Carina rushed to the hospital in record time and saw Andy sitting in the waiting area. A thousand questions were going through her head: Would she make it? What had happened? Did it happen because she didn't have her head in the game?

"Andy, what happened?"

Maya's friend told her all she knew, while they anxiously waited for someone to tell them what was going on. Carina was holding her head in her hands when Andy tapped her on the shoulder. Dr. Bailey was approaching them. "Dr. DeLuca, Herrera."

"How is she?"

"She is stable. Her CT shows no internal bleeding or spinal injury. She has a moderate concussion but there are no signs of a brain bleed. She has broken her clavicle, dislocated her shoulder and her ulna and radius are broken on her right side. She was lucky though that the pipe didn't hit the middle of her body and her head."

Carina and Andy breathed a sigh of relief but Carina could see that Bailey was holding something back.

"What aren't you saying?"

"Well, we are a bit worried because she is still unconscious. Even in spite of the concussion none of her injuries explain that."

"So why do you think she hasn't woken up yet?", Andy asked worriedly. Carina on the other hand had a hunch as to what was going on.

"Her hear rate is still too slow and the blood pressure is low, too. It's hard not to notice that she is pretty underweight, especially when taking into consideration what her usual build is."

Carina looked at Bailey knowingly and nodded at her.

"I haven't been able to have a rational conversation with her yet but it has become pretty obvious that she struggles with an eating disorder. She is restricting and I've seen her purge, too."

"That's what I had in mind, too but that definitely rules out a physical reason for her weight loss. Her body is quite weak right now, even apart from the injuries. Her blood work should come back soon and I expect to see some deficiencies. She might need surgery for the broken bones but I want to wait until she wakes up because we can't completely rule out a head injury until she does. We will continue monitoring her. We started giving her fluids and pain medication. Let's hope that she wakes up soon, I'd really like to avoid a feeding tube with the psychological component." Carina nodded, Maya would surely freak out having this little control.

"Can I see her?"

"Yeah, sure."

Dr. Bailey rubbed Carina's back as they were standing in the door of Maya's room. Due to COVID, Carina being there was already an exception and Andy went back to the station, knowing that her friend wasn't in immediate danger and was being cared for. Carina tried to stop herself from crying as tears threatened to fall.

"She's gonna be fine, DeLuca.", Bailey tried to comfort her.

"I'm just scared because they last time we spoke, we fought and she is so deep in denial and she was really angry."

"I know that this is hard but all we can do is try to make her see."

Carina went inside and sat down on a chair next to Maya's bed. The c-collar was still on as a precautionary measure until she woke up. Her right arm was in a sling and pinned to her body. Laying there in the hospital bed, Carina thought that Maya looked even more fragile and sickly skinny. Three hours passed without Maya regaining consciousness, she was then taken for x-rays in order to assess the treatment for her fractures. Carina kept Andy in the loop and told her that there was no change. It was now almost 6 am, Carina's shift would start in two hours; she contemplated working but came to the conclusion that she had to be there for Maya when she woke up. She had done a ton of research about eating disorders and had read that family's and friend's support was crucial to recovery. She was about to look for Bailey, to tell her that she needed some time off but she beat her to it when she approached Carina: "I've called in the OB on call, they will take over your shift."

"I... thank you."

"No problem, you can take off as much time as you need."

Carina smiled appreciatively. A few minutes later Maya was wheeled back in. Carina eventually dozed off; after all she had come here in the middle of the night.

"No, no. I don't want that. No, please stop."

Maya was looking distressed and moved her left arm towards her head and the c-collar.

"Maya, wake up. You're safe. Maya it's Carina. It's just a nightmare, Bella."

Maya opened her eyes, still not quite realising where she was.

"That's it, Bambina.", Carina soothed, stroking Maya's short blond hair.

"Carina, what happened?"

"You were injured on a call."

Hazy images flooded Maya's brain.

"Yeah, I remember now. There was so much smoke, we... we didn't know where it was coming from."

"Shhh, it's okay.", Carina stopped her as Maya got worked up. Carina had pushed the call button and Dr. Bailey came in.

"Captain Bishop, it's good to see you awake. Now I'm sure you want to get rid of that c-collar."

Dr. Bailey cleared her c-spine and checked her over. Maya winced when she shone the flashlight in her eyes.

"I know, sorry. You have a moderate concussion."

Maya nodded slowly.

"Other than that, you have a broken clavicle, dislocated your shoulder and you've broken your ulna and radius. Luckily you don't need surgery for any of that but we still have to pop your shoulder back in. Someone from ortho is coming down, soon."

Dr. Bailey shot a glance to Carina who nodded as she took Maya's left hand.

"There's is something else that is not connected to your injuries.", Dr. Bailey started slowly, Maya's gaze immediately dropped, "your heart rate is too slow and your blood pressure is low, too. This is a symptom of you being quite a bit underweight."

Maya continued to stare down.

"Maya", Dr. Bailey said, causing Maya to look up; they weren't exactly on a first name basis, "I believe that you are aware of what's going on. I know from personal experience how hard it is to admit that you need help for a mental illness and you might feel like you are alone and it's never going to get better but that's not true. Eating disorders are serious, I'm going to have to be bold right now: Your body is already in survival mode, you have to change something and you have to take the first step, no matter how hard it seems."

No one spoke for some time, Carina hardly dared to breathe. And then Maya finally looked into Carina's concerned and loving face.

"I...", she physically struggled to speak as a sob was wrecking her body.

"I... just can't... do this anymore.", she broke down and started to hyperventilate. Carina embraced her in a careful hug and held her close. "It's okay. I've got you. You're gonna be just fine. Please trust me, I'm here for you.", Carina whispered reassuringly as tears started spilling down her face, too. She soon switched to Italian and continued to whisper sweet reassurances, just holding her. Dr. Bailey had left when Maya broke down, knowing that they needed some privacy.
