Chapter 3: Enjoying Shore Leave
It was 4:55 in Giad, and Athrun was sleeping soundly on his bed before his alarm clock reached 5:00 which set off its alarm and Athrun quickly woke up before he turned it off.
Athrun then stood off his bed as he stretched out his arms and took in a few deep breaths. He then changes into his workout clothes which consists of a white T-shirt and black shorts and sneakers.
Athrun then left his room and entered his own private gym room. The gym was big enough for several workout equipment, a treadmill, a cardio workout machine, an adjustable bench press, some dumbbells, a multifunction home gym, a punching bag, a salmon ladder, and a wall-mounted pull up bar, and finally there was a wall mirror in the end of the room.
To begin his workout, Athrun begins by doing a few stretches and begins his exercise routine.
First he begins by doing one hundred push ups on the floor.
"57…58…59…60…" Athrun counted.
After he was done with his push ups, he now begins doing sit ups on his adjustable bench.
"67…68…69…70…"
Next he was now doing 100 squats.
"77…78…79…80…"
Next he was doing 100 pull ups on his pull up bar.
"97…98…99…100…" Athrun counted before drops on the ground landing on his feet and hand before he sat up and rolled his shoulder. "Alright, that's it for my warm ups. Time for my real workout."
First he was lifting his dumbbells that weigh about 30 LB one at a time.
"1…2…3…4…5…" Athrun counted.
After he was done with his dumbbells, Athrun was now lying on the bench as he was doing bench presses using weights that weigh about 45 KG.
"21…22…23…24…25…"
Next he was now lifting weights using his multifunction home gym that weighed about 120LB.
"46…47…48…49…50!" Athrun said as he let the weights drop and then took a moment to breathe as he took shallow breaths.
Athrun then picks up his bottle of water and a towel to drink and wipe off the sweat off his body.
"So far 50 is still my best…Maybe I should increase the weights a bit." Athrun wonders out loud.
After taking a short break Athrun resumed his workout as he was jogging on the treadmill for about an hour. Then he was on his cardio workout machine for an hour as well.
Athrun then begins to use his salmon ladder as he begins to pull both himself and the bar up. Athrun stops mid-way in the ladder as he hears a knock on the door.
"Master Athrun, breakfast is ready." Said Teresa on the other side of the door.
"Okay. I'll be right there." Athrun tells her as he continues his way up on the ladder as Teresa leaves.
After arriving on the top of the ladder he pulls himself up and leans his waist on the bar before he drops on the ground feet and hand.
Athrun soon leaves the gym room as he wipes some sweat off of his body before he arrives at the dining room. Then he narrowed his eyes at the table as Frederica was seated on the table, but she was still in a daze and her hair was messy.
Frederica slightly opens her eyes when she notices Athrun has arrived.
"Oh…Good morning…Athrun…" Frederica greeted him before she yawned.
"Morning." Athrun said as he took a seat on the table. "So I guess you stayed up too late again?"
"Only…Only for a little bit…" Frederica mutters as she was having some trouble keeping her head up. "I swear…I only stayed up like in 1…or something…"
"Uh-huh." Athrun nodded as he wasn't convinced by that.
Teresa soon brought them their breakfast, Frederica's was pancakes with syrup.
"Here you go, Frederica. Your pancakes." The maid told her.
"Th-Thank you, Teresa…" Frederica mutters as she picks up her fork and begins to eat. "Delicious…"
"You shouldn't talk with your mouth full." Athrun told her.
"I-I know…" Frederica said with some food in her mouth, and Athrun sighed.
"Why do I even bother?" He mutters.
"Here you go, master Athrun." Teresa said as she placed Athrun's breakfast on the table. "You're usually yogurt with fruits along with wheat toast and egg on the top."
"Thanks, Teresa." Athrun told the maid before he began eating, starting with the yogurt as he used his spoon to scoop some out and ate it slowly enjoying its flavor. "Delicious as always."
"Thank you. I'm glad to hear that." Teresa said before she noticed that Frederica had some syrup on her face when she was eating her pancakes, which caused her to chuckle as she picked up a napkin and cleans Frederica's face with it. "Now, now, Frederica, you shouldn't leave a mess on your face like that."
"I know…" Frederica mutters.
Watching them, Athrun couldn't help but chuckle before he took a bite of his toast.
(Later)
After eating breakfast, Athrun took a shower and shortly after that, he returned to his room as he put on some casual clothes.
He then walks in front of his mirror before he picks up a black wig and puts it on to completely cover his silver hair. He then picks up a pair of sunglasses and puts them on to hide his silver eyes.
Teresa was cleaning the table as Athrun arrived in the dining room.
"Teresa." Athrun calls out as the maid turns to him.
"Oh, are you going out today?" Teresa asks as she notices Athrun's disguise as it wasn't the first time, she had seen him wearing it.
"Yeah, I am. It's been a while since I've been back in the city, so I wanted to enjoy the time I have here." Athrun said before he noticed that Frederica was missing. "By the way, where's…"
Teresa placed a finger in front of her lips and pointed at the couch, and Athrun turned to it and saw Frederica was sleeping on the couch.
"I swear that girl. Taking a nap after having breakfast." Athrun said before he turns around and walks away. "Anyway, I'm going out. Be sure to call me if you need anything."
"Of course. Have fun out there." Teresa said.
Athrun soon walks out of the house and walks on the road and heads to the city.
Athrun's first stop was a cafe as he walks to the door and opens it. In the cafe one of the waitresses heard the door opening as the bell rang.
"Welcome." She greeted as she turned to the door and saw it was Athrun. "Oh Alex, you're back."
The waitress was around his age and has shoulder length brown hair and matching eyes.
In his disguise, Athrun goes by the name Alex Kreuger.
"Hello, Sophia, it's been a while." Athrun greeted the waitress.
This cafe is Athrun's personal favorite and comes to visit to enjoy a good cup of coffee and a snack every chance he gets. He also knew the waitress, Sophia, since he first visited this place.
Sophia then brought Athrun to a table before he sat down on a chair.
"You sure have been gone for a long time. I was starting to worry about you." Sophia said.
"Yeah, but it's all part of the job." Athrun told her.
"I guess being a soldier isn't easy." Sophia said.
"It is. Which makes my visits here even more enjoyable, especially since I get to see you." Athrun told her and Sophia's cheeks turned a little red as she was surprised to hear that.
"O-Oh! I see…" Sophia said as she nervously chuckled before she coughed in her hand to calm down. "Anyway, what would it be today?"
"The usual please." Athrun requested and Sophia nodded.
"Of course. Coming right up." She said as she left.
As Athrun waited for his order he looked around at the area he was in and saw people walking around enjoying their days. Seeing those people laughing and smiling like that, Athrun couldn't help but smile.
Despite the war with the Legion, he was glad that the people here are still able to smile in peace.
Athrun then notices Sophia has returned holding a tray in her hand as she walks to Athrun.
"Here you go." Sophia said as he placed Athrun's order on his table. "One original house blend, with honey and cream with a large cream puff."
"Thank you." Athrun told her before she bowed her head and left.
Athrun picks up his cup of coffee to smell the aroma of it.
"Hmmm...It's just right." Athrun said before it down and poured the honey and cream in the coffee before he mixed them together with his spoon, and after that he took a sip of his coffee to slowly enjoy the flavor before he smiled. "Perfect as always."
Athrun then picks up his cream puff and bites onto it and enjoys the flavor of the cream and pastry. He may not look it, but he has a bit of a sweet tooth.
"Ah…Now that is good stuff." He mutters to himself.
After finishing his drink and snack, Athrun leaves the cafe as Sophia waves him goodbye.
"Thanks for coming, Alex. I hope to see you again soon." Sophia said.
"We'll see." Athrun tells her as he opens and walks out of the building before closing the door behind him.
Athrun then heads to his next destination.
For his next stop, Athrun soon arrives at a flower shop as he looks at it before he hears a cat meowing.
Athrun looks down and sees a cat beside his feet as it rubs its head on his leg. The cat is colored purely white with a blue collar around its neck along with a bell.
Athrun smirks before he knelt down and pets the cat which it enjoys.
"Oh, Mister Kreuger."
Athrun looked and saw a girl was looking at him and carrying a flowerpot in her hands.
The girl appeared to be 10 years old, wearing a blue dress and a green apron with a flower symbol on the top. She had long brown hair and silver eyes.
"It's good to see you again." The girl greeted him as Athrun stood up.
"Hello, Sarah, it's good to see you too. But I wish you would drop the mister already. I'm still 17, you know." Athrun told her.
"Oh, that's right. I'm sorry." Sarah said before she bowed her head, and Athrun smirked before he petted her on the head.
"There's no reason to apologize. Anyway, is your mother here?" Athrun asked and Sarah nodded.
"She is. I'll go get her." Sarah said before she ran inside the flower shop. "Mom! Kreuger's here!"
"I see. Thank you, Sarah."
Walking out of the room was a woman in her 30s, she was an Alba like Athrun, her hair reaching to her shoulders and was wearing a brown sweater with a black skirt and shoes.
"Hello, Alex. It's good to see you again." Sarah's mother greeted him.
"It's been a while, Anya." Athrun greeted her. "How's business lately?"
"Oh, you know, busy. Right now, I have an order of flowers for a wedding next month, so it's been a handful." Anya told him before she notices her daughter watering the plants before they wave and smile at each other. Anya then turns back to Athrun. "So what would be today?"
"The same as usual please." Athrun requested and she nodded in understanding.
"Alright, I'll be right back." Anya said as she walked back into the shop.
Athrun waited for a few minutes before Anya had returned with two roses in her hands.
"Here you go." Anya said before she handed him the roses as Athrun accepted them.
"Thank you." Athrun said before she hands her the money for the flowers.
"You're welcome. But Alex, there's something I've been meaning to ask. You've only ever requested the same number of roses every time, have you ever considered changing things up? Like different flowers or more?" Anya asked, and Athrun shook his head.
"That's very generous of you, but there's no reason to do that. Just two are perfect for me." Athrun said before he left. "Say hey, to your husband for me."
Anya had a worried look on her face as she watched him leave.
"Still, I hope you're doing alright."
With his two roses in hand, Athrun was walking to his next before he stops as he notices a poster on a wall as he looks at it.
It was a picture of several Knightmares line up next to each other pointed their lances forward and in front of them were the Federacy's Vanagandr.
Athrun looks down and sees his Lancelot on the bottom pointing its finger forward and has a speech bubble beside it, saying.
'The Federacy needs you!'
Athrun frowns to see that poster before he walks away.
Athrun soon arrived at his next stop, which was a destroyed manor as it was in ruins and on the wall that is front of the manor was a symbol of a lion, the same symbol that was on the shield in his room.
Athrun then walks onto the pathway that leads to the door and places one of the roses on the ground.
Then flashes of an injured man appeared in his mind as Athrun pointed a gun at him and the sound of it firing was weird. Athrun tightly clenched his hand before he relaxed it as he stood up and left.
Athrun next stop was a graveyard as he walks by a few graves before he stops at one certain grave as he looks at it.
The name on the grave was, 'Cagalli Kreuger'.
Athrun knelt down at the grave as he placed the rose in front of the grave and paid his respects. Then flashes of a girl reaching her hand out to him and remembers her crying face as she was tied on a pole as guns were pointed at her and her family.
Athrun's eyes flinch when he remembers that memory and taking a moment to take off his glasses rubs his fingers on his eyes.
"Oh, well if it isn't Alex."
Athrun put his glasses on and turned to the grave keeper as he was looking at him.
"It's been a while, lad." He greeted him as Athrun stood up.
"Yeah, it has been, Mr. Kenith." Athrun greeted the grave keep. "I'm glad you're doing well."
"Same with you." Kenith said before he turned to the grave. "Visiting your cousin again?"
"Yeah." Athrun mutters as he sadly looks at the grave, and the grave keeper looks at him in sympathy.
"Alex, I know you miss her, but it has been four years already. Maybe it's about time for you to move on. I'm sure Cagalli would've told you the same thing." Kenith told him.
Athrun was in deep thought about it.
"Yeah, maybe…But I want to make sure to at least visit her every chance I have." Athrun told him before he left.
"I swear that boy. He carries too many burdens for his own good." Kenith sighed as he shook his head.
Athrun was walking around the town for a while as he wondered where to go next.
"Let us save our oppressed comrades!"
"Save them!"
"The Eighty-Six are victims!"
"Victims!"
Athrun stopped as he saw a large group of people had gathered around and standing in front of a few people on a makeshift stage. He spotted a few Alba with them as some of them were holding banners in their hands, and Athrun then spotted the large banner on top of the stage.
'Save the Eighty-Six!'
"Huh? Guess it didn't take long for the word to get out." Athrun said.
"With you on that, commander." Said a man standing beside him.
Athrun turns to him and recognizes him.
He appeared to be in his 20s with spiky blond hair and gray eyes. He was wearing a black jacket with a gray shirt and black pants and brown shoes.
This is Conner Hawkeye, K-7, the sniper of the Knightmare Squad.
"Conner. I suppose you're responsible for this?" Athrun asked.
"Huh…No…Come on, sir, you know I'm not one to let info like that out of the open." Conner said as he waved his hands.
"Hm-hm…Sure you are." Athrun said as he wasn't convinced by that, Conner nervously chuckles.
"So…Still wearing that disguise I see." Conner said.
"You know why. It's hard for me to move around since everyone can recognize me." Athrun told him.
"Guess I can't argue about that." Conner said.
"Let us follow our hero's example!"
"His example!"
Hearing that caused Athrun to look back at the crowd.
"He saved the Eighty-Six!"
"He saved them!"
"Together we'll save the Eighty-Six!"
"We'll save them!"
Athrun turns to Conner with a dark look as the sniper nervously waves his hands.
"Hey, don't look at me! I didn't say anything…Maybe…Probably…" Conner said.
Just as Athrun was about to say something to him, he heard his phone ringing, he then brought it out and saw that Teresa had sent him a text, requesting him to bring back some groceries for dinner.
"You…" Athrun said to his subordinate as Conner shakes in fear. "Got lucky."
Conner looks at his commanding officer as Athrun puts away his phone.
"I have to do some errands. But we're going to have a talk about this later, clear?!" Athrun asked.
"Crystal, sir!" Conner said as he saluted.
Athrun then leaves as Conner sighed in relief.
"Man…I know he hates being the center of attention, but isn't that going a little too far?" He mutters to himself as he watches Athrun leave.
(Later)
After picking up the things Teresa had requested, Athrun soon returns to the house as he opens the door and walks inside.
"I'm back!" Athrun calls out as Teresa has arrived to greet him.
"Welcome back, master Athrun."
Athrun then hands her the bags of groceries.
"Here are the things you've asked for." Athrun said as Teresa grabbed onto them.
"Thank you, and I'm sorry you had to do that." Teresa said.
"It's alright. I'm glad I was able to help." Athrun said.
"Well, in any case, I'm going to start cooking dinner." Teresa said before she heads to the kitchen, but then she stops and looks at Athrun.
"Also, Ernst had called saying he wants to talk to you. He said it's important." She told him.
"Really? Alright, thanks for letting me know." Athrun said before she leaves.
After taking off his disguise, Athrun had soon arrived in the living room and headed to the phone and picked it up and entered Ernst's number to call him. After a few rings, Ernst answered his call.
"Hello? Who is this?" Ernst asked.
"You know who. Teresa told me that you wanted to talk." Athrun said and Ernst chuckled in amusement. Athrun sighed. "Anyway, what is it?"
"I have some good news. That Shinei boy finally woke up." Ernst told him and Athrun was surprised to hear that.
"Really?" Athrun asked and he could imagine Ernst nodded. "Well, that's a relief to hear. So, what are we going to do with them now? I highly doubt we can keep them in a lab forever."
"Funny you should mention that. I've already got a plan in mind." Ernst said, and Athrun had a narrow look on his face as he could already tell that it's going to be something that's completely crazy and probably a little stupid.
"Which is?" He asks as he imagines Ernst giving him a sly smirk before he explains. "What?! You're going to give them full citizenship and bring them here to live with us?!"
"That's right. Are you really that surprised?" Ernst asked.
"I...You know what you're right, I guess I shouldn't be surprised you'll come up with a crazy idea like that." Athrun said as he could hear Ernst chuckling at him. "Well, in anycase, what about me?"
"Hmmm? What about you?" Ernst asked in confusion.
"You know what I mean." Athrun said with an annoyed tone. "You said it yourself, they won't take kindly to me because of my Alba heritage."
"Oh yeah…That's right. Completely slipped my mind." Ernst said before he nervously chuckles.
"Yeah right…" Athrun mutters as he wasn't convinced by that. "If you want, I can wear my disguise or move into an apartment that's close by."
"That won't be necessary." Ernst told him and Athrun blinks to hear that. "If they're going to live in a new environment here, then they'll have to learn to be a little tolerant living with an Alba, given there's a few here living with colored citizens. Lucky for us, you're the perfect example of that."
"What?!" Athrun asked in shock. "You can't possibly be seri-"
"Well, anyway, I need to go and fill out some paperwork. Be sure to tell Teresa and Frederica what I have planned. Toodles." Ernst told him.
"Don't you dare hang up the…" Athrun started before he heard a click and a ringing sound. "...Phone."
Athrun then looks at the phone in annoyance as his eyebrow twitches, before he sighed and placed his other hand on his face.
"I swear…He's just as selfish as ever." He mutters to himself.
Teresa had soon arrived as she walked into the living room.
"Master Athrun, dinner is almost…" Teresa said and stopped as she noticed the state he was in. "Is there something wrong?
Athrun sighed before he put the phone down and turned to the maid.
"Well…We're going to be having some new company joining us." Athrun told her.
To Be Continued…
