speaker, and was surprised to find it was the same boy she locked eyes with during her introduction. Getting a better look at him, she estimated he was about six feet tall, with dark hair and of course, bright green eyes. He was accompanied by three other Blackthorne students, all looking expectantly at her for an answer.
"Sure, just ask the rest of the girls to scoot over," Cammie said, coolly flipping her hair. She gave a subtle look to Bex, who caught on to what Cammie was hinting about. As Cammie started to move over, Bex sent a look to Macey and Liz, who passed it on to the other girls sitting at the table. The boys sat down, two on each side of the picnic bench tables. The dark haired one stuck his hand out, introducing himself as Zach Goode. Cammie shook it, with a silent smirk knowing that he was her target.
"I'm Cammie. It's nice to meet you," she finished, with a sweet smile. She shook his hand, and turned forward to look at the other three boys. One resembled a Greek god, and Cammie could tell his ego was probably sky high.
"My name is Grant Newman," the Greek god said, and also reached out to shake Cammie's hand.
"Well, you already know my name," she laughed, and shook his hand anyway. The other two boys introduced themselves as Preston Winters and Jonas Anderson. Jonas had black hair and glasses, while Preston was tall and had a nerdish aura around him. Cammie knew from Macey that Preston and her had already met each other during a political gathering for their fathers. After all, Senator McHenry was running as Preston Winter's dad's Vice President. Macey and Preston waved at each other, then continued on with their own conversations.
"So ladies, what are you most excited about to learn here?" Grant asked, leaning forward across the table.
"Well, we're kinda scared for P&E," Bex said, playing up her nervousness by biting a fingernail. Macey would kill her later for ruining her cuticles. She could just imagine the lecture she'd get.
"Yeah, it seems so frightening. We never did it at our school," Liz chimed in with a shaky voice.
"Well, don't you gals worry, us guys will help you learn everything" Zach said, casually sliding an arm around Cammie, which she shook off.
"Nice try buddy," Cammie said, rolling her eyes and looking at Macey, who looked at her with her eyes open. It looked like there were going to be two lectures tonight.
"I'm sure we'll pick up whatever moves we get shown, we're all pretty good at remembering things," Bex said, starting to look more confident about P&E. Cammie followed her lead, reassuringly rubbing Bex's shoulder.
"Are you sure we'll understand everything? I thought you guys were a higher level then us Gallagher Girls," Macey said, twirling her hair around her finger.
Grant looked at Macey and said, "You can do it, it just might take some practice." He went in for a high five, and Macey obliged. After that, the conversations petered out and everyone ate their food for awhile, and started up individual conversations with each other.
Macey and Preston started talking about their fathers' endless campaigns, and shy little Lizzie had pulled Jonas into a conversation regarding physics and atoms. Grant and Bex were enthusiastically talking about fighting, almost getting up to demonstrate their favorite moves. Cammie on the other hand had focused solely on her food, which wasn't as good as Chef's. Zach looked at her.
"Gallagher girl, why aren't you eating all your food?" he asked, seeming concerned.
"Gallagher girl?" Cammie asked skeptically. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Well, you're a girl, you go to Gallagher, I kinda just pieced the two together," Zach responded nonchalantly, shrugging his shoulders.
"I wonder how long that took," Cammie muttered to herself.
"What was that?" Zach asked, who had obviously heard her. This was a school for spies after all.
"Oh nothing," Cammie replied nonchalantly. "Don't you stress out your only two braincells trying to figure it out." She patted his shoulder.
He acted hurt, then quickly brushed it off. He turned to Grant instead to ask about homework, leaving Cammie to eat her dessert in peace.
Fifteen minutes passed, and dinner was finally over. The girls got up, getting ready to leave to go to their dorms.
"Whoa whoa whoa, can we take you girls to your rooms?" Grant asked, throwing a hopeful glance at Bex. Bex, obviously smitten, shook her head yes and started to lead out to the dorms. Macey grudgingly followed, with Preston trailing behind her. Cammie and Liz started walking as well, when they heard footsteps behind them.
"Were you trying to leave without me Gallagher Girl?" Zach asked. "That is just so hurtful," he said, pretending to wipe away tears.
"Oh get over yourself," Cammie laughed, pushing him. "I'm just trying to go back to my room."
"Well if you can't find it, I do actually go to school here. Did you not know that?" Zach said.
"No way! You? Go to Blackthorne? Never crossed my mind," Cammie replied, while trying to find the passage way from earlier. It guaranteed a fast escape. She spotted it, then pretended to trip on something. Macey, Bex and Liz all heard the thump Cammie made when she fell, and turned to look at her. They watched her as she blinked a message that read, 'Follow me'. They quickly nodded in response.
"It was soooo lovely to meet you all, but we really must be going," Cammie said, slowly inching towards the hidden lever in the wall. "And so, I must regretfully bid you adieu," she said, with a sad expression on her face. The minute she finished her sentence, she sprinted towards the lever, quickly opening it and closing as soon as each girl was in.
"I think that might have been our fastest time yet!" Liz said, doing the mental math in her head. The girls walked down the passageway, talking about dinner and what classes they all had together. Each girl who was part of the exchange had the same schedule, so they would be sharing classes. As they approached their dorms, they waved goodnight too all the others and headed to their own dorm.
Macey and Liz started to put on their pajamas, while Bex and Cammie brushed their teeth. They swapped, and did vice versa. As they got into their beds, the room was filled with chatter about the boys. Macey was interrogating Cammie about Zach, while the others watched in amusement. After that finished, Macey directed her attention onto Bex, grilling her about every little detail with Grant. Finally the interrogation was over, and the roommates started to drift to sleep, but not before setting their alarms for a bright and early wake up call.
"Goodnight guys, love you!" Macey said, and turned off the lights before a chorus of "love you too!" rang throughout the room.
