Several hours later, Logan woke up to a small bit of turbulence. It wasn't much - just a few bumps but it was enough to jolt him awake. He looked down at Rory sleeping on his chest. While she was asleep, she had managed to curl up into almost the fetal position. This woman was his whole world. He was positive that she was his whole world, but he was also positive that she had no idea how important she was to him. Logan decided then and there that he was going to figure this out. If they were having a child together, the baby would not born into a world where their mother was constantly unsure about their father's feelings. He grew up knowing that his parents were indifferent to each other on their best day and loathed each other the rest of the time. It wasn't fun and didn't create a sense of warmth and love.
He also knew that they had so much to talk about and decide. For starters, was she going to wake up and have completely changed her mind? Was she going to think that he only wanted her because she was pregnant? (Even though he already told her he loved her before he knew.) Was she finally willing to be with him only because of the pregnancy? And if she lost the baby, was she going to immediately be done with him? Currently, she lived in Connecticut, and he lived in London. How was THAT going to work? Ugh! If they didn't stay together, co-parenting across an ocean would suck. There was SO much to think about. Then there was this little human being who was going to be appearing in about seven months. And Logan knew that he would be responsible for the child. Of course, he would. It wasn't the financial aspect of the task; it was the morality and the 'becoming-a-good-person' part of the task. How was HE, Logan Huntzberger, going to impart values and morals to someone else when he always felt completely devoid of them himself? He took a deep breath then leaned forward and kissed her forehead. He wanted this for so long; he had to make sure that he didn't screw it up. And he had to figure out how to keep her from talking herself out of freaking out because of her Rory-isms.
The sun was starting to come up, and he could see the horizon peeking through the clouds. No matter what happened once the flight landed, he got to spend one more night with his beautiful girl in his arms – something more than he ever dreamed was possible. The plane went through a little more turbulence and this time it woke up Rory as well. She lifted her head and looked up at him through her lashes.
"Hey," he said softly.
"Hi." She kissed him on the cheek. "I had the craziest dream..."
"Yeah?" he asked.
"Yeah," she replied. "I dreamed that I got on a flight in Hartford and slept a while. Then you got on the same plane in JFK. And we finally got to talk."
He nodded. "You still okay with all of this? We talked about a LOT last night."
"Yeah, we did," she whispered. She slipped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. He hugged her tightly and kissed her temple.
Once the flight landed, they collected their things and headed for the jetway. Logan grabbed his phone and arranged transportation, while they headed for baggage claim.
"Do you still want me to stay with you?" she asked.
He just stared at her. "Of course! You weren't thinking of going to a hotel, were you?"
"Well, I do have a reservation," she reasoned. "And I don't want to impose."
"Absolutely not. You're coming home with me." He said with conviction. He put his arm around her waist while he dragged her rolling suitcase behind them in his other hand.
"Ok," she said quietly. Logan's driver met them outside after they grabbed her luggage from the carousel. The decided to go to breakfast instead of directly to Logan's.
They both ordered and then sat there, silently. They talked a little about her meeting with Time Out the following day and then were silent again.
"So how are you feeling?" Logan asked softly.
"I'm really, really tired. And sometimes I have morning sickness, but otherwise I'm good." She smiled. "Oh, and apparently I was a real treat to live with during the caffeine withdrawal – because as soon as I found out I gave up caffeine." He raised his eyebrows at her remark. "But that's mostly over now."
He chuckled. "Good to know. Any chance you cursed me lower than a dog, because of the lack of coffee?"
She grinned. "Maaaayyyy -be," she replied as she drew out her answer. As he took a sip of his water, she asked "So were you serious about still wanting to marry me?"
With that question, the ever composed and smooth Logan proceeded to spit water all over the table in his surprise. "What?!"
"Just curious. Besides, now we're almost even - after all, I did have to give up caffeine." She smirked at him.
"You really are heartless, Gilmore!" He said as he wiped his mouth and most of the table. She giggled and shrugged.
He sat up a little straighter. "So, how many people know about this?"
"Um, counting you? Four." She replied while sipping her herbal tea.
"Is it a secret?" he asked?
She shook her head. "Not anymore. I wanted you to know before the rest of the world, for sure. But sometimes people wait until they are done with the first trimester to tell people, just incase something happens."
He nodded. "That makes sense, I guess."
"But there are a few people I want to tell, before they find out elsewhere," she reasoned.
"Anyone I know?" he asked.
"Yeah, my grandma, my dad, Lane, Paris and Luke," she replied. "Those are literally the only people I want to tell myself. Who did you think I meant?"
He shrugged. "I'm not sure. Do you mind if I tell anyone?"
"No, I guess not, as long as it doesn't get back to my family before I tell them myself." She searched his face for doubt – and found none. "You really seem happy about this." She furrowed her brow as she looked at him, trying to make sense of everything.
He smiled at her, "I'll admit, it's a huge surprise but I'm okay with it." He reached for her hand over the table. "We'll figure it out." She winced at the prospect. "Ace, we're 32 and 34 years old and have Ivy-league educations. We CAN figure this out." He squeezed her hand as their eyes met.
Just then, the server brought their food. Logan smiled because Rory's pregnant appetite was double what it normally was, which was impressive all by itself. She had ordered most of the breakfast menu including milk, juice, fruit and tea. Logan had NEVER seen her drink juice before that didn't have champagne or vodka mixed in.
They ate breakfast and talked about nothing – mostly the rain and fog in London, and how it was getting so much colder. She shared her omelet with him and he shared his pancakes with her.
After the check was paid and they were about to leave, she said, "Oh! I almost forgot." Then she reached in her bag and pulled out an envelope. "This is for you," she said as she handed it to him. He accepted the envelope and looked at her with raised eyebrows. "Open it," she said softly.
He opened the flap of the envelope and removed the contents. His eyes were wide, and his mouth fell open slightly. He flipped through six different sonogram photos. "Is this what I think it is?" He looked at her with tears in his eyes. She nodded slowly. Finally, he laughed a little and said, "So, I know what I'm looking at, but I don't really KNOW what I'm looking at."
She laughed at his admission and nodded in agreement. "Same here. The doctor pointed out things, but so far I see a fuzzy blob."
He grabbed her hand and asked, "Are you both healthy so far?" He was suddenly very concerned, almost panicked.
She nodded again. "Yep. Both fine."
"Good."
Logan began to hand her back the images and she shook her head. "No, those are your copies. I seriously didn't know how any of this was going to go, so I wanted you to have your own copies."
Their eyes met and he said, "Thank you." He took both of her hands in his. "It's the most beautiful little blob ever."
Her eyes teared up as she nodded in agreement. "Can we go?"
Once they were at Logan's flat, the driver placed the luggage in the foyer and said goodbye. Before he left, Logan arranged for the driver to take Rory to her meeting the following day. As soon as the door closed, Logan grabbed her and pressed her against the wall. His mouth was on hers like a magnet. "Finally alone..." he murmured in between kisses. His hands cupped her face as he kissed her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and pulled his body flush against her. He moved to kiss her ear and then her neck, while she leaned into his shoulder and inhaled his scent. He slid his arm inside her coat and around her waist. "You feel so good against me," he whispered.
They were disturbed by a knock at the door. "Ugh!" Rory was exasperated. "Oh well, I need something to drink anyway," she said as she moved away from the door.
"Make yourself at home," he said as she left the foyer. He dropped a kiss on her cheek as she passed by him.
Logan opened the door to find Mitchum standing on the other side. "Good morning," he said to his father.
"Logan. Do you have a few minutes?" Mitchum asked with a long look on his face.
"Sure, Dad. Come on in." Logan stepped to the side and his father walked past him. They both took off their coats and Logan hung them.
Mitchum spied the luggage in the foyer and asked, "Are you on your way somewhere?" Logan shook his head and started to answer. But then Mitchum figured it out. "You have a guest?"
"Yeah. Rory's here." Logan replied.
"Rory Gilmore is here? HERE? Staying in your apartment?" Mitchum was incredulous.
"She is." Logan replied quietly. "Why do you care?"
Mitchum shrugged. "I really don't. But I can't believe I didn't see it. When you kicked Odette to the curb, I thought for sure that you were insane. But now I get it."
Logan glared at him. "What do you think you get exactly?"
Mitchum chuckled at Logan's attitude. "I think you never got over her. Why do you think this time will be any different? You think she's going to marry you this time? You're kidding yourself."
Logan sighed. "Why are you here, anyway?"
Mitchum sauntered into Logan's kitchen with Logan trailing behind him. He found Rory sitting at the kitchen island drinking a glass of orange juice and checking her email. "Rory, good to see you again."
"Thanks, it's good to see you too." She stood up and they shared a polite half-hug. She and Logan exchanged a look over Mitchum's shoulder.
Mitchum asked Rory, "So long have you been in town?"
Logan replied, "She got here this morning. We were on the same flight actually."
Mitchum raised his eyebrows. "So, what's going on with the two of you?"
Rory asked him, "What do you mean exactly?"
"Are you the reason he broke up with his fiancé?" Mitchum asked her pointedly.
Logan took a deep breath. "Dad, sit down." Mitchum looked visibly pained, but he complied. Logan continued talking. "Dad, Odette deserved better."
Mitchum scoffed, "Now, that's true. She's a lovely woman – boring but lovely."
Logan went on, "Even if Rory never spoke to me again, I still didn't want to be with Odette. But you're right about one thing: I still love Rory. I always have. We've been seeing each other casually for about three years."
Mitchum raised his eyebrows. "Three years?"
Rory tried to explain too. "We tried not to see each other several times. We both dated other people, lived in separate countries…."
Logan went on. "We saw each other about two months ago and decided to call it off completely. I ended things with Odette as well the following day."
Rory jumped in. "We ran into each other last night on a flight to Heathrow. Logan was assigned the seat next to mine when he boarded the flight in New York. We talked and decided to try this again." Logan moved to stand next to Rory and he nodded in agreement.
Mitchum narrowed his eyes. "Really? No story? No evasiveness? Nothing? What's the catch?"
Logan shook his head. "No catch. You asked, so I assume you wanted the truth. And I'm sick of trying not to be with Rory."
Rory nodded. "That's the honest truth. Well, most of it."
Mitchum sighed. "What else?"
Logan took the sonogram photos out of his inside pocket of his jacket. "What else? Well, you're going to be a grandfather again." He laid the pictures on the marble surface in front of Mitchum.
Mitchum's mouth fell open. "Damn." He turned to Rory. "Were you going to tell Logan if you hadn't run into each other?"
"Yes," she replied quietly. "I was on my way here."
"Well, I certainly hope you two going to stop fucking around and seriously try to make this work." Mitchum looked from Logan to Rory and back to Logan.
Logan sighed, "Yeah, that's the plan."
"So, you're going to get married finally and do the family thing?" Mitchum asked.
Rory squeezed her eyes shut while Logan told his father, "We haven't made any decisions yet. We just got off the plane, had breakfast and got here five minutes before you did. We haven't actually had a chance to talk about anything concrete as of yet."
Mitchum turned to Rory, "How long are you in town?"
Rory shrugged, "I'm not sure. We literally haven't talked about anything yet."
Logan tried again, "Dad, we just need some time. This is all very new information."
Rory decided to appeal to Mitchum's sense of decency. "I haven't told my grandmother yet. Would you mind waiting to tell Shira until I've been able to tell Emily?"
Mitchum nodded, "I think I can do that." He stood up to hug Rory. "Congratulations. And welcome to our family. No matter what else happens, you're the mother to my grandchild and that makes you family anyway."
"Thanks, Mitchum. I appreciate it." She said as she hugged him back.
Mitchum shook Logan's hand and said, "This was a surprise, but a good surprise. I really won't tell your mom. But you need to. Soon."
Logan nodded. "We have a lot to talk about. Then we will likely start telling people about the baby."
"Fair enough," Mitchum said. "So, are you feeling well? Is the baby healthy?" he asked Rory.
She was surprised. "Yes, thank you. We're both fine. Still very surprised, but healthy."
Mitchum fingered the photos that remained on the counter. "Would it be okay if I kept one of these?" he asked quietly.
Logan nodded. "Sure. You can have one – in exchange for month or so of silence?"
Mitchum smiled. "Done."
Mitchum started to retreat to the foyer to leave and Logan stopped him. "Hey…. Why did you originally come here?"
Mitchum shrugged. "Its nothing that can't keep until I see you at the office tomorrow." Then he said to Rory, "I hope you get some rest and enjoy the rest of your stay."
She smiled and said, "Thank you."
