Keeping the Girl away from the Beast

A/N: evolution-500 brought this to my attention recently, so I have to rectify this with this chapter. Here goes.

The large chamber that housed an in-progress behemoth of synthetic flesh, bone and metal was anything but comforting. Partially submerged in liquefied plastic, locked in a state of conflict where one of its arms was wedged into a wall, the giant's only decorative feature was its large, cybernetic eye on its head.

Gendo, standing in front of the immobilized being, had several things on his mind that he'd rather not have to concern himself about, and what happened before and after the Third Child had arrived to Tokyo-3 was among them. Never in his life did he ever expect to see some sort of…dinosaur with his son…or that the boy himself would be so attached to it, either. It was both annoying…and a threat to his own goals if this thing they were persisted.

"…How was Rei today?" Ritsuko Akagi's voice was heard by him, as she was nearby. "Did you see her in the hospital?"

"She'll be able to work again in thirty days," he informed her. "By then, we'll be ready to reactivate Unit-00."

"And…what of…the creature that came with the Third Child? It's been confirmed to be an hermaphroditic organism of human and reptilian DNA, and it's currently living with him in his quarters until further notice."

"For now, we need more information on it. It may very well be a relic from Ultratech's former glory days."

"And if it is?"

"Find out how it managed to survive since before Second Impact and go unnoticed for years."

"And what if your son has something to say about that?"

"Remove him from the equation."

"That…may prove difficult; he's only agreed to stay until we find another pilot willing to operate the Eva, but he's keeping the creature with him. If we try anything to it that hurts or kills it, he'll walk away, no matter what we say."

"He threatened to quit?"

"It's really hard for him to quit if he doesn't see himself as an employee and his boss is someone he hates more than anything else. And the creature's already mirrored some of that disgust towards you if it mentions not liking you as much as your son doesn't."

"Also, it would be in NERV's best interests…if the First Child were kept away from the creature for her own protection."

Ritsuko, however, had her doubts that the dinosaur would even be interested in the First Child; it only seemed interested in the Third Child.

In the room she was assigned to in order to recover, the albino girl, Rei Ayanami, awoke in the darkness and wondered what happened with the Angel that had attacked; all she knew was that she was on standby in case the new pilot hadn't arrived, but she wasn't informed of anything else beyond that. And she was still in a lot of pain. Her series of injuries were as follows: A fractured arm, minor splenic rupturing, minor liver function impairment, temporary visual impairment in her left eye until she recovered, and a broken rib. It was a minor miracle she was still alive after the failed activation test with Unit-00.

What has happened? She wondered.
