Chapter 10

3ª P.O.V.

Kate and Marcus got outside Matthew's laboratory. An unusual bright sun blinded the human momentarily.

"So, where do you want to have lunch? Restaurant or in my house?" Marcus said, stopping in front of her and covering the sun.

Kate gave a thankful smile to the vampire and answered "I want to video call Diana, so at home".

"Ok, let's go, I make an amazing risotto" the vampire smiled and they started walking to Marcus' house.

When Kate and Marcus arrived the brunette opened the door with her key and they went to the kitchen prepare their lunch together, although Marcus made most things.

"Oh my god! This is amazing!" the young Bishop exclaimed when she took the first bite.

The vampire smiled cocky "Told you".

They talked during lunch and when they finished, they washed the dishes.

"Go call Diana, I finish this" Marcus said.

"Really?" Kate questioned and after the vampire's nod she thanked him with a kiss on his check "Thanks, Marcus".

The brunette quickly left the kitchen and went upstairs to her room, she sat on her bed with her laptop on top of her legs and started a video call with her sister.

"Hey, sis. Had a good sleep?" Kate questioned to Diana once the older one answered.

"I had a nightmare" the blonde confessed.

"Like the ones with cobwebs?" the younger asked, remembering perfectly the nightmares that started tormenting her older sister a few days ago.

"Yes. And my mom was there too. She looked like in the photos" Diana answered sad.

"I'm so sorry, D" Kate said, understanding her sister's pain. But before she could say anything else a loud sound interrupted announcing a new call.

"It's Sarah" Diana said seeing the name showing up on the screen.

"Answer it. We can talk all together" the brunette said.

"Hi, moms" Kate said when the picture of Emily and Sarah appeared on the screen.

"Hello, sweetie" the older witches complimented their daughter.

"Diana? Where is that?" Emily questioned once she saw the room behind Diana.

"I had to leave Oxford" the blonde revealed to her aunts.

"What? Why?" Sarah questioned shocked.

"Peter Knox treated us" Kate told to her mothers.

"WHAT!? What did he do? Are you ok?" Sarah screamed terrified with the idea of her daughter and niece get hurt.

"He wanted the book, but we won't give it to him. So, he did a spell that made me pass out" the young brunette explained but quickly assured "But, I'm fine now".

"I'm glad you're alright, sweetie. He is very dangerous. He harassed your parents too, Diana. So where are you, honey?" Emily said.

"I'm with Matthew" "I'm in Oxford" Kate and Diana said at the same time, after a second of hesitation.

"Wait, you're not together?" Sarah questioned shocked to the sisters.

"No, I'm living with Marcus. He and Miriam are protecting me" Kate explained.

"Who are whose?" Sarah questioned immediately.

"Marcus is Matthew's son and Miriam is a friend of Matthew. They work with me in Matthew's lab" Kate told to her moms calmly "Don't worry, I'm safe" she assured.

"Where is Matthew taking you, Diana?" Emily questioned to the blonde, once she knew where her daughter was.

"I'm in his mother's house. In France" the blonde reveled.

Sarah and Emily looked at each other terrified "His mother? Ysabeau de Clermont?" Sarah asked shocked.

"Yes. Do you know her?" Diana questioned.

"Listen to me very carefully. You need to get out of there. Now! She as destroyed entire covens. In the 50's and in the 60's. South America. Dozens of witches lost their lives, many of them elderly" Sarah said scared for her niece's safety "She is a witch killer! Come home now, Diana!"

"Mom, Matthew would never let anything bad happened with Diana. He will protect her from everyone. Even from his mother" Kate defended, trying to get her moms to see the truth about Matthew.

"I know why she did that" Diana revealed almost to herself, but her aunts and sister heard and immediately started making questions. However, the blonde quickly said goodbye "I have to go. I'll call you later".

Diana hang up, leaving Kate in the call with Emily and Sarah.

"Do you know what she is talking about, honey?" Emily questioned to her daughter.

"Yes, I do. Diana told me that Matthew's father was killed during the Second World War. The only reason why Ysabeau killed all those witches was because they killed her husband first" Kate told them, shocking her moms who didn't know how to react to this information.

"Well, then I think that we judge her too quickly" Emily claimed and the young brunette smile with her mom's acceptance.

"So, how is Maddison?" the human questioned, changing the subject to something more light.

"Everything is fine. We miss you, sweetie" Sarah answered to her daughter.

"I miss you too. As soon as this calms down, I'll visit you" Kate promised. She really miss her family.

"Now, tell us about your job" Emily asked to her daughter.

"Is going great. I'm really understanding creatures' genetics"

"And how is your schedule, honey? You need to take care of yourself, not just work!" Sarah advised the young brunette.

"I don't just work, mom. And my job was just a part-time, but I work more hours than that so I can spend more time protected by Marcus and Miriam" Kate told her moms.

The young woman kept talking about her job and other ordinary things with her moms for a while, until she hang up because she had to go back to the lab.

Kate and Marcus returned to the lab. They were helping Miriam with some samples, Kate and Miriam were in the same table facing each other and Marcus was in other table.

"Take that out. It's been there long enough" Miriam ordered to Marcus.

After taking the samples out of the centrifuge, Marcus leaned on a table back to them and sighed.

"What's wrong?" Miriam questioned.

The vampires were talking with their backs to each other, Kate could see Miriam's face and Marcus' back.

"I know my results are back" he reveled making Miriam stop what she was doing and stare at a clearly shocked Kate. From her face Miriam realized that the human didn't told to Marcus.

"Why don't you tell me what's in them?" Marcus continued, trying to sound casual.

"No one hands out results without the appropriate testes being run" Miriam pointed "And I need a second opinion from Matthew".

"For fuck sacks, Miriam! Stop buying time!" Marcus exploded, turning and facing Miriam's back and Kate's face "I need to know what happened with James" he continued softer after he saw the surprised look on Kate's face.

Miriam finally faced Marcus and started telling him the results "There are markers in there that we have seen before in other cases of failed siring's".

She was interrupted by the ring tone of Marcus' phone "It's Baldwin".

"Who is that?" Kate questioned confused.

"Matthew's brother. He is a member of the congregation" Miriam explained to the human, leaving her alarmed.

"Baldwin" Marcus said when he answered the call.

"Does Matthew want to cause a war?" Baldwin questioned direct.

"No" Marcus answered like it was the ridiculous thing he ever heard.

"Then explain what the hell he is doing" Baldwin ordered "What was he thinking?"

"Why don't you ask him yourself?" the younger vampire challenged.

"I tried. He is not picking up. Does he have the witch?" the older vampire questioned.

When he heard Marcus' hesitation, Baldwin remembered him of vampire hierarchy "He may be your father, but unfortunately for me, he is also a De Clermont. As head of your family, you can't refuse me"

"Where is he?" Baldwin asked again.

"He is in Step-Tour" Marcus revealed.

"Why would he take a witch to Ysabeau's?" Baldwin questioned intrigued.

"Diana Bishop was threatened by Peter Knox" Marcus told to the old vampire, trying to get him to stand against Knox.

Despite the hate that Baldwin felt for the witch, that wasn't enough for him to use as argument against the other member of the Congregation, so he ordered a more detailed explanation.

"Why would he threat a witch, Marcus?"

"She found the Book of Life" Marcus revealed making Baldwin and Kate sighed. He did it on surprised, she did it in shock. Kate couldn't believe that Marcus as telling everything to the people that were threatening her sister's life.

"She didn't gave it to Knox. That's why he threatened her. Matthew is protecting her" Marcus concluded.

Baldwin, pleased with the explanation, ended the phone call "I'll call if I need to know more".

Marcus sighed when he finally hang up, but his relief ended when he turned and faced Kate. The shocked and angry look in her brown eyes caused a feeling of guilt in Marcus.

"Kate I can explain-" the vampire started, but he was quickly interrupted by the brunette.

"Explain what?! That you just told where my sister is to the people who are threatening her!?" Kate exploded, a deeply strong feeling of protection for her sister behind her anger.

"Baldwin isn't the one who is threatening Diana" Marcus defended.

"Of course not, he is just a member of the organization who does" the brunette said sarcastic.

"I'm sorry, but I had to tell him" the vampire asked almost begging.

"You had to tell him!? Why the hell couldn't you just hung up?" Kate demanded angry.

But Marcus didn't believe that she would accept the vampire dynamic as an excuse, so he didn't answered.

"Unbelievable" the Bishop said to the lack of answer from Marcus, shaking her head and walking away from him.

A deep and uncomfortable silence, caused by Kate and Marcus' discussion, filled the laboratory. Miriam watched her colleagues working in separated tables for the first time since the Bishop started working with them.

When the sun began to fade, dyeing the blue sky with a beautiful orange, Marcus approached Kate's table, catching Miriam's attention.

"Kate, let's go home?" Marcus questioned softly.

"You can go, I have things to finish" the brunette answered without moving her eyes from the computer. She was very upset with the vampire and wanted to delay her return to Marcus' house as much as possible.

"You can't go alone, it's dangerous" he disagreed but Miriam interrupted.

"I'll take her when we finish" the older vampire said, getting a look from Marcus that she ignored.

Marcus sighed and after one last look to the young Bishop, who was still ignoring him, he left the lab.

Kate and Miriam kept working in silence for over an hour, the vampire could almost hear Kate thinking and fell her anger and disappointment.

"He didn't had a choice" she said, surprising the human who quickly raised her head from her work at the sound of Miriam's voice.

"What?" Kate questioned confused about what the vampire was referring to.

"Marcus" the older woman clarified, noticing the human get tense.

"We always have a choice" the brunette contradicted strong.

"It's different for vampires. We are very hierarchical" Miriam explained unusually soft.

"I don't see how that is an excuse to the fact that he could have just hang up" Kate said, an angry tone in her voice.

"Once you become a vampire, you become part of a family. That family has a leader to whom you need to obey" the vampire continued without reacting to what the Bishop said.

"And disobedience isn't tolerated, it often leads to death" Miriam concluded looking closely at Kate.

The revelation that Marcus could get killed if he hadn't told the truth to Baldwin caught Kate off guard and it was enough to make her anger deflate like a balloon.

Miriam watched Kate's expression getting softer and her eyes acquire a sad glow, she continued trying to make her understand Marcus' actions.

"Vampire clans aside, it's good that someone in the congregation besides Knox knows about what's going on".

"Baldwin will reveal to the rest of the members that Knox was planning on keeping the Book of Life to himself" the vampire said and when she saw Kate's eyebrow up she concluded "That alone will be enough to vampires and demons be against Peter Knox".

"How can you be so sure?" the human questioned insecure.

"Because it contains our origins and they will never let a witch put their hands on such important part of our history" Miriam assured to Kate, looking into her eyes.

Miriam decided that there was enough of work for one day and after a moment of deep silence she said "Come on, let's get you home".

Kate only nodded, turned her computer off and grabbed her things.

The two woman walked in silence to Marcus' house, Kate was replaying her talk with Marcus in her head and analyzing all the new information that Miriam gave her.

Miriam watched, with the corner of her eye, the brunette next to her walk with a focused expression on her face. The vampire could distinguish different emotions passing for Kate's face and eyes: confusion, anger, hesitation, only to stop in a very strong emotion: regret.

"I have been an idiot to Marcus" Kate claimed passing a hand through her hair.

"You haven't been an idiot, Kate" Miriam contradicted, but that didn't convinced the human.

"Totally unfair, then" the brunette said.

"You're human, you have twenty-first century ideals of family and politics" the vampire claimed "Vampires with hundreds of years old, especially heads of the family like Baldwin, are authority and not democratic".

"Is there any head of clan that actually loves his family and isn't a tyrant?" Kate questioned frustrated.

Miriam gave a small smile and answered "Well, I do".

The young Bishop quickly turned her head, facing the vampire, and questioned amazed "You're the head of your family?"

"Yes, I am" Miriam confirmed and then pointed to the yellow door "We arrived".

Kate looked to the door of Marcus' house and then faced the vampire one more time. The human wrapped her arms around the vampire, who hesitantly wrapped her arms around Kate and relaxed in the hug.

"Thank you, Miriam for helping me understand the vampire's dynamic" the brunette thanked next to Miriam's ear.

"And, of course, for representing women in such a manly field" Kate said with a smile when they split up, making Miriam smile too.

The young woman walked to the front door and before she entered, she said "Good night, Miriam".

"Good night, Kate" the vampire said softly, watching the brunette get inside the house.

Miriam walked way when the Bishop closed the door behind her.

The brunette got inside Marcus' house and walked slowly down the hall. The light in the living room reveled where Marcus was and Kate got in, finding him in the couch.

"Hey" she said nervously moving her keys in her hands.

"Hey" Marcus said, quickly getting up.

"Marcus, I'm-" "Kate, I shou-" they started saying at the same time.

"Sorry, you go first" Marcus asked.

"I'm sorry" Kate asked, surprising the vampire as that was last thing he thought she was going to say.

"Miriam talked with me, she explained me vampire clans' hierarchy and how you couldn't lie to Baldwin" the brunette explained.

"Still, I shouldn't have told him" Marcus said

"No. It might turn out to be a good thing, he could turn the other members of the congregation against Knox" Kate disagreed strong, getting closer to the couch.

Marcus nodded and a awaked silence settled between them, he didn't knew what to do now because he wasn't sure that Kate really forgave him and she didn't knew what to do now because she wasn't sure that Marcus accepted her apologies.

"Can we still have a movies' night?" Kate questioned, finally breaking the silence.

"Yes, please" the vampire answered, smiling, with relief.

Marcus and Kate sat next to each other, picking which movies that were going to watch.

By the first movie, the human started a popcorn war that she lost duo to Marcus' vampire reflexes.

By the second movie, the brunette sat closer to Marcus, put a blanket over them and snuggle to the vampire's side.

By the third movie, Marcus looked with love in his eyes to the brunette, who was sleeping in his shoulder and his last conscious thought was: I really need to thank Miriam.

So, what do you think of this chapter?

I thought of giving more time between what happened in this chapter and the rest of episode 4, so Marcus and Kate could have more time to fall in love and I want to develop Kate and Miriam's friendship. When I return to the serie's timeline, i will tell you how much time passed.

I don't know when I'm going to post the next chapter, because I haven't started writting it, but I will try to do it as soon as possible.

Can't wait to read your read your opinions.
