Chapter 3
When I get to call Matthew, I get to have a conversation with someone that I don't have to pretend around. I thank her and she leaves my room. I have to wait until later because no one is supposed to hear me. I don't want to think about it because then I will think time is passing by too slowly. Instead I do my homework. I still had homework from last week so I figured it would be a good distraction. When I finish, I see that I still have to wait a few minutes. My thoughts wander off to Marcus' son. He is choosing this year. I know that he doesn't want to stay here, because if he does, he will have to live with his dad. If he picked Candor, initiation would kill him, truth serum as they call it here. Erudite, he may be able to make it, if he is smart enough. His computer skills should help with that but I'm not sure that is enough. He could go into Dauntless, it's probably the best choice. If he makes it, he has learned to defend himself although they are going to change the leadership which we have already figured out that they will add the fear serum which may be the reason that he doesn't pass initiation. If he doesn't pass initiation, he will be factionless. Factionless, with his mother.
I get brought out of my thoughts by a phone call.
I pick up and say, "Hello?"
"Hey, how are you?" Even if it has just been a month, I can't help but have a surge of happiness overcome me.
"Good, you?"
"Are you sure, you know you can tell me if something's wrong"
"Matthew, you have known me for far too long to know that nothing is ever wrong."
He pauses, "Whatever, you're hopeless, I'm good."
"Matthew, what happened?"
"Nothing, if there is something to tell, I'll tell you at the end."
"And you wonder why you are still single."
"Ummm, like it's any of your business"
"You've got to be kidding me! Who is it? Okay, I know that you are probably not dating them yet but give me details!"
"Victoria"
"Really, her? You could do so much better. What has she had now? Fifteen, twenty boyfriends?, who is it really?"
"How, how?"
"You complain about her all the time, 'she doesn't know what the fifty-seventh element is'. How Aleezah?
"She's good, I asked her to come and help me with a science experiment. Anyway that's not the point, Victoria asked me to the dance"
"Dude, you just admitted to liking Aleezah! And Victoria, just wants to make Jackson jealous. I mean they did just break up."
"I'm so confused. You girls are confusing."
"Ya ya ya, I know. Never go for Victoria, she has ulterior motives that will only benefit her. Aleezah on the other hand, sweet, and would like and laugh at any of your jokes. Don't be scared of her rejecting you, be scared if you don't do anything."
"But how do I know if she is interested?"
"When you asked her to help you with science, what did she say?"
"Umm, sure."
"My friend, you are hopeless. Word for word, I know you asked her what an hour ago? It was lunch and you got off early for the dance."
"I can't let anything past you, can I?"
"No and stop avoiding the question, what did she say word for word and intonation?"
"She looked me in the eyes and had that cute look and said, 'I would love to help you with your experiment'."
"Stop blushing, what were her friends acting?"
"They told me to leave and they asked me why I would want her help."
"Then what did you do?"
"I said, 'Oxygen Magnesium! I just think that she is smart and could help me.' And then I left. And she lagged when I said, 'Oxygen magnesium'."
"She likes you."
"But what the Internet told me is that if the friends try to get you to leave, the girl doesn't like you"
"I really need to go and change what all say, don't I? Anyway, no, she likes you but her friends don't know. So, just be yourself and all will be good. She likes you for you, you're smart and amazing self."
"Why are you being like this?"
"I have been with people that don't realize that either they like someone or that they say 'I love you' in front of them, and the other doesn't notice. You deserve someone like her.
"Thanks."
"And, since I taught you well, when she comes over when we hang up, ask her to the dance. And call Victoria and tell her that you don't think that you would be good for her. That way, you tell her you don't want to go with and that way you don't break her heart too much."
"Thank you! Where would I do without you?"
"First you would have never would have talked to Aleezah, second, you would be on the computer all day."
"Accurate"
"I know, right?" We both start to laugh trying to be quiet. "I have a favour to ask you."
"What is it?"
"Remember that computer I destroyed?"
"Ya, I don't think anyone is going to forget it."
"I left a copy of some videos on its hard drive. I need you to keep it safe. And before you ask, remember that ring I gave you? It's in there."
"I never take it off."
"I know you don't."
"I miss you."
"I miss you too." I start to feel the urge to cry but nothing comes out.
"I'm sorry."
"What? What are you sorry for?"
"She's in the hospital." I can hear his voice start to tremble. "She fell down the stairs." It's the news he said he would tell me at the end.
"That's what he is saying? That Bastard! How can someone like him have so much power? I'm going to kill him."
"I know you would, that's why she is staging with me. My dad knew, he never wanted you to feel bad around him, so he never said anything. He said that we could take care of her."
"I know you would. Thank you. I should come back, but I can't do that to Natalie or Andrew. I would make them feel like bad parents."
"Hey, she is going to be alright, or at least better."
"I know, I know. If it wasn't for you, I never would have come here. And btw, she would be proud of everything you've done."
"Thanks."
With that, we just stay in silence hearing the sounds from the other side. Until we fall asleep.
