Chapter 9
We all get onto the train without any problems. Peter won't be joining us it seems. And to be honest, I don't like the guy but I do hope he's not hurt to badly. No one said anything so Christina, Will, Al and I start talking.
"You excited for Visiting day?" Christina asks everyone.
"I don't know, I mean my parents will probably come but I hope they don't," Al admits.
"I can't wait for my family to come. I mean, I love them, feel bad for leaving them but I do love it here." Will says.
"I can't wait to introduce my family to you guys." Of cause Christina would say that.
They all look at me, "What?"
"Are you excited?" Will asks.
"I don't think anyone would come and visit me." I confess which is true, but I suspect Natalie is going to come so I don't feel left out.
"Why?" Christina, I wanna kill her! Those Candor need to learn that yes, it is important to tell the truth but sometimes you just gotta shut your mouth.
"I mean I left them behind. Didn't have it in me to say goodbye to them," I say nonchalantly. That part is true. When I was told I was going to be going to the Chicago experiment, I couldn't bring myself to say goodbye.
"What do you think is out there? Like beyond the wall" Christina asks.
"Farms," Will chuckles, which I do as well.
Christina rolls her eyes. "I mean beyond the wall."
"Monsters," Al says. I mean to be fair, he aint that wrong. They are evil.
I notice Four holding the handles and leaning out of the car's door. It reminds me of when I was younger. Me and my older brother were running around outside.
It was the middle of the night so that no one would see us. There was a strong wind and the feeling of the wind on our faces, our hair flying everywhere, I felt good. Whenever there was a wind storm we made it a thing that we would go out and just lay down, forgetting the whatever problems were going through our minds. It's the reason I started to run, having that feeling again and being able to forget about everything.
"They didn't put guard in until five ears ago," Will sais "Don't you remember when Dauntless police used to patrol the factionless sector?"
"Ya."
"Oh ya, I bet you saw them all the time." What the… why would you go around saying something like that? Oh ya, Erudite.
"You memorised the map of the city didn't you?"
"Yes I did," he said a little to proudly.
"What would having to learn to cook be fun?" Before I came to Chicago, I was always the one cooking. The boys were lacking some skills. I would cook for them and my father and if there was enough, I could get some. I love my family and I couldn't let them go hungry, it would have people suspicious.
He was about to say something when the train stopped and they all fell forward. I however, anticipated the train stopping and got ready.
The view, it's better than I remember from the cameras. Fresh air, but no wind.
"Follow me," Four announces.
Christina, Will, Al, and I stay together. Four leads us to the fence
"If you don't rank in the top five at the end of initiation, you will probably end up here. Once you are a fence guard, there is some potential for advancement, but not much. You may be able to go on patrols beyond Amity's farms, but-"
"Patrols for what purpose?" Will asks, I want to slap him so badly.
"I suppose you'll discover that if you find yourself among them. As I was saying. For the most part, those who guard the fence when they are young continue to guard the fence. If it comforts you, some of them insist that it isn't as bad as it seems." Honestly, thy were fun to listen to, all of their stories and jokes, they were always a fun group.
"Yeah. At least we won't be driving buses or cleaning up other people's messes like the factionless," Christina whispers to me.
"What rank were you?" Molly asks.
"I was first."
First in his class, same class as Eric so he's a transfer, dark blue eyes, when he shoots, he does it the way Amar taught his initiates, he knows what he is doing but could not have been here for more than two years since he doesn't have many friends and they don't know him well. I had my suspicions, I was sure, but this, this is the proof. He hasn't figured out who I am or who I'm pretending to be so that's good for me. I thought it would be the right thing to keep him close but I was wrong. He is the one Amar was talking about, the Divergent. Shit. Why? I promised I would protect him. Can I? He has been able to keep himself safe for a while.
"And you chose this? Why didn't you get a government job?"
"I didn't want one." He said at the beginning of initiation that he worked in the control room so was he the one I keeped hacking into trying to get into the Erudite system?
We keep walking to the fence which honestly is more like a wall. There are a lot of guards pulling the door open to let the Amity truck in. It's the time, they always come at this time to deliver the food to the factions.
The truck passes us and we just wait on the side for the truck to pass and for Four to tell us to keep going.
"Beatrice?" a boy calls and who's Beatrice? It sounds like an old person's name. Oh wait, that's my old person's name. I turn around and see an amity boy hugging toward me but he can't, and it's hilarious. Mathew! What is he doing here? And how. No, I know the how but not the why. He could get into so much trouble.
When he gets to me, he hugs me. I instantly hug him back. Over twelve years without hugging, It feels good. We let go after a few seconds. "What happened to you?" he asks.
I laugh, "I could ask you the same question." I respond.
"Beatrice? Is that your real name, Stiff?" Of course Molly would take any chance she had to insult me, one way or another.
"What did you think Tris was short for?"
"Oh, I don't know… weakling? Oh wait, that doesn't start with Tris. My mistake."
Matthew laughs beside me and I elbow him. He pretends that it was a cough.
"Why don't you get back in your truck? We're not supposed to fraternize with the other faction members." Molly buges in.
"Why don't you get away from us?" I snap, stepping in front of Matthew.
"Right. Wouldn't want to get between you and your boyfriend." She walks away smiling.
I feel a hand on my wrist. I try to turn around to get out but I can't, my hand is behind my back. "You haven't changed."
"Jack?"
"Yup." He let go of me.
"What are you doing here?"
"It's not important for now. You'll find out sooner rather than later. Natalie has been filling me in on everything."
"Good."
"Shit," before I could figure out what he was referring to, I was throwing up. I feel him holding my hair even if he knows that he should not do anything, it was the one thing I would let him do. I whip my mouth on the sleeve of my shirt and turn back to him. "I'm sorry."
"It's not you, it's all the time now." I used to throw up whenever I would be reminded of my "father" but since I moved here, to Chicago, it's more of a daily thing.
He nods understanding. "Stop abusing your finger, it's gonna fall off if you keep it up. Oh and I prefer the red."
"Shut up." he runs back to the truck and they continue singing whatever song they were singing.
My hair has started to grow out of it's bleached blond to it's natural red. Red hair was no longer known, it had to be passed through generations. I was the only one at the Bureau who had red hair.
Matthew has always been careful with how he words things. He will not lie to you, he doesn't see the point, and he will stay true to his words. Whatever the reason for him coming here, I will find out in the next week.
I'm so lost in my thought that I don't notice Four standing in front of me until he speaks. "I am worried that you have a knack for making unwise decisions."
"Hardly a two minute talk," I say trying to defend Matthew. He is the closest thing to family that I will have…
"I don't think a smaller time frame makes it any less unwise." He looks at me with what I can guess is a questioning look. "You were an Abnegation correct?" What game is he playing? I nod slowly. "How would a Stiff know anything about makeup? They can't stand to look in the mirror or to make yourself look any different from the others. And how can you make the punching bag move so much? None of the initiates even Dauntless-born can do that."
"Guess that there are just some things that don't make sense." I say shrugging my shoulders.
There is an awkward silence. But at the same time, somewhat comfortable. "Oh, you forgot this this morning." He sais handing me my hoodie.
"I'm sorry about your friend this morning." I say taking my hoodie.
He similes, "it's okay, it was funny seeing his reaction." I still feel bad and he must catch on because he continues "he can take a hit. He was just… not expecting you to do that." I smile in return.
He clears his throat. "Looks like the train is here. Let's go Tirs."
Happy Valentines Day! And for all us single people, have a good day!
