Chapter 13

A few hours passed by, each person focused on their own task. Liz and Jonas had powered through pages and pages of code and typing to find information. The other four had moved to the little sitting area in the room, talking and laughing together. Preston had enough courage in him to throw an arm around Macey, and she surprisingly didn't throw it off the second he put it on. They all left Zach and Cammie alone though, seeing as one was sleeping peacefully and the other was in his own world. Every 10 minutes or so, Bex or Macey would look over to make sure Zach wasn't trying anything. You can trust someone, but only to a certain extent. Especially if that person is another spy. Even more so if that person is a Blackthorne Boy. But they had nothing to worry about, seeing as the only touching going on was Zach messing with her hair. After 3 hours, Jonas and Liz had gotten enough information about Dillon to create a profile. They finished typing up the list and saved it just in case it would ever be needed again. Jonas waved everyone over and motioned for Zach to wake Cammie up. He gently shook her, and when she didn't respond, he whispered into her ear. She slowly sat up after, trying to regain her senses. Zach looked at her, taking his finger and carefully wiping the sleep away from her eyes. Both turned to look at the two geniuses seated in front of them, and waited attentively.

"Okay, so given what we know about Dillon, we were able to hack in and look at his recruiting form, courtesy of Blackthorne Institute. It turns out that he wasn't lying, he truly was recruited, but again has no connections in the spy world or in the government. That's where Liz and I hit a wall, until we broke through." He high-fived Liz and smiled. "We found out about one of his uncles, a man by the name of Cole Jones. From what we can tell, not much is known about the uncle in question. Following that trail, we discovered that Cole had connections to the Circle of Cavan. We know that the Circle of Cavan is a terrorist organization, and if Dillon's uncle is in it, then Dillon could be a spy for the other side," Jonas said. He flipped the computer around so that everyone could take a look at Dillon's profile. One thing was wrong. Zach had gotten extremely tense around the mentioning of the Circle of Cavan, for reasons unknown. The girls had also observed glances thrown at Zach while Jonas talked about the COC. Not much information was given about it either, it seemed to be a touchy subject around Blackthorne. Zach slowly got up, moving Cammie's blanket back on top of her.

"I have to go to the bathroom, I'll be back in a few," Zach said, and rushed out of the room. Cammie looked after him, wondering if she should try and catch up to him to see what was wrong.

"Give him a few minutes Cam. Then go after him. I think he might just need a second," Grant said, walking over to ruffle Cammie's hair. She punched him in the gut, causing him to fold. "Jeez girl, there was no reason to do that," Grant wheezed. Cammie shrugged.

"You messed up my hair Granty. That is inexcusable," she said, and laughed. "Bex come get your boyfriend, i think he needs help."

Bex's face flushed red, but she walked over with some ice for his stomach. While she was bending down to give him the ice, (Grant had gone into the fetal position, he was such a drama queen) Cammie saw his lips move to ask her a question. When Bex stood back up, she was smiling so hard it looked a little bit crazed. Cammie shot her a questioning glance, then heard a squeal come from Macey. That's when the two girls, Liz and Cammie, simultaneously realized that grant had finally asked Bex to be his girlfriend. Similar screams escaped their mouths, and they rushed over to hug her, ignoring Grant who was still curled up on the floor. He made a shocked expression, and when everyone looked back down at him with disappointment in their eyes, he finally unrolled and stood back up. He walked with a limp, although he was never even hit on his leg. After congratulating Bex, Cammie motioned that she was going to go find Zach. She walked out of the passageway, looking around the halls. Following the path to the bathroom, she looked for clues to Zach's disappearance. A couple feet away from the bathroom door, she spotted a disturbance in the dust around a light fixture. Pulling on it, it opened up into a second hidden passage. Cammie shut the door quietly, and began to walk down the hallway, tracking Zach's footprints. They led all the way to a solitary room with a single couch, another hidden room on the campus. Zach was lying down on the couch, his head in his hands. Cammie walked up to him and sat down close.

"You know, this doesn't look like a bathroom," she said, and got a muffled laugh out of Zach. "Is everything okay? You left rather quickly. Is it something to do with the Circle?" Cammie asked. Again at the mention of the Circle, Zach tensed up, this time clenching his fist. He just so happened to clench his still scabbed one from his fight with Dillon, reopening the scabs from the small cuts. Cammie reached over to take his hand, her smaller hands covered by his big hand, and started to slowly unclench it. She brought out some tissues from her back pocket, and began cleaning up the blood that started to trickle down his fingers. He took a deep breath when she had to scrub particularly hard at one scab.

"So are you gonna tell me why you left?" Cammie asked as she brought out some bandaids. The butterfly bandaids were almost all done being placed when he began to talk.

"The Circle of Cavan brought up a lot of bad memories for me. Promise me you won't think differently of me if I tell you everything?" he asked, turning to look at Cammie. Cammie held up her pinky and said,

"Pinky promise." They interlocked pinkies and smiled.

"I grew up around the Circle. My mom is a leader of a splinter group. She's the reason that the Circle hasn't come after me. It's her 'protection' that keeps me safe. I don't know much about what she does, I've tried to distance myself as far as I possibly can, but now with Dillon here, I think she might have an ulterior motive. And the fact that he arrived only a few days after you girls? Something doesn't seem right and I don't want you to get hurt," he said.

He started to tear up again. The stress carrying this around seemed so heavy. Cammie took his face in her hands and wiped his tears off with her thumbs. She looked at him for a second, then wrapped her arms around him. He pulled her into his lap, and his arms weaved around her waist.

"I could never think any different of you Zach. You are a good person who had bad things around them. It's not your fault that she turned out like that. But you have to remember. You aren't her. You're Zach. A good guy. Don't forget that, okay?" Cammie whispered into his ear. He nodded his head against her neck. She rubbed his back as she felt more tears fall from his face onto her shirt. The two sat there for awhile, hugging in the comfortable silence that took over the room.
