Chapter 1

Four years ago, Natalie Prior lost her 10-year-old daughter, and no one will tell me what happened. I was "lucky" to have been sent to Chicago to help the Bureau from the inside. Since I was young, I had a thing for computers, and I was naturally good with them. I had accidentally found the Computer Room when I was wandering the halls and meet Matthew, my one and only friend. I have been in charge of taking care of anything that had to do with computers. Most of the time, it was looking over surveillance on the experiments or fixing David's computer that happened often.

Everyone at the Bureau liked me I was nice, good at what I did, a kid kept to myself, and worked all the time. What they didn't know was that I was always pulling pranks on them. They would never find out, and they seemed harmless other than I had full access to their phones and computers. They sent me to Chicago in the hopes that I could be this Beatrice girl that is was Natalie's daughter.

I have known Natalie for a few years now. I was helping her save the Divergent's, which is the same thing as Genetically Pure people (or GP for short), get out when someone is trying to kill them. I always liked the way Divergent sounds it sounds more threatening than Genetically Pure. From the way Natalie spoke to me, she probably thought I was much older.

Matthew and I have known each other for the past nine years, he is three years older than I am, but it never bothered me. When I was seven, we were wondering the genetic testing lab and got his mom to teach us how it worked and what it meant. She showed us two samples from each of us. Both Matthew's results were normal, Genetically Pure. My first results were the same, but the second was GD (Genetically Damaged). His mom did tests on me for about a year but kept it a secret from everyone because she was afraid that if someone found out, I could be in danger. She told us that the only thing that would explain why that was, was because of my dad. His physical and mental abuse made it so that my genes are both pure and damaged. She was found dead the next day, and we made a promise to keep what she told us a secret, and he is the only person alive to know about what my dad did.

The smell of bleach woke me up. It will be another few hours before the sun rises and everyone in Abnegation wakes up. Since Beatrice had blond hair, I have to bleach my hair constantly so that no one sees the red. When I open my eyes, I see Natalie at the door. If looks could kill, Natalie would have died years ago.

I get up and put the sheet of plastic over my back so the bleach doesn't get on my clothes and sit on the toilet with my hair down and Natalie starts to bleach my hair.

Half an hour later, she's done, and I start to get up when she stops me.

"Is everything alright Natalie?"

She smiles and looks at me and says "Marcus is coming over tonight."

"I will be in my room."

"I made sure his son was coming over as well."

I start scratching my left wrist. "I, um, it okay I haven't been hungry lately and um, cough cough."

"You know, I was about your age when I met Andrew," she wiggles her eyes brows.

"Oh my gosh! Natalie!" I say laughing. I shake my head "you were lucky, you were also going to stay here for the rest of your life. At least that's what I read if I remember correctly." I give her a sarcastic smile.

"You have to understand that his son is 16."

"Natalie, Whatever you want to say, just say it. choosing day is in a month or so, so if there is something you want me to do just say it." I always did like Natalie lets me be me when it's just the two of us.

"He's a quiet kid," she doesn't continue.

"What's his name?" She looks at me confused, "his name, if I'm going to have to spend time with him tonight, I should know his name and anything else you think I should know."

She nods, "Tobias."

Shit. Too many things associated with that name that I can't let anyone know. I stand up and puke in the toilet. I'm not one to reveal anything but when that name is said, the first thing that comes to mind is my father. When he was done doing whatever he was going to do, I would through up anything I had in my stomach.

I never told Natalie about my life, but I do think that she has an idea of what my father did to me. She knows that his name is Tobias and that when I puke, you stay there because I will not let you help, and I will pretend that it never happened.

When I stop, I close the toilet cover, flush the toilet, and sit back down.

She continues, "so, I was hoping that you could get to know him. He could probably use someone to talk to. His dad seems nice and all but because he is in the government, I doubt they talk much."

I nod my head, and Natalie starts to leave when she turns around and says, "You can always talk to me." I knew that she is telling me the truth since we have both been there for each other. "And if you feel up to it when they leave, you can call him."

I know she is talking about Matthew and smile.

She leaves.
