Episode 6: The Darers Go First Raid pt.1

The GIs silently looked at each other, then back toward Lucia.

"Paderborn?" Buck asked incredulously, "Are you serious?"

"Deadly." Lucia responded, "The only device cabable of letting us communicate without siren interference is located in Paderborn."

"We voulenteered for this not knowing where we were going. We knew it was most likely going to be dangerous; yet we still voulenteed." Private Schnider said to Buck before turning to face Lucia, "Lucia, what's the plan?"

"We will take this jeep and approach from the south of the city. Once we reach the outermost limits of the city, we will puff of into the closet corpse of trees. From there, we will continue on foot untill we reach the outermost inner section of the city. This when I expect we will encounter the first set of hostiles." Lucia explained.

"Who will the hostiles be?" Byron asked, his playful attitude replaced by a more serious one.

"Former SS men. They have been given the job of gaurding the outer city." Lucia answered before continuing, "Once past them, we will mostly be avoiding the explorer class sirens. Now, the device is underneath the Cathedral in the center of the city. This will be the most difficult part of the operation."

"You should probably stop before we change our minds." Buck spoke up, earning him a glare from Commander Berlin and Lucia.

"You're probably right." Lucia responded, slightly annoyed. "Now, do you happen to have any spare weapons? I have my C96 and bayonet, but I would prefer to only use them if nesicary."

"There should be a Thomson on the passenger-side door of the jeep, along with two spare thirty round magazines." Commander Berlin told Lucia, "Be warned, that thing eats through ammunition pretty fast, so be careful. We don't have regular supply caravans anymore."

Lucia nodded to Commander Berlin before turning her attention back to the two GIs. "Alright you three, let's go."

Buck climbed into the driver's seat, while Private Schnider and Byron climbed into the back.

"Are you ready for this?" Lucia asked.

"Yes." All three GIs replied.

"Good. I'd be worried if you weren't. Let's get going."

With that, Buck pushed the accelerator on the ground, and they were off.

"Where is she?"

A tall siren stood over the Ironblood women lying bruised and beaten on the ground.

"I will never tell you."

"Your mistake you outdated battlecruiser."

The siren raised her leg backwards and delivered a hard kick straight into the Ironblood women's gut. The woman groaned in pain, and a trickle of blood issued from her mouth. The siren raised her leg again and delivered another hard kick to the woman. This time, the women coughed, sending splatters of blood across the floor. The siren looked down in disgust before winding up for another kick when a man in a SS uniform walked into the room.

"Lady Observer."

Observer Alpha turned from the woman lying on the ground, who continued to cough up blood.

"What is it?" Observer Alpha asked the man.

"Lady Observer, I would like to inform you that one of my men has reported seeing what appears to be an Eagle Union jeep moving away from the city of Langen. Based on the earlier attack on outpost 'Bruno', they may be headed to Paderborn." The SS man replied.

"Are you sure. Outpost 'Bruno' as you refer to it, was also used as an outpost to coordinate movements of slave laborers to the wisdom ore mines."

"I am very sure. The transmission from the radio shack before the attack was regarding the new radio device. Now we have reports of a jeep moving toward Paderborn. This may just be a coincidence, but I wouldn't be so sure. It would be a wise precaution too…"

The man never finished his thought. Observer Apha's hand shot out and grabbed the man by his throat.

"You may have been in control once, but that was long ago. Do not give me advice on how to run my section of this world." Observer Alpha told the man before she dropped him to the ground, the man gasping for breath.

"M, m, my apologies Lady Observer." The man gasped out.

"Your apology has been noted. Nevertheless, your idea was a good one. I will alert the garrison in Paderborn. I hope for your sake that you are correct."

Lucia's eyes watered as the jeep sped along. For the last half-hour, they had been sticking to the back roads, as not to attract undue attention. As they drove, Lucia's mind began to wander.

"I wonder what Carina is up to. She should be in the Netherlands on a lead about some possible new ally." Lucia thought.

"Lucia, we're approaching Frankfurt." Buck said, jolting Lucia out of her thoughts, "Is there any way we can go around?"

"There is, but it's in the direction of a massive siren outpost. Best we can do is maneuver around the outskirts…" Lucia was stopped mid-sentence as a fusillade of fire came from their left.

"Cultists!" Lucia cried out as the bullets whizzed over her head.

The GIs leapt from the jeep, with Lucia in tow. Firing the Thompson in short bursts, Lucia realized that the incoming fire was not directed at them specifically, but was meant to keep them immobilized.

"They aren't trying to kill us!" Private Schnider called out. He had clearly come to the same conclusion.

"Then let's get going."

The group scurried back into the jeep, although with enough sense to keep their heads down. Buck slammed his foot down on the accelerator, and the jeep lurched forward, As the jeep sped off, Lucia caught a glimpse of the people shooting at them.

"They were SS." Lucia said in a panicked voice.

"Why didn't they kill us?" Byron asked, his puzzlement obvious.

"I don't know. But I do know that it means someone wants us alive." Lucia told him.

"Or you." Private Schnider said to Lucia, "They probably don't care about us. You have been the one being a pain in the ass to them."

Lucia thought about this. He was right. She had been harassing them for the better part of the last few months with her friend Carina. However, it wasn't until recently they began to become more serious about it.

"Hopefully Carina has something when she gets back." Lucia thought to herself as the outline of Frankfurt became more prominent on the horizon.
