Chapter 11
Cammie looked around in shock, her eyes locking onto the bloodied boy in front of her. He seemed somewhat familiar, but she couldn't place where she had seen his face before. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she ran in the direction that Zach headed in. She could see him a couple feet away from her, so she called out his name trying to get his attention.
"ZACH!" She yelled, trying to catch him. He turned to look at her, lifting his non-bleeding arm up to wave. Cammie caught up to him, immediately noticing his bleeding knuckles. "Zach, what did you do?" she asked, gingerly lifting his hand up to inspect it. "Let's go clean it up, and while I clean, you can explain to me exactly what you did," Cammie said, looking at him straight in the eyes when she said the last part. Zach rolled his eyes but let her walk him to a nearby bathroom. Cammie started to gently wash off the blood with cold water and some paper towels. She reached into her bag and pulled out some rubbing alcohol, which was great for disinfecting. "What are you looking at? Always be prepared," she said when she saw Zach's facial expression.
"Why would I carry that around though?" he asked. Cammie just looked at him, and he got the message. 'For times like these', her face seemed to read. She motioned for him to start talking about this fight, and he sighed reluctantly but began to talk. "I was getting changed in the locker room after p&e and I heard one of the guys talking about a girl. But I couldn't hear a name yet, so I stayed back to try and figure out who it was. The guy was making a bunch of comments about her body, and how he could get her to give it up for him in about a week. That made me just feel gross, so I went to look who it was and it was a newer recruit. I had never seen him before though. I started to ask him a few questions as we were walking out of the locker room, and it turns out he was talking about you." At this, Cammie's face dropped, and she stopped cleaning his hand for a second.
"Well, thank you for doing all that, but that doesn't justify a fight. I could have fought him off instead," Cammie answered, returning back to drying his hand.
"I know, but I'm not done telling the story yet. He made a few more comments about your body, and I just lost it. No one should be talked about like that, and it was really disgusting Cam. Like really horrible. I'm sorry, I should have brought it up to you first but I just couldn't help it," he finished. With his free hand he wiped at his eyes and took a deep breath to calm down.
"Thank you Zach. That means a lot to me that you would do something like that," Cammie said, and finished bandaging up his hand. "You know, I just might end up calling you my knight in shining armor," she added, and reached up on her tip toes to kiss him on the cheek. She smiled at him, then walked out of the bathroom, leaving Zach looking after her and lightly touching the spot where her soft lips met his face.
Cammie met back up with her friends at lunch after leaving the bathroom. Nearly everyone was already eating, so Cammie just went to their table and sat down, grabbing an apple from Bex's tray.
"Where were you?" Macey asked, looking at Cammie. "Lunch started 10 minutes ago and we all know how much you love your food."
"I was cleaning up Zach's hand for him in the bathroom. He really did some damage on the other guy, because his knuckles were bleeding pretty bad," Cammie replied. "Does anyone know who the other guy was? Or is he just the mystery according to everyone?"
"Before I answer that question, you and Zach were together? Just now? And you didn't think to mention it to me?" Macey asked, looking shocked. "What were you doing? I promise I won't tell," she said, winking after the last part.
"Ewwww Macey we were not doing anything. He was telling me why he fought the other guy, and it was actually kind of sweet. Apparently the mystery dude was making comments about my body and saying really gross things about me, so he started asking questions to figure out who the guy was talking about. When he found out it was me, he lost it and started to fight. Zach said his reasoning behind it was that no one should be talked about like that, which I totally understand. So I finished bandaging up his hand and I said thank you."
"And? That was it? No hug or kiss or anything?" Bex asked. "Come on Cam, the dude fights someone for you and you don't do anything?"
"Well I did give him a kiss on the cheek after," Cammie said, and rubbed the back of her neck.
"Ooooo Cammie, we knew you liked him! The odds were so in your favor," Liz added, smiling at Cammie. Cammie rolled her eyes but let a smile slip out.
"Does this mean you finally think we were right Cam? That you do actually have a secret admirer and it's him?" Macey said, calmly eating the last of her salad.
"Ugh. I guess so," Cammie said, defeated. "But that doesn't mean I like him back yet!"
"YET!" The other three girls yelled back at her. Cammie threw a piece of her apple at them.
The girls finished lunch and were throwing away their trays when another boy stopped them.
"Cammie?" the voice asked. "Is that you?"
Cammie froze, then looked over her shoulder at the speaker. It was then that the face clicked in her memory. Sure, he had gotten a year older, and he grew a little taller, but she would always recognize him. The boy from the fight? He was actually Dillon Jones. Josh's best friend. But how could he be here? He wasn't a spy, or anything near it when she had first met him. He just wanted to moon the 'fancy rich girls' and vandalize the school grounds.
