Chapter 12

3ª P.O.V.

"How are you doing?" Marcus questioned to the brunette when they were having breakfast at the kitchen table.

"I'm fine. My sister just needs sometime alone to process her parents' death" Kate answered, with a sad smile. During the night, she had replayed their discussion in her head and decided that some time apart would be a good thing for both of them.

The Bishop saw Marcus' worried and skeptical look, placed her hand on his arm and tried to tranquilize him "Don't worry, Marcus, I'm ok. It's not a big deal".

"We could still do something different" the vampire suggested "Is there something that you use to do when you need a distraction?"

"Me and Diana used to have girls' nights. I could invite one of my girlfriends" Kate smile, excited with her idea, and she quickly got up to get her jacket and go to the lab.

Marcus hesitated, when he mentioned it he was thinking about something that they could do together, but seeing the brunette's smile, the only thing that could said was "But, you can't go alone. You need protection".

The Bishop stopped for a second, before she had what she considers a brilliant idea "I'll take Miriam".

The vampire raised his eyebrows, surprised, and questioned "Miriam!? Are you sure? She is not very sociable".

"I'll talk to her" Kate answered confident, grabbing her jacket and Marcus'.

"Come 'on" she said, already at the door, making Marcus quickly get up and follow her.

"So, did you talk to her?" Miriam questioned to Marcus, leaning on his table.

"With Kate?" he questioned confused and at the vampire's confirmation he asked "About what?"

The women rolled her eyes at the young vampire and clarified "About your almost kiss".

"No, we didn't talk about it" Marcus answered, moving his hand through his hair in a nervous gesture "It wasn't the right time".

Miriam snorted at his explanation and, with a raised eyebrow, she questioned "Are you seriously afraid of talking about it with her?"

"I'm not afraid" he denied "But, she and Diana argued and I didn't want to overload her with that".

"Seriously?" Miriam questioned surprised "What could they possibly fight about? They're like the perfect sisters".

"I know. But yesterday Diana called and told Kate that Matthew found out that her parents weren't killed by humans, they were killed by witches" Marcus told her.

"Witches killing witches" the older vampire couldn't mask her surprise "How did Matthew knew?"

"He analyzed the crime scene" he answered.

"Kate wanted to go to France, she started saying how they could get through that together and Diana said that she wanted to be alone, in a very rude way. That's why I didn't talk with Kate" Marcus explained.

Miriam nod and said "You did well" she started walking away to her table.

"Miriam" the younger vampire called, prepared to tell her about the invitation that Kate would do to her.

"What, Marcus?" Miriam questioned, already impatient.

"Never mind" Marcus change his mind, thinking that it would be much fun to see the older vampire's face when the young Bishop asks her to have a girls' night.

"Hey" Miriam said, sitting next to the young Bishop "How are you doing?"

"Hey, Miriam" Kate smiled to her lab colleague "I'm almost finishing this-".

"I'm not talking about work, Kate" the vampire clarified "Marcus told me about what happened with Diana".

"Oh" the brunette as surprised for a second "Don't worry, I'm fine. In fact I wanna ask you something".

At Miriam's raised eyebrow, Kate questioned with a big smile "Do you want to have a girls' night with me?"

"A what?" the vampire inquired confused.

"A girls' night. You know when friends go out, get drunk, partie" the Bishop answered happy, but when she saw the other woman's face she questioned "Wait. You had a girls' night before, right?"

At Miriam's silence, the Bishop claimed "Oh my god! We're totally having one!" the vampire was about to disagreed when Kate bet her "No excuses. I can't have a girl's night alone and I need the protection of a very powerful vampire".

Miriam rolled her eyes to Kate's arguments, but seeing the human's excited and happy face as enough to make her agree.

Marcus watched the interaction between Kate and Miriam with a smile, one thought passing through his head: Miriam is getting soft.

"I still can't believe that you convinced Miriam" Marcus said, behind the bathroom door, making Kate laugh.

He and Kate had come home from the lab, had dinner and the brunette went to take a shower and dress while Marcus was sitting on her bed, waiting for her.

"So, what are you two going to do?" the vampire questioned curious.

"I thought that we could go to a bar, have a drink and dance" Kate answered from the other side of the door.

"Dance?! There's no way that Miriam is going-" Marcus started saying, but when the brunette opened the door, he was speechless.

Kate wore a black short skirt, a grey sweater, black tights and finally black boots. She raised an eyebrow to Marcus' look and questioned "How do I look?"

"Amazing" the vampire stuttered, making the brunette smile.

"Thanks, Marcus" Kate thanked, putting on a pair of black earrings.

"Ok, I'm ready" she claimed, grabbing her black purse.

"Right on time" Marcus said and at the Bishop's confused look, he clarified "Miriam is close".

They went downstairs, stopping next to the front door.

"Are you sure you don't want me to go?" the vampire questioned worried.

"It's a girls' night, Marcus" Kate said, rolling her eyes, he had been questing that since they arrived from the lab.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine and if anything happens, I'll call you" she guaranteed when she saw Marcus' concerned and puppy eyes.

The vampire sighed and agreed right before the bell rings.

"Hey, Miriam" Kate complimented with a smile.

"Hello, Kate. Marcus" Miriam said looking briefly to Marcus before she looked back at the human "Can we go?"

"Yes. Bye Marcus" the Bishop kissed Marcus' cheek as goodbye and left with Miriam.

"Thank you".

Kate thanked the bartender, grabbed the drinks and returned to her sit next to Miriam.

"So, what are we supposed to do in this girls' night?" the vampire questioned after she took a sip of her wine.

"Well, is basically about friends bonding" Kate explained and after a second of reflection she added with a smile "While they get drunk".

"Vampires don't get drunk" Miriam said serious, but when she saw the brunette's smile fall she added "But, you can. I'll make sure that you don't do anything stupid".

Despite being unsure of what to talk to Miriam about, Kate started by asking what was Miriam's favorite wine and somehow the conversation unfolded. They talked about movies, music, hobbies and, despite trying to avoid it, work, since science was what they had the most in common.

Although their talk didn't went without interruptions. Men stopped near their table and flirted with the two women, only to get a hard look and a cold and sharp answered from Miriam.

Kate watched in silence those interactions, amused with how quickly men fled from them. After the fourth man, she said "Damm, Miriam! I never seen men running so fast".

Miriam gave a predatory smile and answered "It's a gift".

"So, is there any vampire man in your life?" the brunette questioned while she ate a peanut.

The vampire hesitated, but, for a reason she doesn't quite understand, she answered "No. My mate, Bertrand, died a few centuries ago".

"I'm so sorry, Miriam. I didn't knew" Kate said laying a hand on top of Miriam's hands crossed, profoundly regretted having asked.

Miriam was surprised by the Bishop's reaction, the tears on the human's eyes affected a part of her that the vampire didn't knew she had, so she hold Kate's hand and said "It's fine. It's not your fault".

"Come on, one of your favorite songs is playing" the vampire said, pulling Kate up and into the dance floor.

The song Don't worry was playing and after being impressed by Miriam dancing, the brunette forgot everything and just danced.

Despite Miriam never going to admit it to anyone, she add fun with Kate, during all this time she didn't knew that she needed to talk with another woman so badly and deep down Miriam wanted to prolong that night.

But, when she saw Kate dancing on top of a table she decided that it was enough for one night.

She grabbed the brunette's hand and, after helping her getting down the table, the two women got out the bar and Miriam called a cab.

"Whatcha doin'?" Kate questioned, resting her head on Miriam's shoulder, when they got inside the cab.

The vampire looked quickly at the brunette, before she returned her attention to her phone "Texting Marcus".

"Marcus? Where?" Kate quickly raised her head and started looking out the window.

Miriam rolled her eyes to the human's dumb actions, an obvious consequence of her drunk state "Kate, Marcus is in his house, we're going to meet him. Now sit still!" she ordered, Kate pouted, but she sat correctly.

The vampire ignored her, but after five minutes of whining and pouting, Miriam signed and looked at Kate with a raised eyebrow.

"This headrest is uncomfortable" the human complained

"Fine. Come here" Miriam gave in, extending her arm to Kate, who quickly put her head over the vampire's shoulder, tucked up against her collar bone.

The tiredness finally reached the young Bishop and she started to fall asleep when she muttered "Thanks, Miri. You're a good friend".

Miriam looked at the young women who fall asleep in her shoulder, shocked with the explicit friendship status and with the nickname, used so far by only one person centuries ago.

The vampire allowed herself to lose in memories of her human life, remembering, for the first time in a long time, her little sister.

Miriam was pulled from her reflexion by a knocking on the cab's window, she looked outside only to find Marcus, who opened the door. She got out of the cab pulling Kate with her, who was only half awake.

"Marcus!" the human singed happy.

"Kate, are you drunk?" Marcus questioned surprised, that was not what he was expecting when Miriam texted him telling him that they were arriving.

"I'm not drunk, I'm slightly buzzed" Kate disagreed pointing a finger at Marcus, but she lost balance so Marcus rapped on of his arms around the Bishop to stabilize her.

"Ok, you need to lay down" he advised.

"Yeah and I'm gonna go" Miriam said, approaching the cab door.

"Bye bye, Miri" the brunette rapped her arms around Miriam and Marcus raised his eyebrows at the nickname "This was the best girls' night ever!"

Kate tighten her arms around Miriam, who tapped her back and gently removed her arms, rapping them around Marcus instead "Ok. Go to Marcus".

The brunette snuggled in Marcus' arms and they both watched Miriam go away.

When the cab disappeared from their view they made their way to the house. But, after Kate tripped over her own feet for the second time, Marcus put an arm under her knees and lift her at bride style.

The vampire layed the brunette in her bed, pulling the blankets over her, making sure she was warm.

Marcus ran his hand through her brown hair, an adoring look in his eyes as he watched her sleep, he straightened up removing his hand when a small hand hold his wrist.

He found Kate's brown eyes looking back at him and she whispered "Thanks, Marcus. You're a good men".

The vampire was surprised by the sincerity and adoration in Kate's voice "You're welcome. Go back to sleep".

The human rapped her arms around her pillow, snuggling and muttered "You're nothing like Jonathan".

Marcus frowned his eyebrows with the unknown name, but decided that his questions could wait until tomorrow, right now Kate needed to sleep.

He left the room quietly.

In the next morning, Kate woke up with a massive headache and the slight glow coming through the closed window was enough to make her close her eyes again and bury her head in the pillow.

"Good morning!" Marcus sang, opening the door, which made the brunette moan and cover her ears.

"Sorry" the vampire whispered and hand over an aspirin and a cup of coffee.

"Thanks" Kate said before she swallow the aspirin with the coffee.

"What happened?" she questioned confused, last night was mostly a blur.

"Well, you went out with Miriam and got drunk. I don't know what you did before Miriam brought you home, but you here you just slept" Marcus told to the brunette.

"Thank God!" Kate sighed with relief.

"Kate, before you fall asleep, you said something" the vampire started only to be interrupted by a worried Bishop.

"I knew it! I said something bad, didn't I? Of course I did, I'm a mean drunk" Kate rambled.

"You're not mean drunk. In fact, you're a very cute drunk" Marcus said, making Kate smile "You just mentioned someone called Jonathan".

The human's smile fall from her face and she and she looked away to the cup in her hands.

"You don't have to-" the vampire started when he noticed her reaction.

"No, it's fine. I… Jonathan is my ex-boyfriend. Today makes one year since we break up. That's one of the reason why I needed a girls' night so badly" Kate explained to Marcus who nodded in comprehension.

"You don't have to tell me" he said quickly, afraid to pressure her.

"No, I do. It's affecting us" the brunette disagreed, the memories of the two almost kisses with Marcus in her mind.

The vampire widened his eyes, surprised by the topic, but he stayed in silence while he heard Kate's explanation.

"We have been together for three years and we're engaged when one day for your anniversary I left work earlier. I wanted to surprise him" Kate said

"When I got to our apartment, I found him with another woman, a yoga instructor. He had been cheating on me for almost two years" the brunette looked down at her hands, a single tear slipping down her cheek "So, I broke up with him".

Marcus let out a curse under his breath, finally knowing the cause of her hesitation about a new relationship, and moved next to Kate so he could hug her.

"Well, he's an asshole" the vampire said with his head leaning on top of Kate's "Do you want me to kill him?"

The Bishop laughed, wiping her tears and answered "No. Thanks though".

"I'm going to take a shower and change of clothes" Kate said.

"Ok, I'll make your breakfast and then we can have a lazy day" Marcus said, getting up.

"That sounds great" Kate agreed, watching the vampire walking to the door, but before he left she got up and called him "Marcus?"

"Yes?" Marcus stopped in the middle of the room, watching the brunette move her hands nervously.

"Thank you" the Bishop got closer, standing in front of Marcus "For everything".

"It's always a pleasure, darling" he said with his playful smile.

Kate leaned and kissed Marcus on the corner of his lips before she walk away and go to the bathroom.

During breakfast, Kate's moms called her. They were worried with her, since it was her break up anniversary, and the brunette told him about the revelation related with Diana's parents.

Kate and Marcus spent the rest of the saturday sitting on the coach, cuddle, watching movies. In one of them, Marcus pointed out how unrealistic the American uniforms were, which resulted in him showing, to the brunette, the photos he saved from all the years he lived.

So, we finally found out why Kate is hesitating about Marcus, but don't worry that will end very, very soon ;)
