Chapter 40
Next yup. Let me know what you think!
Jack stepped forward, bending his right knee and sitting on the bed.
"How are you feeling?"
"Fine. Good actually."
"Sure you're not in pain?"
"No pain. I don't even feel like I'm here."
"That's the morphine..."
"The what?"
"Morphine. Don't worry about it. I have it covered. Just relax."
"Where are we?"
"Back at the hatch... we made it," Jack smiled at him. He was about to ask something else, but Sawyer moved his gaze to the door. Jack turned to see Rose standing there, tray of food in hand. She smiled.
"Hey. You're awake. How are you?"
"Good. I'm good." Rose put the tray down on the bottom of the bed, sitting down on the chair Jack had left.
"Sawyer, I need to check you over, make sure you're ok. You've been through a lot."
"It's fine..."
"Stop. I need you to take a deep breath for me," Jack put his hand on the bandages, gently, feeling Sawyer's chest rise. The air wasn't rasping anymore. "How does that feel?"
"Ok," The reply had a breathless quality to it, Jack looked at his face.
"What... what is it? Your chest?"
"Yeah... breathing's hard..."
"Ok. It's ok. Just relax. That'll get better. Can you move your arms for me?"
Sawyer managed to move his right arm, he let out a groan as the arm moved an inch on the bed. He closed his eyes and gritted him teeth as he moved his left. As it moved he let out a low moan.
"Ok, that's enough. You ok?"
"Yeah. I'm fine."
"Ok, move your legs." Jack watched as Sawyer screwed up his eyes and twitched his legs. It wasn't much, but Jack didn't push. He could see the pain in Sawyer's face. "OK, good. That's good. Just relax. Are you in pain...?"
"No, I'm fine."
"Just tell me, I can help..."
"No, it's ok. Don't worry." This made Jack laugh. But Rose spoke first.
"Of course we're worried, you almost died. We want to make sure you're ok." Sawyer just looked at her.
"How much do you remember?"
"Em... I'm not sure. I remember we were on a boat... weren't we?"
"Yeah... yeah we were. Do you remember..." he glanced at Rose, "being with The Others?" Sawyer just looked at him, a small smile on his face. He nodded.
"Yeah. I remember. Then we were on the boat... Ben was on the sand with the... Walt... is he ok?" He was trying to sit, yelling in pain when he did.
"Woah, stop. He's fine, we're all fine. Just lie back, and relax. It's ok."
As Sawyer closed his eyes and tried to slow his breathing, Jack looked at Rose. She was staring at Sawyer, alarmed at his sudden outburst.
"Where's the kid?"
"He's at the beach, with Mike and Sayid. You remember the boat?"
"Yeah."
"Do you remember anything after the boat?"
"This and that. Not much. Why? How long we been here?"
"We were on the boat... two weeks ago." Jack watched Sawyer react. He just stared at him, almost as if he didn't believe him.
"Two weeks?"
"Yeah. Yeah two weeks."
"I don't remember..."
"That's ok. It's ok. It's probably for the best..."
"That bad huh?" He smirked at Jack, not getting a smile in response, "Are you ok?"
"Course. I'm fine." Jack watched as Sawyer didn't believe him. He heard movement outside the room, without a word he stood and walked out the door.
"Is he ok?" Rose looked at Sawyer as he spoke. He was still breathing heavy, except now he looked worried.
"Yeah. Yeah he's ok. He's just worried about you. You've all been through a lot. But you'll be ok." She leaned forward, putting her hand on his. He looked confused.
"It was that bad eh?"
"I'm just glad you're ok."
"Yeah?"
"Don't act so surprised." They just locked eyes, not mentioning what they were both thinking. "I brought food. Here..." She grabbed the tray, just as Jack came back, John behind him.
"Hey, heard you were awake. How you doing?"
"Good," Sawyer looked at Jack, "anyone else out there?"
"No. No just the three of us. We've kept everyone else out. Just us." Sawyer was watching Jack as he spoke.
"Right. Are you ok?"
Jack was getting annoyed with this question. Sawyer was lying there, hardly able to move, yet he keeps asking... "Yes. I told you I'm fine. You need to eat..."
"I was getting to that," Rose nodded at the tray in her hands. The siren sounded, John tapped Sawyer on the foot before leaving. Rose spooned up some runny porridge and leaned towards Sawyer.
"What is that?"
"Jack said..."
"You've hardly had any solid food for three weeks, you need to start small."
"I can do..."
"No. You can't. It's ok, let me do it," she leaned close, spooning some food into his mouth. He just watched her, his eyes darting to Jack, as if asking him to make her stop. But Jack didn't say anything.
