Lucy POV
Tears stream down my face as I run as fast as I can, pushing men out of my way. I again, hear Randy calling out my name, but I ignore him as I continue to run. Run as if my life depended on it. At the moment it does. Not my physical life, but everything else that comes with it. Having my heart broken is worse than having something physically broken by my father. That pain is so much more bearable.
Collapsing from too much exertion, I fall to my hands and knees and crawl to the nearest bush to hide. I hear Randy still calling for me and his breezes past me as he continues to chase after me. My chest heaves as I continue to try and catch my breath.
It's been a while since hearing or seeing Randy, so I feel that it is safe to continue my dreaded trek back to the only thing I know…my abusive father. I know I'll be in for it the second I walk through the door, but it will be a welcomed pain to distract me from the pain of losing Drew…losing something I never had.
What I don't count on, is being silently followed all the way back to my home.
Randy POV
The second I decide to give up, I see Lucy tread past me about a few yards away. She is not aware that I am near, nor that I decide to follow her to see where she goes. It doesn't take long, maybe an hour until Lucy starts to slow her steps and finally comes to a complete stop at the edge of the forest and looks out to a small cabin that sits off in the distance.
Lucy disappears from the foliage of the forest and I silently follow to the edge as I watch her walk back to what I am assuming is where she ran away from in the first place. The moment she disappears through the door, I shake my head and curse Drew for his stupidity. I know it was Drew because Lucy had no reason to flee the way she did, unless it was from something he did or said.
The second I step foot back into camp, I am going to give the bastard a piece of my mind. He could have had something with her if he just listened to what I told him to do, but being the stubborn man that he is, I know he disregarded everything I told him not to do and did it anyway. Hence, why Lucy went back to her abuser.
I want nothing more than to go to that cabin and rescue her from the abuse I have no doubt she is receiving at this very moment, but I know Lucy is a strong woman and she can take care of herself. She's already proven that, not only with surviving her fathers wrath for the better part of 20+ years, but the past day and a half she has spent with my jackass of a best friend.
I make it back to camp just as the sun sets and I march my way towards the tent where we plan for current or further battles or any other attacks that we may come across. That is the only place I know Drew will be. It's where he goes to distract himself and right now, I know he needs distracting from the shit he pulled earlier in the day.
I forcefully make my way into the tent and startle Drew from whatever it was he was doing. "What the fuck is wrong with you?!" I boom at him and a quick look of confusion crosses his features until one of understanding and guilt wash over.
"I don't want to talk about it, Randy," Drew says, his tone defeated and if I weren't so pissed at him, I would have felt bad for him for being in his current state, but he is the way he is right now because of his own stupidity.
"Oh no. We are going to talk about it. What the hell did you do to her, Drew? What did you say?!" I yell at him and his eyes become hard.
"You may be my best friend, but I am also your king and I will not let you speak to me like that," Drew threatens me, his voice a few octaves lower than normal.
"Don't give me that shit, McIntyre. I don't care if you ruled the whole fucking world, let alone Scotland. What did you say to her? I've never seen someone flee so quickly unless their life depended on it and I know her life was not in danger. So tell me…what did you say? What did you do?" I demand him, my own eyes becoming hard with anger.
"It's none of your concern," Drew replies calmly and my eyes flare with rage.
"Oh, it is most certainly my concern. Especially, when Lucy returns back to where she originally fled from to begin with!" I boom and a look of shock and fear flash before his eyes, but they become hard once more as he advances on me.
Drew slams me into one of the tables and I land hard on my back, groaning in pain, but I push through it with the adrenaline running through my veins. I quickly get to my feet and punch Drew square in the face, causing him to stumble back a few steps. "What did you do, Drew?!" I bellow out, grabbing him by the shirt and shaking him violently.
Placing his hands on my chest, Drew forcefully pushes me off of him as he huffs to catch his breath, "she took what I said out of context," he tells me, his tone hard.
I look at him as if he's gone insane, "and? What did you say to her?" I ask Drew again, making sure my voice is just as hard. We both square off as we stare at each other intently. We've caught the attention of some of the guys and they walk into the tent to see what was going on.
"What in the hell is going on in here?!" One of them asks, but both Drew and I ignore him as we continue to glare at one another.
"What did you say, Drew?" I ask him more calmly, but my tone is still hard.
Drew opens his mouth to go and respond, but he snaps it shut and whips his head in the direction of his soldiers, "there is nothing to see or hear, leave immediately and if I learn that any of you eavesdrop, there will be consequences," he addresses them in a tone that is not to be trifled with. "NOW!" He booms when they don't move and the second he yells, they scatter.
Drew waits till every last man leaves the room and turns his attention back to me and it's almost as if he's given up fighting and his body deflates, "I told her that I'm not use to having to deal with someone like her," he says and I look at him like he's lost his goddamn mind. I go to open my mouth to respond, but he holds a hand up to stop me, "I didn't mean it the way I say it. I've never dealt with someone being so closed off and skittish as she is and that I had to get use to it. I told her to take her time and come to me when she was ready, but she took it as me saying that she's been nothing but a burden since being brought here.
"I'm falling for her Randy and I want nothing more than to pull her into my arms and kiss her senseless, but I can't even do that because she's never had a man's touch before. Only the abuse of her father…that she's gone back to," Drew says with fear and worry in his tone. He looks down and then back up at me with a look of determination in his eyes, "I have to go and get her. I don't care what she says or how much she fights me, I would never forgive myself if something were to happen to her by his hands," he tells me and I can see he means every last word because I nod my head at him.
"I'll go get the horses ready; I'm coming with you. Lucy needs to know that she is cared for and not a burden," I tell Drew and he nods his head once in confirmation.
"I'll be right behind you, I want to grab something quick first," Drew tells me and leaves the tent without giving me a chance to respond. With a big sigh, I hastily make my way to the horses and get mine and Drew's ready for our journey to Lucy.
Lucy POV
Just as the sun sets, I make it to the front door of my home and hesitantly go to open it. I know what I am in for and I don't know if I'm prepared for the pain and suffering that is about to come my way.
I take a deep breath and open the wooden door and to my abuser. I try to step in quietly, but the squealing of the door has me flinching at it's loud sound; knowing that it will catch the attention of my father.
"Who's there?! Who the fuck do you think you are walking into my house!" he yells from another room and his voice gets louder as he gets closer to the main room.
The second he appears from around the corner, my heart becomes lodged in my throat at the feral look that crosses his face upon seeing me. "Well, well, well. Look who decided to come back home. It's my no good slut of a daughter. Where the fuck have you been?!" He booms at me; I whimper and cower at his volume before regrettably answering him.
"I–I was found by…by some of King McIntyre's…men and…and they brought me…back…to his camp. I've been with him…this whole time," I answer quietly, stuttering out my answer in fear. I'm starting to regret leaving Drew to come back here. I'd give anything to go back and change my decision to not leave.
He chuckles menacingly…drunkenly and advances on me, "first you run away and then you have the audacity to lie to me!" He bellows out and backhands me so hard, I am catapulted into the front door and I fall to the floor like a rag doll from the impact. My split lip reopens, but I can feel that it has become worse with how hard I was hit.
I cry out in pain and cover my mouth as I look up at the man I am suppose to call my father with unadulterated fear. "I'm not lying…it's the truth," I yell and his eyes widen at the volume I respond.
"You lying bitch! How dare you raise your voice to me! And make up stories about being rescued by the King," he scoffs, "like he'd want anything to do with your sorry pathetic ass. Then again, you probably let him take you up the ass, like the whore that you are," father spits at me.
I don't answer his derogatory comment as I continue to cry on the floor. I refuse to look up at him, but it seems to make him that much more angry. "Answer me! You no good piece of shit!" He yells, kicking me in the abdomen and I cry out in pain, curling in on myself, protecting my stomach.
"No," I whisper, "he didn't. He showed me nothing but kindness," I reply quietly, then suddenly gain a bout of confidence, "unlike you. He never once laid a hand on me. He wants to be with me!" I cry out, raising my voice.
His eyes become enraged at the volume of my voice and a sound I've never heard come from him before, is released and it sounds like a possessed growl, "how dare you speak to me that way. Who do you think you are! Why do you continue to lie?! He would never want anything to do with you, let alone be with you. He'd be stupid to do so. He probably used you for a quick fuck and tossed you aside like the cheap trash that you are," he verbally blows to me and picks me up by my hair.
"Yes, he does want to be with me and Drew not stupid! You are for even saying that about your king!" I yell, coming to Drew's defense, "he would never touch me that way without my consent. He is a real man and that is more than I can say for you," I spit out at my father and he punches me in the face, causing me to fall to the floor again.
"WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!" He screams louder than I've ever heard him and he kicks me repeatedly wherever he can get a hit in on me. "And he is Drew now, huh? Yeah, you are fucking him…you whore."
I don't even entertain his train of thought. I just continue to lay fetal position and take the abuse, thinking about Drew and his kind touches and smile. What I'd give to see it and him again. As if my prayers are answered, the front door is taken off its hinges.
Drew POV
In the distance, but with the cabin in view, Randy and I hear the bellow of Lucy's father. "Shit," I shout and kick my horses haunches, getting him to speed up and what seems like an eternity later, I finally make it to the house.
I jump off my horse, leaving him to Randy to contain and kick the door in and off its hinges. What I find has my blood boiling and my eyes becoming filled with white hot rage. Acting on instinct, I rip the asshole off of Lucy and throw him across the room.
"Who the fuck do you think you are, laying a hand on her?!" I yell, "you cowardly piece of shit!" I advance on the man and pull him up off the floor by his shirt and revel in the fear I see cross his face at seeing me, "you think you're a real man for hitting a woman…your own daughter no less!" I scream in his face.
I can hear Lucy whimpering on the floor as Randy quietly consoles her. I hold the piece of shit against the nearest wall and look over my shoulder at Lucy and Randy. Seeing her face splotched with bruises and her lip split even worse than what it was, has my rage coming to the surface tenfold.
She looks up at me with tears in her eyes as she clings to Randy, "Drew," she rasps out and it takes everything in me not to kill the motherfucker in front of me.
"I know, baby. I'm gonna get you out of here," I tell her and then turn my attention to Randy, "get her out of here and to the horses, I don't want her to see what I'm about to do to this piece of shit," I tell him and Randy nods his head, helping Lucy up from the floor.
Lucy cries out in pain as he helps her to her feet and the rage in me continues to grow towards her father. The second Randy has Lucy out of the house, I turn my attention back to him. My eyes turn feral as they land on the man and his grow wide with fear.
"My king. Please. I'm sorry; please show mercy," he begs me and I laugh before responding to him.
"Show you mercy? For putting your hands on a woman…your daughter! For abusing her for something she had no control over?! Believe me when I say, you will never see her again. I'm taking her with me and I will keep her safe like I did when she showed up at my camp. Despite having to put up with your abuse all her life, she is an absolutely amazing woman, but you wouldn't know that because you treated her like your prisoner. So no, I won't show you mercy; you don't deserve it," I snarl at him, holding him up against the wall by his throat as he grasps at my wrists like his life depends on it.
"If you try and come to look for her…I won't hesitate to end you," I whisper so menacingly, he literally pisses himself. "You have my word on that," I promise him and release my hold on him, but I kick him in the gut and punch him square in the face. I hear his nose let out a sickening crunch, letting me know that I broke it and I smile sickly down at him, satisfied with my work.
He cries out in pain when I punch him and I back away, not taking my eyes off him, "take that as your only warning. Do you hear me you disgusting, vile piece of shit?" I spit at him.
I don't wait for him to respond, instead I walk outside and find Randy still trying to console Lucy. "It's alright, Miss Lucy. He won't hurt you ever again. Drew and I will make sure of that, okay? I promise," he says to her, but she can only formulate in so many words that she wants me. If I wasn't still so consumed with rage, my heart would have soared at her wanting my comfort.
"Lucy, I'm right here, love," I say to her, announcing my presence so she knows I'm near.
"Drew?" She asks, hope in her tone at hearing my voice.
"Yeah, it's me, baby. I'm right here," I reply and she detaches herself from Randy and barrels herself into me and my arms. She latches onto me and I embrace her quickly, holding her to me, whispering that I've got her and that she'll be okay; that she is safe.
"I'm so sorry, please forgive me," Lucy whispers brokenly, grasping at me, almost as if she thinks I'm going to disappear.
"Shh," I say quietly into her ear as I slowly rock her, to calm her down, "there is nothing to forgive, love," I tell Lucy, stroking her hair in a comforting manner. "I'm the one who should be apologizing. I kept pushing when I knew I shouldn't have," I quietly say and press a kiss to the crown of Lucy's head.
She pulls away slightly, without releasing her hold on me and looks up at me with puffy eyes full of curiosity and bruised tear-stained cheeks and she's never looked more beautiful.
Thankfully, Lucy's tears have subsided, but her face is still wet with tears. So, as carefully as I can without causing her more pain, I try to wipe off her tears as carefully as possible, before I press a kiss to her forehead. I know that Randy is watching the whole interaction happen, but at the moment, I could care less. All I care about, is the woman in my arms.
"Come on, let's go home," I tell her quietly with a small smile and she tries to return it, but winces from the pain of her split lip.
"Thank you," she says quietly, "to both of you. I'd probably be dead by now with how badly he was hitting me. So, thank you," Lucy says, looking up at me and then over at Randy, who flashes her a small smile of his own.
"You're very welcome, Miss Lucy," he tells her and mounts his horse while he waits for me to help Lucy up onto my horse.
She grunts and whimpers in pain as she stretches up to get onto the horse. While she struggles to do such a simple task, I silently curse her father for what he's done to her. "You're almost there, love; I've got you," I tell Lucy softly and she manages to get her leg over the horse. She holds onto the saddle as I climb on behind her.
Before we start our journey back, I remove the fur I am wearing and wrap it around Lucy's shoulders to keep her warm during our travel. It's been getting chilly at night and I don't want her to get sick on top of all the misfortunes that she's had to endure already.
Lucy grabs the fur and wraps it tighter around her tiny frame as I take hold of the reigns to begin steering the horse in the right direction. "Thank you," she whispers and I can hear a smile in her voice as she says it. I smile myself, knowing I put that smile on her face.
"You're welcome, love," I whisper back against the shell of her ear and it causes a shiver to run through her body. I press a kiss to Lucy's temple, smiling into it. "We'll go slow, okay? I know you're in a lot of pain and I don't want to make it worse than what it already is," I tell her and she nods her head before leaning her body weight into mine.
Randy looks over at me with a lifted eyebrow, paired with a shit-eating smile, that I can't help but return. He, let alone myself, didn't think she would have warmed up to me as quickly as she did. This special lady is full of surprises that she keeps revealing left and right and I couldn't be more happier about them. He gives me a nod of approval and leads his horse to fall in step ahead of myself and Lucy. Most likely to give us some privacy and I couldn't be more thankful towards him.
"How did you find me?" Lucy asks, looking up at me from over her shoulder before looking ahead once more.
"Aye, after you chose to…flee from me," I begin quietly and clear my throat as I carefully readjust myself, "Randy followed you all the way to your home, but kept his distance, staying hidden in the foliage of the forest," I tell Lucy and she shifts uncomfortably.
Even though I can't see it, I know her eyes are on Randy's back. "He came back to me as soon as he could and almost took my head off for my stupidity," I chuckle quietly and Lucy shifts once more.
"Is that how you got the bruise on your cheekbone?" She asks me tentatively and I nod my head.
Remembering she can't see me I reply, "Aye. He challenged me and I didn't appreciate it, so we had a bit of a fist fight, until he got out of me what he wanted," I explain.
Lucy burrows her body deeper into mine and I close my arms around her the best I can with the reigns in both of my hands, trying to keep her warm. I gently press my face into her hair and breathe her in before I place a kiss to the crown of her head.
"What did he want from you?" Lucy asks me with genuine curiosity.
"He wanted to know what I said to make you run the way you did. After telling him, I didn't hesitate to decide that I needed to come and get you. I didn't care if you were to fight me; I wanted to get you away from him and I'm glad I did. You have no idea how relieved I was to get to you when I did," I tell Lucy quietly. "I wanted you…safe…with me. I never would have forgiven myself if anything worse happened to you, Lucy. You're too important to me.
"Even if you want nothing to do with me and I'll accept your choice, if that is what you do choose, I want to keep you with me where I know you will always be safe," I tell Lucy with quiet conviction and I can feel her trying to mould herself to me as she rubs her cheek against my clothed chest.
She takes a shallow deep breath and nuzzles into me, "after I decided to stand up for myself against my father, I regretted the words as soon as I said them and wished I never left you. All my life, the only time I was ever safe was when I was with you," she whispers to me.
I take a deep breath at her admission, "while it makes me sad that the only time you ever felt safe was around me, I'm glad you did feel safe. Because you were…and are safe with me. Always, Lucy," I whisper back.
"Thank you," Lucy says and grabs one of my hands in hers, holding it, it warms my heart knowing she knows she has the courage to do that on her own free will.
"For what, beautiful?"
"For coming after me and saving me. I don't think I would be here right now if it weren't for you and Randy. So, thank you," Lucy tells me once more and takes my hand she is holding and presses a soft kiss to the top of it.
I can't help the large smile that breaks across my face at the simple gesture. Lucy has no idea what it means to me for that simple gesture. "You're welcome, baby," I reply quietly and press a soft kiss to her temple once more.
"Hmm," Lucy hums softly, "I like it when you call me that," she tells me and I raise my eyebrow at her comment, being glad she can't see it.
"What? Baby?" I ask her.
Lucy nods her head, "yes. I feel like I have butterflies swarming in my tummy when you do," she tells me, almost shyly.
"Aye, that's good to know. And don't worry; that's a good thing," I tell her, playfully before letting my eyes fall forward and into the distance, "we're almost there. Just stay by my side and ignore anything those jobbers have to say, alright?" I tell Lucy softly and she nods her head.
"Don't worry, I won't. I don't plan on leaving your side any time soon. I hope that's alright," Lucy tells me, quietly.
"I am more than okay with it. In fact, I'd want nothing more, love," I whisper to her in her ear and she shivers once more at my close proximity. Despite her keeping me at arms length, I'm glad to know that I have some sort of affect on her; that she no doubt has some sort of feelings for me. But this time…I'm going at her pace because I can't lose her again. I almost did tonight.
