Sharon woke to the sound her phone ringing in the living room where she'd left it.
Sharon climbed out of bed careful not to wake Andy. She pulled her night gown on and a robe over it.
The phone stopped ringing and then alerted her to a new text message.
Chief Pope: I'm outside your condo door. I NEED TO TALK TO YOU.
She quickly gather up the clothes scattered on the floor. She hid them under a couch throw pillow and pulled her robe tight we around her before she opened the door to an angry Will Pope.
"Chief Pope," Sharon crossed her arms. "What are you doing here so late?"
"I need to file a complaint." He said irritated. "Can I come in?"
"Yes," Sharon nodded and stepped aside. She glanced down the hall where Andy was sleeping. "Who are you filing a complaint on?"
"Brenda." He rolled his eyes walking past her. The more he talked the louder he got. "She does what she wants when she wants with not fear of repercussions. She undermines my authority. She has become a monster. I just can't go on protecting her."
"With all do respect," Sharon closed her door trying to keep her voice calm. "You made her the "monster" she is today."
"I know." He groaned. "But you would think the lawsuit would have opened her eyes, but it hasn't. She's worse because of it."
"Maybe you should think about this after you've had a chance to calm down." She suggested. "Really think about it."
"I've been brewing on this for hours." He shot her an angry look. His voice rose. "As an IA officer you are required to file any complaint that comes to you! I came to you and that's what I expect you to do!"
"You will not take that tone with me." She narrowed her eyes at him. She was sure his loud voice had woken Andy. "You may be The Chief, but I haven't done anything to warrant this rude and disrespectful behavior. No you can either calm down or you can leave."
"You're right." He seemed calmer. "I'm sorry."
"I'll give you a complaint form to fill out," Sharon motioned towards her desk and for him to sit in her desk chair. "But if you do this then there is no going back. There's no way I can make it just go away."
"Did I interrupt something?" Pope asked as she leaned close reaching into her desk drawer for a complaint file.
"My beauty sleep," Sharon frowned. "Why?"
"You're glowing," He leaned closer. "And your perfume smells mixed with men's cologne."
"Lotion and anti age cream." Sharon shrugged him off and stood up placing the paper on the desk. "Here."
Chief Pope eagerly wrote down his concerns for Brenda's lack of comprehension of authority. Just as he was about to sign it Sharon put her hand over the line.
"If you sign this," She reminded him. "There is no going back."
"What do you want me to do?" He sighed. "She doesn't listen to me."
"Let me talk to her." She suggested. "I think I can get her to see your side."
"You?" He half laughed.
"She might be more prone to listen to me then you since you're filing the complaint and I'm not." She crossed her arms. "She knows I was on her side with her running for chief of police, the audit, the lawsuit, and the Johnson Rule. I've been backing her when you haven't. She trusts me."
"Fine." He sighed. "I won't sign it yet, but you need to make her understand how serious this is. How she works this investigation with determine if this gets my signature or not."
"I will." Sharon took the paper from him and walked him back to her door. She tucked the paper into her purse. "Now if you don't mind, I'd like to get back to my beauty sleep."
"You've never needed beauty sleep, Sharon." Will ran the back of his hand along her cheek.
"Goodnight, Will." Sharon opened the door.
"Goodnight, Captain." Will walked out. "Have fun."
Sharon shut the door. She turned and came face to face with Andy.
"You and Pope?" He asked with a frown. "When did this happen?"
"It was after the Moore case." Sharon felt her face heat up from embarrassment. "I was in a bad place. He comforted me. One thing led to another . . ."
"I can't believe I fell for her act." Sharon said disgusted with herself as she paced Chief Pope's office. Her hands shook from anger. "She played me like a fiddle."
"You caught her." Chief Pope caught her and stopped her pacing. "You put her where she belongs."
"But a man is dead." She shook head feeling tears welling up. "Because I believed her."
"Sharon," Chief Pope used her first name and cupped her face. "It wasn't your fault."
"Wasn't it, Will?" She asked him. She'd told herself it wasn't, but she needed someone else to say it. She felt her tears burning her cheeks. "Shouldn't I have done more?"
"No," Will wiped them away with his thumbs. "It wasn't your fault. You did what you were trained to do."
Sharon closed her eyes to let his words sink in, but then she felt his lips against hers. There was something comforting in the kiss making her want more.
Sharon kissed him back. The kiss was slow, but soon deepened. She felt him move them towards a nearby chair while the kiss deepened. His tongue slipped into her mouth. His hands sank into her hair. Sharon tilted her head. He fell down into the chair and she straddled his lap. Her arms circled his neck.
They kissed until kissing wasn't enough. Then his hands moved down her body and began to unbutton her shirt, but someone knocked on his door.
Sharon jumped off his lap rebuttoning her blouse and trying to tame her hair.
"Who is it!?!" Will said angrily making even Sharon slightly jump. Will stood and rounded his desk to his own chair.
"Commander Taylor," Commander Taylor opened the door slowly as if afraid of what might be thrown at him. He looked at Sharon then at Will. "I needed your signature on something."
Commander Taylor hurried over to Will's desk. His eyes darted back to Sharon then to Will again nervously. She began to worry she'd missed a button or her hair was a mess.
"There." Will tossed the papers back to him. "Now go so I can finish my meeting with Captain Raydor."
"Chief Pope if you don't mind me saying Captain Raydor was only doing her job and would have had no idea Moore was planning on using her statement to prove self defense." Commander Taylor looked at Sharon as if reassuring her. "I probably would have acted the same in her situation."
"Thank you for your input." Will crossed his arms.
Commander Taylor hurried out of the room and shut the door behind himself.
Sharon looked at Will. She'd refused to meet his eyes until now.
"Sharon," He sighed. "What just happened . . ."
"Was a mistake." She shook her head and made her way to the door. "Have a good evening, Chief."
"So you two never . . ." Andy insinuated.
"Not that it's any of your business," Sharon pushed past him. "No, we never had sex."
"I know it's not my business." He sighed catching her hand and working her around to face him. "You're no more my property then you are any other man's property."
"You're right. I'm not." She wrapped her arms around his neck. "You're jealous?"
"Yes." Andy admitted. "You know that's more against the rules then this."
"I know." She rolled her eyes. "Why do we keep doing this? We almost got caught."
"Because you can't resist me." He kissed along her neck. "And I can't resist you."
"This has to be the last time." She insisted, but knew her words were empty.
"Then let's make it good." He picked her up and carried her back to her bedroom.
