I do not own the Fallout series.
AN: A light chapter today. As light as a feather…yeah.
Birds
Several species of Birds have survived the past 200 years since the Great War. Unlike other animals, they're relatively unscathed by mutation and continue to act as they did before the bombs. While various species of Birds exist, they all share several common features. 1. They're covered in feathers and have beaks and hollow bones, 2. They're bi-pedal, with their forelimbs having evolved into wings and 3. They don't give live births, instead laying eggs.
Rad-Chickens
Rad-Chickens are the descendants of the common Pre-War domestic Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), which in turn was a subspecies of the Red Junglefowl. Chickens are part of an order of Birds known as fowl. Fowl were species of Birds that were a member of the order Galliformes kept for their meat and eggs, or Birds used as quarry for game hunters.
In Post-War America, Rad-Chickens continue to act as livestock for settlements. They've stopped growing feathers over their bodies and now only grown them in stringy patches. Their wings have atrophied and their bodies are covered in glowing lesions. Despite this, they are still edible.
Rad-Chickens are timid creatures and will flee from conflict. They possess no means of defense and are dependent on their owners for protection from predators, mostly species of Canids like Foxes and Coyotes.
Vultures
The term 'Vulture' is the catch-all name for several species of carnivorous Birds that prefer feeding on carrion rather than hunting live prey. The most common of these natural scavengers are Black Vultures (Coragyps Atratus). Black Vultures are fairly large Birds, covered in a thick black plumage and are relatively unscathed by radiation.
Vultures live in flocks of three of five, sometimes larger. These flocks travel through their air and circle around potential feeding sources such as carrion or animals close to death. They are known to stalk predators such as Deathclaws and Yao Guai and feed on any carrion left behind.
Rad-Gulls
Found around the coasts of the Wasteland, these Birds are the descendants of the average Sea Gull, a member of any species in the family Laridae. In the 210+ years since the Great War, the Rad-Gulls have lost most of their feathers, but are still capable of flight. Rad-gulls feed on small insects, fish, Mirelurk Hatchlings and the remains of Dolphins.
Ravens
One of the few species of animals unmutated by the radiation, Ravens are found throughout Post-War America. Small birds covered in black feathers and are highly intelligent.
Crows
Another species of unmutated Birds, Crows are relatives of Ravens, but are smaller and less intelligent.
West Virginian Roc
An Abomination that was recorded in the early 2100's. (See 'Other Abominations' page for more details).
Watchers
A Synth Crow used developed by The Institute. (See 'Synths' page for more details).
Birds Trivia
Rad-Chickens can survive up to 10 minutes after being decapitated
Ravens and Crows are believed to be omens of death and misfortune by some.
Fishing Communities consider it bad luck to kill a sea bird.
AN: Birds! Just a whole bunch of birds. Recently I got a review asking me to add creatures from Fallout Tactics. When I started this fic, I debated whether or not to add creatures from the more esoteric games like Tactics or from concept art and Van Buren, before deciding not to for convenience. Now though, I think I will at least add Tactics creatures only. -Bones
