Chapter 8
Kate's P.O.V.
Me and Diana were cleaning the living room at 6am when I saw an envelope passing through the front door of our apartment.
"Diana?" I called my sister, when she turned at me I pointed at the envelope.
I was closer to the door, so I picked the envelope, which were actually two, and opened the door to see who left them. But, when I looked at both sides of the hallway, I didn't saw anyone. Therefore, I went inside our apartment.
"Who was it?" Diana questioned me confused.
"I don't know. They have our names on it" I said when I turned the envelopes and saw our names.
"This one is for you" I hesitantly handover one envelope to my sister.
We opened them and when I saw the pictures inside my envelope I couldn't breathe, my eyes filled with tears and I raised a hand to my mouth in shock.
Twenty-two years old memories filled my mind as I kept looking at the photos of my dead parents.
I let the photos fall out from my hands as I sat on the floor, pulling my knees to my chest. I felt Diana next to me, hugging me and whispering calming words as my tears kept falling. I don't really know how long we stay this way.
When I managed to compose myself I faced Diana who had a worried and sad look on her face.
"What is in your envelope?" I asked softly to my sister.
"Photos of my parents" she answered darkly. I look at the table where her envelope was and saw the photos, which showed Diana's parents dead.
"I'm sorry, D" I hugged my sister.
After our hug, Diana pulled us up, wiped my tears and ordered strong "You need to go to work and I will found out who did this".
"I won't let go alone" I contradicted.
"I'm just going to talk with Gillian. She isn't dangerous. I will meet you at the lab when you get out" Diana said don't leaving space for discussion.
"Ok. But you better be careful" I said worried.
I did as Diana told me: I get dressed and went to work. When I arrived to the lab I found Miriam and Matthew already there.
"Good morning" I said softly.
"Good morning, Kate" they answered at the same time.
I sat at a table next to Miriam and behind Matthew's table and picked up the files from I stayed yesterday. Uau! I can't believe it's been only 24 hours! From everything that happened it feels like a lifetime ago.
I was reading for about twenty minutes when Marcus got in.
"Good morning!" he said with a huge smile on his face.
"You're late" Matthew only pointed to Marcus who face him.
"It was a huge line!" he answered, holding his hand up and making me notice the cup of coffee.
"We don't drink coffee" Miriam pointed serious.
"I never said it was for one of us" Marcus said referring to vampires. Then he walked to me and handed me over the coffee as he said with a smile "It's for you".
I hesitantly picked up the cup, surprised by Marcus' gesture "Thank you, Marcus".
He gave me one of his brilliant smiles as he sat next to me, making me do something I never though it will be possible today: smile. It was small, but it was a smile.
I was in the lab for about two hours when, suddently, Marcus questioned worried from his seat next to me "Kate, are you alright?"
"Yes, I am" I answered trying to be convincing "Why do you ask?"
"Because you have been staring at the same page for twenty minutes" Marcus pointed out serious.
"And you haven't made any questions" Miriam said, surprising me. I really didn't think that she would notice as she was so focus on her work.
"Or presented your theories" Matthew pointed, moving in his set so he could face me.
I was indecisive, for one side I really didn't want to remember all that happened in my early life, but for the other they are part of this supernatural world and of my life now. Besides, I didn't forgot Miriam's questions about my name and specie.
Knowing that they would find out sooner or later, I decided to tell them.
I sighed before I started talking, noticing that they were still looking at me carefully.
"The reason why my last name is Williams not Bishop and why I'm not a witch is because I'm not Diana's biological sister. I'm adopted" I reveled surprising my vampire colleagues.
"What happened to your family?" Miriam questioned me breaking the silence and getting a look from Matthew.
"I lived with my parents in a small town of the United States. One night a coven of witches arrived to our town" I started after I took a beep breathe "They practiced dark magic which required… human sacrifices" I started, hesitating for a second and I felt Marcus tense next to me.
"My parents woke me up in the middle of the night. I was only six, I didn't understand what was happening" I reflected for a second "But neither did my parents. They just pick me up and runned".
"We tried to leave town, but we couldn't get out. There was barrier. They made sure that no one could scape" the screams, the blood everywhere and the nauseous smell of burned flesh dominated my mind, pulling me into a spiral of pain.
I was pulled off it by Marcus' hand in mine. I looked into his dark eyes, seeing worry and sadness in them, and I squeezed his hand as I kept talking.
"Emily and Sarah, Diana's aunts, saved my life" I said with a small smile "They raised me and Diana like we were their daughters, that's why I consider Diana my sister".
Matthew was the first to break a long silence "Diana's parents…" he didn't finished his question but I totally understood what he was asking me.
"They were killed by humans" I answered to Matthew and then added "Today we received photos of the murder of our parents".
"Who send them?" Marcus questioned tense, between teeth.
"We don't know, someone left two envelopes in our door" I explained and I think I heard him growl frustrated.
"Take the rest of the day off, Kate" Matthew said and before I could disagree he continued "You should be with your family today".
I saw Marcus and Miriam nodding in agreement and, despite my hesitation, I agreed, today I couldn't really focus on work.
I got out of the lab and called Diana, we agreed to meet next a small café. When we meet, she questioned worried "Hey. Are you ok, Kate?"
"I told Matthew, Miriam and Marcus about my parents" I answered and Diana pulled me into a hug.
After we apart, I took a deep breath and questioned, changing the subject "So, how was the talk with Gillian?"
"She said she didn't send them. When I accused Knox, Gillian didn't believe. She claimed she didn't know where he was" Diana told me.
"She is lying, she one of his minions" I disagreed angry.
"The worst thing was that she was more interested about the book than the pain Knox caused us" my sister said with sadness in her eyes.
"So, what are we going to do?" I questioned my older sister.
"I gonna take the book!" she answered confident.
"Really?" I asked surprise for Diana finally take a stand. After she nodded in agreement I said starting to walk in the Bod's direction "Ok. Let's go!"
When we arrived the library was empty, probably because students and teachers were having lunch. Fortunately, Sean was there.
"Hey, Sean. I need to get a book. Ashmole 782" Diana asked him.
"People have been asking for him all week" he commented and then revealed something that shocked us "It's missing".
"What? How?" I questioned surprised changing a look with my sis.
"I don't know" he answered me and then looked at Diana "The last person who had it was you".
"I returned it" my sister defended.
"Yes, I remember it. It's odd" Sean agreed.
"Then it got to be there. Can you check again?" she asked him.
"Just for us, please" I asked Sean sweetly, giving him puppy eyes.
"I will have a look. Give me a few minutes" he gave in, leaving us alone as he went to look for the Ashmole.
"Thank you, Sean" my sister appreciated before he could really leave.
We were waiting for Sean to return when I noticed a change in my sister, she got tense and started turn around. I did too and we face Peter Knox.
"We will wait together, shall we?" he asked and me and Diana noticed the witches emerging from the shadows.
"Gillian though you may take the book out" Knox told us when he saw us looking at Gillian "You see she understand his importance to us".
"You send us those photographs" Diana accused walking towards Knox.
"I don't want you to end up like Rebecca. Your father made her turn her back to her own kind" Knox said grabbing my sister's arms.
"Get your hands off my sister!" I demanded walking to them.
He free my sister only to raised one of his hand to me. I felt an excruciating pain in my head and I heard a voice. Knox's voice With this biding knot.
"Stop!" I vaguely heard Diana scream but the pain inside my mind prevented me from focus in anything else.
The last thing I saw before I passed out was Knox evil smile.
3ª P.O.V.
"KATE! KATE!" Diana screamed kneeling next to Kate when the brunette fell to the ground.
See her little sister passed out, hurted by a monster like Peter Knox triggered something in the young witch, an energy, a power that runned through her body feeded by the rage she felt.
Before Diana could even understand what was happening, a wind started inside the Bodleian. As the blonde got up, papers started flying and chairs moving.
When she turned to face the one that hurt Kate, the wind got stronger and powerful enough to throw the other witches to the floor.
However the use of such old and powerful magic tired Diana, as she didn't had the strength to keep standing. Fortunately, Matthew showed up "Hold on, Diana!"
"Don't hold your breath. Just breathe, Diana!" the vampire advised trying to get closer.
"I got you. You're safe" Matthew said when he managed to hold the blond in his arms.
In his arms Diana finally calmed down and so did the wind.
She faced Matthew and said with urgency "Kate! Knox did something to her".
Matthew and Diana got closer to Kate who was still unconscious.
"I'm gonna call Marcus" the vampire said, picking up his phone, to the blonde who was extremely worried for her sister's well-being.
"Hey, Matthew" Marcus answered the phone.
"Marcus, I need you at the Bodleian. Kate is unconscious" Matthew said with quickly.
"What!? What happened?" the younger vampire questioned scared for Kate.
"Knox happened" Matthew said angry watching Diana touching her sister's hair while begged her to wake up.
"I will be there in a minute" Marcus told him, hanging up.
But Marcus didn't take a minute, in a few seconds he kneeled next to Kate, scaring Diana.
"We need to take her out of here" Marcus said looking at Matthew after checking Kate.
Matthew nodded in agreement looking at the witches who were trying to recover from Diana's attack. He helped Diana getting up and Marcus picked Kate up at bride style.
Marcus layed Kate on her bed, covering her with a blanket and he couldn't help himself from smiling when he saw the red rose he gave her in a little vase on top of her bedside table.
The vampire checked the brunette's vitals again and sit next to her bed.
Several hours had passed when Marcus finally left Kate's bedside to find Matthew packing Diana and Kate's clothes in suitcases.
"Is she ok?" Marcus questioned to Matthew about Diana.
"No, she is exhausted" he answered.
"Not surprising. Witch wind" the younger vampire commented "I called Miriam. She took care of the Bodleian".
Matthew nodded and then said prepared to leave "If she wakes up, tell her I return soon".
"Where are you going?" Marcus questioned curious about what would make Matthew leave Diana's side.
"I'm going to find Peter Knox" he answered serious.
"If you make a move on him, it will be seen was a direct challenge to the Congregation" Marcus said alarmed.
"He send her those photographs. His sent was all over it" Matthew told him angry and then added, trying to affect Marcus "He send those photos to Kate".
"I know that" Marcus said, his calm falling to reveal his boiling anger "Do you think I don't want to go after him for making her suffer?"
His explosion surprised Matthew, who never saw Marcus so angry before, he usually is so happy and relaxed.
"But start a war with witches would only put Kate in danger. And I can't risk that!" Marcus said recovering some of his calm.
"Besides, if you do that you will be putting our family in danger" the younger vampire added.
"Are you questioning my loyalty?" Matthew inquired to his son.
"I'm questioning your judgment! Think before you do this. Take Diana out of Oxford but don't take on Knox" he advised.
"I never felted so protective for someone" Matthew reveled gently watching Diana sleep.
"You can protect her without causing a shit storm. Leave her with Hamish in Scotland. Leave her at Woodstock" Marcus advised again, understanding how his father was feeling. He felt the same for Kate.
"No. I will take her to Sept-Tours" Matthew told him.
"What?! You can't put Ysabeau thought that. You can't leave a witch in her house" Marcus said shocked, knowing how badly his grandmother will react.
"It's my house too. And I'm not leaving her there, I'm going with her" Matthew said leaving the apartment.
When Diana woke up, Marcus was in Kate's room and Matthew was back inside the apartment looking out the window.
Diana sit on her bed, startled and asked Matthew worried "Where is Kate? Is she ok?"
"Kate is fine. She still asleep. Marcus is with her".
Matthew said, making Diana sighed with relief "Thank God".
Now that she knew that her sister was safe, Diana calmed down and asked curious to the vampire "What time is it?"
"Five o'clock. You have been asleep for seven hours. You were exhausted because of the witch wind" he told her.
"Witch wind?" the blonde witch questioned confused.
"No witch was summand it for centuries. You have to leave Oxford" Matthew said serious.
"No, I can't leave. I have a paper to finish and Kate works in your lab. Our lives are here" Diana contradicted the vampire.
"Peter Knox will come after you. He will come after Kate" Matthew said serious.
"I can deal with Peter Knox. I can protect my sister" the blonde claimed convicted.
"Not yet, you can't" he disagreed "Your power is extraordinary, but it is undisciplined. You have to come with terms with it in a safe place".
"I can go to my aunts" Diana suggested.
"No. No, I will take you with me to France. No witch would dare trespassing on vampire land" Matthew said and then added, surprising the women "And Kate is going to stay with Marcus. She will be safe there".
"I'm not going to leave Kate!" the blonde contradicted Matthew, angry with his suggestion of her leave without her little sis.
"The only reason why Knox attacked Kate was because he wants you to give him the book. Knox is focused in you. Kate will be safer if you leave" Matthew said.
And despite Diana didn't want to leave her sister, she would do anything to keep her safe, so she agreed.
"Ok. She stays, but at the smallest sigh of dangerous we need to take her out of here" the blonde claimed worried with her little sister's safety.
"Of course, Diana" Matthew agreed, he was also worried with the young Bishop and although he thought that Kate will be safer if she and Diana were apart, he won't hesitate on taking her to Step-Tour if she was in dangerous.
When Kate first opened her eyes she didn't recognized her own bedroom, only when she saw the photos on the wall she realized where she was.
Marcus was at her side the second he realized she was awake "Hey, how are you feeling?" Marcus questioned to Kate worried.
Kate sat on her bed, meeting Marcus' dark eyes and asking confused "What happened?"
"Knox made you faint. Are you ok?" he questioned, gently putting his hand on her left cheek.
"I'm fine, Marcus" Kate assured putting her hand over his.
"Do you remember anything?" the vampire asked cautious.
"I remember hearing his voice inside my head and then a horrible headache" she answered "What time is it?"
"Five thirty. Diana is awake" Marcus told Kate, who became more alert when he talked about her sister.
"Where is she?" the brunette questioned already trying to get out of her bed. Marcus got up too and passed one harm around her waist to help her getting up.
"Thanks" she said once she was steady on her feet. Kate made her way out of her room with Marcus on her heels, finding Diana on her room.
When the blonde heard footsteps, she immediately turned finding her sister on the door of her bedroom. Diana practically runned to her sister and gave Kate a thigh hug "Are you ok? I was so worried!"
"I'm fine, D" the younger one assured rubbing her sister's back.
"I'm so sorry" the blonde apologized giving a small step back and breaking their hug.
"It's not your fault" Kate assured without doubt. But Diana still disagreed.
"Knox hurt you, because I didn't get him the book".
The older sister insisted and Kate was ready to keep arguing with the blonde when Matthew interrupted "We need to take you two to a safe place. I'm taking Diana to my mother's house in France and you're going to stay in Marcus' apartment, Kate".
When she heard Matthew's plans, Kate didn't hesitated in disagreed "No! You can't go to a whole different country without me!"
"Kate, it's safer this way" Diana contradicted and the brunette saw the certainty in her older sister's eyes.
"Fine, but if anything bad happens I'll take the first plane there" Kate claimed, making Diana smile.
"I know. I'll do the same" the blonde said.
After the sisters agreed with the plans, they finished packing and got out.
When Kate, Marcus, Diana and Matthew left the apartment was very dark, the sisters walked side to side, next to their vampires. Matthew extended his hand to Diana who took it without hesitate and Marcus couldn't help himself from doing the same to Kate, the fear of losing her was too big for him to restrain himself.
Kate looked from his hand to Marcus' eyes and, seeing how desperate he looked, she left her own fears and hesitations aside and hold his hand.
For now it was all they needed.
