Disclaimers: I do not own Warframe.
A/N: So this was submitted to me by Geolex (id: 5683514) awhile ago and I just now got around to releasing it. While there was some editing done on my part as well as more added to it, all the credit goes to them for laying the foundation for it.
Vauban
The Trapper Tenno. The Engineer Tenno. The Builder Tenno.
Unofficially: The Drill Instructor Tenno
This is Vauban, focused, and methodical.
Also known as the Self Proclaimed #1 Nightwave Fan.
Born and raised in the nearly-forgotten colony of Ariel of Uranus (which was a floating landmass during the Orokin Empire before the Grineer sank it to help build their sealabs), Vauban was the firstborn child to a married couple of engineers who kept the colony running despite the lack of provision it had.
Along with his younger sister, Vauban was extremely gifted in mechanics and engineering, the only difference being that while he wanted to explore the stars she wanted to stay behind and help their home prosper. Soon, Vauban got the opportunity to leave when a military recruiting vessel came through his colony and he enlisted into the Orokin Army as a combat engineer after passing their qualification test.
During his tour of duty, he would become one of the only few Tenno to face the Infested in combat before the Zariman Ten Zero incident when his entire unit along with several others was involved in cleansing the last Infested stronghold Pre-Old War on the planet of Eris. While the offensive would exact a heavy toll on the Orokin forces, Vauban would serve with distinction and prove his worth through countless acts of valor with his tech skills and improvised weaponry being put to the test multiple times to turn the tide of battle. The campaign would last four years and in the closing months of it, it would be his squad, more specifically Vauban himself, who would discover the young child who would become known as the Tenno, Nidus, among the ruins of a former spaceport. At the time, no one knew how the boy had survived this long seeing how the last remaining civilians were transport off the planet two years prior.
Due to his combat distinction shown during the campaign, Vauban was promoted several times until he reached the rank of Sergeant Major and became a drill instructor for a time after the last Infested nest was cleared. It was during this time that the Orokin Military introduced a new mentorship program where members of lesser nobles families could receiving training alongside an experienced military professional in the fields of their choices to better prepare themselves for officer positions. It was during this that Vauban met the future Tenno, Protea, as she was assigned to him.
Vauban would later admit that while Protea was definitely the smarter one between the two of them by a large margin, it was her lack of maturity and inability to take criticism that held her back, but that is a story for another day.
He was ordered to board the Zariman Ten Zero for the Emperor's Grand Parade alongside Protea to aided in repairing broken equipment and maintaining the engines. Unlike the majority of the Tenno, the two of them had a faint feeling that the ship was more than it seemed to be due to the unusual nature of the engines and how they were restricted from entering certain sections of the engine room.
When the ship stopped at his home colony, Vauban requested if he could bring his sister on board to assist them in keeping up with maintenance, a request that was approved by his superiors.
For reasons still unknown to Vauban himself though, she declined his offer and even told him to not get back on the ship, though she didn't tell him why. Vauban's last conversation with his sister was him telling her that they were going to have a talk about this paranoia of hers when he came back home on shore leave after the Grand Parade.
Years later when the ship was found, he was discovered by the engine room's doorway with several spherical devices on the ground around him that were long since broken. None of these items were registered to have been on the ship at the time of departure, nor were they recognized by any of the rescue team.
These were in his own words, Prototype Teslas.
While many families were executed to keep knowledge of the incident under wraps, including his mother and father, what I've heard from Vauban is that his sister seemed to have disappeared the same day the Zariman Ten Zero departed Uranus. Orokin records show no indication of what happened to her, though Vauban hopes that she managed to get somewhere safe and live out a peaceful life in this hellish system.
As the forces of the Grineer, Corpus, and Infested grow and change, Vauban will calculate, assess, and adapt to their numbers with ways to tear them down faster than they can rebuild. He doesn't work harder, he works smarter.
Vauban is well known for his ability to form devices out of seemingly thin air with whatever he has on hand as well as quickly adapt to any new technology. Because of this, he serves as the Orbiter primary engineer with Protea serving as the secondary though recent disputes between them as led me to assign Protea to assist Maroo on keeping the derelict Mars Relay afloat alongside the exiles of the Preservers guild.
Serving in the Orokin Military had given him extensive training in warfare as well as leadership qualities. If Excalibur is to be considered the commanding officer of the Tenno in the field, then Vauban is his senior enlisted advisor, providing support and crucial words of wisdom to the much younger Sword Tenno. Any squad with Vauban in it is almost guaranteed to complete any mission with low injuries due to the Builder Tenno experience in squad combat, especially when combating the Infested.
During the botched Mercury mission against Vor, it was he who led the rearguard alongside Ivara, Ash, and Khora, in order to give the rest of the Tenno and Steel Meridian time to evacuate.
As mention before, Vauban is an expert at fighting the Infested due to his experiences in the Pre-Old War Eris campaign. Due to this, he is usually tasked with leading a squad to either defend a colony under attack by them or clearing a derelict full of them before it gets too close to a planet. Surprisingly, he is one of the few Tenno who has a positive relationship with Nidus, possibly due to having known him before the incident and has no qualms with the Infested Tenno coming with him on such assignments, even if it's just the two of them.
Vauban prefers the weapons of his military service days, including the Karak assault rifle which is now the standard rifle for the Grineer, as well as the standard Strun. Though recently he has taken a liking to the dual machine pistols Akstiletto.
If I were to take into account all of the confirms kills Vauban achieved against the Infested on Eris during the Orokin campaign, he would hold the top spot in the overall kill tally among the Tenno. Unfortunately, since this was during his Pre-Tenno days and before he was even put into cyro sleep, they have to be exempt from his total kills. Therefore, Vauban has the sixth most kills among the Tenno, just right under Valkyr.
Vauban has personally modified his Landing Craft to include a laser artillery strike system though this does considerably drain the ship's power source, so much that using it more than three times in a mission limits his ability to be extracted properly.
Vauban's gruff attitude rubs a good number of Tenno and our allies the wrong way, especially those of a nobility background such as Inaros, Nezha, and especially Protea.
He is currently the record holder of the highest score in Wyrmius, surpassing Nyx, Mag, and Volt, much to their dismay.
While not a music maker himself, he does enjoy listening to it while he works and the same thing can be said with podcasts. One such thing he loves listening to is the pirate radio station: Nightwave. He even goes as far as sending the host, Nora Night, a message to let her know that he enjoys listening to news and stories from her.
Unsurprisingly due to his military background, Vauban has a great amount of muscle that goes along with his great intellect. While not as impressive as Atlas, Hildryn, or Rhino, he is still one of the physically stronger Tenno and is not to be taken lightly in hand-to-hand.
Vauban is confident, strong, and resourceful, but even he has admitted that he knows better than to bite off more than he can chew. One of the few memories he has pertains to watching a full platoon of Imperial Marines trying to take on Chroma and Hildryn onboard the Zariman Ten Zero before the incident. He recalls it happening in one of the storage bays after one of their officers thought they needed to let off some steam after being coop up in the ship for weeks on end and decided that the two backwater savages would be the perfect way to do so. Both the Dragon and Shield Tenno's legs were chained to the floor and while the marines were equipped with Bo staffs, Chroma and Hildryn only had their bare hands.
What happened next could only be described by Vauban as the main reason he will never try and pick a fight with either of them if he can avoid it as the two of them not only manages to beat down the entire unit including their commanding officer but even started fighting each other afterward. It took shipboard security being called to come and tranquilize them. Even then it took five minutes for them to succumb to the effects and the whole time they were still fighting one another, their hands wrap around each other throats as they slip into unconsciousness.
*Vauban also admits that he spotted Nezha off to the side watching the whole thing and that the boy appeared to be memorized by Hildryn as his eyes were on her the entire time. Nezha has told me that he hates the fact that he doesn't recall this moment.*
Vauban is well aware that he is near the top of the Stalker's hit list but this does not deter him from going on assignments alone. He has informed me that he has been cooking up something "special" for the shadowy assassin and that next time he would be ready for him.
Vauban also seems to get along with Atlas quite well too, even if he does find the nicknames annoying.
Vauban willingly sacrificed his own safety in the name of mayhem. He is to be used wisely.
A/N: I plan on doing Nidus here soon. Remember, the credit goes to Geolex (id: 5683514)
