I do not own the Fallout series
AN: Today we look over all the Cronenberg-esque nightmares given to us by Interplay and lovingly brought to HD formatted FPS life by Bethesda and Obsidian. Good luck sleeping after your first Centaur encounter.
Other FEV Creatures
Super Mutants are only one type of many creations born from FEV. Other nightmares such as Floaters and Mutant Hounds have also appeared and can be traced back to West-Tec's Magnum Opus.
Centaurs
Out of all the horrors born from the Forced Evolutionary Virus, none is more visceral and sickening than the Centaur. They were created by dumping humans, dogs, cats, and anything and everything else around into vats of FEV. Their bodies are tumorous, deformed and visceral. Skinless, their muscles and bones and ligaments are exposed to open air. Centaurs are legless, instead they drag their boneless lower bodies around with six arms, complete with hands, sticking out of their lower torso. Centaurs often act as watchdogs for Mutant Camps and are sometimes treated as pets.
On the West Coast, Centaurs were created by The Master during their early experiments with FEV. Vault 87 Centaurs were created by the formerly human residents, for no reason other than deranged curiosity. The Vault 87 Centaurs are extinct as of 2287, however some West Coast Centaurs still remain, accompanying rogue mutants and guarding their raiding camps.
There are two (arguably three) types of Centaur. One is two headed, with one being the head of a human and the other a dog's head, both without a scrap of skin. The other type of centaur only has one, human-esque head, but they lack eyes and mouths, instead have 3 prehensile tongues pouring out of their skulls. The reason there are arguably 3 types of centaurs is that some of the latter centaurs appear far larger and muscular and act as pack alphas. Whether they are simply older and stronger versions of these centaurs or a different type entirely is unknown.
Floaters
The Floater is an odd, almost comical creature. Their appearance is worm-like; with small rail-thin tendrils protruding from their torsos and bloated gas-filled sacks on the top of their heads. This 'float-sack' allows them to hover above the ground. They like to burrow themselves under the ground, waiting to ambush potential prey. When startled, they emit a warbling cry as they attempt to strike their prey. Certain types of Floaters have stronger offensive abilities, such as being able to spew flaming gas, icy breath, or acidic spit.
On the West Coast, Floaters were originally created by West-Tec by testing FEV on flatworms. These tests were continued by The Master and Floaters could be found guarding The Cathedral and Proto-Vault alongside Centaurs. In Appalachia, Flatworms were exposed to the FEV dumped into the Huntersville water reservoir and were quickly adopted by the resident Mutants, but wild packs could still be found, typically in groups of 3-4.
Mutant Hounds
Dogs are man's best friend, even 8ft tall green men. The Mutant Hound is found in Super Mutant camps and strongholds throughout Appalachia and The Massachusetts Commonwealth. Acting as guard dogs, these massive curs hunt alongside their masters with a ferocious vigor. Similar to their owners, any distinguishing features they had faded as they were exposed to FEV. They have the vague outline of a dog, but with larger, heavily muscled upper bodies, stubby tails, massive tooth-filled jaws and forest green skin.
In Appalachia, the FEV strain in Huntersville had a curious effect of attracting dogs with its smell. These dogs either drank the infected water or were exposed to the FEV some other way. In the Commonwealth (and, by proxy, The Island), The Institute exposed dogs, as well as humans, to FEV and teleported their failures to the surface.
Behemoths
Technically an elderly form of Super Mutant, the Behemoth holds little in common with their smaller and younger 'brothers'. In essence, they are the concept of the Super Mutant taken to the nth degree: a massive green humanoid with a relentless desire for destruction. 20ft tall, they often carry uprooted sewer piping, or other make-shift melee weaponry and wear crude armor made from shopping carts and car parts. Any cognitive ability they once had has nearly been wiped away by the unstable FEV. Curiously, Behemoths have only ever appeared on the East Coast, never in New California. My best guess is that the Mariposa strain of FEV was the most stable.
There are two types of Behemoths. The Vault 87 Behemoths were far more muscular than their Appalachian and Commonwealth counter-parts; with massive, neckless heads, yellow skin, lipless faces and huge upper bodies. Most were wiped out by The Brotherhood of Steel following the Battle of Adams Air Force Base. Behemoths in the Commonwealth and Appalachia are smaller and leaner, with smaller heads and torsos. Their more disproportioned than their DC-based cousins however, as their shoulders slope to one side and one arm is smaller than the other. Nevertheless, they are still serious threats.
Psykers
Not all FEV creations are inhuman. Psykers are humans who have been exposed to FEV, but instead of becoming Super Mutants, they developed telepathic abilities. They are physically indistinguishable from regular humans, but due to the trauma of FEV exposure they are commonly mentally unbalanced. Their abilities also cause them severe head pain and are hard to control, so a type of protective helmet was developed to keep them uninjured. Psykers have only ever appeared in New California.
Wannamingos
Wannamingos were weird, even by FEV standards. Often mistaken for aliens, the Wannamingo was a bipedal creature; eyeless, armed with a large mouth filled with teeth and tentacles for arms. They held no resemblance to any other terrestrial creature, so what ever they descended from is a mystery. Wannamingos could only reproduce from a queen and the only one was killed in 2242. This, combined with a short lifespan, means that Wannamingos are now extinct.
Snallygaster
A reptilian mutant found in Appalachia. (See "Other Abominations" page for more details).
Grafton Monster
A massive, albino mutant found in Appalachia. (See "Other Abominations" page for more details).
Proto-Mutants
Mariposa was still active even before The Master took control. Prospecting Scavengers were exposed to the FEV still present in the Military Base and became the first Super Mutants seen in New California. Not being associated with the Gen1 Mariposa Mutants, these 'Proto-Mutants' were still a serious threat. However, they eventually died out after The Master took control and began refining the FEV mutation process.
Harold
The only mutant of his kind. Harold was nearly indistinguishable from a regular ghoul. He was exposed to FEV on an expedition to destroy the source of the Proto-Mutants from Mariposa. Despite, succeeding in destroying the Proto-Mutants, the base's automated security killed the Expedition team and exposed Harold and the man who would become The Master to FEV.
Harold, instead of becoming a Super Mutant, became nearly identical to the average Ghoul. Eventually however, a tree sapling began growing out of his head, which he called Bob/Herbert. Unfortunately for Harold, Herbet/Bob never stopped growing and eventually the tree overwhelmed Harold and he became rooted to the ground in the northern Capital Wasteland. From Bob, an oasis sprung, with plants that were immune to irradiated water. Oasis, as it was dubbed, was tended to by a tribe who called themselves "Tree Minders", who worshipped Harold as a god, much to his annoyance.
In the decade following the Battle of Adams Air Force Base, Oasis began growing larger and larger, with now the entire northern Capital Wasteland a healthy forest and it still grows even now, restoring the environment to its Pre-War beauty.
The Master
'The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.' A poignant and ever timeless phrase, one that perfectly described The Master and their story.
The story begins with Mariposa. In the years following the Great War, the abandoned military installation became a source of interest to prospecting scavengers. These hapless Wastelanders became the first of the Mariposa Super Mutants. Eventually, these Proto-Mutants became such a threat that an expedition was led by a man named Richard Gray to find the source of the Mutants and destroy it. The expedition ended in tragedy. While the mutants were the destroyed, the expedition was wiped out by the base's automated security and there were only two survivors: Harold and Gray.
Gray was knocked into a vat of FEV and was sealed in for an entire month. When he crawled out the vat, he wasn't human, he wasn't even a super mutant. It was just a blob of organs, flesh, and muscles. It fed on rats and other vermin, absorbing not only their bodies, but their minds. These vermin became the first of what The Master would call 'The Unity'.
Eventually, prospecting scavengers rediscovered Mariposa and The Master. The Master used the base's automated security to capture them. The lucky ones were dipped in FEV and became the First Generation of Mariposa Super Mutants. But the rest? The ones of strong mind and will? They were absorbed into The Unity. Eventually, The Master was moved to the Angels' Boneyard, into a Prototype vault underneath The Cathedral. There, they continued expanding the Unity, creating an army of Super Mutants and a cult of human followers, known as The Children of The Cathedral.
Thankfully, The Master and their Cathedral headquarters were destroyed by The Vault Dweller of Vault 13 and the Mutant Army was scattered. The Master's goal was to create peace by turning humans into Super Mutants who they believed were best suited to repopulate the Wasteland, governing this new civilization with their omnipotent collective of consciousness. I shuddered to imagine what would have happened if not for The Vault Dweller's intervention.
Other FEV Creatures Trivia
Moles Rats and Deathclaws were also created by FEV, but are deserving of their own respective pages.
Psykers, Deathclaws, and Mole Rats are the only FEV born creatures capable of reproduction.
Psykers' telepathic abilities are genetic and are passed down to their offspring.
If Harold ever found out what became of his friend, he never spoke a word.
FEV was also used to create a species of Fire Ants in the Capital Wasteland (see 'Insects' page for more details)
Centaurs are also capable of flinging irradiated bile with their tongues.
