CHAPTER ONE

Unaligned World of Mission: Impossible

Seattle, Washington

A Food Stand on the Seattle Waterfront

"You actually said that. Out loud," Luther Stickell said before slamming a fist onto the table he and the man sat at. "'Mission accomplished.'" "I said it," the man said. "You're still corny, Ethan," Luther said. "I can't imagine the look on that guy's face."

Ethan Hunt smiled then took a sip from the bottle of beer in his hand. "Hey," a voice from behind Ethan said. Ethan turned his head and saw teammates William Brandt, Benji Dunn and Jane Carter. "This must be them," Luther said.

"Luther Stickell, the firm of Carter, Dunn and Brandt," Ethan said, gesturing to each agent in turn. Luther cocked an eyebrow at Jane, Benji and Brandt. "I blew an entire weekend on the bottom of the San Francisco Bay, no thanks to you clowns," Luther said. He still saluted the three agents with his bottle of beer.

Luther then stood up from the table and began to rummage through the pockets of his coat for some money. "No, man, you know I got this," Ethan said. "I know," Luther said before putting some change on the table and fist-bumping Ethan. "I'll see you in Kandahar."

Luther walked away from the table. Once out of eye- and earshot of Ethan, Jane, Benji and Brandt, Luther turned around and watched as the four agents discussed their most recent mission.

Luther watched as Ethan reached into his pocket and withdrew three smartphones, which Ethan laid on the table. "Your missions," Ethan said in explaining the phones' meaning. "Choose to accept them."

Benji and Jane picked up their phones and left the table. Brandt, however, stood to leave without picking up his phone. After Ethan reassured Brandt that the "failure" of a previous mission was all a part of the plan related to their most recent mission, Brandt shook Ethan's hand and picked up the phone.

After seeing his wife Julia (who he had to make think he was dead) from afar, Ethan connected a pair of earbuds to a fourth smartphone and accessed a certain file.

"Good evening, Mr. Hunt," the voice on the recording said. "As you may or may not be aware, for the last six years, we of the Impossible Missions Force have been in a technology- and intelligence-sharing agreement with a paramilitary organization from another dimension known as the Scarlett Army."

Ethan knew of the Scarlett Army, as Luther had told him of the Army based on past interactions he had with them. "The Scarlett Army primarily defends the various dimensions in this universe from an organization known as the Army of Inter-Universal Chaos," the voice continued. "This leads to the reason for this message."

Ethan tensed, waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop. "36 hours ago, there was a breach in our military's communication network," the voice said. "Many in the U.S. government believe that an emerging terror organization known as The Syndicate now has control of our entire drone fleet. Their targets, supposedly, are unknown. However, the tools purportedly used for the hack by The Syndicate carry an A.I.C. signature. This indicates one of two things: that The Syndicate is working for the A.I.C.; or that The Syndicate is the A.I.C."

Then, the words Ethan had been expecting came: "Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to determine the extent of The Syndicate and/or the A.I.C.'s involvement in this situation and deal with it as best you can," the voice continued. "As always, should you or any member of your I.M.F. team are caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions. This message will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Ethan."

Ethan disconnected his earphones and placed the smartphone in a nearby trash can before walking away. The phone was covered in smoke as the message's self-destruct did its job.

As this happened, Luther watched and smiled to himself. "We'll be seeing each other again soon, old friend, but not in Kandahar," he said. A female voice spoke from behind Luther. "Are you ready, Luther?" it said.

Luther turned around and saw Jane, a fellow member of the King's Hand. "I am indeed, Fairy Goddaughter," Luther said.

Jane rolled her eyes at Luther's nickname for her (being the daughter of the Fairy Godmother as she was) then activated her Scarlett Army communicator. "Jane to Gavan's Glory II. Two to beam up," Jane said.

Jane and Luther dissolved in Gavan's Glory II's transporter.
