As soon as the doctors leave the room, Hondo approaches Street.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" Hondo asks him.
Street doesn't answer, right now he only cares about Chris. "What happened to Chris? Why is he here? "
Hondo looks him in the eye, he specifically chose to stay with them, as he had to be the one to explain to Street what had happened.
He clears his throat "Street, during the surgery you underwent, the doctors found that your liver was gone." He pauses. "You needed a transplant to survive and Chris was compatible"
"What happened Hondo? Why isn't she awake? " Street asks visibly shaken, his eyes full of tears.
"He had an embolus during the surgery, but it was removed. Now we just have to wait "concludes Hondo
"Let me up" says Street "don't talk about it Jim!" Hondo stops him. "I'll be right there. Don't worry and don't be a child "she scolds him and walks off into the corridor.
Street can't help but admire Chris, the strongest and most stubborn woman he has ever known, who has stolen his soul and her body from the first meeting. She cannot believe that she is now helpless in a hospital bed, attached to a respirator because of her. Her love of her life, which put her life at risk for him.
The whirlwind of thoughts that runs through his head is interrupted by the return of Hondo with two nurses following.
"I warned you that he was going to be a bad patient," Hondo tells the two nurses
"Mr. Street, don't worry. The Sergeant told us he wants to get up. He's out of the question, he could blow the points!" The nurse scolds him
"Let's do this, I move the IV to the other side along with the monitoring, and we bring his bed closer to that of Mrs. Alonso. Okay?" Organize the other nurse.
"I tell her, however, that she must rest, and now we are giving her a medicine that will help her sleep" she tells him
"no, please" Street replies, unable to mask the pain from the injuries, "I want to stay lucid until Chris wakes up" continues
"Mr. Street, it is not an option, we can see how he is suffering, and we must relieve him so as not to tire his heart and lungs" replies the nurse
"Street, listen to the nurses, I will be here as soon as Chris wakes up, I promise you that I will decrease the dose of painkillers so you can see her and talk to her. I imagine how important this is to you, to you. But more important is that you both recover as best you can. Okay? " Hondo reassured him.
"ok" Street replied, he knows there is little he can do right now, nods to the nurses, and seconds later his eyes close, and his thoughts are fixed on Chris.
Hondo settles back into the chair he moved over to Chris's side.
He approaches her and takes her hand "Come on Chris, go back to him, I don't know if you've heard what he just did, and I don't dare imagine what he can do when he's less sore." Hondo smiles at the thought of assisting a restless, enamored Street. Not that he hasn't already seen both of them argue, but he has a feeling that this time around he will be distinctly different.
"Chris, he'd be lost if you didn't wake up, he wouldn't recover without you." He pauses for a moment to hold back the tears, at the thought of losing both of them, "no matter how much you both hid your feelings, your beautiful connection is visible to everyone, how much you love each other"
Hondo does not know that Chris is awake, she did not want to open her eyes on purpose, to take a few seconds to understand what had happened. She feels Hondo's tears falling on her hand, and decides it's time to shake Hondo's hand, to let him know she's awake.
Hondo immediately looks up and meets his, "you're awake!" She stands up abruptly "keep calm, I'm going to call the doctors, so they'll take that tube out of you"
Chris can't speak, but close his eyes to let Hondo know she understood and points to Street to find out how she is.
Hondo smiles "he's fine, they put him back asleep because he was freaking out for you!" She rolls her eyes, she expected nothing less from Street.
Chris sees that their beds are very close together, she starts to take his hand but can't.
Hondo exits the room and soon returns with Jack and a nurse.
"Hey Chris, welcome back" the doctor tells her, "now we extubate you so you can talk. Take a deep breath" the doctor pulls the tube from her throat, and Chris coughs.
Meanwhile the nurse is handling Street's IV, she has started tapering off the painkillers to wake him up.
"ok Chris, your surgery went well overall, you had a complication, a carotid embolus, which we promptly removed. Even if you worried us for a few minutes." Jack tells her
"how is he?" Chris asks him,
"he is fine, in fact more than fine, since he has already almost blown the points to get up and come to you!" The doctor tells her.
Chris smiles, and blushes with embarrassment "when will he wake up?"
"The nurse has already tapered off the medicine, she should wake up shortly." Jack replies
"Thanks Jack, for everything." Chris says, and the doctor smiles at her, before leaving the room.
Chris clears his throat "Hondo, can you approach Street's hand?"
"sure, maybe hearing your contact she might wake up earlier"
"Hondo, I've heard your words before, thank you so much for your support."
"Chris we are family,"
After taking her hand, Chris squeezes it, "Hey sleeper, it's time to wake up."
No reply.
She smiles, Chris knows how much Street likes to sleep, she needs something stronger.
He takes her hand and brings it to her mouth, starts kissing her.
Hondo enjoys the whole scene from his chair, smiling. Who would have thought that Christina Alonso was so sweet and romantic? But he has no intention of saying anything, he leaves it to Tan and Luca to make fun of them for the next few years.
