Logan, Lorelai, and Mitchum walked back to the waiting room and ran into Luke and Jess who returned at the same time. Lorelai filled Luke and Jess in on the latest with Rory – she was with Paris for an exam, and they had been asked to leave. Everyone raised their eyebrows and Jess finally said, "You know, I thought I'd met intense people before, but….."
Luke nodded slowly. "Yep. She's terrifying." Mitchum raised his eyebrows in question and then Luke said, "She's the only person I've ever seen scare Richard Gilmore. And that was when she was still in high school."
Mitchum gasped, "Seriously? I can't picture that." Everyone burst out laughing and it seemed to take the edge off a little.
Jess said, "Okay so, let's figure out what else needs to be done before we all go our separate ways."
Lorelai sighed, "I still need to let Emily know. And I haven't because I have no idea how to tell her."
Logan replied, "Why don't we wait until morning? And then I'll call her."
Luke nodded. "Perfect. She shouldn't try to travel her from Nantucket now. Its starting to get dark and it's snowing again."
Lorelai asked, "You would really call her?"
Logan nodded, "Sure. Rory would want me to." Lorelai mouthed 'THANK YOU' to Logan and he gave her a small smile and nodded.
Jess added, "Liz is bringing clothes and stuff for you guys. Michel and Sookie are handling the Dragonfly, and Cesar has the diner. Paul Anka is at Lane's house."
More tears streamed down Lorelai's face. "Thank you, Jess. I appreciate you so much," she said as she embraced him. Then she told Luke and Jess, "Mitchum was kind enough to reserve some rooms at The Goodwyn, the hotel down the street. Thank you again, Mitchum. That's so nice of you."
"It's my pleasure," Mitchum said. Then he turned to Jess, "I don't know if we've met before. I'm Mitchum, Logan's father." Logan was shocked because he'd never heard Mitchum introduce himself without a grandiose HUNTZBERGER at the end to intimidate people.
"Jess Mariano, Luke's nephew. Its nice to meet you." Jess stuck out his hand which Mitchum promptly shook.
Luke said, to Lorelai, "Oh, I called your auto insurance company. They are going to deal with your Jeep and get back to us. They want to know what kind of rental you want, and they will drop it off to us here. It's all arranged."
"Thank you," she said as she kissed him quickly and thought about it for a minute. "I don't care what kind of rental. Just nothing too big or complicated, okay?"
Luke nodded and grinned. "I'll let them know."
Jess stood up while looking at his phone. "Liz is here with a couple overnight bags. I'm going to meet her outside, unless you want her to come in….."
"NO!" Luke and Lorelai both said at the same time. Logan and Mitchum exchanged curious glances.
Luke then said, "Thank her for us." Lorelai nodded in agreement. Luke then told the Huntzbergers and said "Liz is my sister. We….. don't need her here. Trust me."
Logan nodded. "Understood." Then he turned to Mitchum and said, "I've already let Honor know. Have you told Shira?"
Mitchum shook his head. "No. I thought it was up to you. She isn't particularly useful during things like this, so I didn't inform her."
Logan raised his eyebrows and smirked at his father, "Good call. Does she even know you're in America?"
Mitchum shook his head then offered, "Now that you both have your overnight bags, you should go and get some rest. Order a good meal, have a hot shower and rest." Lorelai tipped her head to the side as she considered how great sleep and a bath would be.
Luke tried to convince her too. "They will contact us if there is any change at all. And you need your rest if Emily is coming tomorrow, right?" He raised his eyebrows at the question.
"Oh, crap. Yeah." Lorelai scrubbed her face with both hands.
"Come on." Luke put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. "Thanks again, Mitchum."
"Sure thing, Luke. Hey, I'm going that way. Want to ride with me so you don't have to schlep through the snow?"
Logan grinned at Lorelai and Luke palling around with Mitchum. He decided it was lack-of-sleep-induced delirium. "Good night, guys. I'll probably get over there later to shower and change. I'm not ready to leave." Lorelai nodded and kissed his cheek. "Text me if….."
"I promise," Logan said as he nodded to Luke and his father. "Sleep well."
As they left, Logan sat down and closed his eyes. He rubbed his temples and thought of how perfect his life was 72 hours ago. He woke up with his girl in his arms, his girl who was radiant with the glow of carrying their baby. He hated the fact that Rory was hurt, he was terrified that she was unconscious and most of all, he just missed her. Logan had grown very accustomed to having her in his life again in the past few weeks. He was dying to hold her, kiss her, draw her a bubble bath, cook her a meal and all the thousands of other things that he loved doing for her.
The door opened again, and Jess entered the waiting room. He dropped his duffle bag on the floor by a nearby chair and handed Logan one of the cups of coffee he was holding. "This is the good coffee, from the shop down the street."
"Thank you. I really appreciate it. The stuff from the cafeteria is…. Well…. Its better than nothing but…." Logan searched for the right words.
Jess grinned. "Agreed. Logan, are you okay?" he asked as he sat down in the chair next to Logan's. He nudged his bag under his chair with his foot.
Logan shook his head. "I'm better. I'm so much better, now that we know she's improving, and she doesn't have a skull fracture or a brain bleed. But as long as she's still unconscious…. I just don't know when she might wake up, or if she will be okay once she does wake up." Jess nodded his understanding. "Control freaks like me don't fare well in these kinds of circumstances." Jess nodded again as Logan sipped his coffee. "This really IS good coffee. Thank you."
"Did Rory every tell you about her broken arm?" Jess asked Logan. Logan shook his head, waiting for more details. "We were in high school. Luke convinced her to tutor me in something I didn't need tutoring in, but she was cute, and I liked hanging out with her, so I played along." Logan grinned at the admission. "Anyway, I convinced her to go out for ice cream cones. She made me drive her car so that she could continue reading my textbook to me. A dog ran out of nowhere – at least I think it was a dog – and I swerved. To make a long story short, there was a low-speed accident and Rory ended up in the hospital getting a cast on her arm. Luke put me on a bus to Brooklyn before daybreak because I broke the town princess. I've never felt so bad about anything in my whole life."
Logan nodded and winced at the very idea of Rory being hurt. He pursed his lips as Jess continued. "It isn't what you think. We weren't dating or anything. Actually, she was dating someone else at the time. But she was special – she IS special. The whole damn town was SO sure that I was going to corrupt her..."
Logan nodded and said, "I know exactly what you mean. When she and I dated in college, Lorelai seemed concerned that I was going to somehow change Rory. When, it was Rory who changed me INSTANTLY. I always thought that if Lorelai knew anything at all about her daughter, she would have known that Rory couldn't be changed because she was dating someone."
Jess nodded as he got a whole new insight on how Logan felt about Rory. Jess leaned back in his chair and sipped his coffee. "Logan, I should tell you something."
Logan also leaned back in his chair and took a sip. "Okay," he said evenly.
Jess sighed and said, "I asked Rory out. Yesterday. I didn't know about you guys. The last time I saw her was at the wedding. She was beautiful, smelled good and was single. We danced and I started reminiscing." Logan nodded slowly, waiting for the other shoe to drop. "A few hours after she arrived in Stars Hollow, I went to see her at her mom's house. I brought flowers and asked her out to dinner."
"Yeah?" Logan asked. He wanted to know what happened next, but he wasn't making any assumptions. He refused to believe that Rory would do anything to disrespect their relationship.
Jess chuckled. "She sat me down and told me about her new job, moving to London, having a baby and getting married." Logan just stared at him. "There was time in my life when I might have tried to be selfish and try to ruin her plans, but that wasn't even an option. She was so happy as she sat there telling me how in love she is and how excited she is. She told me that she didn't know how to NOT love you, even if she wanted to."
Logan smirked and lowered his gaze, thinking about the last time Rory said those words to him. "So...?"
Jess scoffed and said, "She told me to give you a chance. She said we have a lot in common and she wanted me to have dinner with you two once you came to Connecticut." He had a rueful smile and said, "I had no idea we would end up chatting in a hospital waiting room less than 48 hours later. Anyway, I wanted to be up front and tell you that I asked her out – before I knew about you guys. I wasn't trying to be shady, and I had no plans to even attempt to mess anything up. I would never try to mess up a family."
Logan nodded. "Thanks. Once she's well, we can have that dinner and tell her about this conversation. She might be proud of us."
Jess smirked and shook his head, "Nah. She's going to mock the shit out of both of us."
Logan chuckled. "Definitely."
The door opened quietly, and Colin and Finn walked in. Finn was wearing a three-piece suit and Colin wore jeans, sneakers and a track jacket. Logan was startled at Colin's appearance. He had no idea that Colin owned jeans let alone would wear them in public. He jumped up at the sight of his best friends and hugged each of them as they both started with rapid-fire questions about everything. Eventually, they sat down, and Logan introduced Jess to his friends. They all quietly chatted about everything and nothing.
Paris finally came out and pulled Logan to the side. "What's up Paris? How is she?"
Paris nodded. "She's good. The baby is fine and safe. They did a bit of wound care, so I stayed to supervise. I'm thinking we might need to consult plastics; I don't think she will appreciate a bunch of scars on her face once this is all over." Logan raised his eyebrows in question. Paris continued, "That doesn't always mean a procedure. Sometimes it just means a prescription cream or some laser treatment to fade scars and help the skin heal. We can't just use anything on her skin right now because she's pregnant. I want to consult a plastic surgeon if you're okay with that?"
Logan nodded. "That seems reasonable. Thanks, Paris."
Paris smacked him on the shoulder. "You're welcome, Rockefeller." He chuckled at her old, ridiculous nickname for him. "Also, her heart rate has gotten a tiny bit faster." Logan's eyes widened but Paris said, "That's probably a good thing."
"How so?" Logan asked.
"Well, usually when the heart rate usually increases before a coma patient wakes up. So, we're hoping that happens sometime soon. Amanda – her neurologist – is in with her now, just being thorough."
Logan gave her a tight smile. "Thanks, Paris," as he pulled her into a hug. "I appreciate it and Rory will too."
Paris raised an eyebrow and admitted, "You're handling this better than I thought you might. Five years ago, I sprained my ankle and Doyle went to New Zealand for six months." She squinted across the room and said, "Is that Simon and Theodore over there? I haven't seen them since Yale."
Logan winced at her memory which was no doubt unflattering. "Yeah, but they go by Finn and Colin these days."
Paris replied, "We'll see."
The two old friends went over to the other three guys and sat down. Logan gave them the abridged version of the good news and reintroduced Paris to his friends. Colin stole several glances at Paris, who wore form-fitting scrubs and a scrub jacket. Logan and Finn noticed and exchanged glances about it. Before anyone could make a comment, Amanda burst into the room and walked over to the group. "Logan."
"Dr. Burkes. How was her exam?" he asked. He worried... was she always abrupt and high-energy or was something wrong?
She glanced around at the group and Logan assured her, "Everyone here is family. You can speak freely."
In the split-second before she spoke, the tension in the air was palpable. You could have reached out and taken a chunk of it. Finally, she said, "I don't want to give you false hope, but her heart rate is coming up slightly. I'm hoping that it's a sign that she might wake up soon."
Finn nodded first and said, "She will. Love has always been one of the strongest people I know." Logan and Paris nodded at the same time.
Amanda sat down on the arm of the oversized chair that Jess was occupying. She grabbed his hand and said, "I need some dinner and some rest. You coming?"
Jess smirked at her and said, "Absolutely," as he reached for his bag.
She whispered quietly to him, "I'll grab my bag. Be right back."
Logan grinned at Jess, "Well, alright then. Don't forget, we have a block of rooms at the hotel down the street."
"Thanks," Jess said as he watched her walk out of the room.
Finn was still watching her leave the room. "Damn. I had no idea they were passing out hot doctors in the waiting room. I would have bloody come here years ago!"
Jess chuckled at the comment and then asked Logan, "Text me if we get any more information?"
Logan nodded. "Go, rest... and... whatever. And thanks for everything."
Amanda walked back in the room and told Logan, "You can see her again. They just finished cleaning her up."
"Thank you so much." Logan took her hand in both of his. "You are all taking great care of her – of them."
As Amanda and Jess left the room, Colin asked, "Them?"
Paris nodded and said, "Yeah. Rory's pregnant."
"REALLY?!" Colin was shocked. "That's... wow..." He was at a loss for words.
Logan grinned at him, "Nine weeks."
Colin did the math quickly. "New Hampshire?"
Logan nodded as he waved to them. "I'm going see my girl. Can you both fill Colin in?" he asked Paris and Finn.
They nodded and smiled as he scurried out of the room to see Rory.
