The Deville You Know Ch14
Sonya woke from a deep sleep the next morning feeling rested and calm. She stretched as she recollected what she first thought was the most wonderful dream. Suddenly her brain clicked back in and she realised it wasn't a dream. This wasn't the good sensation it should have been as Sonya became aware that she was alone in the bed.
"Oh please no." Sonya said to herself as she kicked the sheets away and scrambled herself upright. She checked the nightstand but, unlike last time, there was no note left. It wasn't a lot of comfort as Sonya looked around the room, panic rising as there was no sign of Paige.
"Hello?" She called out.
"Be out in a second!" The accent coming from the bathroom was unmistakable. Sonya let out a long breath and collapsed down on the bed, hands on her head. She didn't hear the bathroom door open.
"What's wrong?" Paige asked, standing over her, still wearing her shirt from the previous night.
"Nothing, it's stupid." Sonya said quickly and moved back to the head of the bed.
"Come on. I wish I'd talked to you about stuff sooner. Don't make my stupid mistakes... You know what I mean." Paige quickly added the last sentence.
"You'll think I'm stupid." Sonya said.
Paige joined her on the bed and got close. "If you were that sensible, I doubt I'd be here." She said jokingly.
"Ok fine, I thought you'd bailed on me again." Sonya threw her arms up in frustration.
Paige laughed, which didn't get a great reaction. "I guess I deserved that. I just went to the bathroom. I thought I'd managed not to wake you up, and I'd slip back under the sheets before you did. I guess I blew that."
"Yeah, you did, but you're still here, so everything else is irrelevant." Sonya said, calming down.
"Well I am going burst your bubble there, I'll have to go soon. I got media a lot of today. 4 different radio interviews and an appearance. First ones at ten. Actually, what is the time now, my phone's in my room and I'll need to start getting ready soon."
Sonya grabbed her phone off the night stand and when she saw the time she went wide eyed." Er, Paige, it's nearly half nine."
"What!?" Was all the response Sonya got. Paige lent off the bed and grabbed her jeans, pulling them on with all force. She grabbed her shirt, since she still had Sonya's T-shirt on, and headed for the door.
Sonya had gotten up too, in case she could help, but Paige was all but a blur. She lent on the desk, bummed out about how the night had ended. However, before the hotel room door had fully closed, Paige rushed back in and right up to Sonya who stood up again.
"You ok? Forgotten something?"
"Yeah, this." Paige said, as she put her arms around Sonya and lent in, looking for a kiss. Sonya wasn't going to stop her and Paige's lips met hers with force.
Paige planted another couple of kisses on Sonya's lips before pulling back. "I've really got to go, thank goodness it's radio first right?" She laughed.
"You look beautiful." Sonya said, still reeling from the kiss.
"Well, if you're my girlfriend, you have to say that right?"
Hearing that was more meaningful than the kiss to Sonya, suddenly feeling a lot more confident. To her, it was the first real symbol of their relationship, as they'd kissed before. "Damn straight I am." She replied.
"Well I hope that means I'm going to see you later too?" Paige said with a smirk, knowing the answer.
"You couldn't stop me." Sonya said.
Paige gave Sonya one last lingering look and smile before turning and really leaving. Sonya made a mental picture of that smile, as it made her heart skip a beat. She returned to her bed and looked through her own schedule for the week, which she knew was less packed than Paige's, but being her first Wrestlemania, she really wanted to absorb the atmosphere with the fans rather than be doing radio and tv interviews, she looked forward to Axxess most of all.
A little later, Sonya had listened to two of Paige's radio interviews, she thought that would keep her in Paige's good books, and was reading an email about details for the Hall of Fame ceremony sent out to all of them when there was a knock at the door.
"She can't be back already." Sonya said to herself as she went to answer it. When she opened the door she found herself looking at a very unhappy face.
"You're still alive then." Mandy said, walking into the room with a loud huff.
"Yeah, I'm good, but what's got you so mad?" Sonya closed the door and joined her friend in the room.
"You promised to text me last night! I waited up as long as I could, till I basically passed out, just in case you needed me." Mandy ranted.
Sonya felt herself shrivel down. She realised right away that Mandy was right. "Oh my god, I'm sorry. I did say that."
"Yeah, you did. I left you in a real state, and I didn't want to leave you at all. If you hadn't promised to text, I wasn't going to leave you alone with her. I was going out of my mind. I was ready to come back and break this door down before I fell asleep. I stopped myself because I told myself again and again that your message would come through any minute. I woke up late, and still nothing. I just...arrrrrhh!" Mandy exclaimed loudly, her frustration boiling over.
Sonya sat down on the bed, looking down. "I'm sorry. I don't know what else to say."
Mandy took a second, seeing that Sonya genuinely felt bad at her memory lapse. She realised suddenly that this may not have been the only reason she was sad. She sat down with her. "It's ok. I was just worried about you. Now come on, talk to me about last night."
"Well..." Sonya said with a bit of swagger in her tone, but suddenly realised that she had promised to keep things between her and Paige. There was no way she was going to break that trust, especially not when she had only just got her. She had to think fast. "It, well it, went ok?" She attempted.
"What are you talking about, 'it went ok'?" Mandy wasn't impressed with the ambivalence of the answer.
"What? It was. It went, you know, fine."
"In what world could you possibly be just fine? If you two are over, you'd be devastated. Like you were on the verge of last night. If you were still together, you'd be cartwheeling round the hotel. There's no 'fine' here Sonya. No 'ok' either. Why are you lying to me?"
Sonya was hurt by Mandy's words. She didn't want to keep her best friend in the dark, but she didn't want to break her word to her new girlfriend, knowing what proving herself untrustworthy would mean to Paige. She decided to stick to her present course. "Mandy, I'm not lying. I just need time to process things." She said, but even she heard how bad it sounded as soon as she said it.
Mandy tensed up. She closed her eyes and shook her head. Her attempts to stay calm were futile, but she managed not to raise her voice. "I can't believe you right now. What have I done that you can't talk to me anymore. I've been there for you all the way, through your breakup, your crush on Paige and much more before all that. I don't deserve to be blown off. I'm here for you still Sonya, but only when you're ready to let me. Until then, forget it. When you're ready to talk to me, text me, if you remember how." Mandy got up and left the room. She regretted the last shot she took, it was catty, but she had been left disappointed and angry with Sonya and she at least could be sure she knew it.
Sonya sat staring into space for a while, then tried to rationalise with herself that Mandy was just blowing off steam, and she'd be ok later. She tried to send a text a little later.
I'm really sorry. We're ok right?
The response was quick.
Mandy: We have a meet and greet with fans Thursday evening at Axxess. I'll be professional and friendly for the fans. The rest is up to you.
The message was hard for Sonya to take. She felt trapped and alone in that moment. She knew she couldn't say anything to Mandy so going to find her was a waste of time. She just had to hope that she'd calm down and let it go, even if it took till Thursday.
There was another knock on the door later. Sonya held out a small hope that it would be Mandy, but when she opened it, Paige came into the room with a mission, and a big smile
"That was exhausting. I've been all round this city, like the worlds fastest sightseeing trip. 5 stops in almost as many hours."
"It all went ok?" Sonya asked, but without much enthusiasm. Paige didn't pick up on the issue at this moment.
"Yeah, fine. Job done, but I'm glad I'm back. I missed you though." Paige said, getting close. She kissed Sonya's lips, but felt no reciprocation. She immediately pulled back. "What's wrong?"
Sonya sat there, trying to find the words, just as she had with Mandy. Paige stepped back, suddenly unsure about things. "Sonya? Come on babygirl, talk to me." For some reason, the pet name did something to Sonya and she couldn't stop a small smile.
"Babygirl?"
"What? I call loads of people that." Paige said, which Sonya knew to be true, making the smile disappear. "But it can be yours if you want it."
Sonya smiled again. "How do you do this to me? I normally hate corny nicknames. I even called you honey last night."
"Well it's yours now, although I may shorten it sometimes. You can even call me honey if you want. We just won't do it in public though." The reminder of the fact they aren't telling anyone put Sonya's mind back to Mandy and again, the smile fell. "What did I say?" Paige asked.
"Nothing, it's not your fault, I just, I had a fight with Mandy."
"Really? I never would have guessed that. You two are like, inseparable most of the time. Why did you have a fight?" Paige sat Sonya down on the bed and sat beside her, she held her hand while she asked.
"I was meant to text her after we talked last night, but I forgot."
"That's it? You were more than a bit sidetracked. If you'd said 'stop, I have to text Mandy, I imagine I'd have been a bit put out."
Sonya found herself feeling better. "I bet you would. But it really pissed her off. And when I wouldn't tell her what happened last night, she was hurt, she got mad at me and left."
"Because you wanted to keep this to yourself? What's wrong with her? You want me to go see her?" Paige wasn't happy seeing Sonya upset.
"No, don't. It's my problem. Mandy's hurts because she's been there for me through my problems with Chloe, my ex. She helped me a lot when I had to make a tough decision, choosing my career over her. Thank goodness she did, or I would have missed all of this, including you."
"I'm pretty glad you made that choice too. We both got away from bad relationships at about the same time it seems, then we met up again. You think there's was some cosmic force bringing us together?" Sonya felt Paige lean her head against hers, while she stroked Sonya's hair, trying to be comforting, but it wasn't much help to her at that moment in time.
"Very true. I nearly went the other way, if not for Mandy. I thought I loved her, but I was wrong. I was ready to give it all up. Would have been a stupid decision., for so many reasons. Mandy was such a good friend. No wonder she's mad now I wouldn't talk to her."
Paige stopped at hearing that. She was hating hearing the woman she cared about hurt this much. She could also see that there was only one thing that she could do to fix things. "Sonya, do you want to tell her about us?" She asked, quietly, as she found the concept tough to think about.
"No, I can't, I mean, I promised you." Sonya stuttered.
"I know you promised me, and it means so much to me that you did. I'm not saying to go out and tell the world, just her. If this comes between the two of you, then you will end up resenting me, and we won't have a chance."
"But I didn't tell her because I thought breaking your trust would mean the same thing."
"This isn't you going behind my back, but it shows how I know I can trust you." Paige kissed Sonya's cheek, and they looked at each other.
"You're really willing to do this for me?" Sonya asked.
Paige nodded, taking a moment to respond. "I'm nervous, and although I like you a huge amount, I never wanted to replace Mandy in your life. If this will fix it, and you think we can trust her, then it's ok."
Sonya moved in close and hugged her girlfriend. "Thank you." She whispered in her ear.
Paige held her back for a while. "Do you want me to be here when you tell her, or make myself scarce?"
"No stay, I want you here with me, if you don't mind?" Sonya could sense Paige's concerns.
"Ok, but you'll have to do the talking. I'm not ready for that. This is going to be the weirdest thing this team has done."
"Yeah, but at least I won't be fighting with my teammates in the ring again." Sonya said, making Paige facepalm.
"Oh god, don't remind me. So stupid. Go on, call her."
Sonya grabbed her phone and typed out a text, asking Mandy to come back to her room, and she would explain.
Mandy was knocking at the door less than fifteen minutes later. She gave nothing more than a stern greeting as she came inside, but she did a big double take she she saw that her and Sonya were not the only ones in the room.
"Paige, why are you here? I thought Sonya called me over to talk." Mandy said, confused.
"I did, but I needed her to be here too." Sonya pulled out the chair in the room and gestured for her friend to sit down, which was done. "Mandy look, I am really sorry I didn't tell you this before, but I hope you will understand when we finish explaining?"
"Wait, we?" Mandy asked.
"Yes, we, because Paige and I are 'we' now. Last night we talked as you know, and the bottom line is that, well, we got together, properly."
"Really?" Mandy asked. Looking from Sonya to Paige. She saw the look in both of them that they weren't making it up to get her back onside, like she had thought may happen. She jumped up and hugged Sonya, before making her way to Paige with another hug. "You guys! Why didn't you just say so? Did you think I wouldn't be happy for you? I've been wanting you to get together since the night after we started on Raw! This is so great!"
"Mandy, slow down." Sonya said, but she had to hold her friend by the arms to achieve it. "Of course I knew you'd be happy, but I didn't tell you because Paige and I had agreed to tell nobody, and I didn't want to break my promise."
"Um, Ok." Mandy's response was far more withdrawn. "I get it, but did you think you couldn't trust me or something?"
"No, of course not."
"Sonya, let me." Paige interjected, her anxious tone not giving any chance for Sonya to object. "You can be mad if you want, but at me, not her. I asked her not to say a word. But it's not her fault ok. I'm not ready to come out yet. She said we can trust you to keep this secret. I believe her, but she's right, right?"
Mandy too, heard the concern in her voice, and she tried to look comforting. "If you don't want me to, then I won't. It's not my news to share with anybody. Just, don't start trying to sneak around. The harder you try not to get caught, the quicker you will."
"Good advice. I guess that means no sneaking into arena broom closets for a quick fumble." Sonya said, laughing. Paige rolled her eyes, but she smirked, even though she wouldn't admit it.
"So I'm the only one who knows?" Mandy asked, to a nod from Paige. "What about Renee? She did almost as much as me to make sure this match happened."
"If you want to honey, you can." Sonya said.
"Honey?" Mandy said in surprise.
"Shut up." Paige said, but it was clear she didn't mean it. "I don't think so. If I tell her, she can't keep it from Dean. If he knows, you don't think he will tell Seth and Roman? Then we are off to the races and I might as well sacrifice myself an the altar of social media!" She got more and more vocal as she went on and eventually sat back on the bed with her hands on her head.
Sonya went over to Paige. "Honey. It's ok. I get how scared you are, but eventually this will come out. We will do everything we can to make it last until you're ready, but people will find out. You want the people you care about to find out from you. Look what happened with me and Mandy today, because I wouldn't talk to her, plus, you want to have someone to talk to about me don't you?"
Paige laughed, and she took her hands away. "You're right. I'm sorry this happened with you two because of me."
"It's all fine now, don't beat yourself up, about any of this. Just be happy, and most importantly, you treat my best friend like she deserves." Mandy said, pretending to stand tough, folding her arms in front of her.
Sonya laughed. "You can't pull off the mean girl act with me you know."
"And you have nothing to worry about." Paige said getting up. "I'm serious about this. I wouldn't have let it get this far if I wasn't."
"Me too." Sonya said as she looked into Paige's eyes, going to her and kissing her with feeling.
"Ok, I don't need to see my two teammates making out with each other." Mandy threw her hands up and averted her eyes. "I'm out of here. Sonya, I'll see you tomorrow sometime?"
"Sure, I will take you to lunch." Sonya said."
"You two have fun. I'm going to try and meet Renee. I guess I've got a hard conversation to have."
"You sure?" Sonya asked.
"Yeah, I mean, if you're going to complain about me to Mandy..." Sarcasm dripped from Paige's tone.
"Right, that's definitely my cue. See you." Mandy said and headed out. Sonya saw her out.
"This can't get out of hand. I've got to stay away from another big social media bomb." Paige said when Sonya came back.
"It won't. We are telling our closest friends. That's it. We just have to keep things professional at work. Which sucks, because this week is all work. We didn't time this brilliantly did we."
"It's fine. If you're thinking the same way I am, we've got a long future together." Paige felt herself go red.
Sonya loved hearing that she went up, put her arms around Paige and kissed her again. "A very long future. Do you want to stay here again tonight? I've got another long shirt."
"It's hard to say no to you when you're wrapped around me." Paige said, now with her own arms around her new girlfriend. "But not tomorrow. I've got a late night and an early start, and a long day with fans, before the Hall of Fame."
"Ok, well we will probably be sat together at the Hall of Fame right. They cut to superstars all the time."
"I imagine so." Paige said, a little put off by shop talk when they had their arms round each other.
"Well, we could call it a date right? I know we will have to keep things professional, but nobody else needs to know."
"If you want me to, you'll have to ask me better than that." Paige said, trying to be playful.
"Fine. Paige, will you please be my date to the Hall of Fame?"
"Nah."
"Hey!" Sonya gave Paige a playful shove. The two of them laughed, and fell onto the bed together.
"Sonya, I'll be your date anywhere." Paige said, and the two began kissing, lasting until they couldn't stay awake any longer. Paige fell asleep in her clothes, and Sonya made sure she was comfortable before getting herself ready to sleep, watching her girlfriend until her own eyes fell closed.
A.N.: Thanks for reading, and thanks to those who reviewed, as well as followed or favourited.
I want to send my best wishes to Sonya, and to Mandy as well. They went through a terrible experience that nobody should ever have to go through. The person responsible should have the book thrown at him.
I also hope Sonya is just taking a break, and this 'loser leaves' rule is just a cover for it, not something permanent.
Hall Of Fame next chapter, a new challenge for me. Hopefully it won't be too far away. Do you think it will all go smoothly?
