16. Chapter 14
"And why are you really here?" Amar asks
"To save people like you," I tell him
"How?"
"We fake your death and we ship you out. Since you are Dauntless and Initiation instructor, your death would be jumping into the Chasm and depending on when it happens, you will either stay here for a bit or you will be leaving that night."
"How do I know I can trust you?"
"You don't."
"What?"
"You have to trust your gut. If you don't want to go through with it, tell me and I will leave you alone."
"What if I tell someone?"
"Depends, if they are Divergent like you, we could work it out. If they are not, then you could be putting yourself in danger, 'how did you know about it?'. You would be putting Natalie, Andrew and possibly Caleb in danger. Well if you tell me you are going to tell someone, I could save them."
"What about you?"
"What about me?"
"What will happen to you?"
"I don't know, I would try and help as many as possible but I would either be tortured by Jeanine or Evelyne."
He finally takes the knife off of my throat and lets me off his chest so I see him face to face.
"You didn't flinch when I put the knife to your throat."
"Is that a question?"
"Why?"
"If you do decide that you want to escape and go somewhere where you don't have to worry that you are Divergent, that information will get you killed by my brother."
"Alright. What do I have to do?"
Visiting Day.
Visiting day
VISITING DAY!
Visiting day?
I was not looking forward to this day. Families always go and visit their children that transferred and I would too. Natalie and Andrew would go visit Caleb. It is their son after all. I plan to go to the training room and do a mixture of running and punching.
Everyone is getting dressed and I'm happy that I was up earlier.
Everyone looks sad knowing that their parents may not be in the pit. I'm happy that I get to torchure myself.
"Attention!" Eric yells when he walks in. "I want to give you some advice about today. If by some miracle your families do come and visit you which I doubt, it is best not so seem attached. That will make it easier for you, and easier for them. We also take the phrase 'faction before blood' very seriously here. Attachment to your family suggests you aren't entirely pleased with your faction, which would be shameful, Understand?"
We all walk out and I start to head to the training room.
"The Pit is this way." Christina tells me.
"My family isn't coming."
"How do you know?"
"They think Visiting day is a joke. I'm heading to the training room. Have fun with your family." I tell her truthfully.
Once I get to the training room it's empty and I have an urge to yell. I don't know why. I shrug it off and start punching.
About ten minutes pass and I'm running. I hear the door open and laughter coming through. And I stop.
Uriah and a boy that I guess is his brother, also the guy I punched, walk in.
I walk over to my stuff to leave, I don't want to be here for their family time.
"Tris?" Uriah asks.
Shit. Why? Why? He's a super nice guy but I don't want to here for the happy times they are about to have.
"Hey."
"Why aren't you with your family?" Uriah asks.
A guy slaps in in the back of the head. "Are you that stupid?" he says to Uriah. "Sorry about my brother, he likes to think without thinking."
"No, it's okay, I was just about to leave."
"Are you sure?" his brother asks. "We were going to spar if you want to join."
"Yeah, as a transfer, you would probably kill me in the first punch."
"Says the girl who punched me in the jaw. Man, my girl was jealous."
"Sorry about that."
"There is only one way I would forgive you."
Well shit. What is he going to say?
"I have been wanting to punch Urih here since the beginning of initiation but I wasn't allowed to talk to him. I would be very happy to see someone punch him."
"Really? Really Zeek?" Uriah sais.
"So…"
"Spar with him. I can give you some tips. Four's good but, I'll give you some insider tips."
"Are you sure? I don't want to ruen the one day you guys get together during initiation."
"Nah. We're waiting for the girls to get ready. Like how long does it take them to get ready?" Uriah asks.
I chukel. "All right."
"Yes!" they both say.
Uriah and I get on the mats and get ready to fight. Zeek walks around the mats allking at us.
Uriah is the first to make a move. He lunches at me and tries to punch my stomach. I doge by side stepping and he hits my side. I stand beside him and knee him just below his diaphragm.
He doubles over.
"Wup wup!." Zeek cheers from beside me.
Uriah glares at his brother and goes for another punch. It was well thought out, when I go to doge it, his foot is in my way and I fall.
I turn to land on my back and I feel Uraih's weight pinning me down.
"Good moves," Uriah says.
"If only Four taought you guys to not always use the same moves," Zeek comments.
Uriah gets up and gives me a hand to get up.
"Thanks."
"Any time. Wanna go again?" he asks, wiggling his eyebrow.
"Sure."
The next fight lasts a good five minutes. Both Uriah and I are going to have many bruises.
I end up winning that fight and we decide to take a break.
"Candor or Dauntless guys?" a group of three girls walk in. The older looking one I recognise to be the girl that Zeek was with when I punched him. Marlene and a bald girl I don't recognise.
"Hey girls!" Zeek calls out.
The girls come and join us, sitting on the mats.
"Girls this is Tris. Tris this is Lynn, Marlene and Shuana." Marlene sat between me and Uriah, Lynn between Zeek and Marlene. Shauna beside Zeek and me.
"You're the girl that punched Zeek!" Shauna shouts.
"Ya, sorry about that."
"What? Sorry?" Oh boy. "It was hilarious. He was telling everyone that he got it when he fell but someone was always there correcting him." Everyone laughs and he blushes.
"I'll start." Zeek says while everyone starts to stop laughing.
"Tris Candor or Dauntless?" Zeek asks.
"I don't want to move so Candor."
"Pansycake!" Uriah yells.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, watever." I say. I'm familiar with the insult of 'pansycake' . Honestly, it's an insult to the cake.
"Where did you transfer from?"
"Abnegation. Uriah, Dauntless?"
"Oh yeah!"
"Kiss your crush." he glares at me and I smile innocently.
"What are the rules this time?" he asks, looking at Zeek.
"Do it or no cake."
"Fine." He looks at Marlene and kisses her. When he pulls away, they both blush.
Uriah clears his throat. "Lynn?"
"Dauntless."
"Spar with Zeek."
"Hell no. I'm not about to kill myself. Shuana, Candor or Dauntless?"
"Candor."
"Who's your crush?"
"Pass. Marlene."
"Dauntless."
"Only get Uriah the vanilla cake for the next week."
"Sounds fun!" Uriah elbows her.
"Tris?"
"Candor."
"Is it true you punched Four?"
"Yes."
"Wait really?" Uriah aks.
"Yes."
"Nowonder you left the Stiffs," Zeek says.
"Couldn't get away fast enough," I say. "Shauna?"
"Dauntless."
"Play seven minutes in heaven with Zeek."
"Why him?"
"I know I wouldn't say Uriah, Marlene will kill you. And well, you and Zeek like eachother but don't want to admit it."
"You sure you chose the right faction? Erudite or Candor seem more like you."
"I wouldn't be able to survive there."
"Fine." Shauna and Zeek get up and go into the closet.
"We have been trying to get them together since their initiation," Uriah says.
"Neither one of them wants to admit that they like each other," Marlene chimes in.
In the seven minutes, we sit and talk about initiation. When the seven minutes are up, Shauna and Zeek come out looking very happy.
We keep playing for a while and the dares get worse and worse. The kissing and seven minutes in heaven seaming like a kids game.
"You know in all these years, I would have thought that you would know me." A woman's voice comes from the doors. We all look toward the voice and it's Natalie.
"Natalie?"
"And me! Don't forget me!" Matthew.
I stand up and run to him.
When I get there, I slap him. "You idiot. You can't just tell me 'you'll know sooner or later' and then fuking Jack tells me!"
"Ok, in my defence, he was going to kill me."
I roll my eyes. "Of course he would."
I realise that Zeek, Shauna, Lynn, Marlene, and Uriah are standing behind me. I turn around so that I'm facing them and Matthew puts a "protective" are around me. The only thing he could protect me from is a computer virus.
"Hey guys. Well, it seems that someone did visit me. This is Natalie and over here is Matthew."
"Hi." Natalie says.
"Are you dating one of them?" Matthew asks.
"What? No who do you think you are talking to? Jack would kill me over and over again if I so much as talked to a guy," they all start laughing
"Sorry."
"Don't worry."
"Wait if this Jack guy would kill you if you talked to a guy, what about him having his arm around you?" Uriah asks.
"This guy here, is his best friend and my friend for as long as I can remember."
"I have to go back but we wanted to give you something." He hands me a box. "They miss you."
I hug him. "Tell them I'm sorry."
"We are the ones that are sorry." he says with tears in his eyes.
We let go.
"I should go too, before Andrew tries to come here himself."
"Tell him I say hi."
"Will do. I'll see you soon. Oh and Zeek, tell your mom Natalie says hi." he gives her a questioning look. "Your mom, Hanna Perada. You're a spitting image of your father."
Perada? I thought they looked familiar.
"Bye Tris!" Matthew and Natalie call out as they walk away.
"Bey guys!"
I turn back to the group that was behind me.
"How does your mom know mine?" Zeek asks.
"Natalie was Dauntless born."
"Really? Why did she transfer?" Uriah asks.
"Her husband, Andrew, was Erudite. They met, fell in love and decided they would transfer to Abnegation since the initiation was so easy, they could spend the rest of their lives together."
"Cute story," Shuana says.
"Yeah." I always did think that the story of how Natalie and Andrew met was something you would read in a romance book. Helpless guy and smart girl. She saves him from failing and they fall in love, deciding to run away together. She tells him about her true past and he says 'I still love you, I will always love you'. Cute and all but, can't stand it if it happened to me.
"Let's continue the game shall we," Zeek says.
We continue the game until it's dinner time. I tell them to go ahead without me. I haven't had anything to eat all day but I'm not even close to being hungry. I decide to stay in the training room for a while to just think.
"I was wondering when they would finally go eat." Natalie says, entering the room.
"What are you still doing here?"
"I thought it was time we talked. Beatrice would have liked you. I told her stories about you and she thought you were the bravest person she would ever hear about. She wanted to pick Dauntless because of you. Andrew was terrified, not wanting his little girl to get hurt.
"When she did pass, he was furious. He wanted to kill someone, then you came along. You were younger than her, looked so different but no one noticed. When he first met you, he wanted you gone. One night, he was yelling at Caleb and you stood in front of him and wouldn't let him so much at him. You were up for days, staying in front of his door not letting him come close.
"It changed him. He found a part of Beatrise inside of you and he took you in as his own."
"I remember. But, I can tell that there is something you need to tell me that doesn't involve Caleb."
"You are right. David called. He's furious, you were supposed to go to Erudite."
"I know but I know he had no intention of bringing me back to the bureau and I would have failed initiation."
"However, he believes that it is because of your age that made you do such things."
"What?"
"You are about to turn fifteen soon. You would have been taking the test in two years."
"He thinks that my age made me do a reckless thing?"
"Yes. he's cutting you off."
"Makes sense."
"You're okay with this?"
"No but, as his second, I would have done the same."
"Okay. If ever you need something, i'm here."
"Thank you Natalie."
"There is one more thing I wanted to talk to you about."
"Oh?"
"I watched your training, you are doing well. Next time that Four tells you to go to the infirmary, it's not just for a stole, it's to make sure your body is not broken."
But it is. My genetics are messed up, I'm filled with scars, mental and physical. If I let someone see any of it, they're going to think that it's Natalie and Andrew's fault. I can't let that happen to them.
"There won't be a next time."
"I find that hard to believe." and with that, she leaves.
This was one hell of a Visiting day.
