Lost in unfamiliar worlds

Chapter 11 The human in the attic

When Anne woke up, she was surprised to find a soft purple pillow placed below her head as well as a blanket over her body. She glanced around, it was a small unpainted wooden room with a few boxes piled in the corner, the sun crept in through a small round window. Anne didn't recognize the place but she didn't detect any hostility from it either. Slowly she sat up gently pulling the blanket of her before being greeted by a familiar face.

"Your awake, good, I was beginning to worry you'd never wake up" the purple hair girl said walking towards her.

"Amity? Where am I?" Anne asked as she stood from the ground only to have her legs collapse beneath her.

"Carful, you were stung by the Drowsing Rose, you've been asleep for the last 12 hours, guess you must have needed it"

"My body feels weak" Anne mumbled as she massaged her aching head. "What time is it?"

"Just turned 9:00, here" Amity placed a tray of food in front of her, there was a tower of pancakes covered in a purple gooey sauce and a glass filled with what Anne hoped was milk. "You went to sleep last night without eating and you were stung by the drowsing rose, you must be starving, please eat up" Amity sat opposite her as Anne cautiously took a bite out of the pancake, that first bite was all she needed before she began scoffing them down like some kind of feral beast.

"Cough, cough"

"Don't forget to swallow human, here drink the milk" Amity said passing her the glass.

Anne drunk the milk slowly, then put the half full glass back down before letting out a gasp of enjoyment. "I haven't eaten food like this in what feels like forever"

"Really, but Luz told me this was very similar to human food"

"Whos Luz?" Anne asked catching Amity of guard.

"Oh ermm- more importantly I think its time you told me how you got here human"

Now it was Anne's turn to freeze up, she sheepishly looked away before meeting her icy glare. Multiple conflicting thoughts circled round her mind as she struggled to answer the witch.

I guess we can tell her, she did save our life

But we hardly know her, she could be working with that blonde guy for all we know!

But look at her, she went out of her way to keep us hidden and fed, when she barely even knows us.

Yeah, but that could all be a trick, do you really want to be taken for a fool again!

Anne let out a long sigh as she pushed the tray away and shuffled her back to the wall, holding her knees to her chest she averted her gaze from Amity, starring down at the ground. "I'm sorry… I just can't"

Amity let out a disappointed breath as awkward silence filled the room. She felt bothered by her refusal to answer any of her questions but could tell that something was upsetting the young girl and didn't push the issue further. Instead she took a seat next to Anne "Look, I don't know what your going through or what you've been through, but I can tell whatever it was wasn't easy and its obvious your still upset about it" Amity placed a comforting hand on her shoulder as Anne buried her head deeper into her arms. "I don't want to be intrusive but if I'm going to continue to help you, I need to know more about you"

Anne slowly lifted her head, her eyes weighed down as she looked at Amity with an almost apologetic smile. "Its just- the last person I placed my trust in got themselves killed and me stranded in this place… I know your trying to help me but… I don't know if I'm ready to take that risk again"

For a while the room was filled with silence and Anne could tell by the confusion written across her face that she didn't really understand what she meant. Which of course made sense, she wasn't there after all, so it was only natural she'd be neglectful of the pain she had to endure. Anne lifted her head a small smile forming across her face, it was pointless unloading all this on her, she'd apologize and leave as soon as she had the strength to walk again.

"I still want to help you"

Anne looked at Amity with wide eyes, she must have misheard her and so she asked her to repeat herself. Amity turned to Anne and pulled her into a hug surprising the taller girl "I still want to help you, even if you can't bring yourself to trust me. I know what it's like to have no one to turn to, to have no one to rely on, to feel lost within a mist of self worth. That's why I want to- No! I have to help you, because I can tell you're a good person, scared and a bit dim but a good person all the same."

"Why?" Anne asked, in a hard to hear whisper as she leaned on her Amitys shoulder, tears beginning to build.

"Because its what she would want me to do and because I already made a choice a long time ago to be a better person and that starts by helping you. Even if I don't personally gain anything from this, It's still the right thing to… Anne?" Amity cut herself of as she felt tears running down her back. Anne tightened her grip around Amity holding onto her shirt. Amity didn't know what had brought this on but she could tell something had been bothering her from there very first meeting. It was obvious Anne had gone through something bad and Amity couldn't lie, she was curious but now wasn't the time. Amity stayed on the floor stroking her back like a mother comforting there child as she allowed Anne to sob onto her shoulder until she was ready to let go.

A few minutes passed and the girls separated from each other, once she had calmed down Anne felt a little embarrassed breaking down like that in front of a stranger. Amity noticed Anne's bashful behavior and pushed the discarded food towards her suggesting she should try and regain her appetite.

"Sorry about your shirt and… If you want to ask me some questions I think I'm ready to talk now" Anne said, with a small smile.

Amity nodded as she got to work "Okay, so lets start with the obvious, your name is Anne; a human from earth right?" Anne nodded as she shoveled the food into her mouth. "How long has it been since you arrived in the boiling isles?"

Anne paused "Is that what this place is called, probably about a day if I spent the night here"

"Right, then assuming you came here from earth, my next question would be, how did you get here?" Amity asked, this was one she really hoped Anne was willing to answer.

"Hehe, actually theres a little bit more to it than that" Anne answered, causing Amity to raise a curious brow.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, when I was on Earth, I came across this music box and when I opened it up I ended up in another world full of frogs, newts and toads. I was trapped there by myself for months on ends with nothing but the clothes on my back"

"That must have been horrible" Amity said, giving her sympathetic look.

"Oh it was! I was forced to eat bugs, bath in mud and endure all sorts of toxic smells but it wasn't all bad"

"How so?"

"I ended up staying with a family of frogs; the Plantars, at first they were wary of me, treating me like some sort of monster but as time went on we became close, almost like a real family"

"Tell me about them"

"Well, there's Hop Pop but I call him HP for short, he's the grandpa of the family and usually the voice of logic and reason. Polly is like a little sister to me, she's prone to violence but often means well and Sprig her big brother. The goof ball is often getting himself into trouble but he only really wants to help people, he just often causes more problems then he dose solutions. Honestly, we make one hell of a team, if it wasn't for all of them, I probably wouldn't have made out of Amphibia alive"

"And how did you get out?" Amity asked.

Sasha! What are you doing!

I'm doing this for us Anne!

I hate you! We're no longer friends!

I did this for us, can't you see!

Sprig!

Get out of here Anne!

Marcy!

Now look what you made me do!

"Anne? You okay?" Amity asked, as she gently shook her shoulder.

"Ye-Yeah I'm fine" Anne stuttered as she gulped down the rest of her drink. "Anyway, to answer your question, we managed to find a way to get the music box working again and ended up here" Anne was quick to keep the conversation moving and Amity noticed the sudden change in confidence as she spoke.

Amity realised a sigh of defat choosing not to press the issue further and continued "Then the Plantars came here with you? Where are they?"

Anne paused, a nervous anxious frown covering her face as she finished her breakfast, she slowly stood from the floor, her strength returning. "I don't know, my best guess is that we were separated when we arrived here, that's what happened last time so it makes sense. Wherever they are, I have to find them and get them back home before something bad happens."

Amity stood from the ground and offered out her hand a small smirk forming across her face "I'll help you, maybe it's asking to much of you to tell me everything all at once but for now lets say we start by being friends" Anne nodded and grabbed her hand. The two girls stood there, a new bond slowly began forming but just as this new friendship began to blossom, so did the seed of doubt. Amity was smart enough to notice the inconstancies and lies in her story and couldn't help but wonder what she could be trying to hide. Anne on the other hand was happy that Amity was willing to help her but couldn't shake the feeling that she was being used somehow. This tiny dark seed had the potential to grow into a weed of paranoia and suspicion killing of the flower of friendship blooming in there hearts.

Authors note: Okay, so I want to give a little explanation for Anne's head space for those who may be wondering why she's being so secretive. First, lets remind our self that only days ago both her best friends had stabbed her in the back, on top of that she'd witnessed her best friend get stabbed through the back. Now unlike the cannon universe Anne has been thrown into a world where she has no one she can rely on or trust, the Plantars are missing and she's unfamiliar with the rules of this world. With everything that's happened she's obviously going to be a little hesitant to open up to people again, especially strangers. In the cannon she's reunited with her parents which of course she trusts and is able to open up with (though it dose take a little time) here she has no one like that. On top of that the Plantars aren't by her side to give her advice and push her in the right direction either so with all that I think it makes sense that Anne would be a little hesitant to open up to anyone right now.

Sorry about that, I just didn't want anyone complaining Anne was out of character, I thought about this long and hard in planning and I really think it makes sense, not just from a character point of view but from a human point of view.
