Chapter 16
Cammie smacked her forehead hard. Of course he would say it's a date, even if it wasn't. Unless of course, Cammie wanted it to be like a date. And maybe she did, I mean she did like him, and it sure seemed like he returned those feelings. He was always touchy with her, and always had an arm around her or a hand touching her shoulder. So, he could in fact like her back, but it seemed a bit much after Josh. Especially since Dillon went to Blackthorne. Even more so because Dillon could be a possible spy for the Circle of Cavan. But nevertheless, the heart wants what it wants. And Cammie's really wanted Zach. Shaking her head, she walked to the locker room and quickly got changed. It was time for lunch, and Cammie needed to find her friends and tell them the news. She nearly broke into a run down the hallways, tying her hair up as she went. She finally spotted Macey's jet black hair, thankfully not near any of the boys. Cammie rushed towards the other three, desperate to tell them her news. Bex spotted her first, and waved her over with an oblivious look to Cammie's stressed face.
"Cam, what's wrong, it looks like you've seen a ghost," Bex said with a worried expression. Cammie quickly placed a piece of her hair behind her ear, and took a deep breath.
"I think I just got asked out. On a date," Cammie said, wringing her hands. Jaws dropped. Macey let out an incoherent noise, and Bex just stood there. Liz however gave Cammie a hug with a smile.
"Aw, congrats Cam! Who's the lucky guy?" Liz asked.
"Well, it's, I mean do I really have to say it?" Cammie asked, looking around to check if people were listening. Not that it did much good seeing how Zach had yelled over a bunch of students about a date. It was done anyway out of habit.
"Yes you have to say it, the boys here are all over us and it's hard to remember who's who," Macey said in response. She smirked, already giving away the fact that she knew who asked Cammie.
"Fine, it's-" Cammie's sentence got cut off when a unknown body wrapped its arms around her waist, and placed their head in the space between her neck and head. "Zach!" she exclaimed. The girls all looked at her, and then at each other, confirming the fact that it was Zach who asked her. "What are you doing?" she asked.
"I just wanted to come hang out with you guys. Am I not allowed to do that anymore? I thought the point of the exchange was too become friends with our possible coworkers," he said slyly, a smirk appearing on his face. They all rolled their eyes.
"Yeah that was one reason, but I don't think the other was to squeeze the life out of the actual participants. I actually think that's called murder," Cammie said, with a small laugh at the end. She felt Zach's body shake behind her, signaling he was laughing as well. "Can we sit down now? I'm hungry," she said grabbing a tray of food with Zach still connected.
Waiting in line for the chef to put food on her and Zach's trays, she saw in the reflection of the silverware someone looking at her. Taking a closer look, while making it seem like she was leaning into Zach, Cammie spotted Dillon, staring straight at her. He didn't even make an attempt to hide it, like any trained spy would. But then again, he wasn't a trained spy. To Cammie, he would always be Josh's troublemaker best friend. Zach had noticed her standing still for awhile, and nudged his head into her neck to garner her attention. She looked down at him.
"What are you staring at Gallagher Girl?" he asked.
"Just Dillon. He's been looking at me the past five minutes, and I'm not quite sure what to think," Cammie mused. Zach let out a huff.
"He better not be staring at my girl," Zach said, anger seeping into his voice. He squeezed her waist a little tighter, his protective side coming out. Cammie went stiff, the words 'my girl' pretty much being the only words she heard.
"You alright Cam? You're very tense," Zach whispered. "Want me to beat him up? Again?" She laughed.
"Nope, just waiting for you to start moving so that I can get these trays to the table," she said, covering up her true intentions.
Cammie felt him nod, and then move to stand up. Before he stood up all the way, he pressed a light kiss to the underside of her jaw. Grabbing a tray, he started to walk across the hall to their table, but paused to drag Cammie along with him, who had stood there for a second after his kiss. She shook herself out of it and grabbed his hand, walking to the table. When they sat down, she felt a questioning glance from Macey, and mouthed that she would talk to her later. Starting to dig in, she paused yet again when she felt a warm hand on her leg, and looked up to see Zach talking nonchalantly to Grant, one hand on his drink and the other on her thigh. Cammie flushed a bit, then redirected her attention to her food and friends. The rest of lunch was filled with complaints about teachers and talk about the town day. The town in question was Boothbay Harbor, a small seaside town. The thought that the school might be situated near the ocean didn't fly past the girls, who were used to being far away from the ocean. Boothbay Harbor seemed like a quaint area to explore and experience, according to research Liz later found. Even though it was nearing December, Macey had still packed swimsuits, in case of a pool. In the girls' town bags, she had placed said swimsuits in case a swim hangout was proposed. Once all of their classes were over, the girls headed back into the room to do one final check on their bags, which were prepared for the town trip that took place tomorrow. Cammie looked through her small backpack, taking out a little towel, sunscreen, lip gloss and chapstick, a knitted scarf from one of Liz's sisters, a small zip bag containing extra makeup, and another bag that had cash in it in case of emergencies. At the very bottom lay the swimsuit. Cammie had let Macey pick it out, and Macey sometimes wasn't the best source for appropriate clothing. This was a prime example of that. Macey had given Cammie a bright red bikini, which looked as though it was extra cheeky and had a minuscule triangle top.
"MACEY!" Cammie yelled. Macey rushed in the room, and open noticing the bikini, smiled.
"Do you like it? I think the red would look stunning on you," she said, choosing to ignore the expression on Cam's face.
"Macey! It doesn't cover anything at all! When and why would I wear this?" she asked, a shocked expression displayed on her features.
"I know! That's the point! You wear it when you're swimming, because you can't wear pants. Duh," Macey said, starting to laugh. "Cam, will you just trust me? It will look so good on you, and the top stretches. It's not as small as it looks."
"Well I'm not sure about that, because it looks pretty dang small," Cammie said, looking at the swimsuit in comparison to her body in the mirror. "Why do I ever let you shop for me?" she groaned.
"Because I have good taste, and because you can't sit still for more than five minutes at a time. Cam, don't be too worried, it's just there in case we decide to swim. And since it's winter, I highly doubt that you're going to go swimming. No matter how much Zach would do to see you in that," she smirked. Cammie threw the swimsuit at her. Macey threw it right back. Cammie's shoulders dropped, realizing that Macey would never give up. She accepted defeat, and put the swimsuit back in the bag along with the rest of the items. The girls sat at their desks, finishing their assigned work, singing along to the songs Liz put on. When it reached dinner, they quickly ate and left, starting to get ready for the town day. Face and hair masks were applied, nails were painted, and body parts were waxed. (Surprisingly, Bex was the one who complained the most about the wax. Who would have thought?) Eyebrows were done expertly by Macey, moisturizers applied, and Liz even braided hair for everyone. She was amazing at it, thanks to her little sister. For fun, they would practice different braids and hairstyles on each other. Liz did a simple Dutch braid on everyone, which would curl and wave their hair for the following day. Macey made everyone double check their bags, making sure that all the essentials were packed away. She looked through Cammie's bag herself, checking that the red swim suit, or 'death suit', as Cam put it, was still there. After double checking, they all sat on Liz's bed and turned on a movie to watch together. Around 1 am, Bex started to nod off, quickly followed by Macey and Liz. Cammie turned off the movie, and tucked everyone into the blankets on Liz's bed. She then got in herself, turning off the twinkle lights Bex had hung up the previous day. Snuggling next to her best friends, Cammie was so thankful that she went to Gallagher.
