Extraordinary (Part 2)

Week 8 (A Lucifer Earth Week)

~o~

It happens all at once. Instantaneous. An all-encompassing, blood-chilling fear at the sight of her missing perp, standing in front of the Penthouse elevator, gun in hand, aimed directly at her daughter.

Lucifer reacts faster than Chloe does, immediately pulling her body behind his own and reaching a hand out toward her daughter, but instantly Chloe knows Trixie is too far away. She knows it in one horrifying moment. The perp's gun is leveled at her daughter, finger on the trigger, revenge in his eyes, and Chloe knows the five feet separating her daughter from her and Lucifer is much too far away. Chloe's heart seizes, her mouth opening to scream her daughter's name, while two things seem to happen simultaneously: the gun goes off, and a powerful disturbance of air has an extraordinary wall of white appearing in front of both Chloe and her daughter.

Lucifer's wings.

Lucifer's wings, stretching magnificently tall and wide, forming a shield of white feathers, long enough to reach in front of Chloe and Trixie both.

Chloe's relief is equally all-encompassing.

There's movement of feathers and then the soft clink of a bullet dropping to the floor.

The gun goes off several more times in a random array of hysteria from their gunman, one of the bullets connecting with Lucifer's torso, while the rest disappear into his wings, only to scatter benignly to the floor with a deliberate shake of feathers. Lucifer is storming toward the heinous man, his hand snapping out to knock the gun from the perp's hand before he's seizing him by his neck.

After a quick glance at where her daughter stands beside the piano, eyes wide and mouth hanging agape—shocked and undoubtedly terrified but otherwise unharmed—Chloe decides reining in Lucifer's explosive anger takes priority in this instance.

Sprinting to where Lucifer now has their perp dangling from the ground in a choke hold, his wings still spread out on magnificent display, she quickly scoops up the discarded gun and puts a hand on his outstretched arm. "Lucifer, it's okay," she says, voice a bit shaky. "Let him go. I've got this." She squeezes his arm, a little panicked as his eyes flick red and he continues to squeeze the life out of the man. "Lucifer," she pleads, casting a worried glance at her daughter where she stands watching the scene play out with wide eyes.

Thankfully, the reminder of Trixie's presence seems to do the trick; he loosens his grip and lowers the man back to the ground.

Chloe pulls out her phone to call it in, while she trains the gun on their stunned perp, nodding at Lucifer to let him know she'll take it from here.

Lucifer shoves him to the ground, and Chloe notices with a large degree of satisfaction that the man is actually quaking with fear as he stares up at Lucifer's winged form. "Wh—what the h—hell are you, man?" he chokes.

"Lucifer," Chloe cuts in quickly before Lucifer can respond with more words of terror, angling her chin in Trixie's direction to signal he should check on her instead.

It's not how either of them intended to reveal the truth of Lucifer's divinity to Trixie. Not by a long shot.

Chloe watches Lucifer slowly begin to register the stark reality of this fact. His wings fold and disappear from one second to the next, and he turns slowly.

Trixie's wide eyes flick between both her mother and Lucifer before settling on Lucifer once more.

Chloe sees something enter Lucifer's eyes then; something that cuts into her heart.

Fear.

Not the life-threatening kind, but the kind that scrapes at deep, wounded parts of your soul.

The kind Chloe's seen in him once before as he stood over Pierce's body.

Fear of rejection.

The soul-shearing kind of someone who's witnessed it enough times to break them.

Never has it been more clear to Chloe just how deeply her daughter has managed to work her way into Lucifer's heart.

The power to love gives the power to break.

And so, Chloe knows she'll never forget this moment.

She'll never forget the moment Trixie unfreezes, takes several steps, and then flings her arms around Lucifer.

She'll never forget Lucifer's stunned expression, or the way her daughter hugs him so tightly she hears him gasp. The way tears trickle down Trixie's cheeks as she whispers "I knew it" over and over and over.
