chapter 10 Going through a phase
School had just let out for the summer. "Alright no more pencils, no more books, no more teachers dirty looks," James said.
"Summer vacation at last," Hannah said.
"Yes and I am so looking forward to having a good time," Jubilee said.
"Hannah you still up for a movie tonight?" Warren asked.
"You bet," Hannah said. "Now that I work AMC dine in at a local mall I get 2 free movie tickets and a discount on food and drinks," she said.
"When do you start working there?" Warren asked.
"A week from Friday and I got my employee benefits now," Hannah said.
"Yes I have them too I got summer job there too remember?" Warren said.
"Oh yes I remember," Hannah said.
"Yes dad is glad I got my first ever job he said working over the summer will help me give a sense of accomplishment and pride and help me learn the value of a dollar and learn how hard work can be rewarding," Warren said. "He said even though the position I got doesn't get much pay it will still help me learn," he said.
"That's what my dad said too," Hannah said.
"What position you two have?" Todd asked.
"Waitress," Hannah said.
"Waiter," Warren said.
"That's kind of cool," Todd said. "Doesn't pay much I bet," he said.
"No, but at least it gives me some work experience until I find another job next summer." Hannah said.
Things were starting to go smoothly until something happened. Cerebros detected a mutant signature. It was coming from somewhere in the city. "Mutant signature detected name Kitty Pryde age 14." Cerebros said.
Kitty was unsure what was happening to her and was nervous and scared like many young mutants who just found out. She wasn't sure what to do or even think.
Professor X saw Cerebros' alert and decided they needed to find her. "Everyone there is young mutant who has been detected her name is Kitty Pryde she lives somewhere in the city I want you to be on the look out for her," Professor X told them.
So all the young mutants were keeping an eye out for Kitty.
Meanwhile Kitty was trying out her powers. She saw she could phase through any solid object. "Whoa how strange can it get," Kitty said. "But also pretty cool," she said.
Then she heard talking it was Piotr and Jubilee they were looking for Kitty. "Excuse me why are you looking for me? I don't even know you two," Kitty said.
"Professor X a telepath let us know that you are newly detected mutant and we needed to find you and talk to you and your folks," Jubilee explained.
"Why?" Kitty asked.
"Just like you Kitty we are mutants, and at Charles Xavier's school for the gifted we all learn how to control our mutant powers and use them for the greater good and learn how to try to fit in better," Jubilee said. "While people are more accepting of mutants now a days there are still some who don't like mutants or approve of them," she said.
"Yes not only does he want to help mutants in America but all around the world," Piotr said.
"Mind if we explain things to you and your folks?" Jubilee asked.
"Okay follow me my family's apartment is this way," Kitty said and they made it to Kitty's apartment. She opened the door.
"Kitty are these new friends of yours?" her mother asked.
"Mom this is Jubilee, and Piotr, they want to talk to you and dad about something important along with me," Kitty said.
Kitty's parents were sitting down while Piotr and Jubilee explained things. "So there you have it Professor X really would like it if Kitty comes to be part of the school to learn how to control her powers and use it to help others," Jubilee explained.
"Do all mutants have similar powers?" her father asked.
"No, mutants can have different powers for each other too, some can have similar powers or the same powers as another but some have different powers than other mutants," Piotr explained.
"I for instance can shoot pure energy from my hands," Jubilee said.
"I can give myself a tough metal armor on my body that makes me impervious to harm and super strong," Piotr said.
"We know mutants with other powers too, one we know has super speed," Jubilee said.
"Another we know has powers with animals," Piotr said. "But there are still others that have different powers," he said.
"I don't know," Kitty's father said.
"Dear I think this is best for Kitty it may help her, after all ever since she was little we knew she was different, so let's allow her to go," Kitty's mother said.
"Okay fine but want her to call and write every chance she gets," her father said.
Kitty packed up her things and Professor X was notified that Kitty was coming. Kitty came to the school and saw it was a big mansion and she was nervous to say the least.
She saw she was bunking with Jubilee and Hannah. "Okay I hope you don't mind the stuffed animals," Hannah said. "Or my video games," she said.
"Not at all," Kitty said then chose an empty bunk.
Soon came time to practice in the danger room. Kitty was plenty nervous about this and worried she would have to do it. But instead she had to watch for the fist time to see how it is done.
"This is so mutants can practice their powers." Professor X explained.
Hannah was working with some animals in the simulation. While Warren was practicing his flying skills. Kurt was practicing teleportation. Piotr was practicing with his strength and endurance.
"Feel like joining them?" Professor X asked. "It would be a good chance for you to practice your phasing," he said.
"Okay," Kitty said and suited up and went into the danger room.
Professor X set up a training session in area for Kitty to practice her phasing. She phased through many of the objects but still bumped into a few a bit embarrassed.
"Don't worry it takes practice to get the hang of your powers," Hannah told her.
"Yes just remember to take your time too," Warren told her.
"Yes time and patience are the key," Kurt said.
Kitty stared at him surprised about his looks. "Sorry for staring it's just you look different from the other mutants," Kitty said.
"Trust me I get stares a lot," Kurt explained. "But it doesn't bother me anymore," he said.
"Oh," Kitty said.
"Okay all of you that's enough training for now you may go about you activities," Professor X said.
They left the danger room.
Kitty soon met the other mutants. It was hard to believe how many mutants were in the school. Some where teachers while others were students like her.
Just maybe this was so bad and she could get through this new phase in her life.
