The day she had to break such heart wrenching news, disrupting the innocent of her world was gut wrenching for sure. But the events and days that transpired leading up to that moment were worse.
It was a Friday. She'd gotten off of work early and headed home to Fitz, for their weekend together. It was supposed to be a family night of movies and pizza followed by an arts and crafts Saturday and bowling Sunday.
However, those plans came to an end after one phone call from Huck Friday evening. When she got his call; she knew it wasn't going to be about something pleasant, but she certainly didn't expect what she heard.
When he called, his voice was controlled and eerily calm. Something she noted from the start. He told her that he'd completed the inquiry into Cyrus, and found out the answers to a lot of questions regarding Cy's behavior over the years, as well as the reason for his recent change in behavior at work.
Wanting to know the gist of what happened, and cutting to the chase. She flatly asked him what he found out. He paused at first, and thought about the sensitivity of the situation, trying to preserve her feelings.
But, she wouldn't relent. Instead, she pushed him hard, And with Quinn by his side, as he delivered the first part of the bad news he discovered, with her consent and guidance to disclose it so blatantly.
He gave her the information in sheer Huck form, as he said, "Cyrus knew your father was going to kill Jerry before he did it. And, did nothing to stop him." Her heart almost stopped when she heard him. Her mind scrambled to make sense of it.
After several seconds, her mind finally settled on the events leading up to reelection night. What was the state of affairs at the time Fitz was running for reelection?
It then comes to her as she replays the most hectic events in her head, like they were on a digital recorder. They'd just found out that Mellie had relations with Big Jerry, which called Jerry's paternity into question.
Yet, the results showed Jerry was in fact Fitz's son. And, the affair between Mellie and Andrew had been discovered, with Karen walking in on her servicing him.
All while she and Fitz's romantic involvement being the worst kept secret in the Whitehouse, and both Jerry and Karen becoming wise to that too. As well as both Karen and Jerry adding drama of their own to the mix. With it being discovered moments before a live, family interview, he was behind a website that openly attacked the administration, and Fitz, directly. And news of Karen's affinity for underage sex and drinking was also discovered.
Olivia shakes her head as she thinks of how chaotic and stressful that period was for everyone. Living in that moment felt like an explosion was imminent. Nobody had any idea how much more they could take, or keep within the Whitehouse, but it felt like they were certainly testing the limits.
In the end, she rose to the occasion fixing it all, and saving the day. But, she was emotionally and mentally exhausted, and was left in thought and unsure. She didn't know any more if it was all worth it. She did her job, and all was well. But, inside. She was unsettled and unhappy. And for the first time she felt like maybe. The happy she needed was without him by her side. Not because she was afraid to be with him.
But, because she just didn't know anymore, if all that had been created, due to their choice to be together was doing anybody any good, even them. Were they really happy, or were they forcing it, so it made sense given all that had happened? It was a question that made her think, and she couldn't answer it. But, she knew she needed to find the answer so her spirit could be at rest.
Which was why she found herself needing to tell him what was on her mind. She couldn't avoid it any further, it was time, and it was necessary; regardless of a national presidential election looming.
Because they've never been accused of handling things at the right time though. Her need to disclose how she was feeling, was no different. They ended up having a conversation just before the last rally of the election cycle.
And, admittedly, she didn't expect it to go as well as it did. So many times he'd been against anything that would pull them a part. But, he listened to her and heard her out, and when she finished. He surprised her by saying, he understood.
He actually understood her concerns and her position. And, whatever she wanted to do, he was willing to let her do it. As long as it made her happy. He told her that her genuine happiness is his priority.
And over the last few weeks up to that point. He recognized that he'd done a terrible job of understanding the position she was in, just by being with him. He admitted, seeing Mellie with Andrew. Gave him a shock to the system that helped him see just how painful it has been for her all these years, to see him and Mellie together.
Even if it wasn't in a sexual or meaningful way. He then apologized to her, for being so inconsiderate toward her, and taking her for granted at all, let alone for as long as he had. He closed by saying if anyone deserved to take a moment to figure something out, it was her.
His kind words touched her deeply, and she cried tears of sadness and also tears of appreciation. He held her lovingly as she sobbed, until she was settled. And when she was done she felt an unbelievable sense of peace and fearlessness.
Somehow, they had an adult conversation, and came to a conclusion without bitterness, or anger at the end of it. That was surely a rare occurrence for them, neither one of them were accustomed to. But, they both realized was a very positive move in a healthy direction.
Before speaking to him, she wasn't certain what she needed. But after they talked; she comfortably decided she needed time, and space to think. A break from all that was going on, once the election was over, win or lose. And, he supported her decision.
They both left the conversation in a great place emotionally and mentally. Because since meeting one another, and becoming intimate. They were both genuinely happy as individuals, and not looking to one another to make each other happy. They were willingly finding out and figuring out what happiness meant independent of one another.
This new approach was like finding a light at the end of the tunnel for them, and for the future, whether he won the election or not, and whether they were a couple at the end of it or not. And, they both took pride in knowing this would be an election he won based on his merit. No tricks or thievery.
