Chapter 20

Recap:

"Tris" was sent by the Bureau after Beatrice's death to be their eyes and ears. She has helped many Divergent's to escape like Amar and George (who are now dating). Tori knows that her brother is alive and is getting a list of names of all the Divergents.

Four is suspicious of Tris and believes that it is the Beatrice that he knew back in Abnegation.

David cut ties with Tris and she is now on her own. She is now working with Jeanine and Eric to make the plan to take over Abnegation.

Tris had received a box from the people she knew in the Bureau.

During the capture the flag game, she got a message from her older brother and she is still not sure what she is supposed to do.

Finally! Jeanine has decided that she wants to see what I can do on a computer.

"Simple, find the mistake," Eric tells me. There is a huge code infront of me and well, all I need to do is find the mistake.

"Do you have a pen and paper?" I ask.

"Why would you need a pen and paper?" Jeanine askes.

"To do it," I say. Honesty, it's just to distract them, I know that there are no pens or paper anywhere in the building. Except for the libraries. That's the problem when your faction goes entirely digital.

"Sure." Eric and Jeanine both leave to go find what I asked for. This gives me time. I take the ring that I have on my right ring finger and find the slot in the back of the computer where it fits. When I do, I quickly get to what I need to do, I pull up my email and look for something from my brother.

After the coded message he sent me, I think I know that it is but I should be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. When I spot the email, I open it up.

Tobais

That's all that's written. That must be a mistake. It can't be.

I know it's something that happens in movies all the time, they say "oh it can't be" and then it is. But I can't explain the feeling. But I know it can't be good.

I then see a message from Matthew. I open the message.

So umm… random thing. I was running a test and umm… I don't know how to put this but umm… you have radiation poisoning.

I was feeling sick when I came to see you and when I got back, I ran some tests and Chicago is a hot spot. Everyone should be fine though because they have built up immunity for decades so they're fine. But you, you need to get back here. I know everything happening with David and all but you're going to die if you stay there too much longer.

And that was the end. I reply quickly as I only have a minute or two.

Matthew,

I can't, I have stuff to do here. If I come back now, I risk prison. No matter my age. I have broken too many laws for them to take me back. I'm sorry, I have to stay here.

Send.

I receive a reply all too quickly.

There is nothing you could have done that everyone would turn their backs on you. Everyone here loves you. Come back. Be with your family. What could you have done that would make everyone turn their backs to you?

And I quickly type back hoping I won't get caught.

I'm under age. I made a deal with David and it's off. I will never be able to get back.

Send.

I don't care! I need you. Very few people are loyal to David anymore. We don't agree with him but no one will stand up to him. We need you.

I hear Jeanine heal clicking on the tile and I close the tab, showing I'm now offline.

As she walks closer, I see her with a pen and a notebook.

"Perfect! Thank you so much, hope it wasn't too much trouble," I knew that it was a big problem.

She looks annoyed. "No problem at all." I can hear Eric rolling his eyes behind her.

She hands me the stuff and I get to the code.

As I look through it, I realise that it's not just any code, it's a fear landscape code. I note FLS on the paper indicating that it's a fear landscape simulation code.

I continue.

I see things like "gunn", "faceless", "high", "man", "closing", throughout the code. From it, I take it that this person has a fear of shooting a random person, of heights, of one persone in particular and something closing. Four fears. They gave me Four's fear landscape.

I know that there are pages and pages of just bla bla bla that are actually just there to confuse people so I scroll all the way to the bottom. And see one thing I would never miss.

1. Someone wrought this out and everyone has their own mark and this one is Amars.

2. Someone tried, horribly, to cover the fact that they were snooping in the code.

Because no one has been able to figure out that Amar did it, I can't let them know.

"Jeanine, do you know who uses the computer ending in 379?"

Because of the person who was snooping in the code, I was able to figure out the computer that uses it. Unfortunately, many people use computers so it's hard to tell who it was.

"Uhh, I'm not sure, why?" She asks, offended.

"Well, it seems that whoever uses that computer was trying to look into the code. That is the problem with the code. No mistakes, just a problem that can't be removed," I say as if I was saying that it was going to rain. "Anyway, I better head back to Dauntless soon or I'll miss dinner."

Jeanine looks like she is in complete shock and Erik grins. He leans over to Jeanine and says "I told you so." He then looks over to me and says "I'll give you a ride back."

I nod my head and follow him to the train. The train arrives almost as soon as we get there and we jump onto it.

Eric just started laughing.

"What?" I'm completely confused.

"I've never seen that look on her, she was in complete shock, I thought I was going to have to call the medical staff."

"Really?"

"Really." he sais completely seriously. "So… for being a Stiff you're pretty good with the computer. How?"

"I don't know, I just pick things up quickly, do whatever feels the best and do it." It's not that far off from the truth.

"Just wouldn't expect a stiff to be good with them that's all."

"Same with you, your last name Coulter, that's Erudite isn't it?"

"Ya," he said, scratching the back of his neck. "We just follow what the tests say."

"Well, most Dauntless are dating by your age, are you?" The Dauntless are know for dating and having kids at a young age so for a guy that follows the numbers, he should be dating as well.

"No, I take my job in leadership seriously."

"What?" I way with a chuckle. "You know that just because you're in a relationship, it doesn't make people feel any different about you, you could make some friends." Statistics do show that when you are in a relationship you tend to make new friends and live a happier life.

"They just distract you from your end goal."

"So what is your end goal?" Depending on what his end goal is or if he even has one, will hopefully explain why he has so few friends if he even has some.

"To get Max's job, he's retiring at the end of initiation and I'm going to get his job."

"Do you know why he wants to retire?" Well, this one has no explanation, I'm just curious.

"Wants to spend more time with his wife," he says as if I already knew.

"You, see, he would rather spend time with his wife than to be the leader of Dauntless. Ever hear of 'happy wife, happy life,'?" It's a saying that I have heard too many times.

"Ya, all women say that." It's true, I won't lie, women say it al ot.

"Just think of having someone to be there, it could be a man if you ever, but it doesn't matter, a good friend or significant other, you need a joy that isn't work or torturing initiits."

As I finish, we get to the Dauntless stop so I get up and jump off, letting Eric do whatever he needs to do to process that. If he thinks that he needs someone, he knows it now. If not, he can forget the entire conversation.
