Whew! It was a busy day but here you go! I hope ya'll enjoy this chapter! Thank you so much for all the reviews! Love Ya'll!
Tris rolls over, she wasn't even sure what time it was, probably late in the evening. Her season opener with Chicago Sky was the next day and Tobias had pulled out all the stops for her to relax after her practice, surprising her with a candlelit dinner, a massage, and a bubble bath. She reached for her phone and sent a few text messages.
She laughs at Nita's account of her blind date the night before, Kia Cooper one of her teammates tagged her in a video of them acting silly at practice earlier in the day. Marlene had sent her, Lynn, and Christina a video of Kai trying to feed himself. She was on cloud 9, life was good and the fact that she and Tobias were together and married was the icing on the cake but she realizes their little honeymoon is over as she would be heading out on her first road trip of the season the next week.
She groans as she stretches willing herself to move, Tobias had told her he was going to fix himself something to drink. They made love once already after her bath but she could definitely go for another round. She is about to get up to see what he was doing when Tobias comes in with a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries, a white rose, and a glass of champagne.
"More surprises?" Tris asks with a grin as she sits up.
"I told you I had a few more," Tobias sits on the edge of the bed and gives Tris a soft smile.
"This is sweet, you don't have to spoil me though" She picks up the rose and smells it then takes the champagne glass from him taking a sip.
"Yes I do, I have five years worth of spoiling you to make up for and I kind of got myself something this time too so just go with it"
He takes the champagne glass from her, sets it on the nightstand, and then holds up one of the strawberries to her mouth. She slowly takes a bite licking her lips, tasting the sweetness of the chocolate, never taking her eyes off Tobias. Their lovemaking had been so intense, they could barely keep their hands off each other. It was clear to him Tris was turned on again. Tobias leans in and gives her a sultry kiss running his tongue along her bottom lip, tasting the chocolate. He grins against her lips when Tris moans and grabs him by the shoulders to pull him closer to her.
"Before we get carried away again, I think I should give you this" Tobias chuckles as he pulls away and Tris pouts. He sets the plate on the bed and gets up to grab something out of his Louis Vitton Duffle bag in the closet. He sets two blue Tiffany boxes in front of her, one was larger than the other and he nudges it toward her.
"What's this?"
"Open it and find out" Tobias gives her a big grin.
Tris picks up the box and gasps when she opens it. Inside was a beautiful radiant cut stone with a slim band. It was the biggest diamond Tris had ever seen. There were two small bands in the box that served as a ring guard with small diamonds on the band.
"Tobias….when did you have time, this is too much...Oh my God"
Tobias takes the rings and slides them over her ring finger covering her tattoo.
"I went to Tiffany's and they were more than happy to let me exchange the ring I had purchased for Nicole, I wanted you to have something special that stood out"
"Well it definitely does, this must have cost a fortune, Can we afford this?" Tris breathes out with her eyes still wide as she inspects the ring on her finger. She wasn't opposed to Tobias being thoughtful but she realized her mother's modesty and frugalness weighed on her more than she realized.
"You're worth every penny. All together with your bands, its 6 carats, for my Six"
"Six….Tobias" Tris feels her eyes fill with tears as she leans forward to kiss him. "Thank you, I love it I really do"
After a few more kisses Tobias opens the other box to show Tris what's inside.
"How do you like this one?"
Tris grinned. It was a black band for him with 4 diamonds across the top. It was masculine and perfect for him.
"Now with your tattoo, everyone will know to keep their hands off my man," She says as she waggles her eyebrows causing him to laugh.
Tris moves the ring boxes and the plate of chocolate-covered strawberries to the nightstand so she can straddle her husband.
"I had plans for those strawberries," Tobias says playfully as he runs his hands over Tris's body.
"Oh don't you worry, so do I"
"I know you are making a statement about our relationship but can I say just I would really like to see you in this later, preferably with no panties," Tobias leans on the bed as Tris smooths out her hair one last time before grabbing a pair of giant gold hoop earrings that touched her shoulder to finish off her look. She smirks at Tobias in the mirror.
"I think that can be arranged" she adds in a sultry tone full of promise while flashing him a smile.
She was wearing a pair of 4-inch nude Christina Loubtaon pumps, cropped distressed jeans that hugged her hips and thighs topped off with a women's cut Charlotte Hornets tank top jersey with Tobias's name and number 4. She made sure her wedding ring set was placed on her finger.
Tris knew the drill now that this was her third WNBA season. The Chicago Sky's PR team did all kinds of social media videos for fans. One of the most popular things was filming players as they entered the building to suit up before a game. It was basically a fashion show. Tobias was going to be sitting courtside at the game. She knew as soon as that picture was posted and people saw him at the game it would be clear they were together again.
As predicted Nicole was already posting about her pregnancy and all kinds of dramatic quotes about single mothers. And she of course had been super dramatic the past two days, live streaming to all her followers telling them that Tobias cheated on her. It was all over the gossip blogs. She hadn't mentioned Tris, which Tris assumed was on purpose, so she could secure some money for a tell-all interview and then drop Tris's name. This was the perfect opportunity.
A few hours later, Tobias, Uriah, and Christina cheer on Tris in her home opener in their courtside seats. Tobias grins and grabs a picture when Tris takes off her warm-up top and reveals she has Prior-Eaton on the back of her jersey. Tris has an excellent game scoring 25 points in the win against the Phoenix Mercury.
After the game, Tris and Tobias both share the picture of Tris captured before the game on the Sky's social media, and as predicted everyone went crazy. Tobias also posted a few stories at the game with Tris showing off her married name on her jersey.
"Baby, my phone has been blowing up with mentions. Sportscenter, People, The ShadeRoom, you name it" Tobias tells Tris as they lay in bed, while he was massaging her calf muscles.
"Tori says congratulations and it's about time," Tris relays with a giggle as she continues to read her messages.
Tobias chuckles, he had received a similar message from Kenyon in Dallas and a few other people as well but their fans were continuing to chime in too.
"My favorite couple is back together!"
"They'll have such pretty babies!"
"She's so much better than that IG Model he was with"
"This is messy, isn't he having a baby with that Nicole chick?"
"Dang T Money is a legend, he knows how to pull 'em!"
"Oh My God, look at the rock!"
"I bet the other chick tried to trap him"
"Oh Tris Prior Letting them know!"
"T Money Got him a real one!"
"Wait Do you see the rock on her finger?!"
"Yeah, mine too! Zeke says that he's already gotten a call from Essence Magazine, they want to know if we would do a spread and let them publish our wedding photos" Tris grins as she looks at all the messages she had.
They had received the photographs from the wedding photographer, Tris had only shared them with Lauren and their mothers so far. She knew there would be some crazy thoughts about her and Tobias with Nicole pregnant but she was surprised there were more positive comments than negative.
"Let's do it, I have no problem with everyone knowing you are my wife,"
Tobias growls and he covers her. Tris bites her lip as he kisses his way down her body.
"Now I think I owe you something for having such a great game" Tobias gives her a wink as he pulls her panties down.
Tris sighs pleasantly as moves his tongue just the way she likes. This she could get used to.
Nicole sits in her bed in her apartment fuming as she scrolls through her Instagram feed. There was Tris Prior on every gossip blog sporting Tobias's jersey with a huge rock on her finger.
"Married, Ahhhhhh" She screams out in frustration and throws her phone across the room. She can't believe after her live about him leaving her people were still supportive of his relationship with Tris.
This was not over, not by a long shot. Tris Prior was not going to have the last laugh.
A few weeks later, Tris and Tobias are getting ready for bed. They had a great dinner with Uriah and Christina to catch up. Uriah was done for the season after winning their series against the Hawks but losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in the next round. He and Christina had just gotten back from the Dominican Republic for a short vacation so Uriah could relax. It had only been a month but everyone was adjusting well to Tris and Tobias not only being together again but also being married. Tris and the Sky were having a good season so far, if they kept it up they would for sure make the playoffs. Tris's entire family including Marlene, Harrison, her niece and nephew, and Evelyn had just left after everyone spent a week in Chicago to catch two of her home games. Her father, Harrison, and Tobias spent a day golfing, she and her mother were getting along much better. Kai and Sienna were so happy to play together. Things felt normal and perfect for the last month at least.
Tobias had a phone call as soon as they got home and Tris tried not to hover as she busied herself in the bedroom but she could hear his tone was somber.
"Well I'm officially a free agent and I cut ties with Jack, he wasn't pushing anything, he knew this was coming and he wasn't looking at other teams for me. I think he thinks it's a waste of time since the Hornets cut me"
"Do you have to go through him for anything else?" Tris asks as she ties her sleep scarf on her head.
"Technically it was only for my current contract, if he doesn't negotiate another deal for me then I don't have to resign with him"
"Did they agree to the buyout?"
"Yeah, thankfully I had the guarantee for the buyout on my contract. I had 3 million guaranteed for next year so they had to give me that"
Tris nods, they had lots of conversations about finances as they went through the process of combining their assets and Caleb had been working on setting up some new investments for them. They had started to plan out several scenarios with Tobias not getting picked up. The condo was fine for now, but with Tobias wanting to make space for when he would have time with his son or daughter, they wanted to look at purchasing a larger home. The question was where Tobias could end up anywhere and there wasn't a WNBA team in very many cities if Tris were to seek a trade, which she wasn't crazy about. She was dedicated to her team in Chicago, she wanted to continue to work with the momentum they had to build a championship team. The good thing was they still had time to figure things out. Their lawyer Niles, was already planning for what the family courts would be looking for regarding Tobias having to pay child support so Tris and Tobias could plan better.
"Did you talk to Zeke about signing with him while he was here for the game last week?"
"No I haven't, Zeke and I are….it's complicated," Tobias says after a moment as he pulls the covers back on his side of the bed
"I thought you two talked it out" Tris furrows her eyebrows. She had wanted to tell Zeke about her and Tobias being married herself. He had been quiet as he took in the information but seemed okay. She could tell he was really trying to keep some boundaries in place with being overprotective about her.
"We did but, we aren't going to be close like we once were…" Tobias says carefully.
Tris feels a pang of guilt run through her. She thought there wouldn't be any collateral damage from her and Zeke's failed relationship but his relationship with Tobias clearly was.
"This is because of me isn't it" she whispers plopping down on the bed.
Tobias grabs her arm and pulls her close.
"Baby this is not your fault. I fully accept my part in this and how Zeke and I fell out. You had a right to date whoever you wanted after we broke up. So did Zeke but some things you just can't get over. I don't have any ill will against him, but things aren't going to go back to the way they were. I'm okay with it."
"Do you think if you ask him to be your agent he would?"
"I don't know, it's business, I'm willing to set aside everything for that. He can always pass me off to Amar if he wants to but Zeke is a smart businessman, I think we can agree to have a working relationship"
Tris nods. She had been afraid of this, but all she could do was trust Tobias's judgment right now.
The weeks start to fly by as Christina and George work with Tobias. Everyone feels like it's old times again. Christina and Tris are excited to be in the same building once she settled in with Uriah. Will decides to train with Uriah and Tobias as well, it was great to be able to spend his summer in Chicago with his son, his mother, sister Cara and his niece and nephew.
"Come on Tobias stop being a baby, push through the pain" Christina taunts him as he works on the leg press.
Christina had impressed her new boss George with her knowledge of basketball and her sports medicine skills. She looked at each strengthening exercise with a different perspective and was getting rave reviews from all of the clients George assigned her to. She had two other ballplayers she had been assigned but George had allowed her more time with Tobias as the weeks went on.
Tobias grunts as pushes through as the metal of the leg press clanks back down.
"Damn, Chris, I didn't think you were this much of a drill sergeant" Tobias complains, the sweat dripping from his brow.
"You can't bat your eyes and get off that easy with me T. Money. Come on one more set, then George wants to run some drills with you, Will and Uriah"
Christina records a few videos for the Wu Sports Performance Social media pages of Will, Tobias, and Uriah. Even though it had been five years since the three played together, the three worked well together on the court. Tobias had great natural instincts and ball-handling skills. Christina could see an improvement in him in the short time she had been working with him.
Tobias was working harder than he ever had in his life, and he was determined to put the work in.
Tobias puts a call into Zeke, and he agrees to take Tobias on as a client. Tobias flies to Atlanta for a meeting with Amar and Zeke to discuss his options regarding free agency when Tris leaves for her next four game road trip. Despite their differences, Zeke knew Tobias had the potential, and Amar agreed it would be a smart move to sign him. He had seen the training videos Christina was posting and he knew Tobias had the talent, he just needed a team to take a chance on him. After a conversation with Amar, they both felt confident they could get a team to pick up Tobias, even though it might not be a high market team and it would probably only be a 1 or 2-year deal.
"You know I can talk to Amar about him handling you directly if that's what you want," Zeke says as he and Tobias take a seat in the conference room while they wait for Amar to finish up a call.
Tobias takes a sip of his coffee while he gathers his thoughts. He knew they would have to have this conversation sooner or later.
"Do you want that?" Tobias finally asks, wanting to see where Zeke's head was at.
"T. I'll be honest with you, I know we'll never be as close as we used to be after everything but I understand we are going to be in each other's lives. We don't have to be best friends to do it"
"I can respect that," Tobias says honestly.
"Now let's get this money" Zeke smiles as he opens his portfolio.
Tobias leans back in his chair as Amar comes in. His friendship with Zeke was never going to be what it was before he left college. The fact that Zeke was willing to keep things cordial and still work with him, being the bigger man to put all the past drama and his love for Tris behind him, reminded Tobias how much of a good guy Zeke really was. He respected him for it. Their new chapter wouldn't look like their old one but Tobias feels good about it.
When Tris has a 4 day trip to New York to play the New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun, Tobias, Will, Uriah, and Christina make the trip too. Christina enjoys the opportunity to show Tris and Tobias where she was from. Tris has one free afternoon off before her game after a morning practice and team meeting so the group ventures out to Harlem to the famed Rucker Park to see some of the basketball games.
Rucker Park was named for Holcombe Rucker who started the first basketball tournament in 1950 to help unfortunate kids stay off the streets, aiming for college careers. Players in those Rucker Tournaments employed slam dunks, crossover dribbles, even trash-talk, a style then foreign to the NBA.
If anyone wanted to prove themselves in the game of basketball, they had to play Rucker Park. Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, were just a few names of players who earned their respect in a game of streetball.
Christina and Tris take a seat on the aluminum bleachers for spectators. Several kids run up to Uriah, Will, and Tobias asking for autographs. They all smile and take pictures.
"Damn T Money so washed up he up here at Rucker Park?" A cocky guy says loudly from the court as he shoots a three-point shot that goes in smoothly.
Tobias takes a deep breath through his nostrils. He didn't come here to talk shit but you couldn't show up here and not play after a challenge like that.
"I make it a habit to not call out people if I can't back up my talk," Tobias says smugly.
"My crew can take you right now, 5 on 5"
Will and Uriah smirk.
"You sure you want to do this…" Will challenges.
"All ya'll play for washed-up teams anyway, T Money ain't even got a team," says another guy who walks up.
"Tris, you want some of this?" Uriah calls.
"Most definitely" Tris grins as she gets up.
"Man, look at this, a chick"
"You know she's one of the baddest WNBA players right?" Tobias smirks. He loved when guys underestimated his wife because she always proved them wrong.
"That don't matter, the WNBA weak as hell anyway"
Tris nods her head at Tobias, he knew what she was thinking.
"Let's go, Chris" Tris nudges Christina as she tightens the laces on her jordans. Thankfully they were all dressed casually and she was wearing a t-shirt and pair of shorts with her sneakers just like Christina.
"Oh no, I haven't played in forever, I can't keep up with the 4 of you" Christina studders. She hadn't played a real game in probably a year and that wasn't even the full court up and down she had been used to at Dauntless. She shot around when Uriah, Tobias, and some of the other clients worked on drills but she felt like she couldn't hang with Tobias, Uriah, Will, and Tris.
"Come on Chris, You aren't that rusty" Tris edges.
Christina groans but gives in when she sees Uriah grinning and waving to her to come on. Tobias looks at Christina, he didn't have his knee brace. He was feeling the best had since the surgery. The training and conditioning with Uriah and Will had been good for him but he hadn't played in a full-court game for over 8 months.
"Trust the knee, It will hold. You put the work in" Christina says to Tobias quietly sensing his hesitation.
The announcer at the park and the music blasting only contributed to the vibe of the game.
"Looks like we are in for a treat today. We got Uriah Pedrad, Will Anderson, Tobias Eaton, and Tris Prior in the house today. This is about to be insane" The announcer calls out.
From the moment the game starts, Tobias feels like he hadn't had this much fun playing ball since he was in high school. Tobias is alive on the court for what he feels like for the first time in years. Even though he, Uriah, and Tris hadn't played together like this in years they were completely in sync. Tris and Christina still knew how to play off each other well too. Tris keeps shooting, not wanting to tire herself out for her game the next day, but she effortlessly handles the player she is matched with. He can't guard her or stop her shooting. Christina sticks to passing but gets a few shots in, boosting her confidence. Will and Uriah both get a few dunks that have the entire stands going wild.
The crowd grows larger as word spreads that there are three NBA players and a WNBA player on the court and the stands fill quickly with spectators. Tobias is in the zone, he knows he hasn't played with this much skill since college. He lets his instincts guide him and toys with the guy guarding him that was talking trash. Tris smiles because she can see Tobias is having so much fun.
"Tobias Eaton is putting on a clinic today folks! This is how it's done, He's got 35 points. Tris Prior is draining 3s, she's got 21 points. And we know that Christina Wilson is out there balling too, five Dauntless University players, this is something you don't get to see every day folks."
Tris focuses on the ball as the guy she was guarding tries to get fancy with his ball handling. Tris reaches in causing him to lose the ball. Tobias hustles to the other side of the court, she fires quickly to Uriah who tosses it up for Tobias. Tobias jumps up grabbing the ball for a dunk and hangs on the rim while the crowd goes insane. Tobias feels good when he jumps down, knowing Christina was right, his knee was good.
After the game, they are all sweaty but smiling after crushing the other team 97 to 45. Everyone agreed they would have crushed them more if Tris had been actually playing hard. Their opponents ran off after getting smacked, unable to take the trash talk from the crowd. The group poses for more pictures and autographs. Tobias looks over a Tris and smiles as she signs a shirt for a young girl. She was what was missing from basketball for him. Tris looks up to see Tobias watching her and smiles.
"Okay, I have to admit today was fun, I didn't realize how much I missed playing" Christina smiles at dinner that evening. After heading back to the hotel the friends grab dinner in the hotel restaurant so Tris can get to bed early for her team meeting and game the next day.
"Yeah, I can't tell you the last time I had that much fun playing" Tobias admits too.
"Yo, look at this, someone posted a video from today. T. you are blowing up," Will says looking at his phone and showing it to the table.
"It's on ESPN too, dang 100,000 likes already, it looks like T Money is back" Uriah grins.
The next afternoon at the arena waiting for Tris's game to start, Christina, Uriah, Will, and Tobias chat about the game the day before. The videos of their game had spread like wildfire across social media.
Tobias feels his phone buzz as he waves to Tris on the court who smiled back at him during her warm-up drills.
Zeke: Call me when you get a minute, we need to talk. That video of you at Rucker Park has the phone ringing off the hook.
Tobias closes his eyes and smiles, he had a second chance and he was going to make it count.
Tris had to travel to Indiana for her next game against the Fever before heading back to Chicago with the team but Tobias was waiting for her in the parking lot as soon as the bus pulled into the parking lot from the airport.
Tobias had his Range Rover shipped to Chicago since he and Tris flew and her Lexus SUV stayed there. He leaned against the door of the brand new Porsche Macan with a red bow on the hood and a single red rose in his hand as he watched the players trickle off the bus from the airport. He figured Tris might be a little upset but he took a chance with his gesture since he traded in her SUV while she was gone. He wanted to celebrate his new contract by getting her a gift. She was the reason he had this new contact. All the empty things he had spent on Nicole he wanted to give her the world. Tobias chuckles as her teammates point and shout as they gather their luggage from underneath the charter bus.
Tris looks around as she throws her duffle bag over her shoulder trying to figure out what everyone was talking about. Tobias grins when her eyes go wide and she smiles and drops her head as she looks to where they were pointing.
"What are you doing?" She grins as she walks up and kisses him as her teammates hoot and holler.
"I got you a little something"
"A freaking Porsche? Tobias, it's too much we talked about this"
They weren't hurting at all with the money they had in the bank but Caleb wanted them to think long-term about big purchases with no new contract for Tobias. Tris has commented on how much she loved the Porsche SUVs when they saw one even though she didn't need a new car, Tobias could tell she was trying to convince herself that she couldn't have it.
"Well we are celebrating so I consider this your kickback for helping me land a new contract"
"New Contract? Wait where? Oh My God Baby! I'm so proud of you!" Tris jumps up and down dropping her duffle bag and wrapping her arms around his neck as he lifts her off the ground while squeezing her tight.
"It's all because of you" Tobias whispers in her ear.
"You've been working so hard, don't sell yourself short" Tris was so proud of him. When they were younger Tobias had been so cocky and sure of himself. It had been odd for her to see him struggle with his confidence. The past few months he had been so focused, watching film of himself, staying later after his training sessions. She had never seen him work this hard.
"You pushed me, got me to come here to train, encouraged me to work with Zeke and Amar, you had faith in me"
"Where?" Tris bites her lip her mind running over the places that were a possibility. She hoped it was somewhere close, Memphis, Cleveland, Atlanta would be ideal but that was unlikely, it was going to be tough anywhere else since Charlotte wasn't an option. Even Denver or New York would be better than any of the west coast teams but they had to take what they could get.
Tobias grins, as Tris looks at him anxiously waiting for his answer.
"The Bulls offered me two years at 10 million with the option to restructure after the first year if I perform well"
Tris squeals and practically climbs Tobias as he laughs while he wraps his arms around her. Neither one of them thought Chicago would be an option for him. They were a solid team and a historic franchise but still had a few missing pieces to make the team ready to truly compete for a championship. Tobias suspects Uriah had talked him up a bit too. This made this so much easier for them to be together when Tris was home from Italy. After a minute Tris lets go and squeals again as she runs around to the driver's side to hop in her new ride. Tobias takes the bow off and points out a few of the features to her. The pure joy on her face made everything worth it.
