Aleksander should really have known better than to send anyone after me. I was the one who taught him all he knew about being unseen, unnoticeable, and untraceable. No one would find me unless I wanted them to. I'd hoped to have the girl with me, but I could adapt. One door closes and another opens.

Her tracker friend had been too easy to convince. The fool was half in love with her already, and had jumped at the chance to play her hero. The holy man would take a bit more convincing, but he was all too eager to get his hands on his precious Santka. He would come around.

Maybe it was better this way. The more amplifiers the girl gained, the stronger her light will be when the time comes.

I'd always been the most powerful summoner. Even my son could not match me, though he grew closer every year. And that would be a problem, one day soon he'd be stronger than even me.

That would not do. I'd have to get rid of him soon.

I ran my hand down my ribs, absently stroking the bones fused under the skin there.

He'd make a fine addition. Easily the strongest. I could only imagine the rush of new strength his bones would give. It was all I thought I'd get, more power, never what I truly wanted.

I'd been too hasty in seeking out and attempting to dispose of the Sun Summoner. I'd found the dagger and scientist not long after I'd razed her village. At first, I thought I'd made a mistake, but she survived. It'd been fate. Everything was falling into place. I had no further use for the scientist, so I disposed of him. And now I was the only one who knew about its existence. All I needed was the dagger and the girl. That dagger would give me everything I'd ever wanted.
