Sitting there on her bed, with his arm touching hers and the heat of his kind, sparkling eyes on her, the urge won her over and she pulled his head closer to hers. He tried to pull away at first but she tightened her hold on the back of his neck and he gave in, allowing her to connect her lips with his like she'd wanted to do ever since she first picked him up for their date earlier.
He wrapped his arms around her just like she did him, not coaxing her any closer but still shooting an electric jolt through her whole body. Imelda closed her eyes and momentarily forgot everything except for the sound of their breathing and the heat of his arms around her waist.
When he reached up and ran a hand through her hair, tugging one strand loose, she felt herslef blush as she opened her eyes and smiled against his mouth. He grinned, too, his eyes widening, as he brought his arms away from her back and cupped her face with both of his now free hands.
Imelda thought of all the other times they'd kissed before this, during and after their past dates and behind each other's houses. But those times were nothing like this one, nothing at all. For those were short and quick, little pecks on each other's lips and cheeks. And those times were always spoiled by things like Ernesto yanking Héctor away from her or her amigas or parents telling her they needed her for something.
But now, none of that was going to happen. Ernesto wasn't here, her parents were hanging out together in a different area of the house, and Imelda and Héctor had the whole room to themselves. No one would be distracting her this time.
Or at least, that's what she thought until she heard familiar giggling in her doorway, which she'd closed earlier. She should've locked it when she'd first led Héctor inside.
When Imelda broke the connection of her and Héctor's kiss, she whipped around to find the worst: her brothers standing in the doorway, elbowing each other and pointing at them with unmistakeable teasing in their eyes. Oscar was staring directly at her as he snickered, and Felipe had and an arm around him with barely contained laughter.
Héctor's eyes drained of their excitement and Imelda watched as a healthy blush filled his cheeks and the right side of his neck. He veered away from her and rubbed the back of his neck as his head swiveled toward the wall on the left side.
Her brothers seemed to find this hilarious, and both of them doubled over in hysterics, Oscar having to lean on the doorframe because he was laughing so hard. There were tears in both their eyes in a matter of seconds.
Imelda squeezed Héctor's hand tightly before standing and pointing sharply at her brothers with her other hand. "Go away," she snapped, ignoring how the color in Héctor's cheeks and neck deepened when she spoke.
"Imelda kissed Héctor," Felipe choked out between breaths.
Imelda heard Héctor make a strange noise next to her, which showed that he was either disgusted or embarassed or both. He was still turned away from her, focusing too hard on the picture of Imelda at her quinceañera celebration that hung on the wall next to him.
Imelda charged forward and grabbed each of her brothers by their shirt collars and practically throws them out of her room. "Stay away," she threatened through clenched teeth as she let them go. "I won't tell you again."
She slammed the door on their confused faces and huffed, rolling her eyes as she went over to Héctor and sat next to him once more.
Staring at Héctor again, she noticed he had a weird grin on his face now, and he was staring at her too intensely with a look in his eyes she hadn't seen before. Without warning he started laughing, too, wrapping his arms around himself as he giggled madly, his cheeks flushing again from excitement instead of laughter.
Imelda gave him a strange look, her eyebrows raised as she watched his laughing fit, but soon she found herself fighting her own giggles despite her lingering irritation from earlier.
When Héctor finally calmed down and made civil eye contact with her, Imelda pulled him to her again for another kiss, letting his warmth and the aftermath of his strange joy fill her with her own sort of happiness.
