omg guys... i can't believe I'm back here again. i haven't touched this for 3 years and in fact, I wrote the start of this chapter when I was still in my obsessed-with-skz phase in 2019. geez, I've been so out of it- skz and kpop in general. I've still kept up with skz here and there, but recently I've been falling down the rabbit-hole again and honestly, I'm so happy I am. With relationship, academics, training and so many other life problems, skz is like my safe space. I've sworn off of men for now and am just going back to my 2019 training-study-kpop focused phase. was kinda trying not to write this, because I didn't want to get sucked back in, but was reading ffs and wanting to know the ending to mine, so hope I can give y'all a few chapters before I disappear for another few years :)
"I wonder what this is about?" Chan led his members down the stairs.
"We're probably finding out our debut schedule." Minho said from somewhere at the back.
"Right." Chan felt reassured.
Jisung poked Chan in the back. "It might be about that survival show," he hissed.
Chan shuddered then frowned as he registered Jisung's words. He jerked his head around. "Wait, what?"
Jisung snickered. "You really think we didn't hear you?"
Chan was about to respond but Woojin called out in a low voice. "Mind your manners! Chan, go on in."
Taking a deep breath, Chan pushed open the door and went in.
Park Jinyoung was sitting at the head of the table, his hands folded in front of him. There were a lot of cameras around, Chan noted. He tried to remain calm and look natural as the rest of the members filed in,
The CEO nodded pleasantly at them, looking relaxed and friendly. "Wow, so many! This isn't your first time with cameras, right?"
The members nodded, a little awkwardly. They all had never had any direct contact with him besides Chan.
"Anyhow," Park Jinyoung said more briskly, getting to business now. "Our agency's expectations for the next group are very high. We will be recording your debut process."
Chan saw his shock reflected in all his member's faces and he struggled to keep his expression under control. Come on, Chan, he mentally chided himself. You're going to be an idol; you need to remember not to let your feelings show!
"Above all," Park Jinyoung continued. "I thought a lot about how I should confirm it. Rather than testing your dancing and singing, I wanted to evaluate your team as a whole, because this team wasn't made by the company. Chan was the one who made this." he nodded at Chan and Chan squirmed uncomfortably. He wanted to tell the CEO the truth but Woojin, catching his eye, blinked meaningfully.
"With the team, I want to see and confirm your form." The members all nodded, understanding.
Park Jinyoung looked around at all of them shrewdly, appraising them. "The first mission you will be given at JYP is…"
Chan could see the members tense involuntarily and he himself clenched his fists in dreaded anticipation.
"Make your own song and create a cool stage."
Chan breathed a sigh of relief. That wasn't so bad; he'd done it many times before with his 3racha bandmates. He could see both Jisung and Changbin relaxing slightly, but the rest of the members still looked uneasy.
"As our company's expecting a lot, there will be some flaws among you." he paused, "So there is also a possibility that some of you might not debut."
Barely controlling himself from gasping in shock, Chan was glad that the other members had managed to hold it in as well. Changbin's eyes were narrowed and he seemed barely restrained.
"Might not debut together?" he heard a faint voice behind him, and he quickly turned to reassure whoever it was.
"Don't worry," he said reassuringly to Jeongin, who looked petrified, "I'm sure we will, okay? We made this team and we're gonna see it through all the way."
"That's right," Minho said from Jeongin's left, giving the kid a friendly squeeze, "No one's going home. Now, move on kid, you're holding up the line."
Looking slightly more confident, Jeongin passed on. Minho caught Chan's eye and the two exchanged a meaningful look before he went on his way. Chan bit his lip. Despite his reassurances… he was worried. Yes, he was worried.
"Don't you think this key would work better?" Chan asked Changbin.
"Making it in a female key?" Changbin sucked in his teeth. "That's a bit risky, don't you think, hyung? We're hard-pressed to hit those notes."
"Jisung can do it." Chan swiveled around to face the youngest member of 3racha, who was scowling at a tablet in his lap. "Right, Ji?"
"Huh? Yeah." Jisung scratched the back of his neck. Chan frowned as something occurred to him. He had been so absorbed in his work that he hadn't noticed until now, but Jisung usually was much more vocal during their producing sessions. He was just about to comment on it when Changbin tapped one of the handwritten sheets.
"So who's doing this part, hyung?"
"Jisung, you wrote this, didn't you?" he attempted to draw Jisung into the conversation, "Did you have anyone in mind?"
"Yeah, I guess," he said in such a low voice Chan could barely hear him.
"Speak up, Ji," Changbin leaned forward impatiently, "Go on, who? Hyunjin?"
"I was thinking," Jisung hesitated, then mumbled without looking up. "Him."
"Who?" Chan was genuinely confused and he could tell Changbin was too.
"Him." Jisung repeated.
"Yeah, Jisung, that's not really helping."
"Deep voice, freckles."
"Like saying his name is harder than describing him," A snide remark from Changbin.
"Really?" Chan's voice was a bit louder than he'd anticipated. Chan stepped on his foot before Changbin said anything else and turned around fully, trying to keep his face neutral. "Umm, could you tell us why?"
Jisung chewed his cheeks, his head dipping lower over the tablet. "Just- he's not good at Korean, obviously, so it's easy and his voice sticks out so…"
Chan was tempted to make him rephrase that but he felt that was as far as Jisung would go to compliment Felix's cavernous voice. "Mind showing us?"
Looking somewhat relieved that Chan hadn't prodded further, although Changbin was wiggling his eyebrows around like crazy, Jisung carefully rapped the verse. It was much slower than his usual style and there weren't any of the inflections or change in tone that he liked to do. It was actually very well thought out for Felix; showcasing his unique vocal tone while not pushing him too far out of his comfort zone.
"That's good, Ji," Chan beamed at him with way more pride than would be expected for a simple part allocation, but he was trying to convey how proud he was that Jisung didn't let a petty squabble with Felix interfere with their debut song.
Self- conscious, Jisung defended, "Yeah, well, I don't want anyone to be eliminated. I guess that goes for that prick too, otherwise all our efforts would be wasted."
"Real heartwarming, Ji," Changbin said sarcastically, clapping him on the shoulder. "You should help him learn it, too."
"Don't push it," Jisung warned, then squealed as Changbin started tickling him. Chan shook his head and turned back to his work with a slight smile, ignoring the noisy children rolling around his recording studio.
"Hey, Sung, you're early," Hyunjin said cheerfully. "Minho-hyung just went to the toilet- we were working on the choreo."
"Cool," Jisung dropped his bag on the floor and started doing warm up stretches. "I can't believe this is our first song we're doing together."
"Crazy, huh?" Hyunjin plopped down beside him, "And just think, we wouldn't be doing this if not for you and Felix, huh?" he nudged Jisung good-naturedly.
"Just for him," Jisung said stubbornly, "I was doing fine."
Hyunjin pretended to dramatically clutch at his heart and rolled around on the floor. "Ah, you wound me with your harsh words!" When Jisung just snorted, he crawled back to him and placed a hand on his knee to get his attention. "Seriously though, just because you were with your 3racha doesn't mean you were safe. It's much better like this anyway, isn't it? You get to see us all the time!"
That got a smile out of Jisung but just as he was opening his mouth to reply, the door opened and a shadow crossed Jisung's face… a black look that mirrored that of the person at the door.
"Hey, Felix!" Hyunjin greeted him with more enthusiasm than normal, very aware of the thickening tension in the room.
"Hi, Hyunjin." Felix walked in and sat opposite them, his eyes never leaving Jisung
Hyunjin looked between the two but they kept on glaring at each other. "No 'Hi, Lix?' 'Hey, Ji?' Right, right, guess not."
"Hey, Ji," Felix said with venomous politeness.
"Hi, Lix," Jisung smiled back, his eyes belaying the murderous intent within.
Just then, the door creaked open and Minho walked in, holding a water bottle. He stopped when he saw the occupants, although Hyunjin practically flew to him in relief, "Hyung, hi!" He mouthed, help me!
"Hey, guys, what's up?" Minho asked cautiously.
"Nothing," Felix and Jisung said at the same time, both locked in some intense stare down.
Hyunjin and Minho stood by the doorway, watching them curiously. Finally, Jisung snapped, "You blinked."
"You blinked first." Felix snarled back.
"Did not! It was you!"
"Like you can see from that distance, you blind squirrel!"
Jisung raised his eyebrows in disbelief, "Did you actually learn that just to insult me in Korean? Still obsessed with me, huh?"
"Not as obsessed as you about being right!" Felix was stumbling over his words in anger, his eyes snapping.
"I'm glad you noticed that, because that's about the only thing you noticed!" Jisung's voice was harsh, but Hyunjin noticed him suddenly blinking rapidly, as if he had something in his eyes. "I might wear glasses but you're the one that's blind, Felix."
"And you're not? You don't care about anyone but yourself, Jisung."
"That's a damn lie and you know it! You know what? I don't even know why I bother talking to you; it's not as if I can understand you!"
"Yeah? Maybe you can understand this!" Felix swore at him with incredibly vulgar language, a spitting combination of both English and Korean.
"Felix!" Minho said sharply, finally finding his voice to speak, but both of them ignored him. "
Jisung nodded in mock approval, "If your rapping was half as good as that, then maybe you'd actually have a chance of debuting!"
Felix was on his feet in a flash but fortunately, the door opened and Chan and Changbin came in.
"What's going on?" Chan asked, immediately sensing the tension.
Jisung ignored him, looking Felix dead in the eye. "Have fun with Dongjin in the basement while I'm on the stage." With that, he got up, and with a ferocious swipe at his eyes, exited the room, pushing past Chan and Changbin.
"Jisung!" Chan called after him, partly out of shock and partly out of concern, for he knew Jisung would never say something like that unless he was really hurt. Changbin took one look at Felix's smouldering glare and hurried out of the room after Jisung, sparing Felix a distasteful glance.
"What happened?" This he directed to Minho and Hyunjin, who were still standing there, shocked.
Hyunjin blurted out the whole incident, and when he'd finished, Minho quietly added his comments. The whole time, Chan was watching Felix, and he saw what Changbin- who'd rushed out and was probably too stubborn to see anyway- had missed- an expression of deep hurt beneath the anger.
When he'd heard the whole thing, he made a small decision. "I hear the rest coming. Minho, start practice, yeah? I'm going to have a chat with Felix,"
"You got it." Minho said grimly.
"Hey," Chan put a hand on his shoulder, motioning for Hyunjin to give them a little space, "It's hard to know what to do in the moment."
"I just- I should've-"
"No use worrying about it now. What's done is done. We have four other members that don't know what happened so let's keep it that way for now. Can you take care of them for me?"
"I-yeah, okay."
Chan patted his shoulder and steered him on his way. He made his way to the still-fuming Felix on the floor. "Mate-"
"No."
"I'm not asking, Felix." Chan hardened his tone enough for Felix to know he meant business. The younger grudgingly got up and followed him out the door. Chan headed into the nearest empty recording studio and sat him down.
They sat in silence for a few minutes.
Finally, Felix spoke. "We should be getting back to practice."
"We would be practicing right now," Chan reminded him.
"This isn't necessary-"
"Yes, it is." When Felix didn't answer, Chan leaned forward, "We're a team, man, we need to be united."
"I know that."
"'I'm glad. But this can't keep happening between you and Jisung,"
"We don't usually argue."
"Yes, Felix, but the rest of the team is so on edge around the two of you. It's affecting everyone. Hyunjin was in near hysterics just now just being in the room with the two of you. Minho was blaming himself for not being able to prevent the fight. Is that what our team has to go through from now on?"
Felix was silent, "I can't stand him. He's just so full of himself and he doesn't care about anyone," his tone was full of bitterness.
"I know he hurt you," Chan said in a softer tone, placing his hand on Felix's. Felix flinched, and Chan quickly drew his hand away, "Sorry, sorry."
"No, no, I'm sorry." Felix looked even more upset and he reached out to Chan.
Chan shook his head, smiling, although his heart was aching because he knew the reason why Felix had reacted like that, "There's nothing to be sorry about if you don't feel comfortable, Lix. Don't ever apologise for that."
Felix clasped his hands together and dipped his head. Seeing the familiar sight reminded Chan of something and he said, "By the way, we finished allocating parts for the song."
Felix waited for him to continue.
"Jisung did your part. To be honest, I thought I was going to have to force him to do it well, but it suits you." Chan fished out his phone to find the demo. He was going to show it to the rest of the members later, but he figured he might as well let Felix listen to his part now.
Felix listened to the part in silence. When it was over, he nodded slowly, still looking down.
Chan waited for his reaction, but Felix just continued looking at his hands.
"What exactly happened between you two?" He didn't say it loudly but Felix bent his head until it nearly touched the table.
"That's private," he rasped.
"I can't help you if I don't know what's going on."
"We don't need help."
"The team does. And you're part of the team, in case you forgot,"
But Felix continued to stubbornly look down, and in a movement so quick Chan nearly missed it, wiped his eyes. Chan waited for a little longer, then realised Felix wasn't in the mood to be pushed today. "Alright then, but whenever you feel like talking, come to me, yeah? Come on, let's get back to practice."
As a matter of fact, the same question was being asked to Jisung by Changbin at another recording studio. After chasing Jisung out of the studio, Changbin had yelled at him to stop but the younger had just run even faster. Finally, at the end of the corridor, Changbin caught him up.
"Hey, hey," Changbin grabbed onto Jisung's arm. "Geez, I don't need a workout before practice,"
"Let go of me!" Jisung turned his face away but Changbin saw the tears streaking his face.
Without a word, Changbin put his arm firmly around Jisuung's shoulders and steered him into a nearby recording studio. He sat him down on the chair and took a seat opposite him. By now, Jisung's tears were flowing freely, although he was trying to hide it, but Changbin gave him a reassuring smile, "Just let it out, Ji, since when have I judged you?"
That was all that Jisung needed to start sobbing unashamedly. Changbin let him have a good cry, awkwardly patting him on the shoulder. "That was kinda harsh, Ji," he ventured, when Jisung had finally stopped crying.
To his relief, Jisung didn't argue, just nodded his head. "I know, I didn't mean it. I wanted to mean it, but…" he shook his head brokenly.
"I've never heard you like that before," Changbin nudged his hand, "Something real bad happened between you and Felix, huh?"
"It's his problem."
"And that is…?"
"You should ask him."
"If you won't tell me, what makes you think he'll tell me?"
Jisung let out a watery chuckle. "I shouldn't be thanking you for this… but thanks for being on my side."
"Sure," Changbin said uncertainly, not quite understanding. "We all are, you know. Me and Chan-hyung only joined for you and the rest did too."
"Yeah, but they're doing it for him too. And Chan-hyung is so close to him because they're australian bros. You're the only one who seems to be only on my side."
That made Changbin a little uneasy. It was true that he didn't really hide his annoyance towards Felix, especially when he upset Jisung (who he looked on as a little brother, although he was loath to admit it). While he was happy it comforted Jisung, he supposed he was being a little unfair to Felix, especially if they were going to be a team.
"Of course," he said instead, "We should get back to practice,"
Jisung didn't know how he got through the rest of practice without throwing himself at Felix, but the two managed to stay civil. Everything the Australian did aggravated him; from the way he swept his hair from his eyes in such a distracting manner to even how he breathed in his hoarse voice, his stupid, low-pitched, deep voice that rumbled Jisung's belly- not in a good way of course, in an uncomfortable, stomach-churning way…
Anyway, as they headed back to the dorm, he noticed Chan and Changbin whispering together and Chan pulling Minho and Woojin in as well. Woojin looked shocked as he heard the news and threw a deeply disapproving glance towards Jisung, which he turned away to avoid seeing.
When he entered the dorm, he had barely thrown his things on the bed, when he heard a muffled thump and Felix was marched in, Woojin and Changbin locking his arms by his side and practically forcing him into the room. Chan and Minho followed, Minho closing the door on a confused Jeongin.
"Stay there, Ji," Chan strode over and practically shoved him onto his bed. Felix was maneuvered onto the bed opposite with his supervisors still holding onto him, glowering at Jisung the whole while. Minho sat down next to Jisung and Chan stood in the middle, looking between the two.
"This has been going on way too long and I know if I lock you two in this room and force you to talk it out, you'll just sit in this room and stare at each other until I have no choice but to let you out."
"Right."
"Mhm."
"But you guys better apologise to each other," Woojin interrupted.
Jisung could feel his lips curving up into a scowl.
"Jisung, I don't like that," Chan said suddenly, sounding like a disappointed dad, "You've been frowning so much more recently. Where did happy Jisung go, huh?"
"He's right," Changbin piped up, "I didn't even think you could get as mad as today, and I didn't even hear the whole thing."
"He started-"
"Nuh-uh! You did!" Felix argued.
"Stop," Woojin swatted at Felix's leg, eliciting a wince of pain from the younger. "Sorry, sorry, did I hit anything!"
Felix shook his head, but he took a second to swallow his grimace. For a second, Jisung wondered what Dongjin had done to him, but then he remembered Felix was an annoying brat who deserved to get his ass whooped once in a while… but maybe just not by Dongjin.
"Apologise to each other, please," Chan was almost begging. "I don't-" In a rare moment of helplessness, he seemed to be struggling and he looked lost.
Jisung felt so bad for him that the words just tumbled out of his mouth, "I'm sorry. I went too far."
The rest looked at him in shock, but it was only Chan's grateful face and Minho's light pat that didn't make him regret his choice. Felix studied him for a while, then responded quite sincerely, "I shouldn't have said that either, sorry."
They gave each other a curt nod. Chan looked extremely relieved and Changbin and Woojin let go of Felix.
"Thank you. I'm not going to ask you two to resolve all your problems right now, but can we just have professionalism? Professionalism," he repeated in English for Felix.
Jisung thought about it and smiled inwardly. It wasn't as if he had a problem being professional, but he felt like this was a good opportunity to stress the other members out, as long as Felix played along, that is. He would probably ruin it like always, but it was worth a shot.
"Okay," he smiled weirdly at Felix. It wasn't a sinister smile but neither was it his normal smile. It threw Felix off guard, he could tell, the latter eyeing him carefully as if trying to suss out what game he was playing. "Felix, how are you feeling after training?"
He felt Minho pinch his arm but he ignored it, looking only at Felix. On either side of Felix, he could see Changbin and Woojin exchanging confused looks and Chan starting forward, but he only concentrated on Felix's reaction. He lifted an eyebrow, daring Felix not to respond in kind.
There was a moment of silence, then Felix rolled his tongue around in his cheek, and said with a smirk, "I'm a little tired. My voice hurts for some reason, I can't think what I was doing."
Jisung was tempted to respond with a snarky retort, but instead he bugged his eyes out and said with perfect false sincerity, "Oh really? I'm sorry to hear that. Anything I can do for you?"
"This is creepy," Changbin muttered to Chan, "Make them stop."
Honestly, Jisung thought Felix would stop responding in kind but Changbin's remark seemed to bolster his confidence. "Actually, I'd love some help in my rap verse." his voice died out at the end as if he just realised what he'd proposed.
Jisung threw back his chest- if this was a challenge, he definitely wasn't going to back out- "Sure!"
Chan looked absolutely delighted and so proud.
Changbin thought the two would stop at their act, but over the next few days, they kept it up, feigning politeness in a way that was just darn right creepy. Both of them were so stubborn that even being polite to each other turned into a competition.
He wasn't the only one that thought so either. Hyunjin, Jeongin and Seungmin, the three who hadn't witnessed the intervention, just happened to be in the practice room with him and Jisung when Felix and Woojin came in.
All of them automatically tensed up but Felix smiled at Jisung tauntingly. "Hi, Jisung! Have you eaten?"
An audible gasp came from Hyunjin and Changbin saw Jeongin's jaw drop when Jisung replied, "Yes, I have! Thank you, Felix, for asking."
Their pleasantries over, Felix turned to greet the rest, a more genuine smile crossing his features. Jisung turned away but Changbin saw the grin spreading across his face when Hyunjin said in loud confusion, "Did you two hit your heads?"
"Now, why would you think that?" Felix asked in demure surprise.
Seungmin spread his hands, "You know what, I'd rather this than the arguing, I'm not complaining."
To this, all Felix gave was a sweet smile before sitting down.
Jisung on the other hand, had looked up sharply at these words and Changbin immediately feared what kind of evil scheme he was conocting. He didn't have to wait long, for Jisung got up and went over to Felix, who eyed him warily.
"Hey, Lix," he said with poisonous sweetness, "Didn't you say you wanted help with your rap? Come on," He offered his hand.
Felix stared, not at his hand, but into his eyes. "Okay, no that's weird," Jeongin grumbled. Jisung quirked an eyebrow in challenge, his hand still outstretched. There was a beat.
"Thank you, Ji," he grabbed onto Jisung's hand and allowed him to pull him up from the couch. The two made their way out of the practice room, presumably to find a recording studio.
Jeongin crawled over to Changbin. "What was that?"
Changbin and Woojin exchanged a sigh and Woojin quickly let the younger three in on the details.
The news elicited an exaggerated shiver from Hyunjin. "They're so weird."
"As long as they stop their arguing, I don't mind," Seungmin shrugged, going back to his journal.
Once they were out of the room, both dropped the smiles from their faces. They walked along in silence, before Felix asked, "Are we really going to practice?"
"If we go back too quickly, they'll suspect something," Jisung answered, not turning back to look at Felix. "We can just sit there."
"Bit of a waste of time, no?"
"You actually want my help?" Jisung stopped and turned to look Felix straight in the eye. The momentum caused by their still clasped hands- why were they still holding hands?- dragged them way too close until they were nearly nose-to-nose.
Jisung himself was a bit startled but he held eye contact. He saw Felix's Adam's apple bob… then with an offhand tilt of his head, the latter said, "Why not?"
There was an awkward pause as they stood nearly breathing into each other's faces. Then they both seemed to realise they were still holding hands and let go at the same time. Flame-faced, Jisung marched into a nearby recording studio.
Felix followed him, his heart pounding for some reason. He hesitated in the doorway, unsure whether or not to go in. Jisung was fussing about the seat, looking supremely uncomfortable, but upon realising Felix was still hovering in the door, beckoned impatiently.
"Well, are you waiting for an invitation?"
"Thanks for offering," Felix bit back as he sat down next to Jisung.
Jisung rolled his eyes, "Do you want my help or not?"
Rather than reply, Felix pulled out his practice book and flipped rather aggressively to a page of lyrics circled and marked with various handwritten notes. Jisung lifted his beanie and ran his hand through his hair with a sigh, "Okay, let's get to work."
"Got it," Felix leaned back and closed his eyes. He massaged his throat, voice hoarse from the constant practice. They had been in the practice room for hours, but he hadn't dared ask for a break for fear of a change in Jisung's mood. Because no matter how much he insulted Jisung, he couldn't deny it, the man had talent. And he had to give it to him as well; he hadn't made any snarky comments and maintained an air of detached professionalism throughout. In turn, Felix had also refrained from snapping and just sought to learn as much as he could.
"That's not bad," Jisung said, turning the page. "I think we can stop here."
"Right," Felix murmured, rubbing his eyes, "Thank you, Hannie-" He froze, his knuckles still digging into his eyeballs. Next to him, there was a sharp intake of breath.
The nickname was one he'd given Jisung before- everything. Hee had forgotten how comfortable he was with Jisung- if he ignored all the drama that had happened between them since then- and it had just slipped out.
"Han," he coughed, trying to cover it up. "Thank you, Han."
There was an awkward silence, then Jisung said sarcastically, "Just my surname? How unique."
Felix felt a huge sense of relief- he felt as if they'd just avoided a potentially extremely sticky and uncomfortable situation neither one of them were ready to handle. "Yeah, Han, you know I'm special."
Jisung grinned mischievously, the awkward moment glossed over. "Funny, I just remembered there's a popular guy in movies who always calls the main character by their last name. What type of movies again? Oh yeah, rom-coms."
"Are you saying you secretly like me?" Felix snorted with laughter.
"Are you saying I'm the main character?" Jisung deadpanned.
"Are you saying I'm popular?" Felix shot back.
"Are you saying you're going to fall in love with me?"
Felix started laughing for real this time, shaking his head. "You're impossible,"
"Love you too." Jisung's eyes widened as he realised what he said, "Too far, didn't mean it,"
To avoid another uncomfortable moment, Felix didn't dispute that point. He'd honestly forgotten how good it felt to laugh with Jisung and for a while, he felt hollow inside knowing he hated the guy.
As if the same thought occurred to him, Jisung's face fell. He cleared his throat and looked away. "We should- we should go back,"
Felix nodded, feeling a surprising dull ache in his stomach.
Jisung opened the door and Changbin and Hyunjin tumbled in, Seungmin and Jeongin just behind them, with Chan, Woojin and Minho standing slightly further back, all looking extremely sheepish. "Come on, guys!"
