Otis

The chime of my phone draws me out of my pillow fight with Eric. After footloose ended, with the house to ourselves he thought it would be a good idea to attack me with a fluffy pillow and draw me into a battle for the ages. One of the glasses full of Pepsi was the only casualty of the ferocious war that ensued. We held a temporary truce to pay tribute to our fallen comrade before starting the battle again. My phone chimed with a notification, and I go over to check who it's from. It's from Maeve.

'Is it Maeve?' Eric asks.

'No it's the tooth fairy.' I reply.

Eric kisses his teeth and ignores my reply. 'What did she say?' he presses.

'Nothing, I haven't read it yet' I say, and open the text. 'I'm flying now, text when I land. Love u' it reads.

I still get that buzz, that spark inside whenever she texts. The way she makes me feel is a way that no one else can make me feel. The way she entered my heart, burrowed her way in there with her usual ferociousness and her fiery nature was strangely alluring. Everyone has their own aphrodisiac, and mine was her. I'm not even sure if an entire person can be classed as an aphrodisiac, but that's what she was to me. I loved her and she loved me.

'Awww' says Eric, as I realise he'd been reading my text while I had been having my little inner monologue. I see him type in something and I lunge and grab my phone back from him, but before he's clicked send. I frantically look at what he's sent. 'Love U 2 Babes' it reads. I immediately delete it, send another one saying 'Have a safe flight, I love you too.' I nudge Eric's laughing frame after putting my phone down and I grab my pillow, arming myself, ready for the impending conflict.

Eric

We collapsed, exhausted after the fight we had just had. It was a monumental battle for the ages. We had just been lost in the moment, the fun we just had was unrivalled. It reminded me of the times before Maeve and the clinic and Adam and everything. When it was just us against the world. Of course, I was happy for Otis, it seemed like he had genuinely found the love of his life, his person for forever in Maeve. The way he had been able to find the love of his life after going through so much with her was amazing. But I missed the times when it had been us, when we were younger. The world has become so much more complicated, so much faster, so much more heartless. And I feel that it's my job to give it some heart, to give it the action it needs and deserves. I hear Otis' phone ring and see that it's Jakob's number. I give it to him.

'Thanks' he mouths to me and heads into the kitchen to speak to him.

I never noticed the décor of the Milburn house is very warm. The levels of light in each room are very soft on the eyes, it's very comforting. Much like Jean to be frank. Otis comes back into the room, his face white as a sheet, sweat on his forehead.

'What's up, Otis' I say, worry in my voice.

'Something's not right with mum' he says blankly.
