#04: "It Shouldn't Take Too Long"

Taichi and Sora lived in a small, one bedroom apartment a few miles away from the university campus. Even though the apartment complex and the surrounding neighborhood was fairly quiet, Sora sometimes found herself paranoid at the fact that she and Taichi made too much noise, particularly when they walked through the hallway going in and out of their apartment.

That late afternoon was one of those times when they had returned from campus, and Sora's voice of irritation echoed in the previously quiet hallway.

"You didn't have to keep honking at him, Taichi!" she scolded.

"He did it first, Sora!" was Taichi's defense while he kept his keys swinging with his hand. "What else was I supposed to do after he cut me off?"

"You didn't have to scream in my ear and speed up, either, you know!"

"Well, it got us home faster," Taichi grumbled.

Sora sighed and waited for Taichi to open their apartment door and follow him inside. After taking their shoes off together in silence, Sora made her way to the kitchen out of habit and looked inside the fridge while Taichi took his phone out from his pocket.

"Looks like we've got leftovers from last night, Taichi," she announced. "Wanna warm them up? Or would you like me to cook something else?"

"Actually, why don't we go out for dinner?" Taichi replied. "My treat?"

Sora lifted her head over the refrigerator door to look at him. "Really?"

"Really." Taichi approached her, moving around the fridge to reach for her and pull her towards him with his arms around her waist. "You take care of me way more than you should."

"A big boy like you needs someone to look after him." Sora wrapped her arms around his neck and craned her neck to meet his eyes locked into hers.

"Can you let me take care of you tonight?"

With his lips smirking to the side and his eyes as big and brown like a pleading puppy, Sora found it hard to say no.

"If you insist," she said, smiling before leaning forward to kiss his lips. She heard him hum with approval when he returned her kiss, and when she pulled apart, she hoped there would be more of that later.

"I'll have to freshen up before we go," she added. "I don't want to wear what I wore walking around campus all day."

"I'll just fix my hair, then," said Taichi. "It shouldn't take too long."

Pulling the sliding door to her closet in her room, Sora browsed through her wardrobe. She knew that she wanted to wear something casual. A strapped sundress? No, the weather was getting cooler. Even if she wore a cardigan over the dress, her legs would get cold. What about a long-sleeved top? Nah - anywhere Taichi might take her would be crowded with university students and it might get hot and stuffy.

It felt like ages before she finally decided on a nice tank top with a cardigan to go over it, along with jeans and a pair of flats. Heels? Actually, the booties were fine - a good compromise for her clumsiness.

"Hey, Taichi?" she called out, throwing on a pair of flowery earrings and a necklace that she thought of wearing at the last minute, as she didn't want him to wait any longer than he might already have been. "Ready to go?"

It was then that Sora realized Taichi hadn't made any noise during all that time that she got herself dressed for the evening. At first, she thought it was due to her sheer focus on perfecting her casual date night wear, but as she approached the bathroom with the light shining into the hall through the half-opened door, she began to realize what Taichi was actually up to.

Her suspicion was confirmed when she opened the bathroom door wider. She discovered that he was not standing in front of the bathroom sink with his eyes stuck to the mirror while fixing his hair. Stepping further in, Sora faced the toilet where she found Taichi sitting with his eyes stuck on his phone and his finger scrolling through the screen.

"Taichi," she said sternly.

"Oh, hang on, babe- Hey!"

Sora swiped his phone from his hands, holding it up high in the air. Then, she turned around and walked out, knowing that Taichi was reaching for it out of desperation.

"I was catching up on my football!"

"And I thought I was the one holding us up," Sora said loudly outside the bathroom. "You didn't even touch your hair. Maybe we should stick to leftovers tonight after all."

Sora leaned back against the wall next to the bathroom with Taichi's phone now in her back pocket and her arms folded across her chest. She listened to the sounds of the water rushing and the faucet creaking as Taichi quietly turned them on and off.

Then, Taichi emerged looking pouty, either from not fixing his hair like he wanted to, or from Sora confiscating his phone. Either way, Sora stifled a laugh behind her straight face.

"Let's go. Is my hair okay like this?"

Sora giggled. "You're adorable, Taichi." She resisted her temptation to ruffle his hair with her fingers which she liked to do, but she knew it would make him self-conscious. Instead, she kissed his cheek, and after sharing a smile, they finally headed out to dinner.
