Summary/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of Snowy Soulmates. Enjoy the 900-word chapter. I don't own VK, Sega, Ryutaro Nonaka and Shuntaro Tanaka do.
Matias followed Minerva around while looking around camp. The man was questioning what was going on around the military base. It was quite clear that Minerva prided herself on handling the majority of officer work.
"What makes you so sure the empire will return soon?" Minerva asked as the Vinland Colonel put his hands in his pockets.
"Because they have the lay of the land." Matias said while crossing his arms. "The empire lives out here in the cold. Their used to it. The federation and Vinland aren't. If I was an Imperial officer? I'd make a feint to draw out troops before crushing them in a pincer maneuver." Matias said which caused Minerva to sigh and shake her head.
Matias did have a point. The empire lived in the middle of the wasteland they advanced into. Their tech would no doubt be on par with Vinland's.
"And how would you respond?" Minerva asked as she checked over the clipboard in his hand.
"I would try and keep the armor in the rear and lure them into traps." Matias said while putting his hands into the pockets of his coat. "Take away their mobility and then circle around to cut them off. The empire fields heavy armor the most, yes?" Matias asked and got a nod from the redheaded soldier.
"Then you cut off their mobility, tanks have their radiators in the back of them." Matias said and leaned on the wall. "Once you cut off their mobility? Then you can cut them apart…. It's the foot soldiers you have to look out for." Matias said before feeling a snowflake land on his cheek.
Minerva said nothing. She knew how good infantry was when it came down to it. You could have 50 tanks and against say 20 soldiers? With the right tactics? The tanks would be reduced to scrap metal within minutes.
Minerva looked at Matias and hummed while the Colonel looked up at the sky.
"Should I point out that you know I'm not as soldier like as you." Matias said and brushed off snow from his coat. "Vinland doesn't fight wars like the rest of the Federation. We fight dirty, it's why not many people try to pick fights with us." Matias said as he hummed.
"Your professional enough." Minerva said while Matias caught a snowflake on the tip on his tongue. "Have you not had to fight to advance in the ranks?" Minerva asked which caught Matias off guard.
He cleared his throat and sat down on a crate of supplies. He knew for a fact that it was a good question.
"Yes, but I've also killed other soldiers." Matias pointed out while turning back to Minerva. "And most people focus on survival on the battlefield. Not rules, not constant thinking… Just instinct. The empire might have thousands of rules and tactics, but their just thinking about the best way to kill and beat us." Matias stated as he hummed.
"Yes, that would be the case." Minerva said while brushing off her own coat with interest as she turned to start walking around. "But that's no reason to fight like animals." Minerva added to which Matias shook his head.
He knew very well that warfare had rules that should be followed. Things soldiers shouldn't do on the battlefield. However? That rang massively hollow to most people. Soldiers weren't very different from regular people.
"Doesn't mean we wont have to." Matias said while shaking his head. "The empire is ruthless. Everyone acts like fighting is barbaric, but nobody treats it like survival. If we have to? You fight to stay alive, Ms. Victor." Matias said while he turned to catch another snowflake.
Minerva said nothing, but didn't deflect his point. Soldiers were going to die and Minerva couldn't stand by and let people die if she could help it.
"Colonel?" Minerva asked and got a raised eyebrow in return. "Why have you spent much of the time around me? I'm not the ranking officer here." Minerva pointed out and got a shrug.
"Because you're the officer I know the most here." Matias said and rubbed at his temples. "Maybe I just like someone to talk about things with between shoot outs." Matias said with a yawn that caused him to blink in shock as more snow fell upon his face.
There was something coming on the wind. Matias could feel it, and yet he didn't know what it was. This would be tough when it got down to it. There was only so much that he could do about it other then prepare as best he could.
Still? It was a very hard position to be in… And the snowy winds carried only the omen of death from what he felt. Matias left to go and speak to his officers and hummed while thinking about what came next.
