Hey Guys! Sorry this took me so long but here is an update!
Mercedes made her way down the stairs holding Zach. Sam leaned in as they made it to the bottom and kissed her cheek. "For courage. I know this is out of your comfort zone."
Mercedes smiled. "Sam, with you by my side, I am okay."
Mary noticed them first and moved over to them. "My babies." She said, kissing the twins, and Sam shook his head.
"I am still here, mom; you get that, right?"
"Sam babies are around; she is no longer our mom; she's nana," Stevie said, walking into the room. He looked over Mercedes and shook his head. "How the hell-"
"Steven! There are babies present!" Mary scolded, taking Zola from Sam.
"Sorry, mom, I meant to say, how the heck can Sam land someone so amazing as Mercedes. She is so out of his league."
Mercedes blushed.
"Seriously, if you get sick of Sam, just give me a call." He winked at her.
"Stevie! Do you not see our twins right here? She is taken."
"I am?" Mercedes smirked, looking at Sam.
"You are." He said, staring at her.
"Sammy!" Stacey sang, running into the room. She stopped when she saw Mercedes and the babies. "Oh my babies, hi, I am your Aunt Stacey, and I am gonna love you forever. They are perfect…can I please hold him? I am Stacey, by the way."
Mercedes smiled. "Sure." She let go of Zach, watching them. Sam leaned closer to her as he watched his mom, sister, and brother coo over the twins.
After a few moments, Zola started to cry, followed by Zach. "They are hungry and ready for a nap, and I can take them up."
Mary shook her head. "Please let me. It's been so long since babies have been here, and this way, you and Sammy can take a break."
Mercedes hesitated for a moment. "I haven't really let them go since I have had them. I just need a minute."
Mary smiled. "I was the same way with Sam when he was born. If you are uncomfortable, don't worry; I can just come and help you."
Mercedes closed her eyes with a soft smile. "It's okay; they should get to spend time with their Nana and Auntie. Their baby food and formula are in the diaper bag. And you can feed them in their car seats…."
Sam pulled Mercedes close, kissing her on the forehead as Mary and Stacey giggled, carrying them upstairs. "Thank you for that…for all of this. I know being here is just weird."
She smiled, looking around his parent's huge house. "So this is where you grew up?"
Sam nodded. Mercedes walked over to the foyer wall staring at the family photos. "You were such an adorable baby…and wow, the twins do favor you."
Sam smiled. "My genes are strong. What can I say?"
Mercedes laughed. "You are a mess!"
Sam moved behind her, kissing her neck. "Now that we have time to ourselves, what do you say we do something I want to do?"
Mercedes turned around in his arms. "Sam, if we did what you wanted, we would be naked against this wall right now."
"So…I like you naked."
She giggled, shaking her head. "Sam, you are inviting trouble."
He kissed her softly. "If I didn't say it before, I love having you here."
She smiled, kissing him back, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"You must be the woman who has my son acting as if he has no sense," Dwight said, walking into the room, followed by a few older men.
Sam exhaled, pulling away from her. "Dad, don't," Sam said through gritted teeth.
"What? can't a father joke around?" He asked, moving in front of Mercedes as he looked from her to Sam. "You nice shade," he said to Sam. Looking over at his friends, he smiled. "This is Mercedes, the mother of the twins I was telling you about…What were their names again?"
Mercedes sighed, forcing a smile. "My son is named Zachery Samuel, after my father who I lost…and my grandfather who raised me, and of course after Sam. My daughter is Zola Athena, named after my mother and baby sister, who I also lost." She said, letting her voice trail.
"Beautiful. I guess I should accept that I am in the grandfather club now." Dwight said, nodding over to his friends.
A taller gentleman walked over to her, smiling. "I am Mel Jordan; I am a pediatrician, and I am here for the exam…free of charge."
Mercedes raised an eyebrow. "I'm sorry, what?"
"I am offering you a free exam. You know, make sure the kids are okay, healthy, and all that."
"Why would I let a stranger touch my children?" Mercedes asked as the door opened, and Quinn walked in with a Latina standing next to her. Behind her were a well-dressed man and woman.
"What the hell is happening?" Sam asked.
Dwight moved over to Quinn. "Russell, Judy. Please come in."
Sam looked at Quinn, and she threw her hands up. "I don't know what's going on; my parents just said we were invited. I thought it was weird, but."
Dwight smiled. "Now that everyone is here let's go into the living room and discuss this."
"Discuss what, dad?" Sam said, folding his arms as he looked between his dad and Quinn's parents.
Dwight sighed. "Let's sit down."
"Let's not. Dad, what is going on?"
Dwight threw his hands up. "You want to do this here, fine. Everyone is here to right a wrong. Mel is here to make sure that the twins are indeed healthy and being taken care of before you take full custody of them. Judge Swanson is here to approve the custody agreement and to marry you and Quinn so she can adopt the twins. Mercedes will be compensated, of course, and given custody as long as she signs a gag order."
"The hell?" Mercedes said, staring at him. "You really think I am going to just sign over my parental rights? Are you high?"
"Excuse me?" Dwight said.
"Yeah, excuse you! Because you are an arrogant, pompous jackass, who thinks you can throw money at a problem, and it will just go away. These are my children, and it will be a cold day in hell before I let you take them from me!"
"Is that a threat?"
"Dad!" Stevie said sternly.
"No, you all heard her threaten me! I want her arrested."
Mercedes laughed as Sam moved in front of her. "Where the hell do you get off? I brought them here to spend Christmas with my family, and you do this?!"
"Sam, I am looking out for your future. Once people learn that you got some whore pregnant, what do you think will happen?"
Mercedes scoffed. "Whore? Really?"
"Yes, whore! Do you really think I didn't do my research on you? Abandoned by her family, moved around up until you got to high school. Your fiancee left you on your wedding day; you don't even have a job. You marked my son, and now your games are over. You will sign those children over to my son now, or I will ruin your life."
Mercedes took a breath and stepped towards him moving Sam out of her way. "Abandoned? You bastard! My father, who was loving and kind, caring in a way that your children would be jealous about! He was the best father I could ever ask for, along with my mother, who had such a sweet spirit!" She said, voice cracking. "And my siblings, who were barely even children, died in a car crash. They didn't abandon me! You are such an asshole!" She said, wiping her fallen tears. "I am taking my children, and I am leaving."
She turned, but Dwight grabbed her arm. Sam cut his eyes at his father, his voice deathly calm. "Get your hands off of her. Now!"
"Samuel, this…this person is standing between you and your future. You have a chance to right this wrong."
"This wrong?! That is the mother of my children, and I love her, and nothing that happened between us was wrong."
Sam removed his father's hand.
Russell rolled his eyes. "Dwight, I thought you had your son under control?"
"Oh, like you have your daughter under control? Did she have to bring her lesbian lover?"
Every eye went to Quinn and Santana, and Quinn smiled, shrugging. "Look, my dad said you wanted to be with me and that you didn't care if Santana and I stayed together."
"And of course, I agreed cause wanky, but damn, Q, when you told me that Sam left you for a Nubian queen, you forgot to tell me that she was sexy as fuck. Hey, baby, you sure you're straight? Quinn and I love a little chocolate."
"SANTANA!" Quinn and Sam said together.
She shrugged. "Hey, your dad is basically trying to pimp out my girlfriend, and if you guys get married and get together, I want something on the side too."
Mercedes rolled her eyes. "This is unbelievable."
"You listen here; either you give your rights up, or we will take you for everything you have. You already don't look good on paper. But how will you feel if your friends, your family lost everything because of you." Dwight moved closer to her despite Sam blocking his path. "I will call Child Protective Services as soon as you get home, and they will take them and put them in foster care until Sam can get there. Is that what you want? For your children to go to strangers."
Sam laughed. "You know what, Dwight, I knew you were a bastard when I turned 15 and wanted to take up drawing, and you said I was too dumb to do anything other than the path you set me on. And in truth, I let you guide me because I believed that was all I was good for. But Mercedes saw me…." He turned to her. "You made me see I was so much more than what my father said I was. You made me realize that my dad put me in place to be here, but I actually am good at it and love making this place better."
Mercedes was about to speak, but Sam shook his head, looking back to his father. "So you are right, I am getting married, and my children will have a family."
"So you have come to your senses and will Marry Quinn?"
"No, I am going to marry Mercedes if she will have me." He turned and got down on one knee. "You've changed my life, and I love you. Screw my dad and Russell and all of this; I want you and those kids. Marry me, Mercedes, be my wife, be my life."
"Do not do this, Samuel!" Dwight said, pulling him off the floor.
"The babies are freshly cleaned, and…what did I walk in on?" Mary asked as she started down the stairs with Zola.
Mercedes moved to grab Zola from Mary. "We are leaving, thank you for the invite, but I don't believe we are welcome here anymore."
Mercedes blinked back her tears as she hurried up to her room.
Sam yanked his arm away from him and looked at his mother. "Tell me that you didn't know his plan when you invited Mercedes here?"
"What?"
"Mother, please! Just tell me the truth. Did you know?"
Mary shook her head. "I have no idea what you are talking about."
"Sam is just overreacting honey," Dwight said.
"Overreact- your husband just threatened to call CPS on Mercedes unless she gives up custody of the twins to me; I marry Quinn and let her adopt them."
"Dwight Evans, tell me that is not why you invited these men into my house."
"We need to get ahead of this, Mary; now, Sam, you will do as I say."
"No, I won't. I am going upstairs to help Mercedes pack, and then we are never stepping foot here again," Sam said, walking past his mother.
"Sam, please look; I don't agree with your father; I don't want to not see my grandkids," Mary said, looking after him.
"I can't deal with this right now. I have to check on Mercedes." He said, going towards the room. Stacey walked out and looked at him.
"Sam, what happened?"
"Dad happened. Is she okay?"
Stacey shook her head. "No, you need to get her and those kids as far away from this house, or you will lose her."
Sam knocked on the door, walking in, and saw Mercedes packing up the bag, zipping it, and placing it next to the twins.
"Hey, baby."
Mercedes looked at Sam. "I am going home."
"No, please don't go; just come with me to where I wanted to take you before all this." He said softly. "I am sorry I let him hurt you."
She sniffed. "It's not your fault, and your dad is a bastard." She cried with a bitter laugh.
"I know."
After getting Mercedes out of his parent's house, thanks to Stacey, Quinn, and Santana's running interference, he was surprised at that. Still, it was clear that Quinn wanted no parts in what their fathers had cooked up.
Sam rocked Zach in his arms as he looked over to Mercedes. "I am still really sorry, Mercedes I thought my mom had him under control, but the truth is Dwight Evans is a dick."
Mercedes gave him a small smile. "Thank you for getting me out of there; he just…."
She shook it off, and Sam nodded. "He bulldozed us; it's his signature move. The worst part of it all is that he really thought Quinn and I would go along with it."
"Yeah, I mean, I only met her once before, but even I know that when she walked in, she was happier."
"Oh, she is; she and Santana moved in together. She said the only reason she and Santana even showed up is because her dad said I had begged for this arrangement and that she and Santana could do what they wanted."
Mercedes shook her head. "Thank God he didn't get his hands on the twins. Sam, I don't ever want him near them. As long as they are here, your mom and siblings can see them, but no matter what happens between you and me, I do not want your dad a part of their lives."
Sam moved over to her and kissed her forehead, then Zola's; next, he lifted Zach and had him do the same. "You don't ever have to worry about that."
Mercedes nodded, looking away. "Did you mean what you asked? The whole marriage thing?"
Sam smiled. "Mercedes, when I asked you to marry me, it may have come up because I wanted to stop my father, but I meant it."
He reached in his pocket and handed a small box to Zach. "Can you hand that to mama?" He said, looking at Zach as he bounced him in his arms, moving closer to her.
Mercedes shifted Zola and smiled, taking it. Zola reached for it, and Mercedes smiled. "No, baby girl, this is mama's, but-" Her voice trailed as she stared at a 14K Rose Gold Halo Diamond engagement ring. Tiny diamonds wrapped around the big diamond and along the ring. "Sam, this is…."
"You? I saw it, and I knew it was you. I know that we started off wrong, and then we lost each other, but Mercedes, you were made for me. You are a part me of, and you have given me these two amazing babies. I love them, I love you. Marry me. You are my family, Mercedes."
She chewed her bottom lip and stared at Sam, looking him in the eye. "You are our family too."
"Is that a yes?"
She smiled with a nod. Sam leaned in and kissed her softly, then took the ring out of the box and then placed it on her finger.
"Guys, daddy has such amazing taste."
"Let's put you two down for a nap so daddy can get him something that tastes amazing."
Mercedes laughed, shaking her head. "Sam!"
"What they don't know what I am saying. Now I know you like this guest room, but I do have one room I really want to show you."
Mercedes raised an eyebrow and stared at Sam but followed him across the hall.
"This is a surprise for my girls and my baby boy," Sam said, opening the door, and Mercedes gasped at the nursery in front of her. Half was done in pink and purple, and the other half in green and blues. The twins names were painted on their side of the room, and clothes were in the closet.
"Sam, when did you do this!"
"My mom helped pick all the furniture out, Stevie helped me paint, and Stacey bought all the clothes. Now I know you don't like being away from them, so I have this state-of-the-art baby monitor; you can put the app on your phone and see videos of them both."
Mercedes placed Zola into her crib, and Sam put Zach into his. She looked around, touching the changing table and the rocker. "Sam, this is amazing."
He leaned in and kissed her as the doorbell rang. "I am going to get it; it's probably Sebastian; he landed about 20 minutes ago."
Mercedes nodded as she leaned in, talking to the twins as Sam walked out of the room.
Sam walked out of the room and opened the door, surprised to see Quinn and Santana standing there with Sebastian.
"Okay, Invited one of you, but what are you two doing here?" Sam asked as they walked in.
"I need to talk to you, Sam," Quinn said.
"First, where is she?" Sebastian asked, and Sam nodded behind him.
"She is in the Nursey."
Sebastian nodded and walked towards where Sam pointed.
"Okay, spill it; why are you two here?"
"I am here to get a good look at the-"
Quinn elbowed Santana. "We are here because what our dads did here was the last straw; we need to end this now. And I have a plan."
