Chapter 5
Okay, so I knew the Dauntless were ummm … out there, but I did not think they would make us run onto a moving train and jump off of a what twenty-seven story building? Ummm, no thank you.
I was barely able to make it onto the train but having seen the Dauntless do it on the cameras, I had an idea of how to do it. I was, however, pushed by someone and ended up hitting my knee on the cart before getting in. When I got in, I saw a girl sitting down decide me in Candor vlack and white and decided that if I'm going to survive, I might as well try and get some friends and sit beside her.
"Is it just me or, are they trying to kill us?"
I cuckel," I wouldn't be surprised"
"Christina," she gives me her hand to shake (finally, a normal human that I can shake my hand with!)
"Nice to meet you Christina." I shake her hand. I just can't say my name is Beatrice because that's not my real name. But if I tell her my real name and someone here knows me as Beatrice, I'm in trouble.
"Get ready," someone, probably one of the Dauntless members, shouted.
"What?" Christina asks me.
I look over and see that they are jumping. "They're jumping off." Christina and I both stand up and see that there is a roof that they are jumping on to.
She won't jump and I don't want her to be faction less. "On three," I shout over the wind of the train and take her hand. She nods. "One. Two. Three." and we jump.
We let go of each other in mid air and we fell to the ground. Laughing.
When we get up I see that there is a man standing on a ledge where I'm guessing is a giant hole.
"Listen up! My name is Max! I am one of the leaders of yournew faction. Several stories below us is the members' entrance to our compound. If you can't muster the will to jump off, you don't belong here. Our initiates have the privilege of going first."
"You want us to jump off a ledge? Asks an Erudite girl.
"Yes," Maz says. He looks amused
"Is there water at the bottom or something?"
"Who knows?"
Everyone looks terrified. I get why I mean we don't know what's at the bottom but they don't want to kill us. So as I have learned, someone needs to take the first step and others will follow.
I walk up looking at Max and he nods his head letting me go. I take a deep breath and jump off backwards facing the other initiates. The only thing I knew was that my best chance of not getting hurt was if I squeezed everything to be as straight as possible, and don't make a sound. Before I knew it, I had hit something.
A net. Of course it's a net, what was I thinking? I start to roll over to get off the net and I get off between two strands of rope. I saw that they were about to give me a hand to get off the net but I beat them to it. There is a boy mabey eighteen, who has a cold look on his face but seems to be surprised to see me.
"Can't believe it's a voice." Sais a voice from behind him."A stiff, the first jumper? Unheard of."
"There's a reason she left them, Lauren. What's your name?"
Stupid! Why didn't I think of this before? I can't stand to be Beatrice for the rest of my life.
"Think about it, you don't get to pick it again."
I don't hesitate, "Tirs." It's close to Beatrice so if anyone knows me, it's not to different and easy to remember.
"Tris," Lauren sais."Make the announcement, Four."
"First jumper, Tris." People cheer me on.
Four puts his hand on my back and I spin around stepping back and walking away.
First impression, horrible. I'm never going to get over this fear am I?
