One week had passed since Morgan arrived to Ylisstol castle. He was enjoying all the activities that he usually does at the castle. One of his daily activities was to study tactics from his mother's books. He wanted to learn everything that he could to become a great tactician.
Also, Morgan started his research about his mother's disease in the library. He read a lot of books, but unfortunately, he couldn't find any single clue. He even visited Laurent's laboratory and talked to Laurent's mother, but nothing could help.
As Chrom ordered, most of the army and the pegasus knights left the capital in a search of Plegians. A low number of guards stayed, so it was up to them and the Shepherds to watch over Ylisstol.
Morgan was in charge of assigning who would be on patrol each day. He wanted to do a good job, so he decided to study his comrades, their strengths and weakness. He got to know everyone. He even was starting to consider them his friends, even Severa was kind to him now. Gerome continued to be an exception.
Morgan just spent a couple of nights in the barracks with Noire because her parents arrived to Ylisstol. Incredibly, they had been following Noire the whole time. Noire's father was a priest, and he used to run an orphanage in Ylisstol. So, Noire and her parents were staying at the orphanage. Though, for Morgan was difficult to imagine Noire's mother taking care of children. As far as he knew, Tharja wasn't a caring mother.
Morgan casually was invited to dine with the royal family. He would gladly assist, he loved to spend time with his father's family. Everyone was nice with him, everyone but his father. In each diner that Morgan assisted his father was distant with all people, he would barely talk or see anyone. The rest of the family was doing their best to act normally, but Morgan knew that everyone was concerned by the king's behavior.
For Morgan, to be in the same room as his father was good enough. Actually, he was thinking how lucky he was when he met Inigo. When Morgan left his house, he wasn't expecting a good ending. Actually, he was expecting to die at the first trouble that he would encounter. But now, he found something worthy in his actual situation, he found again a reason to live. And that's why he kept fighting against his mother's disease.
While reading a book about healing magic, one specific page caught his attention. It was about a beverage that could help to eliminate any spell, curse, or enchantment placed in someone. Morgan knew that he should give it a try. He managed to get all the ingredients from a merchant named Anna that was passing by the city. He only needed a bottle of pure water and magic dust.
Now with the two ingredients, he was heading to his room. While he was walking, he happened to run into Inigo and Owain.
"Just the man I was looking for!" Inigo exclaimed with joy at seeing Morgan.
"Hi, guys" Morgan greeted them.
"What class of strange items do you have in your hands? Are you planning to prepare a powerful potion?" Owain asked.
"No, of course not. It's just a tonic that will help me to sleep" Morgan answered.
"I didn't know that you have sleep problems. I hope it works, if not, you can tell us. Maybe we can find another solution" Inigo told Morgan.
"Thank you. I'll keep you informed" Morgan assured with a smile.
"We'll be in the training grounds. Maybe you can catch us later and we can have some sparring sessions" Inigo offered.
"That sounds great. I'll see you there, then" Morgan accepted.
"We'll be waiting for you" Inigo said.
Then the guys continued walking in their respective directions. Morgan entered his room, that was clean now. He walked towards the wooden dresser. He left the bottle of pure water and the bag with magic dust on the dresser. Then, he looked at himself in the mirror that was in front of him, hanging on the wall.
Morgan proceeded to take off his gloves, revealing the six eyes mark on his right hand and the brand of the Exalt on his left hand. Both marks were the legacy of his parents. And now that he knows that her mother was Plegian, he realized that he was the fruit of two opposite poles. Then, he remembered how his mother used to say that she and Chrom were "two sides of the same coin."
Morgan shook his head because he needed to focus. He opened the bottle of pure water and then poured the magic dust inside the bottle. As soon as the dust made contact with the water, the water started to shine in a green light.
"Now I just have to say the magic words… which ones were?" he asked himself. After thinking for some minutes, he said with excitement "I got it."
Morgan raised his hand with the bottle and focused his eyes on it.
"Naga, I, your son Morgan, ask for your help. Please, free my body from any kind of magic that doesn't belong to you" he recited.
Morgan closed his eyes and drank the bottle. The water tasted like medicine, so he swallowed as fast as he could. He kept his eyes closed for some minutes. He didn't feel any difference and he was anxious to see the results.
When he opened his eyes, the first thing that he did was to look at his right hand. Unfortunately, the mark was still there.
"Damn it" he swore in frustration. Then, he reprimanded himself for thinking that he could solve the problem so easily.
Then he noticed something on his reflection. He got closer to the mirror and realized that his hair had changed its color.
Now it was blue.
"Oh, no, no, NO!" Morgan entered in panic.
"The spell that my mother placed on me. Morgan, idiot! How could you forget that?" he scolded himself.
"Morgan? Are you okay" he heard a concerned voice at his door that he immediately recognized.
"AH! Princess Lucina! Don't come in!" he screamed while putting his gloves on in a hurry.
Morgan's efforts on being fast were in vain because Lucina opened the door and managed to see his blue hair and the brand on his left hand.
Her eyes opened wide and her face that was worried first, change into a deadly serious look. Lucina entered the room and closed the door behind her.
"What is that?" she demanded to know while signaling Morgan's left hand.
"Nothing, I'm just trying to imitate your father!" Morgan answered, pretending to be calm. He even ended with a fake laugh.
"Do you think that I'm stupid!?" Lucina reproached him with anger.
Lucina got close to him, and violently took his left hand. She raised Morgan's hand at his eyes level, so Morgan could directly see the mark.
"There is no way of imitating the brand of the Exalt, you should have inherited from the royal family. But how?" she started her explanation with a serious tune, but when she got at the question, she sounded puzzled.
Lucina waited for Morgan's answer, but the boy didn't say a word. She started to think by herself, she gave a repass on her bloodline, she even wondered if there was a distant relative, but nothing made sense for her. There was only one person that could give Morgan that mark…
"Oh, no" she muttered while releasing Morgan's hand.
Lucina stepped back and covered her opened mouth with both hands. Tears started to fell from her eyes.
"Please… tell me that we don't have the same father" her broken voice asked.
"We don't have the same father" Morgan said, he was serious now.
"YOU ARE LYING!" Lucina screamed at Morgan.
Lucina covered her whole face with her hands and sat on the floor with her knees bent. Her whines were a torture for Morgan. He could just look at her with sorrow. He didn't want that, he absolutely didn't want that.
Morgan also sat on his knees to get at Lucina´s level.
"Princess Lucina" he called her while trying to touch her with his hand.
"Don't you dare to touch me!" she demanded while slapping Morgan's hand.
Morgan rubbed his affected hand with his other hand.
"Please try to calm yourself, someone could hear you" Morgan suggested.
"Why does it matter? This is what you want! You came here to ruin my family! What do you want? Gold? My father? The throne?" She was angry again and she wasn't covering her face anymore.
"No, I don't want any of that" Morgan answered.
"Why are you here then?" she asked.
"Because I want to know why my mother died! And I think I can find an answer here. I swear" he replied.
Lucina just stayed in silence and wiped her tears.
"Please don't tell anyone about this. Believe me when I say that I don't want anyone to know who I really am. I beseech you."
Lucina again remained in silence, just looking at Morgan's eyes. After some minutes she answered.
"I won't tell anyone" Morgan felt relieved with that and smiled.
"But…" his smile was erased rapidly.
"You cannot talk to anyone of my family ever again. Forget about my father, forget about my mother, and forget about me. You are only allowed to talk to Inigo if it has to do with militaristic issues. And I want you far from this castle as soon as you solve your mother's mystery" those were her conditions.
"Okay…" Morgan accepted, it seemed to him that his world was tearing apart once again.
Lucina got up and glanced at Morgan again.
"You are such a disgrace for this family" those words broke Morgan's heart.
Lucina walked towards the door with firm steps. "And do something with your stupid hair" she said before leaving.
When Lucina left, Morgan got up slowly. He felt awful, like if he didn't have any strength left on his body. He wanted to disappear. He wanted to go back to the past. But nothing of that was possible, so he just took his left glove and put it on. Then, he used his robe's hood to cover his blue hair.
Morgan discreetly left the castle, he managed not to make contact with anyone. He walked through the streets, knowing exactly where he could get help.
Morgan arrived at a big house. The first thing that he saw were a bunch of kids sitting in the grass of the garden. A blonde man with long hair was reading a story to them. Morgan just stood in the entrance; he was admiring the scene.
It didn't take long for the man to realize that Morgan was watching them. The man gasped and that made the other kids look at Morgan as well.
"Kids, I'll finish the story later. Meanwhile you can play" the man ordered.
The kids got up and ran towards the backyard. The man also got up and approached Morgan.
"Morgan, it's good to see you again. I though you would never come" the man greeted him.
"Hello, Libra. It's good to see you too. I need to see Tharja" Morgan said, he was getting nervous.
"You sound troubled, are you okay?" Libra asked.
"Yes."
"Well, follow me" Libra indicated.
Libra led Morgan inside the house.
"Is Noire here?" Morgan asked.
"No, she went out with some friends. I'm glad that she reconnected with her friends of the past. She is really happy with them" Libra told Morgan.
The two guys stopped in front of a door.
"You know Morgan? I am very disappointed of you. I never thought you would leave like that, without saying any word" Libra protested.
"I can say the same. I never thought you two would hide things from me. Specially regarding my mother" Morgan protested back.
"What are you talking about?" a clueless Libra asked.
"I heard you, the night before I left. Tharja was telling you how you should never tell me that I have the same disease as my mother. That it would be better for me to enjoy the short time that I have left without worrying for something that doesn't seem to have a cure. But guess what? I want to keep living. And I'll find a cure" Morgan face was red for the anger. He had been keeping his emotions for too long.
"For the goddess. Morgan, I'm sorry that you heard that, but is not what you think. Yes, Tharja said that, but it was just a suggestion. You were all depressed and we were worried that telling you the truth will affect you more. But I was decided to tell you the truth later, and of course to find a cure. I swear, there is no night where I don't pray to Naga for a salvation for you."
Morgan remained silence for some moments. He was impressed by Libra's words, and realized that he had made a mistake.
"Oh, In that case. I'm sorry that I left without announcing it. And I'm sorry that I dragged Noire with me" Morgan apologized.
"What matters is that you two are okay. Noire told me that you are the Shepherds' tactician" said Libra, leaving behind all the tension.
"Yes, I'll be staying at the castle for a while. I'm trying to find a cure in there" Morgan said.
"Have you tried to ask your father?"
"No, why would I do that? I can't tell my father any of this."
"I think he might have the answer. If we don't have information about your disease, it's because of your mother. She didn't want to tell us how she was related to the Plegians. If someone knows things about her, it's Chrom."
"No. I have to find a cure without telling him" Morgan stated.
"That would take more time. I hope we can count with it."
"We will."
"Well, I don't want to waste more of your time. I guess you need to change your hair as soon as possible" Libra mentioned while opening the door. Morgan pressed his hood against his head, trying to cover more his hair.
He looked inside the frame door, there were a stair that led to a basement. Morgan went downstairs slowly. It was little gloomy in there. He arrived at a creepy laboratory. With tons of tables with different books, ingredients, containers. He even saw a skull. He couldn't understand how that could be under an orphanage. If he, as a teenager, was kind of scared, he couldn't imagine how a kid would feel if it saw this.
"Well, well. If it isn't Robin's child" a tenebrous woman said.
"Hello, Tharja" Morgan greeted her. Tharja was a woman in black revealing clothes that matched her dark hair and aura.
"What are you doing here?" she didn't sound happy to see Morgan.
"I have a problem" Morgan said while revealing his blue hair.
"I see. Well, this won't be long" Tharja said.
Tharja made Morgan to sit in a chair. Then, she took some herbs and flowers and started to grind them in a morter.
"Lord of the darkness, allow me to change who wants to be changed" she muttered while using the peddle.
Her experiment ended in a black bunch of dust. Tharja took all the dust with a hand, then she approached Morgan.
"Are you ready?" she asked Morgan when she was in front of him.
"Ready" Morgan answered.
Tharja blew the dust at Morgan's head. A black smoke covered Morgan's head, he started to cough because of that. When the smoke disappeared, Morgan's hair was black again.
Tharja took a mirror and gave it to Morgan. He watched himself and feel satisfied with the result.
"Thank you, Tharja"
"Whatever. I'm curious, how did you manage to remove the spell?" Tharja asked.
"I made a beverage with pure water and magic dust" Morgan answered.
"I see. Well, be more careful next time."
"I'll be" Morgan promised.
"I have been analyzing your disease. I think it is a curse."
"How do you get rid of a curse?" Morgan asked.
"With another curse, or maybe with a holy intervention. I'll continue with my investigation. If I find something, I'll let you know."
"Thanks, Tharja."
"Yeah, whatever. You can go now." Tharja said and then she took a book and started to read.
"Yes, goodbye" said Morgan.
Morgan went upstairs. Libra was still there.
"I see that it worked" Libra commented.
"Yes, thank you very much for everything" Morgan told him.
"Whatever you need, you can count with us" Libra said.
After saying goodbye to Libra, Morgan left the orphanage. In the streets, he remembered what happened with Lucina earlier, and again the anguish took over him. He didn't want to return to the castle, but he just learnt that is not good to run away from your problems.
While walking towards the castle, Morgan couldn't focus on what was going on around him. He was thinking about his pain and how everything was ruined now.
When he arrived at the castle, he saw Inigo and Lucina talking in the gardens.
"Hey, Morgan!" Inigo called him while waving his hand.
Morgan just stayed frozen. He suddenly thought that he didn't deserve to be on Inigo's presence. What hurt him the most was that Inigo seemed to be happy whenever he saw him. But then again, there was Lucina. She was looking at Morgan with hatred.
Without saying any word or showing any emotion, Morgan just walked in another direction.
"Uh? What was that?" Inigo asked concerned.
"I don't know. Maybe he doesn't want to talk" Lucina answered. She crossed her arms.
"That's not right. I think something happened to him" said a worried Inigo. He was about to follow Morgan, but Lucina stopped him.
"No!" she exclaimed while placing her hand on Inigo's shoulder.
"Lucina, what is going on?" Inigo was suspicious of his sister's behavior.
"It would be better I you don't bother him now. If he is your friend, he will talk to you" Lucina told him.
"I don't know why you are suddenly doubting him. But I'll do what you want just to show you that he is my friend."
Morgan arrived to his room. He closed the door abruptly and jumped into his bed. Once he was lying with his face down, he started to cry.
"You are such a disgrace" Lucina's voice echoed in Morgan's mind.
"I'm sorry mother. I failed you" he muttered between sobs.
Then, his mind went at the exact moment where he made a promise.
A seven years old Morgan was sitting on Robin's lap. Both of them were on a couch in a comfy living room. The room was being illuminated by the sunlight. Outside the windows only nature could be seen.
"And that's how you father defeated the evil dragon Grima" Robin finished to tell her story.
"Wow! Father is such an amazing warrior. I can't wait to meet him!" and excited Morgan said.
Robin's face turned a bit sad.
"Morgan, we have already talked about this. You can't meet your father because you are a secret" Robin reminded her son.
"I don't like to be a secret" Morgan complained.
"I know, sweetie. But it has to be like this. Do you love your father, right?"
"Yes, I love him as much as I love you… well, maybe I love you a little bit more" Morgan assured, making his mother laugh.
"Well, then, we need to protect your father from all the pain and problems that we can cause him if we go to see him. Do you understand?"
"Not at all. You said that his other family and his people would hate him. But I don't understand why."
Robin looked at other side, it wasn't easy for her to say what she was about to say.
"Because a man can't have two families. It is not correct."
Morgan meditated his mother's words, then, his innocent mind got into a conclusion:
"So, am I a mistake? I shouldn't exist?" when Morgan asked that, Robin immediately looked at him again. Robin saw the sadness in Morgan's eyes, so she embraced her son.
"Oh, no. It's not like that. Of course you should exist. You are my little angel. You are what I have been waiting for my whole life. Don't say that again or you will make me sad."
"Okay, mother" Morgan answered, but he wasn't completely sure of what his mother said.
"Morgan, could you promise that you will always protect your father's honor by keeping the secret?"
"I promise" Morgan swore.
"Thanks, you are such a good boy."
Morgan remembered that after that, his mother tried to avoid the subject again. She occasionally would say something about his father, and then apologize and change the topic as fast as she could. He doesn't blame her, in fact, he admires her for her strength of keeping him as a secret. And that made him feel like if he was throwing all her efforts into the trash.
That night Morgan couldn't sleep. He was drowning in a flood of cruel thoughts and self-pity. He even wondered why he should keep fighting. Eventually, the morning arrived, and he had to prepare himself for another day. Would he be capable to maintain Lucina's conditions? He didn't know, but he was sure that he would try his best.
Thanks for reading!
This was difficult for me to write because I love so much when Lucina and Morgan are good siblings, but I love drama too.
Happy Chrobin week to everyone!
Special thanks to:
Deuce: I'm glad that everything is clear now, you can ask me other things if you want :) . I hope you liked this chapter.
Mysterous guest #1: I'm sorry but Female Morgan does not exist in this story. The death sister mentioned is the sister of the sorcerer that was killed in the first chapter. I'm glad that you enjoy Inigo and Morgan's relationship. Thanks for your comment!
Yellowhello1: Thanks for your comment! Chrom always takes radical decisions when Robin isn't around.
Littleleine: Thank you very much :') As I've told you before, for my is truly an achievement to touch someone's heart with my writing. I hope this chapter doesn't break your heart.
