"I've never really had problems with asthma before," Kaito confesses between horrible raspy breaths, too short and fast and definitely not deep enough.
"Stop talking, idiot, and tell me where your inhaler is!" Shinishi says, digging through the school bag Kaito had dropped outside the school gate. Decks of cards keep bursting into confetti or rose petals and make everything that much harder.
"Pretty sure it's in my house," Kaito says, voice muffled by his hand.
"Damn it!" Shinichi looks around them, but there was still no one on the campus, too early in the morning for most other students to bother arriving. 4 AM is usually too early for most people.
"Shinichi. Forget about it." Kaito grabs his shoulder, leaning into his side and pulling his arm around him.
Shinichi tightens his arms, dragging Kaito further into his chest and trying to think of what could help. Kaito can't regulate his breathing, needs to focus on something else, and even if Shinichi can't carry a tune, he can certainly keep time.
He starts low, barely above the sound of Kaito's breath, and raises his voice when Kaito starts to shake a little harder.
It is with weezy laughter this time, though.
Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun worked last time Kaito needed help calming down.
Shinichi keeps raising his voice until Kaito starts to take deeper breaths and relaxes into Shinichi. He knows they look really dumb, tangled together on the ground in front of Edoka Middle and surrounded by confetti and rose petals with Shinichi singing an off-key song about a fish becoming taiyaki.
"That's a mean way to calm me down," Kaito says, his attack over but not moving away from Shinichi.
"It worked, didn't it?" Shinichi says, coughing a little to clear his throat. "You'd either laugh at the terrible singing or freeze in fear of the fish. It seemed like a good choice."
"I can't believe you wanted to scare me out of an asthma attack," Kaito laughs and pulls back just a little to look Shinichi in the face. Kaito is still a little flushed and pink, but he is smiling. "Thanks Shinichi."
Kaito presses a kiss to Shinichi's cheek, laughing loudly when Shinichi freezes and blushes himself. Kaito pulls out of Shinichi's hold, standing up and offering his hand to pull him up.
"Don't forget your inhaler again," Shinichi says, taking the hand and looking away from Kaito's pink face. "I'm not always gonna be here."
"True." Kaito taps his chin and then sticks out his tongue. "But your voice will be with me forever!"
Kaito clicks the little clover charm on his uniform collar, and Shinichi's singing echoes between them.
"You were having an asthma attack and still thought to do that?!"
"I knew I wanted to remember whatever you were gonna do," Kaito admits with only a small increase to his pink face as he blushes. "Now I get to have it forever!"
"Just until I take it! Stop playing it!" Shinichi reaches out, but Kaito is slippery and wily, and he knows he won't catch the other boy until Kaito wants to get caught. Kaito prances backwards, picking up his pace as Shinichi follows after. "You just had an attack! Don't start running!"
