Chapter 17

"What the hell, who the hell are you?"

"I guess you would like an explanation." She just keeps staring at me. "Your brother George Wu, is what you guys call Divergent. He 'committed suicide'," I say making air quotes, "it wasn't him. The guy that you found at the bottom of the chasm, he was a factionless man that died a few days before.

"Because you brother is Divergent, and you are not, it means only one of your parents are, right?" She doesn't move. "Tori, I need to know, were they both Divergent or not?"

"Why should I tell you? Are you working for Jeanian?"

"What? No. Technically she works for us, in a way."

"What?"

"I come from beyond the wall. I lived there for a few years. When Natalie's daughter passed, I was sent to replace her. It's my job to make sure that there is no war here. So I'm asking you again, Tori were both of your parents Divergent or not?"

"Yes."

"Yes what?"

"They were both Divergent."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Ok then, you got lucky."

"What do you mean I got lucky?"

"You are not divergent here but where I come from, you, your brother, Amar, you are all called GP. Genetically Pure. When there was the war, it was about your genes, if they are pure, that's good if you are not, you're what they call GD, genetically damaged. Which means that your genes are not right."

"Are you?"

"They say I'm GP, a Divergent. Tori, you need to understand what I'm about to tell you. I know that you have been a few years thinking that your brother is dead, and I know the feeling. But there is a war coming and it's not going to end well for anyone."

"So what are we supposed to do?"

"I need to know who is Divergent here."

"That's it?"

"Well, you do administer some of the tests so you would know a few people."

"I can get a list for you."

"Thanks. Could you still do the tattoo?"

"Yeah, for sure. Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"What is it like outside the wall?"

"Past the Amity fields, there isn't much. You'll only really see mountains and hills. But after a while, there's this big building. That building is the Bureau. Most people that either go missing or commit suicide, end up there thanks to people like me that wants to help you be safe."

"Is it safe for people who are not Divergent?"

"That's complicated. They prefer they think that the GD's should not be there, that they are infecting the genes of everyone that they meet. They can't get a good job either, sure they can get good one's but none that you are free to make your own choices. The GP's We all think they have it easier but they don't. If you are a GP, you need to have kids with another GP. So Amar and George, they keep quiet about their relationship because they can't bring another GP to the world together. Lucky for anyone here, you are the only ones that we have been able to save."

"When you said that you know the feeling of thinking my brother is dead, what do you mean?"

"I have a sister, she tried to commit suicide a few years ago. She learned an awful truth that everyone tried to hide from her and she couldn't handle it. I saw it happen on a camera. I was here and she was at the bureau. A friend took her and helped her. I decided that it was the best decision to erase the memory of learning the truth."

"How could you do that?"

"Because I have been living with so much regret and pain that I couldn't let her go through that."

"All done."

"What?"

"The tattoo. It's done."

Wow, that was quick. I was hoping to feel the pain of the needle. Guess not.

"Thanks." I go to give her my card.

"No. It's on me."

"You sure? I hacked the system so that I have the points."

"Yeah, I'm sure. And by the way, in Erudite we had a competition for who could hack the Dauntless point system."

"Oh wow."

"Ya, the thing is, no one has ever been able to do it."

"Really?"

"Yeah, for an entire three months, there was a team from the tech department and they weren't able to do it. You're here a few weeks and that's all it took?"

"Well, more like a few hours. I did it when I was supposed to be at the infirmary. All of the Dauntless systems are easy to hack except for their point system."

"If you come see me tomorrow, I'll have the list of names."

"Thank you Tori."

I wave goodbye and leave. I spot Christina and Will looking at each other's tattoos.

"Tris, you have to settle this for us, which is the better tattoo?" Will asks.

They each have a tattoo of the Dauntless symbol with their initial inside.

"I thought we said that we would get that together after initiation."

"Ya but they don't have any new designs," Christina protests.

"Okay. Will."

"What?" Will asks.

"Will's tattoo is the best."

"What!? Why?" Christina asks.

"His initials are inside the flames, your's are in the middle, his looks cooler."

"Ha, told you so," Will teases.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever, I'll have to teach her what cull really is."

'Help me' I mouth to Will, he just laughs. Great.

"It's getting late, we should head back now.," I say.

They both nod in agreement and we head back.

I can only hope that Tori gives me the list of names. It's not much, but it will give me an idea of how many GP's there are and if it's better just to take Jeanine down or just take whoever wants to come to the Bureau.
