Chapter 21
So, chapter 20. A new phase to the story. Let me know what you think!
"Mike, come and look at this," Jack continued to look at the engineering diagrams he found in the cabin, even as he heard Mike come up behind him.
"What?"
"You know what these are?"
"Looks like diagrams of the boat, inside and out," he jolted forward as Sayid got the boat moving, "Why?"
"No reason, just wondered if they'd come in handy that's all."
They were picking up speed, Jack feeling as though this plan had worked. He saw the clump of trees to the left approaching, could see the distant trees of their island, felt as though everything was going to be alright. Until he heard a heavy thump on the deck, and Walt scream Sawyer's name. He and Mike acted without thinking, whirling around to go back through the cabin door.
As soon as the door was open, bullets started flying. They threw themselves to the ground. Jack scrambled, towards the back of the boat, seeing Sawyer laying on the ground in front of him, his body jerking out of control. Without thinking, Jack touched him, receiving the biggest electric shock of his life, hearing himself yelling out in pain. Mike was shouting at Walt to stay down, who was hiding with his back against the back of the boat, crying. The noise of the boat and bullets meant Jack had to yell at Sayid.
"Cover! We need cover now! Behind the trees Sayid! Get us out of their line of fire!"
He felt the boat swerve dangerously to the left. Jack tried to get closer to Sawyer, but the boat was too unsteady. Bullets still pounded the boat, the noise deafening. He just had to lay there, waiting for something to happen.
Then it did, the bullets stopped. He opened his eyes – not realising he had closed them – and looked over at Mike, who was trying to stand, trying to get to Walt. Jack looked at Sayid.
"Are you ok?"
"I am fine. I took cover behind the trees, but we will be off course to get back to our camp." He didn't look at Jack as he said this, just continued to steer the boat towards the other island. Jack looked out the back of their boat, pulling himself up to his knees. They were completely hidden by the trees. Mike had made it to Walt, both sitting on the ground, Mike hugging his son as both had tears on their faces. Jack looked down at Sawyer, his body still twitching painfully.
"Is he ok?" Jack looked over as Walt spoke, seeing the boy stare at Sawyer, "He pushed me out the way, jumped in front of me, threw himself in the way. It was Ben, Sawyer saw him. He shot him with the taser. He... he jumped in front of me."
Jack crouched by Sawyer's head, putting his fingers to his neck, jumping back at the shock he got. The charge was even stronger than before. He gritted his teeth, feeling the electricity course through his arm as he held his fingers to Sawyer's neck.
"Son of a bitch!" Mike watched as Jack shouted out, saw him try to turn Sawyer on to his back.
Finally coming to his senses, Mike responded, "What?"
"He doesn't have a pulse."
"What?!" Mike let go of Walt, scrambling to help Jack, grabbing Sawyer's leg to help turn him, snatching his hands back in pain at the shock he received.
"I know it hurts but we need to help him."
Mike saw Jack's fingers had a blackened colour to them, understanding he was in pain and knowing it had to be done. He felt Walt crawl beside him.
"No," Jack shouted at Walt as he went to touch Sawyer, "Don't touch him."
Together, Jack and Mike turned Sawyer on to his back. Jack ripped open his shirt, revealing another large, star shaped black and blue burn, spanning the width of Sawyer's chest, burned deep onto his skin, almost to the bone. Jack stopped, hearing Mike gasp, then he started CPR. He pressed hard on the already battered and bruised chest, alternating breaths every so often. After breathing into Sawyer's mouth three separate times, Jack raised his fist and slammed it on to Sawyer's chest. Nothing happened.
"Come on! Come on Sawyer fight!" Jack was shouting at the unconscious man, Walt had started crying again, pressing his face into Mike's shirt. Jack slammed his fist again. Then again. On the fourth time, Sawyer's body rose slightly, breath rattling through his mouth and lungs as he gasped for air. Jack let out a sob, Walt's head snapping to look at Sawyer, Mike looking skyward. Jack put a hand on each side of Sawyer's face as he opened his eyes slightly.
"Sawyer? Sawyer can you hear me?" He watched as the man's eyes slid shut, "No, no, no, Sawyer?" Then a thought came to him, he whispered, "James?" Sawyer's eyes opened again, "James can you hear me?" Sawyer looked at Jack for a brief second, a small smile playing on his lips. Then his eyes rolled back in his head and he started shaking.
"He's seizing, Mike grab him, help me turn him on his side," together, Jack and Mike rolled Sawyer on to his right, towards Jack.
The seizing was strong, slowing and stopping, lasting a little under a minute in total. No one moved, the boat still moving fast.
"Is - is he ok?" Walt sounded scared.
"I don't know. This is insane." Jack put his face in front of Sawyer's, keeping him on his side, trying to wake him.
Mike watched as Jack spoke to Sawyer, who was shaking slightly on the boat deck. He looked down at Walt. He was shaking too, staring at Sawyer through the tears in his eyes. Mike stroked Walt's head, hugging him hard. He looked around the boat, noticing they were nowhere near where they started, nowhere near where they were aiming to go.
"Sayid?! How long?" Jack had looked over at Sayid, who didn't look back at him.
"We are near, but at the wrong side of the island."
"It doesn't matter, just get us on land quickly. I need to make sure he's ok."
The boat picked up speed, causing the three passengers to fall with the force of it. In no time, the boat started slowing, gradually bumping over the sand.
