Because People
A/N: I do not own anything other than my OCs when they come out to play. Everything else belongs to either Disney or the Greek Myths.
Alright, alright, third chapter done! Just two more to go (Jay and Ben) and it's almost hard to believe!
If anyone has any prompts they'd like me to try to write, send me an ask either in my PMs here or in my ask box in Tumblr! I've got the same user name there! :D
Hope you guys enjoy this chapter! Let me know what you think! :D
Evie sighed as she looked at the sketches of orders that she still needed to create. She was thrilled that so many people wanted her to design their outfits for Cotillion but at the same time, it was still stressful.
After all, her work was going to be on television, broadcasted all over the kingdom! She had to make sure that it looked good. Plus Chad had been contacting her every day with something different he wanted to change about his cape.
In all honesty, Evie wanted to take that cape and shove it down Chad's throat. But she couldn't do that.
If she did that, then she'd lose all the good will she'd built up from the other Auradon Prep students especially after the whole wand fiasco. Sure Jane had been the one to steal the wand from Fairy Godmother's hand and inadvertently caused the break in the barrier which caused Maleficent to escape—but no one forgot who it was who'd put the idea to use the wand to make herself pretty into Jane's head.
And the fact also remained that the memory of Evie attacking Chad with the sleeping solution was still relatively fresh in everyone's minds. And even if it wasn't…Auradon had a long memory. Just look at how Leah reacted to seeing Mal if you wanted proof about that.
So Evie pushed all thoughts of the Isle out of her's. If she didn't think about the Isle, about her mother…about Dizzy, with her vibrant red hair and glasses that were too big for her and made her ears stick out slightly and her passion for design…
Don't! Evie thought and shook her head. Thinking about Dizzy…it hurts too much. I know Ben's working hard at being King and getting used to the change of power, not to mention juggling the work of being both King and student. Still…I'd have thought that more VKs would have come over by now. It's been six months since Ben was crowned King after all…
She sighed and strolled over to the door to her bedroom, locking it with a swift turn of her wrist. Yes it wouldn't deter Jay if he stopped by…or Mal for that matter though Mal had been trying to stick to the Auradon way of living.
Even though Evie knew they were all kids from the Isle and that would never change, no matter how much Evie tried to tell herself otherwise.
The Isle was still where she came from, where she spent most of her life. Where she had been trapped for ten years with just her mother…
Don't! Evie thought as she shook her head, going over to a nearby drawer and pulling out some leather material. No one would fault her for taking some time to work on a personal project after all, and most if not almost all of the dresses and Chad's cape was complete. The only one that was left was Mal's and that was only because she was so busy it felt nearly impossible to get Mal in for a fitting.
But Evie knew Mal and she also knew Ben. She knew that once the craziness of Cotillion died down and Mal had been inducted into the royal court as Ben's lady, he would want to see the Isle. See where his friends came from. See the place that made Mal Mal so to speak.
You know it's funny, Evie thought with a small internal chuckle as she powered on her sewing machine. Mal's technically owed the title of Lady by right. After all, she's Hades' daughter. I'm actually surprised that Mal hasn't told Ben that, you'd think after everything that happened before the coronation that she'd have had enough of secrets between them.
Then again, it's possible she has already told him and Ben's just cool with it. Though he would have mentioned something about getting Mal her title of Lady as is owed her as a Godling…maybe that's why Mal's being inducted into the royal court at Cotillion? After all, Mal's not exactly thrilled of her title. Or her relationship to Hades for that matter. Maybe this is Ben's way of giving Mal her title without actually giving it to her…though the fact that Mal hasn't said anything about Ben wanting her to meet Hercules, I doubt she's said anything to him.
"Hello? Evie? Why's the door locked?" Carlos' voice called a few minutes later, not that Evie could necessarily hear him over the hum of her sewing machine.
Sure there were quieter ones and she had the money to be able to get a quieter sewing machine, but this was the first sewing machine she'd gotten while in Auradon. Actually…it'd been a gift from Ben. Ben had approached her after talking to Mal by her locker and wanted to know if there was anything to make things easier for her to adjust to Auradon.
Evie had been a bit hesitant—the 'lovely' welcome from Audrey had still been fresh in her mind—but eventually she had told Ben about how she liked to make her own clothes. By the end of the day, a sewing machine had been delivered to their dorm.
Ben had even included a note, apologizing for the more vintage style of the machine but it was the only one he could find in blue and he'd noticed that had been a color preference of her's.
"Hey Evie! Come on, you mad at Mal for some reason?" Jay's voice joined Carlos' but Evie paid him no mind. She wanted to get this jacket done. Knowing Ben, a trip to the Isle could come any moment.
"There we go!"
Evie lifted her head to see Jay and Carlos standing in the now open doorway. Shaking her head, she looked back down at the sewing machine. The last thing she'd want would be to accidentally sew herself to Ben's jacket because she was distracted.
"Evie?" Jay prodded as the two boys walked into the room, Carlos closing the door behind them but pausing to allow Dude to trot after them. "Are you okay?"
"Fine Jay," Evie said. "I just need to get this done."
"…did Chad change his cape to a jacket?" Carlos asked as Dude hopped up on Mal's bed as if to get a better look.
Evie sighed and paused her sewing. "No, he still has the cape. I just…I needed time to work on a personal project. A breather if you will."
"Oh…you needed a 'because people' moment," Carlos nodded. "Say no more E, I've been there. Especially with how many people have been coming to you for dresses and what not, you're almost as busy as Mal."
"So what's this personal project of yours?" Jay asked.
Evie smiled as she handed Jay the sketch of the jacket, not wanting to risk the actual product from falling apart. "I figured that at some point, Ben would want to see the Isle. And since he practically lives in his suits, it might make sense if he has something that would allow him to blend in."
"You really think Ben would want to go to a place that his father set up and where he's not exactly Mr. Popular?"
"I think Ben would want to go to a place where Mal used to live so he could see what made Mal 'Mal'." Evie countered.
"…you may have a point there," Jay said. "Well practice is over for us and I don't know about you but I'm all peopled out. Especially since Chad was his usual annoying self at practice. Hows about Carlos and I go and grab some snacks, keep you company?"
"What about Mal?" Evie asked. "Last time one of us had a 'Because People' moment, we were all there."
"I'll throw Ben in her path," Jay said. "She deserves some time with Benny with how busy they've both been. Besides, I figured you would want this jacket to be a surprise for Mal too."
"You'd be correct about that," Evie nodded.
"Okay then," Carlos grinned. "Dude, stay here and keep Evie company while Jay and I get the snacks."
Evie chuckled as Dude barked in what seemed like confirmation. It didn't take that long before the boys were back and the door was locked once more. Both boys piled onto Mal's bed and filled Evie in on what happened at practice while she sewed.
Yeah I know Jay and Carlos are people, Evie thought as she continued to work. But they're my people. Same with Mal and Ben in a way. And yeah I wish Mal could be here too but at least she's getting a break…wait, what did Jay do to ensure said break?
"Jay? How mad is Mal going to be when she comes back here?"
"Not really," Jay shrugged. "I just locked both her and Ben in the art classroom. She gets a twofer this way—she gets time with art and time with Ben. And you don't have to worry about cutting your personal project short."
Evie chuckled. "You're the best Jay."
"Eh, tell me something I don't know," Jay grinned.
